Quarrier Girls Get Come-from-Behind Win over EPJ, Paul Hits 1,000

The Dell Rapids Quarrier girls had to come from behind to earn a 64-54 win over the Elk Point-Jefferson Huskies on Saturday, January 19th at Dell Rapids High School.

Dell Rapids scored the first two points of the game, but Elk Point-Jefferson went on a 9-0 run to take a 9-2 lead.  The Huskies pushed the lead to nine points by the end of the first quarter at 15-6.  The Quarriers got the offense going in the second quarter as they scored 19 second quarter points, but the Huskies scores 17 points themselves and held a 32-25 lead at halftime.

The Quarrier defense the locked down the Huskie offense in the second half.  Elk Point-Jefferson was held to just nine points in the third quarter and 13 points in the fourth quarter.  Dell Rapids countered with 17 points in the third quarter and erased the seven-point halftime deficit.  The Quarriers led 42-41 heading into the final quarter.  Dell Rapids continued to roll in the fourth quarter scoring 22 points for the 10-point win.

Four players scored in double figures for Dell Rapids.  Jayda Knuppe had a game-high 18 points.  Aspen Hansen finished with 17 points.  Emma Paul ended the game with 16 points, which included her reaching the 1,000-point mark for her career, and Ravyn Hoffman tallied 10 points.  Elk Point-Jefferson was led by Lily Kempf with 14 points.

Dell Rapids (5-5) will travel to Vermillion on Thursday, January 24th.  The Quarriers will play a girls and boys double-header against the Tanagers.

Quarrier Wrestling 3rd at Dak XII Tourney

NewQuarrierLogoThe Dell Rapids Quarrier wrestling team continued their great week with a 3rd place finish at the Dak XII Conference Tournament in Vermillion on Saturday, January 19th.  Dell Rapids finished with a total of 113.5 team points.  Canton won the team title with 258.5 points, and Madison was second with 166.0 points.

The Quarriers had two wrestlers come home as conference champions.  Jacob Vogel won the 113-pound weight class, and Gage Carr won the 160-pound weight class.  Andrew Weiland, Canyon Lowman, and Aiden Moore all placed third in their respective weight class.  Max Lamer had a fourth place finish.

Dell Rapids will travel to Hartford/West Central High School for their next Dak XII meet on Tuesday, January 22nd.

Weather Delayed DVC Semifinals Unkind to Cardinals

DRSM LogoAfter having the semifinals of the Dakota Valley Conference tournament delayed by a day, the Dell Rapids St May Cardinal boys fell to the Elkton-Lake Benton Elks on Satuday, January 19th at Deubrook High School in White.

The Cardinals opened the game on fire jumping out to an 11-2 lead in the first two minutes.  The Elks responded with a 7-0 run to close the gap to 11-9.  St Mary responded with an 11-3 spurt to close out the quarter.  The Cardinals led 22-12 after the first quarter.  St Mary pushed their lead to 15 points at 33-18 with 4:30 to play in the second quarter.  The Elks then went on a 19-6 run the remainder of the quarter to close the gap to 39-37 by halftime.

Elkton-Lake Benton tied the game with 6:30 to go in the third quarter at 41-41.  The two teams traded baskets through much of the third quarter, but the Elks took a five-point lead at 54-49 with just over a minute to play in the third quarter.  Elkton-Lake Benton held that five-point lead at the end of the quarter at 56-51.  The Elks scored the first six points of the fourth quarter to extend their lead to 62-51 with 6:15 to play in the game.  The Elks held a double-digit lead for most of the quarter, but the Cardinals cut the lead down to two points at 71-69 with 1:15 to play.  The Elks, however, put the game away at the free throw line for the win.

Max Herber led the team with 26 points and 10 rebounds.  Weston Geraets finished with 14 points.  Elkton-Lake Benton was led by Matthew Nibbe with 16 points and Aiden Erickson with 15 points.

St Mary (8-2) will play in the 3rd/4th place game on Monday, January 21st in Arlington.  The Cardinals will play Colman-Egan with a 6:00 p.m. tipoff.

