Eighteen Wrestle, Twelve Place at State for Dells Youth

Eighteen Dell Rapids Youth wrestlers competed in the 2018 South Dakota Wrestling Coaches Association State Wrestling Tournament in Sioux Falls on Saturday, March 24th and Sunday, March 25th.  The state event was held at the Sioux Falls Arena.  Of the eighteen wrestlers that participated, twelve of them came home as place winners.

  • Tots 40 – Everett Bemboom finished with an 0-2 record.
  • Tots HWT – Oliver Nedved placed 2nd with a 3-1 record.
  • Bantam 47 – Stetsen Tebay finished 6th with a 2-3 record.
  • Bantam 47 – Levi Iverson finished with an 0-2 record.
  • Bantam 53 – Legend Frederick placed seventh with a 3-2 record.
  • Bantam 61 – Keanu Lee placed fifth with a 3-2 record.
  • Bantam HWT – Sawyer Nygard finished with a 1-2 record.
  • Midgets 56 – Camden Tebay finished with a 1-2 record.
  • Midgets 77 – Brechen Frederick placed fourth with a 4-2 record.
  • Midgets HWT – Tanner Baatz placed third with a 4-1 record.
  • Novice 87 – Jace Entringer finished with a 1-2 record.
  • Novice 127 – Aiden Geraets placed fifth with a 4-2 record.
  • Schoolboy 75 – John Mortrude placed fourth with a 3-2 record.
  • Schoolboy 110 – Tate Feucht finished with an 0-2 record.
  • Cadets 106 – Andrew Weiland placed seventh with a 3-2 record.
  • Cadets 138 – Trevon Cross placed sixth with a 3-3 record.
  • Cadets 145 – Brayden Gee placed fourth with a 3-2 record.
  • Juniors 160 – Gage Carr finished third with a 4-1 record.

2018DellsYouthWrestling

Ryan Stubbe, wrestling under Legends of Gold, finished with an 0-2 record.  Mason Stubbe, also under Legends of Gold, finished second with a 3-1 record.  Sage Ottoson, a wrestler for the Dell Rapids HS wrestling team, finished 0-2 in the state tournament wrestling for Chester.

Pinewood Derby Time Again in Dell Rapids

2018PinewoodDerbyThe Dell Rapids Boy Scouts Pack 53 held their annual Pinewood Derby race on Saturday, March 24th, at the Dell Rapids Elementary School.  Den members from the Lions, Tigers, Wolves, Bears, and Webelos once again spent time creating their Pinewood Derby cards for the big race.  Family members were also once again able to enter a race with the specially created cars in the open class division.  The Boy Scouts again invited the Girl Scouts to build cars and race as part of the event on Saturday.

Four places were given to the Boy Scout division and three places were given to the Girl Scouts.  Best of show awards were also given to a car from each den and the Girl Scout division.  There was also an overall best of show winner.

The top three Boy Scout place winners advanced to race their cars at the Scout-O-Rama in Sioux Falls.

Behr Peckenpaugh placed first, Dylan Aker was second, Orran O’Meara placed third, and Liam Zellmer was fourth in the Boy Scout division.

Best of Show winners were Blake Lebahn for the Tigers, Dylan Berg for the Bears, Noah Hubers for the Wolves, Gavin Jones for the Lions, Zander Lacey for Weblos 1, and Noah Larson for Weblos 2.  The overall Best of Show winner was Henry Anderson.

The Dell Rapids Lions Club officiated the event as well as voted for the Best of Show winners.

Quarrier Tracksters Compete at Dan Lennon Invite

NewQuarrierLogoA few of the Dell Rapids Quarrier track members traveled to Vermillion for the Dan Lennon Invite on Monday, March 19th.  Four the participants placed in the top 10 of their Class A events.

Shaylee Hoff placed 5th in the 400m Dash with a time of 1:04.76.  Mason Schmidt also placed 5th in the High Jump with a leap of 6’4″.  Ryker Pedde also participated in the High Jump and finished 9th with a jump of 6’0″.  Josh Heinemann placed 6th in the Triple Jump with a jump of 39’1″.  Sydney Stofferahn had a 15th place finish in the shot put with a throw of 32’11.75″.  Andrew Hegge also ran in the meet with a 7.76 time in the 60m Dash.

The Quarriers will officially start their season at the SDSU Relays in Bro0kings on Monday, April 2nd.

Eleven Compete, Two Champions for Dells Youth Wrestling

Eleven Dell Rapids Youth Wrestling wrestlers competed at the Black Hills & AAU Folkstyle National Wrestling Tournament on Friday, March 16th and Saturday, March 17th.  Two of those wrestlers came home champions, and nine of the eleven placed in the tournament.

Stetsen Tebay placed fourth in the Tot 45 division with a 5-2 record.

Camden Tebay was the champion for the Bantam 55 division with a record of 5-0.

Tate Feucht placed seventh in the Novice 112 division with a 1-2 record.

Kain Burggraff also had a seventh place finish in the Novice 120 division with a 1-2 record.

Aiden Geraets placed sixth in the Novice 120 division with a 1-3 record.

Sage Ottoson, wrestling under Chester, finished with an 1-2 record in the Schoolboy 120 division.

Andrew Weiland was a champion of the High School Boys 98/106 division.  He defeated the other two wrestlers in his division to take the top spot.

