Dell Rapids Students Honored at DSU Ceremony

MADISON, S.D., April 20, 2017 – “Believe in yourself,” is simple advice, yet it is sometimes hard to do, said South Dakota’s governor Dennis Daugaard.

“The biggest challenge we all have is believing that we can accomplish something when others doubt us and when we may doubt ourselves,” he stated.

Daugaard’s remarks were made at Dakota State University during the 2017 NCWIT (National Center for Women in IT) Award Ceremony held on campus April 12, where 17 high school women from North and South Dakota and two South Dakota technology teachers were honored with the NCWIT Aspirations in Computing (AiC) award.

Among the honorees was Janae Hahn of Dell Rapids High School, who was a Local Winner. She is planning a career in electrical engineering, math and statistics. Bergen Weiland of Dell Rapids High School was a Local Honorable Mention awardee. She is planning a career in artificial intelligence and robotics. Students were selected on the basis of their aptitude and aspirations in technology and computing, leadership ability, academic history, and plans for post-secondary education.

“We know that a sense of belonging is a key persistence factor for young women who chose computing degrees and careers,” said NCWIT CEO and Co-founder Lucy Sanders. “Not only do these awards increase the visibility of young technical women and their educators, they also grant entry into an inclusive community of peers that support each other in advancing their innovative dreams.”

AiC provides a long-term community for female technologists by encouraging persistence in computing through continuous engagement and ongoing encouragement at each pivotal stage of their educational and professional development. This is the 11th season of the Award for Aspirations in Computing (AiC), and the 6th year with regional affiliates. The South and North Dakota region honored eight winners at their first event in 2013.

To date, AiC has publicly recognized nearly 4,700 young women for their interests and achievements in technology. Seventy-one percent of those are now in college, pursuing a computer science or engineering degree. More than 150 educators have been recognized through AiC as well. Lori Goldade, district technology coordinator at Warner School District, was this year’s teacher award winner; Amber Fluth, business computer teacher at Tri-Valley, was the runner-up.

Daugaard encouraged the high school women to consider careers in computing, because the work they could do is important. In 2016, there were 1.6 million attacks on the South Dakota state government, he stated, so “we need people like you to help defend our state, defend our businesses and our nation against attackers like this.”

He also asked the girls to consider Dakota State for their academic degrees, calling the school a cyber leader in America. “It’s an excellent institution of higher learning,” he said.

“We want all of our students to experience the world as it’s going to be through the use and application of emerging and available technologies — a distinguishing feature of this institution,” said DSU President José-Marie Griffiths.

Alexis Perez, an analyst with Facebook, was another special guest at the ceremony, teaching the winners about Python coding with a hands-on project. Presenters included the NCWIT Regional Program Director Ammi Ludwick, and Dakota State University faculty Dr. Ashley Podhradsky, Pam Rowland and Dr. Kyle Cronin.

Sponsoring partners for this event were Dakota State University, AiC, National Center for Women and Information Technology, and DSU’s Center of Excellence in Computer Information Systems. Also assisting was DSU’s new CybHER outreach program, a movement to add more gender diversity to the field of cybersecurity through a variety of events and interactions.

Quarrier Track Teams 1-2 at BAH Invite

The Dell Rapids Quarrier boys track team finished first and the girls team finished second at the Beresford/Alcester-Hudston Invitational Track Meet on Tuesday, April 18th.  The boys team finished with 148 points.  Beresford was second with 121 points, and Tri-Valley finished third with 72 points.  Beresford won the girls title with 103.5 points.  The Quarriers were second with 82.5 points, and Parker and Tri-Valley tied for third in the girls standings with 77 points.

The Dell Rapids track teams will be at the Flandreau Invite on Saturday, April 22nd.

