Dell Rapids School Board Updates

The Dell Rapids School Board will have a new member starting in July. Jeff Traill won an election for the position being vacated by Tom Morris. Traill received 185 votes in the April 11th election, while his opponent Kevin Mattern received 76 votes. There was a 6.5% voter turnout for the school board position election.

The Dell Rapids School Board also heard or took action on the following items during their last regular board meeting on Monday, April 10th:

The school board approved the health insurance, vision insurance, and worker’s compensation insurance renewals.
School board also approved the school-sponsored summer camp fees and stipends for the 2017 summer season.
Activities Director Jeff Dvorak gave a report to the school board about some potential changes to athletic rules pending vote by the South Dakota High School Activities Association. Some of those potential changes include region re-alignment, a moratorium during the Christmas break starting the 2018-2019 school year, and changes to the amount of full-contact practices in football.
The school board also accepted the resignations of Nathan Korn (facility/grounds manager effective April 3rd), Lori Morris (teacher at the end of the 2016-2017 school year), and JoAnn Borns (paraprofessional at the end of the 2016-2017 school year). They approved the hire of Jordan Huska as a teacher effective for the 2017-2018 school year.

Dell Rapids Baseball Wins Third Straight

The Dell Rapids baseball team won their third straight game, and fourth out of their last five, after beating Deuel/Hamlin/Castlewood 7-3 at Rickeman Field on Thursday, April 13th.

Dell Rapids scored first in the bottom of the first inning when Austin Ellingson scored on an RBI groundout by Nate McKee to take a 1-0 lead. D/H/C picked up two runs in the top of the seconding inning on an RBI single and throwing error to take a short-lived 2-1 lead. Dell Rapids tied the game on back-to-back hits to start the bottom of the second. Keegan Miller started the inning with a lead-off triple and then scored on a single by Seth Anderson. Anderson scored later in the inning on an RBI single by Josh Roemen, and Dell Rapids regained the lead 3-2 after the second inning. Neither team scored until the top of the fifth when D/H/C tied the game on an RBI fielder’s choice. Dell Rapids would take the lead for good in the bottom of the fifth inning. Roemen scored on an RBI single by Gullickson. Nate McKee drove home Brandon Geraets and Gullickson on a triple to put Dell Rapids ahead 6-3. Dell Rapids got one more run in the sixth inning on an RBI single by McKee.

Gullickson picked up three hits and an RBI in the game. McKee had two hits, including a triple, along with four RBI. Roemen had a hit and RBI, Miller had a triple, and Anderson had a hit and RBI. Trevor Pulscher started the game on the mound pitching four innings giving up two runs, one earned, on five hits with one walk and four strikeouts. Elijah Story picked up the winning in relief pitching three innings giving up one unearned run on three hits while striking out five batters.

Dell Rapids (4-3) will travel to Baltic on Monday, April 17th, at 5:30 p.m.

ChiroSport Has Ribbon Cutting

ChiroSport was officially welcomed to the community and welcomed as a member of the Dell Rapids Chamber of Commerce with a ribbon cutting ceremony at the office at 410 W 4th St, Suite C, in Dell Rapids on Wednesday, April 12th. Drs. Alex and Danika Nachreiner along with members from the chamber and guests cut the ribbon in front of their office prior to an open house for the community. The open house consisted of a meet and great with Alex and Danika, tour of the office, snacks and drinks, along with prizes.

ChiroSport opened their doors to appointments on Monday, February 13th. ChiroSport offers services of chiropractic care, nutritional counseling, pediatric care, maternity care, ARP trainer rehab, functional and dynamic rehab, Graston soft tissue therapy, myofascial work, spinal decompression, and kinesiotaping.

The Dell Rapids ChiroSport is the third ChiroSport office in the area. There are also ChiroSport locations in Sioux Falls and Brandon. Alex is a graduatate of Brandon Valley High School, South Dakota State University, and Northwestern Health Sciences University. Danika is a native of Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, Canada and attended the University of Saskatchewan and Northwestern Health Sciences University.

Raphael Schwebach

Raphael V. Schwebach, 92, of Dell Rapids, passed away on Tuesday, April 11, 2017 at the Dells Nursing and Rehab Center. His Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, April 19, 2017 in St. Mary Catholic Church, Dell Rapids. Visitation will begin at noon on Tuesday, April 18, 2017 with a Christian Wake Service beginning at 6:00 p.m. at the funeral home. A Catholic Order of Foresters Rosary will be prayed following the wake service. On-line condolences may be left at the Kahler Funeral Home website.

Raphael V. Schwebach was born on October 13, 1924 on a farm near Dell Rapids, SD, the son of Phillip and Catherine (Biren) Schwebach. He grew up on the family farm and attended country school and St. Mary School. He started working with his parents on the family farm east of Dell Rapids starting in the 1940’s. He retired from farming in 1981 but continued to have livestock until 1996. He moved to Orchard Hills in Dell Rapids in 2009 and became a resident of Dells Nursing and Rehab in 2014.

He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church and the Catholic Order of Foresters. He marketed livestock for over 40 years.

He is preceded in death by his parents, his four sisters and his five brothers.

Raphael is survived by his many nieces and nephews.

Quarrier Girls 2nd, Cardinal Boys 3rd at Garretson Early Bird Golf Tourney

The Dell Rapids Quarrier girls golf team placed second at a team at the Garretson Early Bird golf tournament on Tuesday, April 11th, in Garreston. The Quarriers had a team total of 158. Flandreau won the girls title with a total of 153. Garreston was third with 165, Sioux Valley fourth with 179, and Chester fifth with 195. The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal boys golf team placed third as a team with a 158. Garretson won the boys title with a 129. Chester was second with 138, and Flandreau tied St Mary for third with 158.

