Reports of Vandalism in City Park

VandelismInParkThe Dell Rapids City Council reported vandalism to Deputy Lowe of the Minnehaha County Sheriff’s Office during their regular meeting on Monday, April 3rd.  Deputy Lowe asked if there were any concerns from the council during the meeting.

“It was brought to my attention from the girls scouts that in city park that someone defecated on the slides on top and there is quite a bit of graffiti,” said city councilman Barry Berg.

It was noted that some of the vandalism happened the weekend of April 1st and April 2nd.  The city’s public works department cleaned the slides on Monday, April 3rd.  The girls scouts have plans to attend the next council meeting on Monday, April 17th, to present an idea to the council of cleaning up the graffiti in the caboose.

It was also asked of Deputy Lowe if there were other reports of break-ins other than a recent garage break-in in Dell Rapids, but Deputy Lowe reported back that there hasn’t been a string of break-ins since late December to early January which were a couple of storage sheds. 

Even though Deputy Lowe reported there hasn’t been a string of break-in reports, there have been other issues of vandalism and theft in the past few weeks. Alliecat Creations in downtown Dell Rapids had windows broken out on March 18th, and there are posts on Facebook of a recent theft of a canoe.

Faith (Scherff) Alberts

Faith AlbertsFaith B. Alberts, 74, of Dell Rapids, passed away suddenly on Wednesday, April 5, 2017 at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls. Her funeral service will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, April 10, 2017 in the Reformed Church, Dell Rapids. Interment will be in the Logan Reformed Cemetery. Visitation with the family present will be held from 5:00 p.m. – 7: 00 p.m. at Kahler Funeral Home on Sunday, April 9, 2017.  On-line condolences may be left at the Kahler Funeral Home website.

Faith was born on May 7, 1942 at Dell Rapids, the daughter of Henry and Beulah (Swanson) Scherff. She grew up in Trent and graduated as the valedictorian of her class from Trent High School. She then went to work for Warren Radio Supply in Sioux Falls. She married Merle Alberts on March 25, 1961 at the Lutheran Church of Dell Rapids. The couple made their home on a farm near Trent. In 1969, they moved to their farm between Dell Rapids and Jasper. Merle and Faith moved into Dell Rapids in 2007.

She was a member of the Reformed Church and Ladies Circle and was the secretary and treasurer of the Ladies Circle for over 19 years.

Her greatest love was her family and time spent with her family and friends especially her grandchildren.

Faith was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Hope Hegarty.

She is survived by her husband, Merle of Dell Rapids; her children, Kevin (Trudy) Alberts of Dell Rapids, Kathy (Jeff) McBrayer of Sioux Falls, Kimberly (John) Stych of Williamsburg, IA and Keith (Alissa) Alberts of Sioux Falls; her nine grandchildren, Andrew Alberts, Austin Alberts, Zach McBrayer, Josh (Ema) McBrayer, Samantha (Collin) Citrowske, Daniel Alberts, Aaron Alberts, Benjamin Alberts and Kenan Alberts; and her brother, Charles Scherff.

Tom Merry

Tom MerryThomas “Tom” Merry, 91, of Dell Rapids, passed away on Tuesday, April 4, 2017 at his home. His memorial service will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, April 10, 2017 in the First Baptist Church, Dell Rapids. An inurnment ceremony with military rites will begin at 10:00 a.m. prior to the service in the Dell Rapids Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Sunday, April 9, 2017 starting at 5:00 p.m. with the family present after the Master’s golf tournament until 8:00 p.m. in the First Baptist Church, Dell Rapids.  On-line condolences may be left at the Kahler Funeral Home website.

Thomas “Tom” Raymond Merry was born November 24, 1925, in Dell Rapids, South Dakota, the son of Henry and Anna Janette (Qualseth) Merry. He grew up in Dell Rapids and graduated from Dell Rapids High School in 1943. He began College at South Dakota State University and was a member of the varsity basketball team. While he was a good athlete, he claims he made the team only because the others were serving in the military during World War II. His college and basketball careers were also interrupted when he was ordered to report. While going down the hallway to the Army office, Tom passed by an open door that said Navy above the door. He inquired of the young man behind the desk if it was too late to become a seaman, and the answer was “come on in”.

While Tom was training in Southern California he met Julia “Judy” Whitlock who was working at the Naval Ammunition Depot in Fallbrook, California. Tom and Judy hit it off right away, and Tom called his dad to say he and Judy were going to get married. His dad dismissed it as perhaps youthful “not quite” maturity. After a brief courtship, they were married on June 7, 1945. When Tom’s sister, Reefa, came for a visit, and found they were married, she said “Tommy, you had better call your dad!”