Quarrier Girls Golf Hosts Triangular

NewDRLogoThe Dell Rapids Quarrier girls golf team hosted a triangular with Pipestone, MN and West Central on Tuesday, April 18th, at Rocky Run Golf Course.  No team scores were kept during the triangular.  Kaitlyn Greenhoff finished second individually with a round of 50.  Paige Sterud also finished with a round of 50 and placed fourth.  Rose Habager had a round of 56.  Grace Tischer had a 57, Olivia Downs had a 58, Stephanie Dennis had a 65, Mallory Haak finished with a 67, and Sydney Emery had a 69.

Dell Rapids will be at the Elk Point-Jefferson Invite at Elk Point Golf Course on Thursday, April 20th.

Streak Ends for Dells Baseball

DellsvsSFR_4-18-17_1The four-game winning streak for Dell Rapids came to an end on Tuesday, April 18th.  Sioux Falls Roosevelt defeated Dell Rapids Baseball 12-2 at Rickemen Field.

SF Roosevelt scored in the top of the second inning on an RBI fielder’s choice ground out.  SF Roosevelt led 1-0 after two innings of play.  Dell Rapids tied the game in the bottom of the third on an RBI single by Nate McKee to score Josh Roemen.  SF Roosevelt scored six times in the fourth inning on three hits and two Dell Rapids errors.  SF Roosevelt scored three more times in the fifth on a two-run triple and a wild pitch.  They would also score two runs in the sixth.  Dell Rapids scored just one run in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI single by Elijah Story.

McKee had two of the three hits in the game for Dell Rapids.  Story had the other hit.  Both Story and McKee had an RBI in the game.  Roemen pitched the first four innings giving up seven runs, but just one earned, on nine hits.  Austin Ellingson pitched two innings giving up five runs, three earned, on three hits with four walks and two strikeouts.

Dell Rapids (5-4) will host Wolsey-Wessington on Friday, April 21st.  The varsity will play at 5:30 p.m. with the JV to follow.

Cardinal Golf at Chester Invite

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal boys golf team participated in the Chester Golf Invite at the Lakes Golf Course on Tuesday, April 18th.  Lane Reecy had the low round for the Cardinals at 94.  Jacob Saude finished the 18-hole tournament with a 100.  Garret Frost and Brandon Kubly both finished with a 117.  Luke Reecy finished with a 133, and Tyler Munkvold had a round of 136.

The Cardinals will be in Flandreau for the Flandreau Invite on Thursday, April 20th.

Dorothy Simmons

Dorothy SimmonsDorothy B. Simmons, age 84, of Brookings, died Sunday, April 9, 2017, at the Brookings Hospital. Funeral services were held on, April 12, 2017, at Eidsness Funeral Home with burial to follow in Greenwood Cemetery. On-line condolences may be left at the Eidsness Funeral Home website.

Dorothy Sheridan Simmons was born to Joseph and Esther (Adamson) Sheridan on July 29, 1932, in Litchfield, Minnesota. She was baptized and confirmed in St. Phillips Church, and attended Litchfield public schools.

In 1949, she moved with her family to Hutchinson, Minnesota. She was employed at the 3-M Company, where she met and later married Calvin Simmons at the Vinyard Methodist Church in Hutchinson on August 11, 1950. The couple moved to Brookings, South Dakota in 1970.

Survivors include sons, Tom (Marvel) Simmons of Dell Rapids, SD, Kurt (Carol) Simmons of Columbia, MO, Jim Simmons of Brookings, SD; daughter, Barbara (Tom) Lanning of Crooks, SD; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; sisters Vonnie Orbin of Cloquet, MN, Lorraine Halstrom of Largo, FL, Ruth Rettman of Fayetteville, NC, and brother Gene Sheridan of Henderson, NV.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband Calvin in 2004; her parents; a sister, Dona Brown of Litchfield, MN; and a brother, Robert Sheridan of Willmar, MN.

Memorials may be directed to the First United Methodist Church in Brookings, or ADVANCE.

