West Central Holds off Madison Rally

The West Central Trojans held off a third quarter rally by the Madison Bulldogs and won their final home game of the season on Friday, October 9th.  The Trojans defeated the Bulldogs 33-14.

The first half of the game belonged to the Trojans.  West Central scored 17 straight points in the first two quarters.  Derek Eidsness made a 33-yard field goal with 2:17 to play in the first quarter for a 3-0 lead.  The first touchdown came on a four-yard run by Justin Zirpel with 7:15 to play in the second quarter.  Ryan Healy added a four-yard touchdown run of his own with 5:55 to play in the half.  West Central led 17-0 at halftime.

Madison put together a rally in the third quarter.  Nate Ricke connected with Carter Bergheim on a 35-yard touchdown pass with 9:19 to play in the third quarter.  Ricke then had a five-yard touchdown run with 7:24 to go in the quarter to pull the Bulldogs within three points at 17-14.  The score remained 17-14 heading into the fourth quarter.

Eidsness led the Trojans in the fourth quarter to keep them in front.  Eidsness made field goals of 31 yards, 33 yards, and 35 yards all in the fourth quarter to give the Trojans a 26-14 lead.  Eidsness then put the game out of reach when he intercepted a pass by Ricke and returned it 30 yards for a touchdown with 1:28 to play in the game.

West Central finished the game with 301 yards of total offense, 253 rushing yards and 48 passing yards.  Madison was held to just 168 yards of offense, 116 rushing yards and 52 passing yards.  The Trojans also had three interceptions and two fumble recoveries in the game.

Zirpel was 2-4 passing for 48 yards and an interception.  Seth Gabbert had a catch for 30 yards, and Braden Dierickx had a catch for 18 yards.  Healy finished with 26 carries for 126 yards and a touchdown.  Zirpel had 28 carries for 83 yards and a touchdown.  Eidsness had seven rushes for 35 yards.  Logan Maras had six tackles in the game.  Healy and Eidsness both had four tackles.  Jacob Krempges had two interceptions.

West Central (4-3) will travel to Dell Rapids on Friday, October 16th.

Estelline/Hendricks Beats Cardinals in Straight Sets

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals traveled to Estelline to play the Estelline/Hendricks Redhawks on Thursday, October 8th.  Estelline/Hendricks took the match in straight sets.

The Redhawks opened up the first set with a 7-0 run and never looked back.  The lead grew to 17-7 and Estelline/Hendricks won the first set 25-12.

The second set went back and forth with neither team having a lead bigger than two points through the midway point of the game.  After the set was tied 18-18, Esetlline/Hendricks went ahead 21-18.  The Cardinals pulled within a point at 21-20, but the Redhawks held off the Cardinals for the 25-22 win.

The two teams were tied 4-4 and 6-6 to start the third set, with the Cardinals taking a short 7-6 lead.  Estelline/Hendricks then went on a 10-0 run for a 16-7 advantage.  The Redhawks won the set 25-14 to take the match.

Courtney Brown had three ace serves and four kills.  Macie Brown had five digs and an ace.  Maya Heinitz finished with eight digs, two kills, and a block.  Ella Heinitz had seven digs, three set assists and an ace serve.

St Mary (7-4) are scheduled to host Castlewood on Monday, October 12th and Centerville on Tuesday, October 13th.  The matches, if played, will be seen on Big Sioux Media.

West Central Races at Dak-12 Meet

The West Central Trojan cross country team ran in the Dak-12 Conference meet on Thursday, October 8th.  The conference meet was held in Madison this year.

The girls team finished fifth with a total score of 91 points.  Sioux Falls Christian won the team conference title with 16 points.  Lennox was second with 49 points, and Tea Area was third with 54 points.

Abbie Cain had a 23rd place finish with a time of 23:17.17.  Drew Caffrey was 24th just behind Cain with a time of 23:28.38.  Sayda Rolfson finished 28th with a time of 23:57.62.  Paige Pilker was 30th in 24:09.99.  Kaylyn Kunz was 31st at 24:18.28.

The boys team placed seventh with 108 points.  Sioux Falls Christian also won the boys title with 10 points.  Vermillion was second at 42 points, and Lennox was third at 68 points.

Jonathon Roth had a 23rd place finish with a time of 19:37.28.  Ben Strunk was 25th at 19:42.80.  Justin Schumacher had a 33rd place finish with a time of 20:08.94.  Jacob Peterson was 39th at 21:00.06.  Blake Stark was 45th with a time of 22:32.84.

The Trojans will be at the Region 2A meet on Thursday, October 15th in Sioux Falls.

Peters and Hargreaves Run in Conference Meet

Brie Peters, Nate Hargreaves, and the Tri-Valley Mustang cross country team ran in the Dak-12 Conference meet on Thursday, October 8th in Madison.

Peters had a 14th place finish in the race with a time of 22:14.07.  Hargreaves had an 11th place finish in the varsity race with a time of 18:18.57.

For the girls JV team, Zoey Dissing placed fourth with a time of 18:30.20.  Savanna King placed 19th with a time of 20:46.74.  On the JV boys team, Matthew Mares was 24th in a time of 16:47.63.  Teagin Gacke was 27th at 17:03.95.  Camden Raastad placed 46th with a time of 18:57.31

This was the final meet before the Region 2A race.  Regions will be held on Thursday, October 15th in Sioux Falls.

