Quiz Bowl and Vocal Ensembles Shine for Dell Rapids

NewDRLogoMembers of the Dell Rapids High School choir participated in a solo and ensemble contest held at Augustana University on Monday, March 12th.  Ten students made the trip to Sioux Falls, and those ten students performed in eight events.

The quartet of Kat Fletcher, Abby Stauffenecker, Jay Holm, and Mitchell Heinemann earned an excellent rating.  Alec Saxon and Heinemann earned a superior rating for their duet.  More impressive is the fact that Saxon was working on the duet with another student prior to the contest, but that student caught the flu and couldn’t perform.  Heinemann sight-sang the piece with Saxon.  Fletcher and Mercedes Lodmell earned a superior for their duet.  Chloe Fischer and Anna Symens earned an excellent rating for their duet.  Stauffenecker and Allison Hegg earned a superior in duet.  Lodmell earned a superior for her solo.  Peyton Gleason also earned a superior for his solo.  Stauffenecker earned an excellent on her solo performance.

The Dell Rapids Quiz Bowl Team One earned a second place finish at the Dak XII Conference quiz bowl meet on Monday, March 12th.  The team scored a total of 96 points in the competition.  Canton won the event with 119 points.  West Central placed third with 90 points.

Veronica Scholten

VeronicaScholtenVeronica Scholten, 93, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, formerly of Larchwood, Iowa, died Friday, March 2, 2018 at Avera Prince of Peace in Sioux Falls. Mass of Christian Burial was held Saturday, March 10 at 10:30 AM at St. Mary’s Catholic Church of Larchwood with Father Joseph Scholten and Father Francis Makwinja celebrating the Mass. Burial followed at Larchwood Cemetery. Visitation, with the family present, was held Friday, March 9 at the church from 6:30-7:30 PM. A prayer service followed the visitation at 7:30 PM. Veronica Agnes Snyders, daughter of Joseph and Lorena (Ripperda) Snyders, was born on June 27, 1924 at Larchwood, Iowa. She graduated from St. Mary’s Catholic High School in Larchwood in 1942. On October 17, 1944 Veronica was united in marriage with Joseph Scholten at St. Mary’s Catholic church in Larchwood. They made their home on an acreage southwest of Larchwood where they raised their 14 children grounded in the Catholic faith.  In 1987, she moved to Dell Rapids, South Dakota. Joe died on September 27, 1997. Veronica moved to Prince of Peace in Sioux Falls, South Dakota in January 2013.

Veronica was a loving and devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She had a special devotion to Mary, praying at least one rosary daily.  She was a member of St. Mary’s Altar Society in Larchwood and the Legion of Mary Altar Society in Dell Rapids. Veronica mastered embroidering, she enjoyed bowling, playing cards, Minnesota Twins baseball, fishing outings with Donald and Helen, and later in life she enjoyed the trips with her siblings. She treasured all the times and traditions shared with her family and friends.

She is survived by 12 children, Ken Scholten of Salem, South Dakota, Judy (Norman) Hansen of Saint Joseph, Minnesota, Sharon (David) Weiland of Dell Rapids, Nancy (Jim) Weiland of Dell Rapids, Peggy Scholten of Sioux City, Iowa, Susan (Tim) Lund of Larchwood, Tom (Theresa) Scholten of Sioux Falls, Monica (Dan) Collenbaugh of Rock Valley, Iowa, Adam Scholten of Sioux Falls, Robert (Cheri) Scholten of Miller, South Dakota, Joleen (Duane) Bos of Harrisburg, South Dakota, and Steve (Joyce) Scholten of Dell Rapids; son-in-law, Patrick Geraets of Dell Rapids; 64 grandchildren; 97 great-grandchildren; 7 great-great-grandchildren; brother, James (Lorraine) Snyders of Sioux Falls; sister, Dorothy Kelly of Mesa, Arizona; and  3 sisters-in-law, Pat Snyders, Shirley Scholten, and Regina (Mick) Willet.

