Big 5th Inning Lifts O’Gorman Over Dell Rapids

DellsBaseball_3-30-17Sioux Falls O’Gorman scored seven runs in the fifth inning as they came from behind to beat Dell Rapids 12-4 at Ronken Field in Sioux Falls on Thursday, March 30th.  This was the second straight game against a Sioux Falls team for Dell Rapids to open the 2017 season.

Dell Rapids got on the board first when Nate McKee earned a bases-loaded walk scoring Austin Ellingson.  SF O’Gorman scored two times in the bottom of the first inning on a double and fielder’s choice to take an earl 2-1 lead.  Dell Rapids would take advantage of three SF O’Gorman errors in the second inning and pushed across three runs to go ahead 4-2.  SF O’Gorman picked up a run on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the third inning, and Dell Rapids still led 4-3 after three innings.

Both teams were scoreless in the fourth inning, but SF O’Gorman took the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning on back-to-back doubles after a lead-off walk.  O’Gorman would score three more runs on wild pitches.  O’Gorman scored seven times in the fifth inning to take a 10-4 lead.  O’Gorman added two more runs in the sixth inning.

Josh Roemen, Matt Gillogly, and Ellingson all picked up hits in the game.  McKee and Gillogly each had an RBI.  Elijah Story pitched two innings to start the game giving up three runs, all earned, on two hits and six walks.  Carter Gullickson pitched two innings, taking the loss by giving up three runs, all earned, on two hits while striking out two and walking one.  Ellingson gave up four runs, three earned, on five walks.  Gillogly also pitched two innings giving up two runs, none earned, on one hit with five strikeouts and two walks.

Dell Rapids (0-2) will travel to Volga to face Sioux Valley in a double-header on Sunday, April 2nd, at 2:00 and 4:00 p.m.

Cardinal Track Opens Season in Centerville

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal girls and boys track teams opened up their 2017 track season at theLounsbery Early Bird track meet in Centerville on Tuesday, March 28th.   The Cardinals will travel to Flandreau for the Barnes-Evans Relays on Tuesday, April 4th.

Dells Baseball Falls in Season Opener

DellsBaseball_3-28-17The Dell Rapids High School baseball team dropped their first game of the year to Sioux Falls Lincoln by a score of 6-5 at Rickeman Field on Tuesday, March 28th.

SF Lincoln scored four times in the top of the first inning on just one hit to start the game.  Dell Rapids pushed across a run in the bottom half of the inning on a SF Lincoln error, and SF Lincoln led 4-1 after the first inning.  Neither team scored in the second inning, and then SF Lincoln pushed across two more runs in the top of third on a single and error to take a 6-1 lead.  Matt Gillogly had an RBI single in the bottom of the third to cut the lead to 6-2.  Gillogly again had an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth inning as Dell Rapids cut the lead in half at 6-3.

Dell Rapids put together a rally in the bottom half of the seventh inning.  After a lead off pop-out, Austin Ellingson and Carter Gullickson received back-to-back walks with one out.  Gillogly went down swinging for the second out, but Nate McKee followed with a two-run double over the head of the left fielder to pull Dell Rapids within a run at 6-5.  Elijah Story followed with a walk to put the winning run on first base with two outs.  However, SF Lincoln was able to get a strike out of Keegan Miller to end the game and preserve the win.

Gillogly finished 2-3 for Dell Rapids with two RBIs.  McKee, Gullickson, and Ellingson all had doubles in the game.  Story also had a hit for Dell Rapids.

Ellingson took the loss for Dell Rapids giving up four runs, all earned, while walking four.  Trevor Pulscher pitched four innings giving up two runs, both unearned, on two hits while walking three and striking out two.  Josh Roemen pitched three innings giving up two hits while striking out four and walking two.

Dell Rapids (0-1) will travel to Sioux Falls to play Sioux Falls O’Gorman on Thursday, March 30th.

Resolution for New Street Tabled

DellRapidsTowerA decision to approve Resolution 2017-04 for street improvements to Garfield Ave from Centennial Pl to Quartzite St and then south of Quartzite St 800′ was tabled during the Dell Rapids City Council’s regular meeting on Monday, March 20th.  Several affected property owners spoke out on the resolution during the meeting.  The common theme among the affected property owners was that the assessed value of the project was too high without an increased value to their properties.

The total estimated cost of this project is $399,400, but the project could be broken up into two parts.  The estimated cost of street improvements of Garfield Ave from Centennial Pl to Quartzite St is $247,000.  The estimated cost of the street improvements from Quartzite St south an additional 800′ is $152,400.  The discussions on the resolution between the council and property owners lasted nearly two hours and two amended motions failed votes before the decision to table the item until next meeting was passed.

Councilman James Borchert made a motion to remove the 800′ portion of the project from the resolution and to exclude two property owners from assessment, but the amended motion failed by a vote of 2-4.  Councilman Mike Geraets made a motion to remove the 800′ portion of the project from the resolution, but to included all impacted property owners of the remaining portion of the project in the assessment, but Geraets’ amended motion also failed by a 2-4 vote.