Roger L. Nelson

nelson picMass of Christian Burial for Roger Nelson is at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, January 21, 2019 in St. Mary Catholic Church, Dell Rapids with Fr. John Lantsberger as the celebrant. Interment is in the St. Mary Cemetery, Dell Rapids. Roger and Darlene’s eight children will serve as Roger’s casketbearers. Visitation with the family present is on Sunday, January 20, 2019 at Kahler Funeral Home from 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. The Christian Wake Service is at 4:00 p.m. and the Catholic Daughters Rosary will follow.

Roger was born on the family farm in Dell Rapids, on October 8, 1928. The fourth of six children, he was the second son of David and Emma (Christensen) Nelson. He attended the Nelson Country School through eighth grade and graduated from Dell Rapids High School in 1946. He married Darlene Hansen on June 16, 1955 and they have eight children.

Family, Farm and Stories were the anchors of his life. Nothing was as important as his family. He farmed for almost his entire life, and he had a story for everyone. He loved to tell “Ole and Lena” jokes, every event had a story, and every story led to another.

Roger also pitched for the Dell Rapids Rox, the local amateur baseball team. He threw for the team that played in the 1951 state tournament, and he taught every one of his kids to play catch early.

He passed away on January 16, at home, with his family around him.

He is survived by his wife of nearly 64 years, Darlene (Hansen) Nelson, children Jeff (Crawfordsville, IN), Dean (Mary – Apple Valley, MN), children Colin, Christian, Katelyn; Scott (Wendy – Dell Rapids, SD), children Emma, Gabe; Brad (Jonie – Omaha, NE), children David (Kayla), Chris, Ashleigh; Bette Paulsen (Marc – Sioux Falls, SD), children Danny Gustafson, Chelsea Gustafson (Matt) Sorenson; John (Annette – Littleton, CO), child Zach; Phyllis (Carl Jackson – Valparaiso, IN); Matt (Crooks SD), children, Mikayla, Meghan, Dylan. Sister: Loraine Ollis (Hull, GA); brother-in-law Tom Van Duzee (Gum Springs, VA); many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother David, sisters Dorothy Eriksen, Lucille Smith and Rosella Van Duzee.

First Quarter Sets Tone for Quarrier Win

Staring the game on a 10-0 run was enough for the Dell Rapids Quarriers to get a Dak XII Conference win over the Madison Bulldogs on Thursday, January 17th in Madison.  Dell Rapids held on to beat the Quarriers 68-65.

Dell Rapids started the game on the 10-0 run and led by as many as 15 points in the first quarter.  Madison cut the lead to single digits by the end of the first quarter at 23-16.  The Bulldogs cut into the lead a little more in the second quarter, and Dell Rapids led by just five points at a score of 36-31.  The two teams played even basketball much of the second half as Dell Rapids never let go of the lead.  The Quarriers led 52-45 heading into the fourth quarter.  Even though Madison outscored Dell Rapids 20-16 in the final quarter, Dell Rapids held on for the win.

The Quarriers finished the game shooting 49% (27-55) from the field, 26% (5-19) from three-point area, and 47% (9-19) from the free-throw line.  Madison was 41% (26-63) from the field, 50% (10-20) from three-point area, and 60% (3-5) from the free-throw line.  The Quarriers out-rebounded Madison 39-31 in the game.  Dell Rapids also had a 14 turnovers, nine team assists, and five steals.

All five starters for Dell Rapids finished in double figures.  Colin Rentz had 17 points, nine rebounds, four assists, and two steals.  Logan Ellingson had 16 points and two steals.  Logan Heim finished with 12 points and 15 rebounds.  Drew Van Regenmorter tallied 12 points, seven rebounds, and three assists.  Connor Rentz added 11 points and two assists.

Dell Rapids (5-3) will host another Dax XII opponent on Saturday, January 19th.  The Quarriers will host Elk Point-Jefferson as part of a girls and boys double-header.  Both games can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Quarrier Wrestling Earns Four Wins During Week

The Dell Rapids Quarrier wrestling team picked up for dual wins during the week.  The Quarriers traveled to Dakota Valley High School on Tuesday, January 15th and hosted a triangular on Thursday, January 17th.