Trevon Cross was seventh in the High School Boys 132 division with a record of 3-2.

Zach McKee, wrestling for Legends of Gold, finished fifth in the High School Boys 132 division with a record of 4-2.

Gage Carr went 0-2 in the High School Boys 160 division.

Mitchell Klinkenborg was eighth in the High School Boys 195 division with a record of 2-3 for the weekend.

Two other wrestlers from Dell Rapids wrestled for Legends of Gold.  Ryan Stubbe placed sixth in the Midget 70 division with a 3-3 record.  Mason Stubbe placed second in the Novice 90 division with a record of 4-1.

School Board Finalizes Calendar and Sets Election Date

NewDRLogoThe Dell Rapids School Board held their latest regular meeting on Monday, March 12th.  Among other items discussed, the board finalized the school calendar for the remainder of this year as well as set the date for the school board election.

The Dell Rapids school district has had only one full day of school missed due to the weather this year.

Superintendent Dr. Summer Schultz said, “You have two choices really…make up the day with staff and students, or make up the day with just staff.”

After discussion the board voted to leave the last day of school for students as Wednesday, May 23rd.  The missed day will be made up by the staff on Friday, May 25th as an in-service day.  This was also the recommendation from Dr. Schultz.

The school board also set the school board election for Tuesday, April 10th.  All precincts will be voting at the Dell Rapids Lutheran Church.  The public will be voting on two school board openings.  The City of Dell Rapids did not have to hold an election this year as all open city council ward spots only had one candidate petition filed per ward.

Zane Schumaker, a Dell Rapids graduate and junior at Mount Marty, was one of 177 National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Division II men’s basketball student-athletes named to the 2018 Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athletes list for the 2017-2018 season.

Schumaker was one of two students from Mount Marty named to the list and the only student from South Dakota to make the list.

In order to be nominated by an institution’s head coach or sports information director, a student-athlete must maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale and must have achieved a junior academic status to qualify for this honor.

Schumaker led the Lancers in assists and steals during this past season.

Dell Rapids Students Win Awards

NewDRLogoSeveral Dell Rapids High School students received awards or accolades during the first half of the month of March.

Amanda Tomes and Bergan Weiland both were recognized by NCWIT.  Tomes won an NCWIT Award for Aspirations in Computing for the North and South Dakota Region.  Weiland was an honorable mention for the same award.

Samantha Verver recently placed third in the Paul Witherington Prose Contest at South Dakota State University for her short story entry, “Phoenix & Grace”.

Evan Schmidt is a finalist in the South Dakota Student Journalist of the Year competition.  The South Dakota High School Activities Association will announce the specific awards at a convention on March 28th.

Casey Machmiller placed 1oth and Kyle Steineke placed 16th in the FFA Ag Mechanics Career Development Event recently held in Watertown.  The Ag Machanics team finished fourth with the other two members being Kenyon Shellum and Riley Anderson.

 

Carol Campbell

campbell picCarol Campbell, 100, of Schaumburg, formerly of Trent, passed away on Sunday, March 11, 2018. Her funeral service was at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday March 17, 2018 at Ahlgrim & Sons Funeral & Cremation Services in Schaumburg, IL. Visitation was two hours prior to the start of the service. Private graveside services will be held at Riverview Cemetery, rural Dell Rapids under the direction of Kahler Funeral Home, Dell Rapids.

Carol was born November 10, 1917 in Trent, SD, daughter of Otto and Carrie (Nelson) Lund. She is preceded in death by her husband, Wayne, her parents and two children (Gary and Christy).

She is survived by her daughter, Carolyn (Tom) Benson of Barrington, IL,  two grandsons, Dan and Randy, and six great grandchildren, Christian, Mason, Keira, Bailey, Carter, and Charley.

Aleida Groos

groos picAleida Groos, 91, of Colton passed away on Wednesday, March 14, 2018 at her home. Her Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 20, 2018 in St. Mary Catholic Church. Visitation with the family present will be from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. on Monday, March 19, 2018 at Kahler Funeral Home. A Christian Wake Service will begin at 7:00 p.m.

Aleida was born on September 30, 1926 at Alvord, Iowa to Henry and Martina (Boon) Busser. She attended Lawndale grade school, rural Colton. She worked for several families in the community. Later she worked in Sioux Falls at Dakota Laundry for many years. She married Bill Groos of Colman on April 18, 1959 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Sioux Falls. They moved to Rapid City for several years until they moved back to Sioux Falls in 1968. They had one son, Paul, in June of 1962. They moved back to Colton in 1972. Bill passed away in April of 1979.

Those left to cherish her memory are her son, Paul of Colton; her two brothers, Bill (Sue) Busser of Byron, IL and Neal (Betty) Busser of Colton and her many nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her brother, Arie (Arla) Busser who passed away in 1972.

 

Six Quarriers Nab All-Conference Honors

Emma Paul (Jr) was a Second Team All-Conference selection.  Jayda Knuppe (Jr) was a Third Team All-Conference selection, and Arial Hoffman (Sr) was an Honorable Mention.

Jeffrey Schuch (Sr) was named the the All-Conference First Team.  Carson Rentz (Sr) and Mason Schmidt (Sr) were Third Team All-Conference selections.
