Community Blood Drive on April 6th

CommunityBloodBankDell Rapids, SD- Avera Dells Area Health Center will host a community blood drive on Thursday, April 6 from 7:00 am to 11:00 am and 12:30 pm to 2:30 pm. All blood donations will directly benefit the local blood supply and patients in need at Avera Dells Area Health Center.

“Donating blood on the Community Blood Bank’s bloodmobile directly impacts the Dell Rapids community’s blood supply,” states Ken Versteeg, Executive Director, Community Blood Bank. “With one blood donation, on the bloodmobile, you can save up to three patients. Consider keeping your donation local and impact patients in need when we come to Avera Dells Area Health Center.”

Donors must be at least 17 years old (16 years old with a signed parent consent form found at www.cbblifeblood.org), weigh 110 pounds or more and be in good general health the day of the donation. Please bring an ID with you. It is recommended that you eat and drink plenty of fluids before donating blood. It only takes 30 to 35 minutes to donate with Community Blood Bank.

Community Blood Bank is the sole provider of blood and blood products to 34 local area hospitals, including Avera Dells Area Health Center. To make an appointment or questions please contact Avera Dells Area Health Center at 428-5431. Walk-ins are always welcome.

Sudden Cardiac Death Prevention Screening at DRHS

Dell Rapids High School will be holding a Sudden Cardiac Death Prevention Screening on Thursday, March 30th.  The screening is open to anyone between the ages of 12-34.  The screening includes limited echocardiogram, 12-lead EKG, health history, and blood pressure check.  All of this is reviewed by a local Board Certified Cardiologist.

Screenings must be scheduled in advance therefore paperwork must be returned to LuAnn in the District office by Friday, March 24.  Registration packets are available at all three schools.

PLEASE have your child / grandchild screened! As adults we are told to have mammograms, colonoscopies, etc – please do not forget about our kids! Adam Thompson had no signs or symptoms and often there are none. Do not let this opportunity slip away-get on the schedule today!

Siemonsma to Play in All-Star Game

SiemonsmaSigning2017_1Sheldon Siemonsma will be playing in the 11th Annual Southeast Area All-Star Basketball game.  The game will be held in Tea on Sunday, March 26th.  Siemonsma will also participate in the 3-point competition and dunk competition.  The event starts at 11:30 with the dunk contest, followed by the 3-point competition.  The girls game will start at 12:3o p.m. with the boys game to follow at 2:00 p.m.

Siemonsma averaged 11.1 points per game, 3.9 rebounds per game, and 2.0 assists per game this season.  He finished with 245 points shooting 37% from the field, 27% from three-point area, and 76% from the free-throw line.  Siemonsma will play basketball for the Mount Marty Lancers next season.

Other area players participating in the all-star game on Sunday include Maddie Polzin (Baltic), Joie Spier (O-R-R), Karlee McKinney (Tea Area), Jordan Kruse (Lennox), Cole DeRuyter (Elkton/Lake Benton), Ethan Friedel (Tea Area), Cooper Williams (Vermillion), Mason Leighton (Madison), Dejay Fykstra (SF Christian), Dalyn Bakkedahl (Flandreau), Shay Gibson (Garretson), and Will Steineke (Tri-Valley).

Dell Rapids School Board March 2017 Update

NewDRLogoThe Dell Rapids School Board held their last regular meeting on Monday, March 13th, at the Dell Rapids High School library.  The school board made decisions on the following items, among others:

The school board approved unanimously to approved the amended girls’ soccer cooperative agreement with the Garretson School District.  The proposed cooperative will now go to the South Dakota High School Activities Association for final approval in hopes of being in place for the fall 2017 season.

A slightly amended 2016-2017 school calendar was approved unanimously.  With only one day of school that has been cancelled due to weather, which happened in November, the approved proposal was to not make that day up for students, and to have staff make the day up at the end of the year.  Barring any more snow days, the last day of school will remain as scheduled on May 23rd.  Teachers and staff will make the day up as part of an in-service day on May 25th.

The fee for summer drivers’ education will remain the same for this year.  Students inside the school district will be charged $160.00.  Students outside of the district will be charged $200.00.  Instructors will receive $20.00 per hour for instructional time up to 35 hours, and $90.00 per hour for instructional driving time.

The school board also accepted a request for early retirement from Dale Solberg.  Resignations were also accepted from Mary Trumbo (effective Feb 28th), Mara Wilde (effective Mar 31st), Erin Turner (effective at end of 2016-2017 school year), and Kimberly Kludt (effective Jun 15th).  The hiring of Drew Bunkers as high school principal was accepted effective August 1st.

2016-2017 Post Season Basketball Awards

BasketballSeveral players from the Dell Rapids and Dell Rapids St Mary girls and boys basketball teams received post season awards for their play this season.

Jackie Wolles earned an Honorable Mention All-Conference for the Cardinals in the Dakota Valley Conference.  Connor Libis was a First Team All-Conference selection, and Luke Brown was also an Honorable Mention All-Conference player.