Veronica was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Lorena; husband, Joe; 2 daughters, Joanne Geraets and Mary Ellen Scholten; 8 grandchildren, Andrew Weiland, Angela Hofer, Michael Scholten, Samuel, John, Michael, Catherine and Kim Scholten; great-grandchild, Alex Geraets; 4 brothers, John, Bernard, Robert, and Raymond Snyders; sister, Theresa Bruggeman; and an infant sister, Marcella Snyders.

Big Sioux River Rip Rap Project Completed

The Big Sioux River rip rap project in Dell Rapids was recently completed by Dakota Clearing and Grading along with help from the city crew.  The project consisted of adding rip rap to the north and south banks of the Big Sioux River to spots both east and west of the Garfield Ave bridge.

“We got that in on probably the last window frame of time that we could have possibly got it in because as soon as they were done, the temperatures warmed up quite a bit and it would been too sloppy to be out there moving heavy equipment around.  Dakota Clearing and Grading did it in about three to three and a half days, and did a really great job,” said City Administrator Justin Weiland during the Dell Rapids City Council’s regular meeting on Monday, March 5th.

Weiland also noted that LG Everist needed to be recognized for the project as well for being the “good-neighbor company they are.”  LG Everist contributed all the material to assist the city with the project.

Quarrier Streak and Season Ends in Round of 16

In a raucous atmosphere at the Winner Armory, the Pine Ridge Thorpes stunned the #6 seeded Dell Rapids Quarriers 69-66 in the Round of 16 on Thursday, March 8th.  The win by Pine Ridge ended an 11-game winning streak for Dell Rapids and sent the Thorpes to the State A tournament.

Dell Rapids delivered the first blow in the game getting out to an 8-0 lead in the first minute and a half.  The Quarriers were on fire throughout the first quarter scoring 29 points.  Logan Heim led the way going four-for-four on three points shots in the first quarter helping Dell Rapids to a 29-16 lead after at the first quarter break.  The Quarrier lead grew to 15 points at 33-18 after a made three-point shot by Mason Schmidt and a made free throw by Drew Van Regenmorter with 5:23 to go in the second quarter.  Dell Rapids maintained an eight-to-twelve point lead throughout the second quarter.  Jeffrey Schuch made a three-point shot from the left wing with 2:03 to go to give Dell Rapids a 40-28 lead.  Pine Ridge, however, scored the final five points of the quarter to cut the lead to seven at 40-33 at halftime.

The Thorpes scored the first three points of the third quarter to cut the lead to 40-36.  Schuch ended the Pine Ridge 8-0 run with a layup from the left side with 6:00 to play in the third quarter.  The two teams traded three-point shots over the next :30, and Dell Rapids held a 45-41 lead with 5:20 to go.  Dell Rapids was able to maintain the four-point lead over the next 3:00 of play.  The Thorpes went on a quick 4-0 spurt with Corey Brown tying the game at 49-49 with 1:50 to play.  Pine Ridge then closed out the quarter on a 4-1 run.  The Thorpes outscored Dell Rapids 20-10 in the third quarter and led 53-50 heading into the fourth quarter.

Dell Rapids then went on a 4-1 run to open the fourth quarter as Schuch tied the game at 54-54 with 5:45 to play.  The two teams traded baskets again.  The game was tied 56-56 with 5:18 to go.  Schuch gave Dell Rapids a 58-56 lead after an offensive rebound and put back with 4:43 left to play.  The game was again tied at 59-59 with 2:55 remaining.  After a timeout, Brown got a tough shot over Schuch to go through to give Pine Ridge a 61-59 lead with 2:40 to go.  Schuch again got a driving layup to fall on a nice pass from Carson Rentz to tie the game at 61-61 with 2:02 to play.  The Thorpes scored the next four points and led 65-61 with :37 left.  On the next Dell Rapids possessions, Rentz was fouled on a three-point shot giving him three free throws.  Rentz made all three to cut the lead to 65-64 with :21 on the clock.  After a foul and two made free throws by Pine Ridge, Dell Rapids had an open three-point shot with :12 to go that would have tied the game, but the shot was too strong and Thorpes got the defensive rebound.  Dell Rapids was forced to foul, and Corey Blacksmith made both free throws to give Pine Ridge a 69-64 lead.  Rentz made a last-second shot at the buzzer, but Pine Ridge came away victorious.