The council ultimately decided to table the discussions until the next meeting, which will be held on Monday, April 3rd.

 

DR Youth Wrestling Produces Four State Champions

AAUWrestleTwenty-seven wrestlers from the Dell Rapids Youth Wrestling program participated in the 2017 South Dakota Wrestling Coaches Association State Youth Wrestling Tournament in Rapid City on Friday, March 24th, and Saturday, March 25th.  Twenty-one of those 27 wrestlers placed in the tournament over the weekend, including four state champions and two runner-ups.

Laura (Lindholm) Amert

Laura AmertLaura C. Amert, 100, of Madison passed away peacefully at home on March 18, 2017. Funeral services were held on March 23 at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Wentworth, SD. On-line condolences may be left at the Kinzley Funeral Home website.

Laura Weerts was born on December 25, 1916 in Naper, NE. She was baptized on December 31, 1916 and confirmed on May 18, 1930 at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Wentworth, SD. She attended and graduated from Wentworth High School and on February 22, 1938 she married Robert Lindholm. Robert passed away on October 25, 1965. On May 31, 1969 Laura married George Amert at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church. Laura was a lifelong member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Wentworth where she was very active with the Sunday School program. She also was interested in crafts, painting, sewing, gardening and refinishing furniture.

Laura is survived by her children, Delores (Alton) Tokheim of Dell Rapids; Carleen Ooms of Colman; Rosalie Augustad of Chester and Thomas (Patricia) Lindholm of Wentworth; her step-children: Judy Kerin of Coldspring, MN; Jan (Tom) Storey of Rathdrum, ID; and Joyce (John) Dragseth of Nunda, SD, many grandchildren and great grandchildren; one brother Edward (Margaret) Weerts of Fort Wayne, IN, and many other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters, five brothers, two husbands and two sons, Kenneth and Douglas.

George “Al” Smith

George SmithAl Smith, age 87, of Cottonwood and Marshall, Minnesota passed away on Wednesday, March 15th at the Prairie Home Hospice House in Marshall with family at his side. Al was born on February 2nd, 1930 in Cottonwood, to farmer and entrepreneur, George and Amy (Larson) Smith. He was baptized at Swan Lake church in Cottonwood and spent his early years on the Smith farm in Stanley Township, Lyon County, south of Cottonwood. There he learned the art of levity as he grew up in the fold of farm hands and truckers hired by his father during the Great Depression.

He graduated from Cottonwood High School in 1947. He attended college at Oklahoma University, Macalester College and later earned his business degree as part of the first graduating class at Southwest State in 1971.

On July 4th, 1952, he was called to serve in the Korean War as a driver for the company commander. He recalls a commander saying to him after an especially grueling armored truck trek, “Smith, if I ever need a family driver, I want you!”

On August 1, 1953, he married his high school sweetheart, Stella Ann Hoff at the Little Brown Church in the Vale in Nashua, IA. Shortly after their 40th wedding anniversary, on September 12, 1993, Stella passed away from cancer.

In the ensuing years, Al kept a low profile as he tried to recover from his loss. Alan once again found love when he recognized a woman named Evelyn Bowman at a restaurant in St. Paul. She had lived in Marshall from 1968 until 1978. He got her phone number and eventually took her to dinner. It was an immediate affirmation of love and commitment and Al and Evie were married December 4th, 1999 at the Hamline United Methodist Church surrounded by extended family and friends. Alan and Evelyn blended their families and treated each other’s kids and grandkids as their own together. They spent many years traveling to Alaska, Scotland, Hawaii and all over the continental US. They also loved attending his Army’s company reunions throughout the years.

Alan often said he didn’t know how he could be so blessed as to be loved by not only one, but two beautiful women in his life. Al lived his life devoted to Evelyn, his family and his church. The community of his friends enriched his life and he theirs. He was a man with a smile and handshake for everyone.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Stella; his brothers, John and Doug; and his sister, Dorris Linnell.

He is survived by his wife, Evelyn of Marshall; his children, Keven and Kendra Smith of Redmond, WA, Kirk and Lou Ann Smith of New Ulm, MN, Kelly and Chris Smith of St. Paul, MN, Karleen and John Clemens of St. Paul, MN, and Kari and Mike Snyder of Lakeville, MN; 16 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; sister, Helen of Richmond, VA; sisters-in-law, Shirley and Dave Javens, and Charlotte Hoff, all of Cottonwood; as well as Evelyn’s 3 sons, Vic and Mary Bowman of St. Paul, MN, Greg and MaryAnn Bowman of Pigeon Falls, WI, and Chris and Kim Bowman of Dell Rapids, SD; her 6 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren – all of whom Alan thought of as his own. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews and their children and grandchildren. Blessed be his memory.