Jayda Knuppe and Emma Paul were Second Team All-Conference selections for the Dakota XII Conference.  Arial Hoffman was an Honorable Mention All-Conference.  Knuppe was also a State A All-Tourney selection.  Jeffrey Schuch and Sheldon Siemonsma were Second Team All-Conference selections, and Mason Peter was an Honorable Mention All-Conference selection.

Ron Peterson

Ron PetersonRon Peterson of Rapid City, formerly of Dell Rapids, passed away on Friday, March 17, 2017. His funeral service will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, March 22, 2017 in the Lutheran Church of Dell Rapids. Ronald Lee Peterson was born in Sioux Falls, SD on March 25, 1935, to Joseph Iver Peterson and Bessie Mabel Flamoe. He was raised on the family farm north of Renner and was baptized and confirmed at the Renner Lutheran Church. Ron went to elementary school at the Berg Country School and then attended high school in Brandon, SD. Ron was active in 4-H, basketball, track, band, choir, and was a member of the first 6-man football team in Brandon. Ron played legion baseball in high school and then for the Renner Monarchs. He was invited to join the Milwaukee Braves farm team in the summer of 1953. Upon graduation from high school, he attended Augustana College in Sioux Falls.

Ron married his high school sweetheart Dorothy Rovang on May 16, 1953, and they made their first home in Sioux Falls, SD. They then moved to Renner and eventually north of Renner to a small home on the family farm. Ron began selling insurance which he continued for many years. In 1964, Ron and Dorothy moved their family to Dell Rapids where they lived for 26 years. While Ron loved his home community of Renner, he began to place strong roots in the community of Dell Rapids as a member of the Lutheran Church of Dell Rapids and serving the city devotedly as a council member and mayor. He was a number one fan of the Quarriers and followed his own children and grandchildren as they participated on many Quarrier teams. He always wanted to know the results of the latest Quarrier events.

Ron had many God-given talents, but one of his favorites was sitting at the piano accompanying a sing-a-long, performing for commemorative events or providing the music at hundreds of funerals. Ron sang as a member of the Minnehaha Mandskor for several years.

In 1990 Ron and Dorothy moved from Dell Rapids to Rapid City where they enjoyed the Black Hills for several years. Ron worked for the United States forest service for five years before he retired. They continued forming important friendships on the Rosebud Reservation and loved to have their children and grandchildren filling their mountain home with much singing , laughter, and spirited conversations.

Ron filled his life with many joys. He was a devoted Christian, husband, father and grandfather leaving a legacy to his children and grandchildren of the assurance of a heavenly home. He always said, “Death comes as a friend to the believer,” and he spent his last hours praising his Father and singing favorite hymns. He even sang “How Great Thou Art” to the ambulance crew who drove him up the mountain to spend his last day in one of his favorite places: home.

Thankful for having shared his life are his wife, Dorothy, and their 5 children: Shirlene Joseph of Deadwood, Bradley Peterson (XinHua) of New York City, Bryan Peterson of Renner, Sharon (David) Mitchell of Dell Rapids, Sarah Peterson of Rapid City, 11 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.

Ron was a true patriot. He loved his country and the state of South Dakota. One of his favorite things was to travel the roads and look out on the countryside. He loved to help his son and best friend, Bryan, with the work on the family farm. His eldest son, Brad and wife Xin Hua generously shared their support and encouragement to the family throughout the years. Ron also entertained his family and friends with historical stories and words of wisdom.

Whether you were traveling near or far, Ron always said goodbye with the words, “The Lord be With You!”

David Chamley

Dave ChamleyDavid R. Chamley, 86, of Dell Rapids passed away on March 16, 2017 at his home under the care of hospice. His funeral service will be held on Monday, March 20, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. in the Lutheran Church of Dell Rapids Chapel. Visitation with family present is from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. on Sunday at Kahler Funeral Home. Dave was born on September 20, 1930 in Flandreau, the son of Roland and Rena Chamley. He grew up and attended school at Egan. Dave was active in all sports, excelling in track. At one time, he held the state record in the 100 yard dash (9.9 seconds). After graduation, he was granted a scholarship at the University of South Dakota at Vermillion. Dave decided to enlist in the U.S. Navy instead because of the Korean War. After enlisting in 1950, he served in Korean waters for 13 months.

Dave married Alice Jensen in August of 1951. They lived in San Diego for the rest of Dave’s enlistment. He was honorably discharged in 1954 with the rank of 2nd class petty officer. They moved back to South Dakota and Dave enjoyed his job at Sioux Valley Telephone Co. in Dell Rapids for 35 years.

Dave also enjoyed coaching Little League for 16 years with his sons, Doug and Scott, served as a Cub Scout master, worked with the Luther League at church, and was active with the Dell Rapids Band Association. Dave was also active with the Lutheran Church of Dell Rapids board of directors, the Old Opera House Players, the Senior Center, and the Dell Rapids Museum. He was also a member of the Dell Rapids American Legion Post. Working with young people was very satisfying for Dave. His time as Santa Claus will be remembered by generations.