Dell Rapids finished the game shooting 41% from the field.  They were just 23% from three-point area and 67% from the free-throw line.  The Quarriers had a total of 35 team rebounds and 21 team assists.

Schuch led Dell Rapids with 21 points, 11 rebounds, and five assists.  Mason Schmidt added 17 points.  Heim finished with 12 points, 15 rebounds, and six assists.  Elijah Story and Rentz both finished with six points in the game.  Rentz also had seven assists.

Dell Rapids has their season come to an end with an overall record of 17-5.

2018 SD Legislative Sessions – Dan Ahlers Week 8 Update

dan_ahlersGreetings from Pierre. We have one week left of session. I will provide an update on some of this week’s bills as well as an update on the Appropriation budget hearings.

During this session, there has been a silent assault on the ballot initiative and constitutional amendment process. SB 9 & 13 are another example of changes to make this process difficult for voters. These bills require fiscal notes to be attached to ballot measures. While understanding the potential cost of a change in law is important, the way in which the information is disseminated is equally important. These bills require the information to be included on the ballot. This requirement makes the ballot longer and more difficult for voters to navigate. Proponents of this measure know that the average voter will vote not to change a law or amend the constitution if the measure appears to be complicated. Another problem with this requirement is a fiscal note is an anticipated cost. As we learned with Marsy’s Law, many of the anticipated costs were never incurred.

Term limits have been part of this year’s issues and bills in Pierre. SB 80 & 89 set term limits for members of the Board of Regents and Board of Education. Full disclosure, I do not like term limits. Term limits set an artificial maximum not based in fact or merit. We have always had a form of term limits called elections. If we do not like our representation, we can elect someone else. Term limits give bureaucracy, lobbyists and other entities more power. These institutions do not answer to the people. When we limit a public servant’s service without cause, we cheat ours institutions of knowledge, experience and opportunity. These bills were brought because of one person that recently retired from one the boards. People felt that this individual had too much power and influence over the process. Regardless of the merits to this claim, we should not legislate due to one bad player. Should we throw out the Electoral College because we have Donald Trump as President? (Maybe that’s not the best example). These board positions are appointed by the Governor and must be voted on by the State Senate. If a person is doing a poor job, then it is the duty of the State Senate to not approve the appointment. If this person really had too much power and was abusing his position, it is the failure of the legislative body that continues to approve the appointment.

In Appropriations, we voted to approve the veteran’s cemetery located near Sioux Falls. The committee will appropriate $600,000 toward the application process. The bill also requires an endowment to be established and minimum $3m in the fund by 2023. This money will go to operational expenses. Once the project is completed, the $600,000 from the state will be refunded by the federal government and be deposited in the endowment. The Appropriations Committee has started the budget setting process. We break each department down into their individual units and set the budget. For example, in the Department of Revenue under audits, there is request for 5 auditors. The Appropriations Committee denied this request saving $327,293. As we continue this process, the committee will make similar reductions and additions to reflect our spending priorities. This year, there will be targeted increase and an inflationary increase for community based providers, an inflationary increase for education and an increase for state employees.

2018 SD Legislative Sessions – Tom Pischke Week 8 Update

Pischke_2017The South Dakota Legislature concluded its eight week of session on Thursday.  We had a busy week in the House dealing with all of the bills that passed through the Senate.  On one day, we dealt over 30 bills, which is large number to be debated in one day.  As the session is now winding down, we are focusing on finalizing the budget and choosing our priorities in what should be funded and with how many dollars.

HOUSE UPDATES

•SB 105 allows a physician to administer a toxicology test on a newborn baby (neonate is the first 28 days of life) if the child exhibits symptoms of illness related to drug abuse. SB 105 includes a provision to exempt a healthcare provider from criminal and civil liability both if this test is administered and if in good faith the provider decides against performing a toxicology test. SB 105 passed Senate Health and Human Services 6-1 and passed the Senate Floor 33-2. In the House it passed the Judiciary Committee 10-1 and the House Floor 59-5.

