Cardinal Girls Track Team Breaks Three Records

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal girls track team broke three records at the Tom Main Invitational track meet in Chester on Saturday, April 22nd.  Maddie Schwebach broke Carol Gengler’s 1975 record (109’4″) in the discuss with a state-qualifying throw of 109’10”.  The 4x800m relay team of Cassy Geraets, Tana Harrington, Christina Vogel, and Ella Heinitz broke a 2008 record with a state-qualifying time of 10:29.4.  The old 4x800m relay record held by Kiley Wolles, JJ Everist, Brooke Wolles, and Robyn Everist was 10:40.9.  Heinitz also broke Mary Schwebach’s 1996 1:03.0 record in the 400m run with a time of 1:02.6.

The girls team finished fifth with a total of 59 team points.  Chester Area won the girls title with 112 points.  Viborg-Hurley was second with 87 points, and Colman-Egan placed third with 73.50 points.  The Cardinal boys team finished 10th with a total of 20 points.  Viborg-Hurley won the boys title with 111 points.  Chester Area and Colman-Egan tied for second with 99 points, and Garretson was fourth with 78 points.

St Mary will be at the Estelline Alumni Meet on Tuesday, April 25th.

Quarrier Track Results in Flandreau

NewDRLogoBoth the Dell Rapids Quarrier girls and boys track teams had a great day at the Flandreau Invitational track meet on Saturday, April 22nd.  No team team scores were held in the event, but Dell Rapids had many athletes place in the top eight of their events.

The Quarriers will be at the Terry Bong Invite in Canton on Thursday, April 27th, for their next meet.

Lena Hauser

Lena HauserLena L. Hauser, 95, went to her heavenly home Monday, April 17 at Avera Bormann Manor in Parkston. Funeral was held on April 21 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Parkston. On-line condolences may be left at the Koehn Bros. Funeral Home website.

Lena was born June 9, 1921 to Joseph G. and Anna C. (Kleinsasser) Kleinsasser in Chasley, ND. At the age of 5, her family moved to Freeman, SD where she attended school. She was united in marriage to Lawrence Hauser on October 16, 1940 in Parkston, SD. They owned and operated an ice business which was prior to the advent of the refrigerator. Lena worked had a thirst for knowledge which led her to obtain her GED in 1960. She worked for Farmers State Ins. and later owned and operated Hauser Ins. Eventually, she started her own real estate business in Parkston. Lena enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, especially her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a devoted Christian who believed in the power of prayer. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and Altar Society, Women’s Relief Corp. and was a Cub Scout, Brownie Scout and 4-H leader. She enjoyed reading, gardening, sewing and crocheting, camping, fishing and playing cards.

Grateful for having shared her life are her 3 Children: Joyce Weber of Dimock, SD; Louis (Judy E.) Hauser of Parkston and Mary Pfeiffer of Yankton, SD; a daughter-in-law, Kaye Hauser of Mitchell, SD; 13 grandchildren: Shelly Hauser of Sioux Falls, SD; Mark Hauser of Chicago, IL; Kristi (Ben) Wagner of Hutchinson, MN; Douglas (Gaylynn) Weber of Mitchell; Debra (Mark) Lillie of Sioux Falls; Jolyn (Dave) Doering of Parkston; Jody (Mike) Scott of Parkston; Jennifer (Travis) Leischner of Parkston; Tammara (Shannon) Tjaden of Dell Rapids, SD; Jason (Joni) Pfeiffer of Anoka, MN; Justine (Senta) Pfeiffer of Sioux Falls; Tara (Chad) Stadem of Sioux Falls; and Ashley Pfeiffer of Dakota Dunes, SD; and 28 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Lawrence; a son, Larry Hauser; daughter-in-law, Judy K. Hauser; son-in-law, Vince Weber; and 7 siblings: Benny Kleinsasser, Harry Kleinsasser, Gilbert Kleinsasser, Elmer Hofer, Gene Hofer, Lillian (Hofer) Kryger and Jimmy Hofer.