Lynn Tjaden

Lynn TjadenLynn Warren Tjaden was born in Minneapolis, MN on January 6, 1948, and was adopted through the Lutheran Social Services by Roy and Edna (Moen) Tjaden of Brandt, SD in May 1948. He was baptized, confirmed and was a member of the Highland Lutheran Church in Brandt. He attended Willow Row Country School for eight years and graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1966. Lynn was a member of FFA and received The Star Farmer Award in 1966-67 and served as State FFA Vice-President during that time. His sales career began with Sokota Seeds in Brookings at the age of 12.

He attended SDSU and graduated in 1971 with a B.S. in Ag-Business. Lynn joined the ROTC Program at SDSU and completed his basic training in Ft. Riley, Kansas then going on to school at Ft. Sill, OK. With the Vietnam War coming to an end he was discharged in July of 1971. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion where he held memberships in Gary, SD and Dawson, MN.

Lynn married Pam Joens on August 28, 1971 in Clear Lake, SD. To this union two sons were born, Shannon Roy and Nathan Lynn. They lived in Pierre, SD while he was employed at the FHA Office there. In 1972 Lynn returned to Clear Lake to work at the Deuel County National Bank until 1986. In 1986 he started the Watertown Auction Co. and continued there until 1995. Lynn operated Farm & Ranch Equipment in Dawson, MN until 2005. Most recently he was employed by Terpstra Equipment in Pipestone, MN.

Lynn was an Auctioneer for many years and had well over 3,000 sales. He first worked with Harold Wright and Todd White. The majority of his sales were with John Swenson, Clem Regnier, Orville Wollum and Merlyn Siegfried. During his career he worked with over 40 auctioneers and a great joy was being able to auctioneer with his son Nathan, and see his son Shannon receive his Master’s Degree in Educational Administration. In recent years he enjoyed attending his grandsons’ many activities.

Lynn was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2003, Hodgkins Lymphoma in 2014 and

Large Cell Neuroendocrine Cancer in February 2017. He passed away on Tuesday, March 21, 2017 at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD at the age of 69 years, 2 months and 15 days. Funeral Services were held on March 21, 2017 at Highland Lutheran Church, Brandt, SD. On-line condolences may be left at the Houseman Funeral Home website.

Lynn is survived by his son, Shannon (Tammy) Tjaden, Dell Rapids, SD, grandsons, Tyler and Tad, and his son Nathan Tjaden, Brandt, SD; and longtime friends, Bob Sik and Connie Winter. He is preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Edna Tjaden; and sister, Janice Colleen.

Grace (Smith) Reiter

Grace ReiterGrace Jane (Smith) Reiter, 100, passed away on Wednesday, March 22, 2017, at the Good Samaritan Center in Sioux Falls. Her funeral service will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, March 28, 2017, in Miller Funeral Home Southside Chapel. Visitation with the family present will be one hour prior to the start of the service. Interment will be in the Dell Rapids Cemetery.  On-line condolences may be left at the Kahler Funeral Home website.

She was born on August 18, 1916, in Sioux Falls to Edward and Florence (Lindenmuth) Smith. She married Bernard “Barney” Anthony Reiter on October 26, 1937, in Canton, South Dakota. The couple lived and worked for many years in Dell Rapids before moving to Sioux Falls in 1970.

When she was single, Grace worked in Sioux Falls at the Sunshine Cafe on Mable Avenue. After her marriage, Grace worked at the Dells Cafe, the Coop Creamery and at the Riverside Hatchery which her father owned and operated. Grace later went to work for Sioux Valley Milk Producers in Sioux Falls. After retiring she and her husband spent many years volunteering for the Bergland Center.

Grace was a lifetime member of the VFW and the DAV. For twenty-two years she played drums for the Happy Notes band that performed in and around Sioux Falls and Harlingen, Texas, where Grace and her husband spent their winters.

Grace was preceded in death by her husband, parents and brother, Venus “Bud” Smith. She is survived by her son, Ken and his wife, Kathy; her grandson, Aaron and his wife, Carly and great granddaughters, Reagan and Camryn of Sioux Falls and her grandson, Jared and his wife, Christina and great granddaughters, Brianna, Jordan Grace, and Hailey of Wesley Chapel, North Carolina; two brothers-in-law, four sisters-in-law and her many nieces and nephews.

Dell Rapids St Mary Students Sing at Gift of Hope Concert

Five Dell Rapids St Mary students joined other students from the Catholic Diocese of Sioux Falls to sin in the Gift of Hope Concert.

Avery Carder, Paige Bunkers, Ella Swift, Lucy Swift, and Danika Deuter sang in the concert which was held on Sunday, March 19th, at Sioux Falls O’Gorman High School.  The students also had the opportunity to sing with Christian artist Mark Schultz on stage for the last two songs of the concert.

Proceeds from the concert went to the Catholic Family Services’ Gift of Hope Fund to help enhance the work of CFS.  Through this fund, people of all faiths, ages, and walks of life receive help, hope, and healing with services such as grief counseling, adoption, and many others.