Dave enjoyed nature and the outdoors. Fishing, hunting and family camping trips were his priority.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 65 years, Alice; his sons, Douglas (Tara) and Scott (Marie); his daughter, Kim (Mark) Stelzer; his ten grandchildren, Ben, Jacob, Mike, Zach, Eli, and Andrew Chamley, Alice Stelzer, Scott Jr. and Dakota Chamley, and Katherine (Mike) Payne; and his three great-grandchildren.

Carroll Nelson

Carroll NelsonCarroll V. Nelson, 86, of Colman, SD, passed away Sunday, March 12, 2017, at Dells Nursing and Rehab Center, Dell Rapids, SD. Carroll was born December 18, 1930, at the family farm south of Colman, SD, to Clarence and Verna (Sonen) Nelson. He attended Kluge country school and graduated from Colman High School in 1948. Carroll attended Augustana College before joining the S.D. Air National Guard. He served during the Korean War and was stationed at Ellsworth Air Force Base. After his discharge, he returned to Colman and started farming. Carroll married Erlis Christensen on May 26, 1957, in Colman. They farmed in the Colman area and moved onto the Nelson home farm in 1964. Carroll started working at T & R Electric in 1974. They moved into Colman in 1984 and he continued working for T & R and farming until he retired. Carroll was a member of Colman Lutheran Church and was a former board member of Lynn Township. He enjoyed cattle, auctions, and going to all of his grandkid’s events.

Carroll is survived by his wife Erlis; three children, Laurie (Ken) Hannasch, Colman; Vince (Jeri), Colman; Diane (Dennis) LeBrun, Dell Rapids; 10 grandchildren, Bethany, Caitlin, Dalton, Jenny, Sarah, Paige, Matt, Jeff, Kirk, Lexie; nine great-grandchildren, Brooklyn, Logan, Braxton, Crayton, Skylar, Parker, Emma, Evelyn, Paisley; and one sister Jean Kenison, Sioux Falls. Carroll was preceded in death by his parents and one sister Barbara Turner.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, March 15, 2017, at Colman Lutheran Church, Colman, SD, with burial in the Colman Cemetery. Visitation is 5 – 7 p.m. Tuesday at Skroch Funeral Chapel, Colman, with a 7 p.m. prayer service. On-line condolences may be left at the Skroch Funeral Chapel website.

Payton Park (DRSM) finished 4th in the 132-pound class, and Jordan Kitto (DR) placed 7th.

Seth Spielmann (DR) won the 148-pound class. Anthony Miller (DR) placed 5th and Alex Nordstrom (DR) placed 7th in the same class.

Sam Schwebach (DRSM) placed 13th in the 165-pound class.

Carson Park (DRSM) was 4th in the 181-pound class.  Tate Hansen (DRSM) finished 9th.  Mason Schmidt (DR) was 11th, and Josh Heinemman (DR) placed 12th.

Andrew Hegge (DR) was 10th in the 198-pound class.  Tyson Dahler (DR) placed 12th.

2017 SD Legislative Sessions – Dan Ahlers Week 9 Update

dan_ahlersGreetings from Pierre. The legislature has wrapped up the 2017 session. While there have been some disappointments, I would like to focus on the accomplishments.

The repeal of IM-22 was a controversial issue in Pierre this session. However, with help from the voters, we passed HB1076. This bill creates the Government Accountability Board. The legislature will also study campaign finance reform over the summer.

This session, the legislature increased funding for the Intensive Meth Treatment Program. Across the board cuts in 2011 have had a devastating impact on our fight against meth addiction. Instead of a reduction in meth use, we have seen an increase in cases. This money will enable our providers increase the number of people receiving treatment for meth addiction.

The legislature also appropriated money for the Animal Disease Research and Diagnostic Lab addition and renovation at SDSU. This facility is our line of defense against animal disease and protecting our food supply. This lab also handles the quarantine process when an outbreak occurs. This lab serves our farmers as well as food processors like the turkey plant in Huron and Morrells in Sioux Falls.

During the governor’s budget address, he advocated for a 1% increase for education, Medicaid providers and state employees. When revenues came in lower than expected, these recommendations were eliminated by the governor. By statute, the legislature was still obligated to give education a three-tenths of a percent increase. Republican leadership advocated not giving an increase to education and voted to eliminate language that dedicated the ½ percent sales tax to education.

Through a bi-partisan effort with the Senate, we were able to get a .3% increase for education, .3% for most Medicaid providers and reduce insurance costs for state employees. Many in Republicans in the House were unhappy with this plan. Ultimately, most voted for the increases. We were able to get the increase without increasing the budget or making cuts that would hurt ongoing programs.

We did not attempt to put language back into statute that dedicated the ½ percent sales tax to education. The way the previous language was written, the legislature would have cut $5.9 million from education. Even with the .3% increase in the funding formula, education would have taken a $3 million cut. The ½ percent sales tax will most likely be an issue in the 2018 session.