Four Straight for Dells Baseball

DellsBaseballLogoDell Rapids picked up their fourth straight win on Monday, April 17th, after an 11-0 victory in Baltic.

Dell Rapids scored in the top of the second inning after an RBI groundout by Keegan Miller to score Nate McKee.  Dell Rapids led 1-0 after the second inning.  Dell Rapids then scored four times in the top of the third inning.  Carter Gullickson had an RBI walk, McKee was hit by a pitch to score another run, Josh Roemen scored on a passed ball, and Miller had an RBI single.  Dell Rapids added six runs in the top of the sixth on hits by Roemen and JD Holm.

Adrian Juba, Elijah Story, Roemen, Holm, Gullickson, and Miller all had hits in the game.  Roemen and Miller had two RBIs each.  Holm, McKee, and Gullickson each had an RBI.  Trevor Pulscher started the game on the mound pitching three innings giving up three hits while walking one and striking out one.  Gullickson pitched the final three innings giving up two hits while walking one and striking out five.

Dell Rapids (5-3) will host Sioux Falls Roosevelt on Tuesday, April 18th, at 5:30 p.m. at Rickeman Field.

Warming House on National Register of Historic Places

WarmingHouseApril 12, 2017:  From a press release on the South Dakota State News website, two South Dakota properties were recently added to the National Register of Historic Places, according to the South Dakota State Historical Society. The listed properties are the Dell Rapids Warming House and the Arlington Masonic Temple.

The National Register is the official federal list of properties identified as important in American history, architecture, archaeology, engineering and culture. The State Historic Preservation Office of the State Historical Society works in conjunction with the National Park Service, which oversees the National Register program, to list the properties.

“South Dakota’s history is rich in American Indian culture, pioneer life and change,” said Jay D. Vogt, state historic preservation officer and director of the State Historical Society. “Properties listed on the National Register are important for their role in South Dakota’s culture, heritage and history. And when properties get listed, it shows that their owners take pride in their role in preserving that culture, heritage and history.”

Buildings, sites, structures and objects at least 50 years old possessing historical significance may qualify for the National Register, according to Vogt. Properties must also maintain their historic location, design, materials and association. Listing on the National Register does not place any limitations on private property owners by the federal government.

The Dell Rapids Warming House was built around 1930 using local rose-colored quartzite. It is located next to the river at the end of State Ave. The warming house is listed in the National Register as significant for its association with the historical themes of entertainment and recreation in the early 20th century. At the time, ice skating was a popular national pastime and an integral part of life in Dell Rapids during the winter months.

Dennis Whipkey

DennisDennis L. Whipkey, 69, a retired farmer from Trent, passed away on Saturday, April 15, 2017 at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls. His funeral service will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 22, 2017 in the Trent Baptist Church. Interment will be in the Trent Cemetery. Visitation will begin at noon on Friday, April 21, 2017 at Kahler Funeral Home. The family will be present from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m with a prayer service beginning at 7:00 p.m. On-line condolences may be left at the Kahler Funeral Home website.

Dennis was born on September 3, 1947 in Sioux Falls. He grew up and attended school in Trent, graduating in 1965. He was an avid railroad enthusiast and loved to watch and read about trains. He was very knowledgeable about trains. He farmed west of Trent until he retired in 2014 due to declining health. He continued to live on the farm until the time of his death.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Vinson and Frances Whipkey; an infant brother and his sister-in-law, Mary Ann Whipkey.

He is survived by his brothers, Ron (Marlene) of Sac City, IA, Loren (Jeanie) of Farmington, MN and Allen (Bernadette) of Northfield, MN; his six nieces and nephews, Terri, Troy, Brian, Lisa, Lindsay and Erin and his many cousins and friends.