Mustangs End Skid in Elk Point

The Tri-Valley Mustang volleyball team was able to end a five-match losing streak on Thursday, October 8th.  Tri-Valley traveled to Elk Point to play the Elk Point-Jefferson Huskies.  The Mustangs came home with a 3-1 match victory.

The entire match was close between the two teams.  The Huskies took the first set by a score of 27-25.  Tri-Valley then took the next three sets of the match.  The Mustangs won the second set 25-17 and then won sets three and four by the same score of 25-22.

Jessica Masgai had a team-high 13 kills.  Blayne Gacke finished with 10 kills.  Gacke also led the team in digs with 20.  Hannah West finished with 11 digs.  Abbie Weinacht had three blocks, while Tabor Teel had two.  Grace Schildhauer finished with 12 set assists.  Teel also finished with two ace serves.

Tri-Valley (6-7) will travel to Lennox on Monday, October 12th, and then to Sioux Falls Christian on Tuesday, October 13th.

Tattered Runway Welcomed with Chamber Ribbon Cutting

Tattered Runway, along with the Dell Rapids Chamber of Commerce, held a ribbon cutting ceremony on Saturday, October 3rd, in front of the new Tattered Runway store.

Tattered Runway is a boutique store in Dell Rapids that gives the community women’s fashion and fun ideas.  They have many items in their store that include women’s clothing from small to 3XL, accessories, jewelry, CBD products, and gift item.s  Store hours are Thursdays from 10 am to 5 pm, Fridays from 10 am to 6 pm, and Saturdays from 9 am to 2 pm.  The store is located at 411 E 4th St in downtown Dell Rapids.

Cardinal Cross Country Teams Run at DVC Meet

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal girls and boys cross country teams ran at the Dakota Valley Conference meet on Wednesday, October 7th.  The meet was held at De Smet.

The Cardinal girls team placed sixth with a total of 70 points.  Estelline/Hendricks placed first with 20 points.  De Smet was second with 22 points, and Colman-Egan placed third with 24 points.

Lucy Vargas placed 19th with a time of 23:54.15.  Addy Gilbert finished 20th with a time of 23:58.45.  Seirra Klein placed 35th with a time of 26:33.29.

The boys team placed third with 21 points.  Elkton-Lake Benton took the DVC title from St Mary with 16 points.  Estelline/Hendricks was second with 18 points.

Jacob Vogel placed second individually with a time of 17:29.66.  Thomas Eining was ninth with a time of 19:50.13.  Seth Roemen placed 10th at 19:53.38.  Noah Reiff was 17th in a time of 20:32.68.  Owen Vargas was 29th with a time of 22:17.27.

St Mary will host the Region 2B Cross Country meet on Wednesday, October 14th.

Three Senior Dell Rapids Golfers End Career at State

The three seniors on the 2020 Dell Rapids Quarrier boys golf team were able to end their high school golf career at the 2020 South Dakota Class A Boys Golf State Tournament on Monday, October 5th and Tuesday, October 6th.

The weather and course couldn’t have been any better for the Lucas Berg, Zach McKee, and Brady Larson to play in their final tournament as a Dell Rapids Quarrier.

Berg ended his tournament with a 33rd place finish with a first round score of 80 and a second round of 96 for a two-day total of 176.

McKee had a 51st place finish in the two-day tournament.  He shot a 97 on the first day and an 88 on the second day for a total of 185.

Larson placed 72nd at state.  Larson had an opening day round of 95 and a second day of 101 for a total of 196.

Chester Hands Tri-Valley Home Loss

The Tri-Valley Mustangs lost to a tough Chester Flyers team on Tuesday, October 6th at home.  The Flyers took the match in straight sets.

Chester got on a roll in the first set of the match and took the win 25-11.  The second set was much closer, but the Flyers took a 2-0 lead with a 25-22 win in the second set.  The Flyers continued the momentum and won the third set 25-14.

Kaitlyn Mohnen finished the night with eight digs and one ace serve.  Hannah West had five digs.  Abbie Weinacht had four solo and seven assisted blocks, four kills, and three ace serves.  Blayne Gacke had a team-high six kills.  Jessica Masgai had 10 assisted blocks and two solo blocks.  Grace Schildhauer finished with 12 set assists, and Brookelyn Stieben added six set assists.

Tri-Valley (5-7) will look to get back into the win column when they travel to Elk Point to play the Elk Point-Jefferson Huskies on Thursday, October 8th.

Tri-Valley Cross Country Runs Well at Howard

The Tri-Valley Mustang cross country team had a great day in Howard on Monday, October 5th.  The Mustangs participated in the Howard Invitational.

Both Brie Peters and Nate Hargreaves had great days.  Peters and Hargreaves both had 2nd place finishes in the varsity race.

The Mustang JV girls team also had a great day.  The team placed first and all four runners had top 20 finishes.  Zoey Dissing won the race.  Savanna King was 2nd.  Gwen Peters placed eighth, and Elizabeth Dahl was 15th.

The Mustangs will be at the Dak-12 Conference meet on Thursday, October 8th in Madison for their next meet.
