The Tri-Valley Maroon 16U baseball team finished fourth at the 2023 South Dakota VFW State A Tournament in Beresford. The tournament was held Friday, August 4th through Sunday, August 6th.
Tri-Valley Maroon 13, Dakota Valley 9
In the opening round on Friday, Tri-Valley used two big innings to earn a 13-9 win over Dakota Valley. Tri-Valley scored seven times in the top of the first inning. Dakota Valley got two runs back in the bottom of the inning and then another one in the bottom of the third. Tri-Valley scored five times in the top of the third and led 12-3 after three innings. After Tri-Valley scored one more run in the top of the fourth, Dakota Valley had their own five-run inning to make the score 13-8. Dakota Valley got just one more run in the bottom of the sixth.
Carter Sorenson finished with three hits and three RBIs. Brody Dybvig and Kaiden Bernards each had a hit and an RBI. Hunter Foster, Mason Hemme, and Parker Hemme all finished with one hit each. Cyrus Kirstein added an RBI. Tristen Bunde pitched 1 2/3 innings and allowed five runs, none of them earned, on three hits and three walks with two strikeouts. Denton Bicknase pitched 1 2/3 innings and allowed an earned run on three hits and two walks. Dybvig pitched 1 2/3 innings and struck out two batters.
Dell Rapids 10, Tri-Valley Maroon 8
A five-run rally by Dell Rapids in the bottom of the sixth gave them a come-from-behind win on Saturday. Each team scored a run in the first inning. Tri-Valley got single runs in both the third and fourth innings. Dell Rapids scored two times each in the third and fourth innings. After four innings of play, Dell Rapids led 5-3. Tri-Valley then took the lead with three runs in the top of the fifth. They would get two more runs in the top of the sixth for an 8-5 lead. Dell Rapids, however, would get five runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Gage Egger had a hit and three RBIs. Bunde finished with a home run and an RBI. Dybvig had a single and an RBI. Sorenson added a double. Bernards had a single. Dybvig pitched five innings and allowed six runs, four earned, on five hits and three walks with nine strikeouts. Sorenson pitched one inning and allowed four earned runs on five hits and a walk with a strikeout.
Volga 6, Tri-Valley Maroon 1
Tri-Valley took a 1-0 lead after a run in the top of the first inning on Sunday. Volga, however, would score the next six runs of the game. They got a run in the second, two in the third, and three in the fifth.
Sorenson finished with three hits. Dybvig had two hits and an RBI. Kirstein, Bunde, and Foster each had a hit. Bicknase pitched three innings and allowed three runs, one earned, on three hits and three walks with two strikeouts. Sorenson pitched three innings and allowed three earned runs on six hits and a walk with six strikeouts.
Tri-Valley Maroon finished their season with a 10-10 overall record.