Nadine Mikel

Nadine MikelNadine A. Mikel, age 82, of Madison, died Monday, April 10, 2017, at the Bethel Lutheran Home in Madison. Funeral services will be 1:00 pm, Saturday, April 15, 2017 at the United Methodist Church. Burial will be at Graceland Cemetery with Military Honors by the Madison American Legion and VFW. Nadine A. Robson was born on November 15, 1934 to Glen and Pearl (Bryan) Robson. She attended Madison High School where she graduated in 1953. Following graduation, she enlisted in the US Army and served as a Corporal and received Medical Technician Training from 1954-1956 during the Korean War. Nadine then attended the Methodist School of Nursing in Mitchell, SD, where she graduated in 1963. She married Joyce Mikel on March 6, 1965, at Madison. Nadine’s career consisted of many duties involving nursing. Her longest nursing position was as a staff nurse at the Madison Community Hospital where she worked for 30 years. Nadine was an avid doll collector. She was a member of the United Methodist Church, Doll Lovers Club, Retired Nurses Assn. and Writers, INC, even having a poem published in “Great Poems of Today” entitled “Caring”. She received many awards including; Gene Haug Award for best bedside nurse from the Methodist School of Nursing, District Nurse of the Year from the SD Nurses Association, WAC of the Month from Ft. Benning, GA, and Employee of the Month from Madison Community Hospital.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, on January 23, 2000, one sister, Evelyn Edwards, and two brothers-in-law Vernon Lebahn and Dawson Priestman, one niece and one nephew.

Survivors include her brother, Ronald (Janet) Robson of Madison; four sisters, Arlea Lebahn of Fremont, NE, Marie Priestman of Flagstaff, AZ, Nina (Dick) Dressen of Dell Rapids, and Bonnie (Lowell) Miller of Raleigh, NC; sister-in-law, Bulah Steinberg of Madison; brother-in-law, Harold Edwards of Vermillion; special niece, Cindy (David) Lias of Vermillion; and several other nieces and nephews.

Roger Haak

Roger HaakRoger Haak, 65, of Dell Rapids, passed away unexpectedly at his home on Thursday, April 20, 2017 of an apparent heart attack. His Memorial Service will begin at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, April 24, 2017 in Kahler Funeral Home Chapel. Visitation with the family present will be one hour prior to the start of the service.

Roger Haak was born on August 4, 1951 to Alven and Alpha (Flaten) Haak in Dell Rapids, SD. He grew up on the family farm east of Dell Rapids. He attended school in Dell Rapids graduating from DRHS in 1969. After high school he enlisted in the Army National Guard and began farming with his father. He remained on the farm until his time of death.

He enjoyed everything about farming. He had his private pilot license and loved spending time with his sisters in California taking care of their horses.

Roger was preceded in death by his parents and an infant niece.

He is survived by his brothers, Jerome (Betty) Haak of Dell Rapids and David (Lee) Haak of Custer; his sisters, Joyce (Paul) Brook of Romona, CA and Diane (Phil) Wolfe of San Diego, CA; his eight nephews and his five nieces; his six great nephews and one great niece and his extended family and friends.

Road Construction Continues in Dell Rapids

DellRapidsTowerRoads continue to be updated in and around Dell Rapids this spring and summer.

10th street was just recently closed for completion.  Removals and grading work is now beginning for 10th Street.  Curb and guttering will take place in the next few weeks, and the asphalting of the street will follow.  The sidewalk install and grading of the yard behind the curb will be the last steps.  Substantial completion date for the 10th Street project has been set for June 10th.

City Administration was informed by the South Dakota Department of Transportation that the Hwy 115 bridge will be opened by May 1st.  That is also the same day that Interstate 29 overpass is scheduled to be closed for that project.  During the last regular meeting, the Dell Rapids City Council approved city administration to arrange a meeting with LG Everist, the I-29 project contractor, and the SD DOT to discuss a temporary truck route south through on Garfield Ave to Quartzite St.

Non-Meandered Waters Update

dan_ahlersOver the past few weeks, many of you have stopped by my business to talk about non-meandered waters. Some to share your concerns and others to ask what is the issue. Periodically, during the legislative interim, I will submit articles to keep you updated on these issues that impact our state.

Non-meandered waters refer to bodies of water that you can cross without walking around. During the 1800’s, South Dakota surveyed all the bodies of water across the state. The bodies of water that were classified as “non-meandered” were considered to be owned by the private land owner. In the 1990’s, flooding caused many of these bodies of water to grow. Some of these bodies of water connected with other waters like Lake Thompson or reached public access points.

Many of these waters, by definition, would no longer be considered non-meandered. The question becomes, who owns the rights to the water? Technically, all the lakes in South Dakota are considered public domain. In the case of these disputed bodies of water, the land is still privately owned. The issue is further complicated by the fact that Game, Fish and Parks has been stocking these waters with fish and building docks on public access points.