Margie Phillips

Margie PhillipsMargie Phillips, age 75, of Madison, died on Sunday, April 16, 2017 at the Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls. Funeral service will be 11:00 AM on Thursday, April 20th at St. John Lutheran Church, Madison with Rev. Shelly Gehring officiating. Visitation will be 5-7 PM on Wednesday at Weiland Funeral Chapel and will continue on Thursday one hour prior to the service at the church. Inurnment will be in St. Thomas Cemetery at a later date. Margaret Ruth Stahl Phillips was born October 3, 1941 in Madison, SD, the daughter of Jack & Eleanore (McGee) Stahl. She graduated from Madison High School in 1959 and attended St. Mary-of-the-Woods College in Terre Haute, IN and moved on to Rochester Junior College in Rochester, MN graduate of the Class of 1962.

In 1962, she married Bill Harrington and to this union four children were born. In 1976, she married Gene Phillips and they returned to Madison where they still reside. She was appointed by Governor George Mickelson to the South Dakota Board of Regents in 1989. She served on this board for 3 ½ years and resigned due to health problems. Margie was an insulin dependent diabetic for 64 years. She was employed by the Madison Career Learning Center as a career counselor; previous to that, she was executive director of the Karl E. Mundt Historical and Educational Foundation on the campus of Dakota State University. She started and developed Balloons Because…a balloon bouquet business with 22 outlets in SD and IA. Margie also developed Writers Ink, a writing service business. In the mid 70’s she was employed by KSOO-KPAT radio stations in Sioux Falls as continuity director.

A priority interest of hers was Republican politics from national to local levels. She was chairman for House Majority leader Jerome Lammers campaigns; a staff member of the Leo Thorsness for US Senate campaign; office secretary for the Minnehaha County Republican Party; Lake County Republican Party chairman and vice chairman and several other volunteer positions in the Republican Party in MI, CA and SD.

Some of the organizations she was affiliated with were the SD Board of Regents, SD Development Corporation, SD American Diabetes Association; Juvenile Diabetes Association, Sioux Falls, SD; Lake County Helpline for abused women and children; Just Say No To Drugs in SD; Karl Mundt Foundation Board; Prairie Repertory Theatre; Dakota Prairie Playhouse project; Lake County Cancer Society, Lake/Kingsbury Red Cross; Madison Library Board; and the Madison Central School Educational Foundation.

Because both of her parents’ families came to Madison in 1878/1880, she was a member of the First Family Society of Lake County.

Margie and her husband, Gene, each received the Madison Chamber of Commerce Distinguished Service Award in 1992. In 2006, she was given the Outstanding Friend of Education award for her work in helping to raise funds for the Madison High School computer effort. She and her husband received the Legends and Legacy Philanthropy 2009 award from Dakota State University for their contributions to the school.

Margie is survived by her husband, Gene of Madison; daughter, Elizabeth Harrington of Minneapolis; son, Patrick (Nikki) Harrington of Dell Rapids; stepson, Chad (Becky) Phillips of Sioux Falls; 5 grandchildren, Tana & Tyra Harrington, Cameron (Zecyn) Phillips, Chase Phillips and Katie Harrington; 5 great-grandchildren, Alina & Loren Phillips and Evaleigh, Jordan & Raelynn Phillips; (Diana) Stahl of Blowing Rock, NC; sister, Mary (Jim) Ingram of Oldsmar, FL; sisters-in-law, Ann Stahl of Minneapolis Sarah Bolton Stahl of York, PA and Diana Stahl of Blowing Rock, NC; three brothers-in-law, Gerry (LeAnne) Phillips of Sioux Falls, Glenn (Cheri) Phillips of Crystal City, MO and Gary (Glennette) Phillips of Logan, UT and sister-in-law, Gail (Barney) Madler of Rapid City; several nieces & nephews and one cousin, Mary Ruth Dorsher of Chicago.

She was preceded in death by two infant sons, John Harrington and William Patrick Harrington; her parents; brothers, Thomas Harmon Stahl & Jack (John F. Jr.) and a brother-in-law, George Phillips.