Kaitlyn Greenhoff (DR) won the girls individual title with a round of 48, and Rose Habager placed fourth with a round of 51. Grace Johanson from Flandreau was second with a 49, and Destiny Nelson of Flandreau was third with a 50. Grace Tischer, Mallory Haak, and Sydney Emery all had rounds of 59 for the Quarriers. Olivia Downs shot a 63, and Stephanie Dennis had a round of 67.

Jacob Saude had the low round for the St Mary Cardinal boys golf team with a a 48 which was good for seventh place. Brandon Cook finished with a 54. Brandon Kubly had a 56, Payton Park had a 58, Luke Reecy shot a 59, Tyler Munkvold had a 60, and Jason Cook finished with a round of 86.

The Quarrier girls will host a triangular with West Central and Pipestone at Rocky Run Golf Course on Tuesday, April 18th. The Cardinal boys will be at the Chester Invite on Tuesday, April 18th.

Quarrier Boys Track Win, Girls 3rd in Volga

The Dell Rapids Quarrier boys team captured the team title at the Brace-Hopfinger Relays in Volga on Tuesday, April 11th. The Quarriers finished 191.5 points, nearly 100 points better than Castlewood. Castlewood placed second with 99 points. Sioux Valley was third with 96 points. The Quarrier girls team placed third with 96 points. Hamlin and Deubrook Area tied for first with 122 points.

Dell Rapids will travel to Beresford for the BAH Invite next Tuesday, April 18th.

Cardinal Girls Track Places 2nd at Chester, Boys 6th

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal girls and boys track teams competed in the Chester Booster Invitational Track Meet on Tuesday, April 11th, in Chester. The Cardinal girls team finished second with 94 team points. Chester Area won the girls title with 122 points. Lake Preston was third with 90 points. The Cardinal boys finished sixth with 63 points. Chester Area also won the boys title scoring 157 points. Baltic was second with 112 points, and Lake Preston was third with 73 points.

St Mary will be back in Chester on April 22nd for the Tom Main track meet.

Dell Rapids Baseball Wins Two in Madison

The Dell Rapids baseball team evened their season record after earning two wins in Madison against the Bulldogs on Sunday, April 9th.

After giving up the first run of the game, Dell Rapids scored seven runs in the second inning of the first game with the big hit being a grand slam by Matt Gillogly. Dell Rapids added another run in the third and then three more in the top of the fifth to end the game on the 10-run rule.

Carter Gullickson had three hits, including a double, along with three RBIs. Josh Roemen had two hits, and Nate McKee, Seth Anderson, and Gillogly all had a hit. Gillogly had five RBIs. Trevor Pulscher pitched all five innings giving up one run, which was unearned, on three hits with three walks and four strikeouts.

Pulscher hit a go-ahead three-run home run in the top of the eighth inning in the second game to give Dell Rapids the double-header sweep. Neither team scored through the first four innings, but Dell Rapids was able to scratch across a run on a sacrifice fly by Gullickson to score Roemen. Madison answered with four runs in the bottom half of the fifth inning to take a 4-1 lead. Dell Rapids answered scoring three times in the top of the sixth inning. Anderson scored on an error, and Brandon Geraets and Roemen scored on a double by Gullickson. Pulscher hit the game-winning home run after Elijah Story and Anderson reached to start the eighth inning.

Roemen had two hits in the second game. Story, Gillogly, Gullickson and Pulscher all had a hit as well. Gullickson and Pulscher each had three RBIs. Roemen pitched the first five innings giving up four runs, three earned, on six hits with two walks and 11 strikeouts. Story picked up the win pitching three innings giving up no runs on no hits with three walks and seven strikeouts.

Dell Rapids (3-3) will host Deuel/Deubrook/Estelline/Hamlin/Castlewood/Clear Lake on Thursday, April 13th, at Rickeman Field. Varsity will start at 5:30 with JV to follow.

Dell Rapids Chamber of Commerce Hands out Awards at Annual Banquet

The Dell Rapids Chamber of Commerce gave out three awards during their annual banquet on Saturday, April 8th, at the Rocky Run Golf Course clubhouse in Dell Rapids. The chamber handed out their annual awards of Business of the Year, Community Spirit Award, and Volunteer of the Year award.

Katie Luttmann and The Mason Jar Boutique was named the 2016 Dell Rapids Business of the Year. The Community Spirit Award was given to Rob Everist. The Volunteer of the Year was given to the Dell Rapids Connections group.

Besides the annual awards that were given, the evening also included a social hour, a catered meal by J&K Randel Catering of Dell Rapids, and a speech by inspirational business speaker and best-selling sports author Ross Bernstein. Bernstein shared his thoughts and stories about passion and keys to business success with those in attendance. He also gave away one of his books, America’s Coach, to everyone in attendance.

Hundreds Gather for Chamber Easter Egg Hunt

The Dell Rapids City Park was filled with hundreds of kids for the annual Dell Rapids Chamber of Commerce Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday, April 8th. The event was again broken into three different age groups: three-years-old and under, ages four to six, and seven-years-old and older. The eggs were hidden in three different areas of the city park for the kids to find.

The Easter Egg hunt started at 10:30 a.m., but the Easter Bunny made a visit to the park at 10:00 to take pictures with all of the kids.

Each of the age groups had a “Golden Egg” winner. The Golden Egg was exchanged for a prize package including several prizes from local businesses donated by the Dell Rapids Chamber of Commerce.