•SB 84 prohibits any state agency from entering into a confidential settlement with a third party. All settlements requiring monetary damages or equitable relief shall be a matter of public record. SB 84 passed Senate Judiciary 5-2 and passed the Senate Floor 21-13. However, it failed in House Judiciary 10-3.

•SB 64 changes the penalties for trafficking a minor. Previously, the criminal penalty for attempted trafficking was less severe than if the trafficking was completed. However, since many human traffickers are caught in  stings, which only allows a criminal charge for attempted trafficking, in that scenario the offender would receive half the prison sentence. SB 64 changes statute so that attempted trafficking and trafficking both receive the same criminal penalty. SB 64 passed Senate Judiciary 6-0 and the Senate Floor 34-0. In the House it came through both House Judiciary and the House floor with zero no votes.

•SB 9 would require a fiscal note, compiled by LRC, to accompany both initiated measures and constitutional amendments to determine the cost or lack thereof to the state upon passage. This bill passed Senate State Affairs 7-2 and Passed the Senate Floor 29-6. In the House it passed State Affairs 8-2 and the House Floor 58-9.

SENATE UPDATES

•HB 1199 Banned collective bargaining at the regental schools. HB 1199 passed the House. However, after passing the Senate State Affairs Committee 5-4 HB199 failed on the Senate Floor 16-18.

•HJR 1004 would submit to the voters for approval changes to the victim’s rights or “Marsy’s Law” constitutional amendment passed in 2016. HJR 1004 clarifies certain provisions of the law and allows law enforcement to release certain information regarding criminal activity. HJR 1004 passed the House State Affairs Committee 13-0 and passed the House Floor without opposition. The Senate Taxation Committee concurred 6-0 and it passed the Senate Floor 27-8.

•HB 1311 would change legislator salaries from 6,000 dollars a year to one fifth of South Dakota’s median income as defined by the U.S census and would be adjusted by the South Dakota Board of Finance. HB 1311 passed the House State Affairs Committee 10-4 and passed the House Floor 50-16. HB 1311 will be heard in Senate State Affairs.

•HB 1081 expands the sunset clause for the non-meandered waters compromise until 2021. This bill passed House State Affairs 11-1 and passed the House Floor 51-12. HB 1081 passed Senate Agriculture 7-2 and Passed the Senate Floor 20-15.

•HB 1100 requires a printed name to go along with a signature on all public contracts. The reason for this change is a public contract involving an illegible signature. This bill passed State Affairs unanimously and passed the House Floor with one no vote. HB 1100 passed the House Judiciary Committee 5-0 and passed the Senate Floor 33-0.

•HB 1264 authorizes the construction of a precision agriculture classroom and laboratory at SDSU. HB 1264 passed House State Affairs 13-0 and passed the House Floor 66-0. It will be heard in Senate Appropriations on Monday.

Ten Dell Rapids Lifters Compete at State Powerlifting Event

Six lifters from Dell Rapids and four from Dell Rapids St Mary competed in the South Dakota State Powerlifting meet held at Brandon Valley High School on Saturday, March 3rd.  The Dell Rapids had a third place team finish with two individual champions.

Eleventh Straight Sends Quarriers to Round of 16

It wasn’t easy, but the Dell Rapids Quarriers won their 11th straight game and earned a trip to the Class A Boys Round of 16 with a 60-50 win over the Tri-Valley Mustangs in the semifinal round of the Region 3A tournament at the Elmen Center in Sioux Falls on Friday, March 2nd.

Dell Rapids raced to a 12-2 advantage early in the first quarter, which would be their largest lead of the game until late in the fourth quarter. The Mustangs closed out the first quarter on a 7-0 run, and Dell Rapids led 12-9 after the first quarter. Tri-Valley scored the first five points of the second quarter and took the lead 14-12. The two teams traded points throughout much of the second quarter. Dell Rapids still had the lead at 28-27 at halftime.