Following the war and Tom’s discharge from the Navy in August, 1945, they moved to Brookings so both could continue their education at South Dakota State. Tom could no longer make the basketball team, but to get into the games, and considering they were dirt poor, he followed in the footsteps of his older brother, Howard “Jiggs”, and became a cheerleader so he could get in free. Tom and the Dean of the math department became good friends and “billiard buddies”. The Dean would get Tom out of class to shoot billiards which Tom became very good at, and billiards tournaments helped with the family finances. Tom graduated in 1949 with a degree in engineering, and his first job was with the Trane Company in Salt Lake City and then Boise, Idaho, where Max was born in 1949. In 1951 Tom and Judy moved back to Dell Rapids, and Tom joined his dad and brother, “Jiggs”, in the John Deere Implement business known as Dells Motor Co. Sue was born in 1952, and Ray was born in 1960. Tom and Jiggs continued to work in the business after it was sold and relocated to the Dells Interstate Exchange. They considered the 3 mile drive a commute and packed their lunches. Tom retired in 1989.

Tom was an avid sports fan, playing amateur baseball and basketball. He was one of the founders of the Dell Rapids Golf Course in the early to mid-1960’s. He was instrumental in the original layout, which for the most part went in a counter clockwise direction. Trouble was generally on the right. Tom never sliced the ball but was prone to hook the ball to the left, thus designing the course to suit himself. In later years, senior citizen golf was more about scrounging golf balls than serious golf. Tom was in charge of rodent control, and he was an excellent shot. The course was gopher-less for many years. Tom’s greatest interest was young people, and over the years he came to know many. Whether it was a basketball game, football game, track meet, volleyball game, baseball game, etc., whether varsity, junior varsity or younger, quite often he would be there. Tom is a 3-time recipient of the Booster of the Year Award at Dell Rapids Public High, most recently with his close friend and “care giver”, Don Sagmoe. Tom regularly handed out Tootsie Roll Pops to “kids”, even in their 60’s. In the summer he would stop by the local swimming pool and take Blizzard orders from the staff, which he would buy and deliver. If he knew you, you’d get a hug. If he didn’t, you may still get a hug. He loved kids and just enjoyed people.

Tom was preceded in death by his wife, Judy. Tom’s family includes his sister, Reefa Hanenberger, of Laguna Woods, California, his son, Max (wife, Cheryl) of Dell Rapids, daughter, Sue Pond (husband, Graeme) of Melbourne, Australia, son, Ray (Christine Farragher) of Eagle, Colorado, three grandchildren, Lindsay Merry (Joe Espinoza), Jessica Pond (Nick Uren), Sarah Burnett (husband, Justin) and four great-grandchildren, Brooklyn Merry, Paisley Espinoza, Hamish Burnett and Abby Burnett, Judy’s sister, Sammy McKay ( husband, Howard) of Snohomish, WA., and many nieces and nephews.

The family requests memorials be given to the First Baptist Church of Dell Rapids, where Tom was a lifelong member.

Both Quarrier Track Teams Finish Top 5 at Tri-Valley

NewDRLogoBoth the Dell Rapids Quarrier girls and boys track teams finished in the top five of the team standings at the 2017 Tri-Valley Booster Invitational Track Meet at Tri-Valley High School on Thursday, April 6th.  The girls finished fourth with a total of 89 points.  West Central was first with 129 points, followed by Sioux Falls Christian with 117 points, and Mt Vernon/Plankinton with 94 points.  The boys team finished second with 128.5 points.  Sioux Falls Christian was first with 168 points.

The Quarriers will be at the Vince Relays in Elkton on Saturday, April 8th.

St Mary Carnival and Auction is Another Big Success

StMaryAuctionShovelThe 44th annual St Mary Carnival and Auction was another big success this year.  The event was held on Sunday, April 2nd.  Although the final fundraiser numbers are not complete, just this year’s auction almost has matched last year’s event total.  Some of the big ticket items this year were six scoop shovels that went for $3,500 each and cedar chests handcrafted by Leonard Dressen.

The winners of this year’s raffles were Todd Brown (TV), Katie Luttmann (4-wheeler), Kurt Heinemann ($5,000 for last person standing), Barb Glazier (hog), and Ann Pierson ($500 gift card bouquet).

Dell Rapids FCCLA Chapter Recognized

FCCLALogoThe Dell Rapids FCCLA Chapter was recognized at the SD FCCLA Leadership Conference held in Sioux Falls on Sunday, April 2nd through Tuesday, April 4th for receiving the Gold Star Merit Chapter Award for their overall accomplishments in meeting the requirements for state and national projects this year.