This issue of water and land rights culminated in the State Supreme Court opinion Duerre v. Hepler. The result of the Supreme Court ruling is the Game, Fish and Parks cannot facilitate access to non-meandered waters for recreational purposes. To comply with this ruling, the GFP has fenced public access points to these lakes and posted signs. The Supreme Court has instructed the legislature to determine whether and how the public may use non-meandered waters for recreational purposes.

Unfortunately, the timing of the Supreme Court decision doesn’t lend itself to a timely solution. The legislature will not convene for session until January 2018. This issue for landowners, sportsmen and small business owners will not be resolved during the interim. That will mean a negative impact on many South Dakota small businesses and communities that rely on the fishing industry.

After session, I received the Supreme Court decision on non-meandered waters. I had been unaware that this was an issue. Upon further research, I learned that this issue had been brought forward to the legislature on several occasions. A representative offered to bring a bill during this session, but the Governor and GFP told him to wait. I am deeply disappointed that this issue was not resolved during session. As a result, an entire South Dakota industry will suffer.

On April 18th, the legislature’s Executive Board determined we will make non-meandered waters a summer study. The scope of the study will include the Supreme Court opinion, private property protections, public access, regulation and management of non-meandered waters. The study will also define recreational use and review past legislation on this subject. The first meeting will be held in Pierre on April 27th. No public testimony will occur at this meeting. The public will have an opportunity to testify at future meetings. The committee will be considering meetings at different locations across the state to encourage more public feedback. Cardinal Golf Fifth in Flandreau

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal boys golf team placed fifth at the Flandreau High School Golf Invite on Friday, April 21st.  The Cardinals finished with a team score of 354.  Colman-Egan was first with a score of 241.  Chester placed second with a 258, and Garreton was third with a team score of 260.

Carson Park had the low score for the Cardinals with a 109.  Jacob Eining fished with a round of 110.  Jason Cook had a 133, and Dalton Houska finished with a round of 135.

St Mary will host the St Mary Invite at Rocky Run Golf Course on Monday, April 24th.

Mary Ann Klein

Mary Ann KleinMary Ann Klein, 93, of Dell Rapids, passed away on Wednesday, April 19, 2017 at the Dells Nursing and Rehab Center. Her Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 22, 2017 in St. Mary Catholic Church, Dell Rapids. Visitation will begin at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, April 21, 2017 in St. Mary Catholic Church with a wake service at 6:00 p.m. followed by a family rosary.  On-line condolences may be left at the Kahler Funeral Home website.

Mary Ann Klein, daughter of John Klein and Frances (Hansen) Klein, was born on August 5, 1923. Mary Ann graduated from St. Mary High School in 1942. Mary Ann was first employed at the First National Bank in Dell Rapids and then worked for 12 years at the gas Utility Company before moving to Aberdeen SD in 1966. In Aberdeen, Mary Ann worked as a bookkeeper and secretary until her retirement. In her retirement years, Mary Ann was involved with the Senior Companion Program which she enjoyed very much. In addition she was a faithful member of Sacred Heart Parish and did other volunteer work.

In 2008, Mary Ann moved to Dell Rapids to be closer to her family. She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church. Over the years Mary Ann enjoyed crocheting, cooking, flowers and her bird watching. Mary Ann had a generous heart and a deep faith. She loved to laugh and enjoyed sharing a joke or two.

Mary Ann spent many years caring for her nieces and nephews as they were born. She has 45 nieces and nephews and 6 godchildren. The nieces and nephews have continued to be a special part of her life.

She is preceded in death by her parents, four brothers Art, Pete, Bob and Clarence; three sisters Matilda Gebhart, Frances Klein and Priscilla Klein.

Quarrier Girls Golf Second at Elk Point-Jefferson

NewDRLogoThe Dell Rapids Quarrier girls golf team finished second as a team at the Elk Point-Jefferson Huskies Girls Golf Invitational on Thursday, April 20th.  Dell Rapids finished with a team score of 384.  Canton won the team title with a score of 363.  Lennox was third with a 387, and Vermillion placed fourth with a team score of 396.

Three Quarrier golfers finished in the top 15 at the tournament.  Kaitlyn Greenhoff finished fourth with a round of 89.  Paige Sterud was 10th with a round of 95, and Rose Habager placed 13th with a round of 97.  Olivia Downs finished the day wiht a 103, Mallory Haak had a 116, and Grace Tischer finished with a 129.

Dell Rapids will be at the Dakota Valley Invite on Tuesday, April 25th, at Two Rivers Golf Course.