The Quarriers led for most of the third quarter, but never by more than four points. However, Tri-Valley again took the lead after a made three-point shot by Noah Jewett with 2:27 to go in the quarter. The made shot gave the Mustangs a 37-36 lead. Logan Heim scored on a quick inbound pass with 1:55 remaining to give the lead back to Dell Rapids at 38-37. The two teams again traded baskets over the next couple of possessions. Carson Rentz made a three-point shot with under a minute to play to give Dell Rapids a 43-39 lead. The Quarriers led 44-41 at the end of the third quarter. Dell Rapids was finally able to get their up-tempo offense working in the fourth quarter. They were able to turn defensive rebounds into quick transition points as the Quarriers went ahead 53-41 in the first four minutes of the fourth quarter. The lead grew to 60-45 before the Mustangs ended the game scoring the final five points.

Dell Rapids shot 42% from the field in the game, 24% from three-point range, and 76% from the free-throw line. They had a total of 36 team rebounds, 19 team assists, seven blocked shots while only turning the ball over six times.

Three players finished in double figures. Mason Schmidt had a team-high 16 points. Jeffrey Schuch had another double-double with 12 points, 14 rebounds as well as three assists and two blocked shots. Drew Van Regenmorter had 11 points and three rebounds. Logan Heim added eight points, 14 rebounds, and four blocked shots. Rentz tallied seven points, but dished out 11 assists.

Noah Jewett hit the 1,000 career point mark in the loss for the Mustangs.

Dell Rapids (17-4) will enter the Round of 16 as the #6 seed and will play the #11 seed Pine Ridge Thorpes on Tuesday, March 6th. The game will be played at 5:30 p.m. at the Winner Armory in Winner, SD. The game can also be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Vermillion Edges Quarrier Girls in Round of 16

DRvsVerm_GBB_3-1-18The Dell Rapids Quarrier girls basketball season came to an end in the Round of 16 on Thursday, March 1st in Tea.  The Quarriers fell to the Vermillion Tanagers 51-48.

The game was back and forth for much of the contest.  Vermillion had the hot hand to start getting out to an 8-3 lead with 4:30 to play in the first quarter.  Dell Rapids held Vermillion scoreless the rest of the quarter and went on an 8-0 run to take an 11-8 lead after the first quarter of play.  The Tanagers were able to get the lead back and led 17-14 with 3:30 left in the half.  The Quarriers again closed out the quarter on a little 6-3 run to tie the game at 20-20 at halftime.

Vermillion again got out to a fast start in the beginning of the third quarter.  They matched their largest lead of five points at 29-24 with 4:55 to play in the third.  Dell Rapids again tied the game two and a half minutes later at 30-30.  The two teams then combined to make three total free throws the rest of the quarter as Vermillion had a 32-31 lead heading into the fourth quarter.  The two teams were locked at 34-34 with 6:35 remaining in the game.  Vermillion then went ahead 40-36 with 4:50 to go.  Dell Rapids responded and tied the game at 40-40 with 4:14 to go.  The Tanagers again grabbed the lead at 44-40 with 2:52 to go.  The Quarriers then went on a 7-2 run to take a 47-46 lead after an Aspen Hansen three-point shot with 1:09 to go.  Haleigh Melstad responded with a three-point shot of her own with :55 to go to give Vermillion the lead back at 49-47.  Vermillion held a 51-48 lead after a couple of free-throws with :18 to go.  Dell Rapids called a timeout with :06.7 on the clock.  Arial Hoffman launched a three-point shot from the top of the key that just hit off the front of the rim with :02 to go and the rebound went out of bounds.  The Tanager in-bound was tipped, but Vermillion was able to fall on the ball as time expired to grab the victory.

Two players finished in double figures for Dell Rapids.  Jayda Knuppe finished with 14 points and six rebounds.  Hansen had 13 points, three rebounds, and two steals.  Emma Paul had nine points and five rebounds.  Hoffman added eight points and two rebounds.  Kaylee Hennen had three points, and Sydney Stofferahn had one point and three rebounds.

Dell Rapids has their season end with a 15-7 record.  Vermillion advances to the State A tournament in Watertown March 8th through 10th.