They received a Silver rating for completing projects addressing focus areas of the Outreach team and the Lead2Feed program.  They were recognized in the community service area for projects of the Current Trends program.

In the individual competitive STAR Event categories, Faithe Larson received a Top Superior in the Recycle and Redesign category.

Receiving a Gold rating on their Illustrated Talks were Janae Hahn, Alexyss La Deaux, Cariss Montgomery, and Desirae Horton.  Receiving a Silver Rating in the Sports Nutrition category were Beth Bruggeman and Stephanie Dennis, Veronica Vanderloo in the National Programs in Action category, and Rylee Rinehart on her Illustrated Talk.  Alexyss was also a candidate for the position of state Junior High Representative.

CONGRATULATIONS to all members who participated!  You did a super job!!

St Mary Track Record Broken in Flandreau

DRSM LogoEighth grader Ella Heinitz broke a Dell Rapids St Mary High School track record with a 400m dash time of 1:02.65 at the Barnes Evans Relays track meet in Flandreau on Tuesday, April 4th.  Both the boys and the girls Cardinal track teams participated in the event.

The Cardinals will be in Garretson on Thursday, April 6th, for the Jesse James Invite.

Quarrier Track Starts 2017 Season at SDSU

NewDRLogoThe Dell Rapids Quarrier girls and boys track teams opened up their 2017 season at the Scott Underwood Invitational at the Sanford-Jackrabbit Athletic Complex in Brookings on Monday, April 3rd.  The Quarrier girls team finished with 8.2 points at the meet.  Sioux Falls Christian won the girls title with 51 points.  Sioux City North was second, and Viborg finished third.  The Quarrier boys team placed fourth with a total of 46 points.  Sioux Falls Christian also won the boys title with 122 points.  Sioux City North was second, and Chester Area finished third.

The Quarriers will be at the Tri-Valley Invite on Thursday, April 6th.

Area Youth Wrestlers Compete at National Duals

Three Dell Rapids area youth wrestlers got to compete in the Lee Pamulak Middle School National Duals in Des Moines, IA on Saturday, April 1st and Sunday, April 2nd.  Lincoln Richeal, Mitchell Klinkenborg, and Zach McKee all wrestled for the South Dakota Blue team over the weekend.

South Dakota Blue finished fifth in Pool 1 earning wins over South Dakota Silver and Montana Grey.  The team then defeated Iowa Young Bucks 60-53 to place 9th.

Richeal finished 4-3 over the weekend.  Mitchell Klinkenborg finished 2-5 on the weekend, and McKee also finished with a 2-5 record on the weekend.  Richeal also awarded a Bronze All-American award during the tournament.

Dell Rapids Baseball Splits at Sioux Valley

DellsBaseball_4-2-17The Dell Rapids high school baseball team split a double-header against Sioux Valley in Volga on Sunday, April 2nd.  Dell Rapids won the first game 9-3, with Sioux Valley taking the second game in extra innings by a score of 4-3.

After giving up three runs in the bottom of the first inning, Dell Rapids scored the final nine runs of the game, including four runs in the third inning, to pick up their first win of the season.  Josh Roemen, Carter Gullickson, and Keegan Miller all had two hits in the game.  Adrian Juba, Nate McKee, and Matt Gillogly also picked up hits.  Miller had a double and three RBIs.  Juba, Roemen, McKee and Gillogly each had an RBI in the ball game.  Trevor Pulscher starting the game pitching 1/3 of an inning giving up three runs, all earned, on three walks.  Roemen earned the win for Dell Rapids pitching 6 2/3 innings giving up just three hits while walking three and striking out 18 batters.

Sioux Valley earned an extra inning win in the second game on a home run in the top of the ninth inning.  Sioux Valley scored first in the top of the third inning, but Dell Rapids took the lead in the bottom of the fourth when Gullickson hit an RBI single to right field.  Gullickson scored on a wild pitch two batters later to give Dell Rapids the lead.  Sioux Valley regained the lead in the top of the sixth on a two-run single to go ahead 3-2.  Dell Rapids tied the game in the bottom of the seventh.  Miller got on base with a one-out single, and then scored just ahead of the throw to the plate on a two-out triple by Elijah Story.  However, a lead-off home run in the top of the ninth proved to be the winning run for Sioux Valley.

Seth Anderson had two hits in the second game.  Story, Gullickson, Austin Ellingson, and Miller all had hits as well.  Story and Gullickson picked up RBIs in the game.  Pulscher also started the second game, this time pitching five innings giving up two runs, one earned, on one hit with three walks and one strikeout.  Gillogly pitched three innings giving up one earned run on two hits with three walks and seven strikeouts.  Gullickson took the loss pitching one inning giving up one earned run on one hit.