On Tuesday Dell Rapids earned a 60-18 win over Dakota Valley and a 54-21 win over Elk Point-Jefferson.  On Thursday, the Quarriers got a 51-28 win over Sioux Falls O’Gorman and 49-18 win over Garretson.

Dell Rapids will travel to Vermillion on Saturday, January 19th for the Dak XII Conference Tournament.

Cardinal Girls End Skid at DVC Tourney

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal girls ended a six-game skid with a 45-28 win in the consolation round of the Dakota Valley Conference tournament on Thursday, January 17th.  The Cardinals defeated the Elkton-Lake Benton Elks at Deubrook High School in White.

The Cardinals started the game on a 10-0 run and led the entire way.  St Mary led 12-3 after the first quarter.  That lead grew to 11 points by halftime at 27-16.  The Cardinal defense became more stingy in the second.  St Mary held the Elks to just nine third quarter points and three fourth quarter points.

The Cardinals (4-7) will play Lake Preston for fifth place on Saturday, January 19th at 2:30 p.m. at Deubrook High School in White.

Twelve Groups Earn Academic Achievement Awards in Dell Rapids

sdhsaaLogoEight groups from Dell Rapids St Mary and four from Dell Rapids earned Academic Achievement Team Awards from the South Dakota High School Activities Association for the 2018-2019 fall season.

The team awards are given to varsity athletic teams and fine arts groups for their academic excellence.  To receive the award, the group much have a combined grade point average of 3.0 or higher.

The Football team, All-State Chorus group, Oral Interpretation group, Boys Cross Country team, Girls Cross Country team, Football Cheerleaders, Competitive Cheer team, and the Volleyball team all earned the honor from Dell Rapids St Mary High School.

The Girls Cross Country team, Boys Golf team, Football team, and Boys Cross Country team earned the honor from Dell Rapids High School.

NewDRLogoThe undefeated West Central Trojans came into Dell Rapids and defeated the Quarriers 54-41 on Tuesday, January 15th in a big Region 3A and Dak XII match-up.

Dell Rapids opened up the game with an 8-0 run, but the Trojans countered with a 14-0 run to close out the first quarter and take a 14-8 lead.  West Central continued the run scoring the first five points of the second quarter to push the lead to 19-8.  The lead grew to 12 points by halftime at 32-20.

Dell Rapids cut the lead to five points in the third quarter after a 9-2 run.  West Central led 34-29 with just under 4:00 to play in the quarter.  West Central again answered with an 8-3 spurt of their own to take a 42-33 lead into the fourth quarter.  The Trojans went on an 8-2 run to start the fourth quarter to extend their lead to 15 points, the largest of the night.

The Quarriers (4-5) will play Sioux Valley in Volga on Friday, January 18th, and then will host Elk Point-Jefferson on Saturday, January 19th in a girls and boys double header.

Cardinal Boys Advance to DVC Semifinals after Win

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal boys advanced to the semifinal round of the Dakota Valley Conference tournament after an 83-53 win over the Estelline/Hendricks Redhawks on Tuesday, January 15th at Elkton High School.

The #1 seeded Cardinals found themselves in a tight battle in the first half with the Redhawks.  The two offenses had things rolling right away in the first quarter.  St Mary was able to give themselves a nine-point lead at the first quarter break of 26-17.  The Redhawks kept pace with St Mary in the second quarter and trailed by just 10 points by a score of 44-34 at halftime.

St Mary’s defense locked down on the Redhawks in the second half.  Estelline/Hendricks was only able to score 10 points in the third quarter as the Cardinals scored 22 to push the lead to 66-44.  The Cardinals outscored the Redhawks 17-9 in the final quarter for the win.

Three players finished in double figures for St Mary.  Connor Libis finished with 25 points, four assists, and two steals.  Weston Geraets had 15 points, 10 rebound, and three blocked shots.  Sam Palmer added 11 points and three blocked shots.

The Cardinals (8-1) will play at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, January 18th in Elkton.  The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.
