Cardinal Boys End Skid

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal boys basketball team ended a two-game skid with a win over the Elkton-Lake Benton Elks on Monday, February 17th at home.  The Cardinals earned a hard-fought 72-60.

The game was close through three quarters before the Cardinals pulled away late in the game.  St Mary started with a 7-2 lead with 5:20 to play in the first quarter.  The Elks closed out the quarter on a 17-9 run for a 19-16 lead by the end of the quarter.  Elkton-Lake Benton kept that three point lead heading into halftime at 35-32.

The Cardinals were able to regain the lead in the third quarter as they outscored the Elks 19-14 to lead 51-49 heading into the fourth quarter.  St Mary was then able to pull away by holding the Elks to just nine fourth-quarter points.

St Mary shot the ball well all night shooting 56% (28-50) from the field, 38% (5-13) from three-point area, and 61% (11-18) from the free-throw line.  Connor Libis finished with 37 points and three steals.  Max Herber had 15 points and four rebounds.  Sam Palmer added five points and seven rebounds.  Connor Kangas also had five points.  Weston Geraets had four points, seven rebounds, and four assists.  Cole Welbig had a team-high seven assists.

The Cardinals (13-4) will travel to Howard on Thursday, February 20th for a boys and girls double-header.  Both games can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Libis Hits Milestone, but Cardinals Fall to Beavers

Junior Connor Libis hit a milestone few have reached in their high school basketball career on Saturday, February 15th. Libis made his 2,000th point in the game against the Hanson Beavers at the DWU/Culvers Classic in Mitchell, but the Beavers took the game by a score of 78-52.  Libis made his 2,000th point from the free-throw line with 1:55 to play in the second quarter.

In a battle of the top two teams in Region 4B, the first quarter played out as most people expected the entire game would.  Hanson held a slim two point advantage after the quarter at 15-13.  The Beavers took control of the game in the second quarter, and the Cardinals couldn’t recover.  Hanson outscored St Mary 20-7 in the quarter and led 35-20 at halftime.  The Beavers continued to pull away in the second half.  They extended the lead to 57-37 by the end of the third quarter and outscored the Cardinals 21-15 in the final quarter.

St Mary finished the game shooting 37% (19-51) from the field, just 15% (2-13) from three-point area, and 75% (12-16) from the free-throw line.  Libis finished with a team-high 19 points and also had five rebounds.  John Pica had eight points and two rebounds.  Max Herber and Weston Geraets both had six points each.

St Mary (12-4) will be in Howard on Thursday, February 20th as part of a girls and boys double header.  The games can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

St Mary Girls Drop Close Battle to Arlington

In the second meeting of the year between the Arlington and Dell Rapids St Mary girls basketball teams, Arlington again got the best of St Mary.  Arlington beat St Mary by a score of 45-41 on Friday, February 14th.

Arlington got the early lead at 7-4, but St Mary went on an 11-0 run to take a 15-7 and ended the first quarter leading 17-11.  Arlington held St Mary to just three points in the second quarter and was able to get the game tied at 20-20 heading into halftime.  St Mary regained the lead in the third quarter and led by four points heading into the final quarter at 34-30.  Neither team scored until 4:20 to go in them game when Arlington hit a three-point shot to pull within a point at 34-33.  Arlington took the lead at 37-36 with 1:11 to go and made eight free-throws down the stretch to hold on for the victory.

St Mary shot just 27% (12-44) from the field, 26% (5-19) from three-point area, and 67% (12-18) from the free-throw line.  St Mary also had 25 team rebounds and eight steals.

Ella Heinitz led the team with 14 points, six rebounds, three steals, and two assists.  Karlie Klein added 12 points, four rebounds, and three steals.  Courtney Brown and Ella Griffin both had six points each.  Brown and Sydney Klein both had seven rebounds.

St Mary (9-9) will play the Elkton-Lake Benton Elks on Tuesday, February 18th in their final home game of the regular season.

Arlington’s Second Half Surge Ends St Mary’s Streak

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal boys basketball team took a six-game winning streak into a rematch with the Arlington Cardinals on Thursday, February 13th.  Arlington avenged a loss to St Mary earlier in the season with a 69-59 win ending the winning streak for St Mary.

The game went back and forth through the first three quarters.  St Mary struck first hitting the first two three-point shots of the game for an early lead.  They remained in front holding a 14-9 lead before Arlington ended the quarter on an 8-0 run to lead 17-14 after the first quarter.  Arlington continued the run by scoring the first two points of the second quarter to extend their lead to 21-14.  St Mary then clamped down on defense and held Arlington to just eight more second quarter points while the offense put up 19 to take a 33-29 lead at halftime.

Arlington tied the game early in the third quarter at 33-33 and then again at 35-35.  With the game tied at 37-37, Arlington went on a 10-3 run the remainder of the third quarter to lead 47-40 heading into the fourth quarter.  St Mary got within five points at 53-48 and 56-51, but could not get any closer as Arlington had an answer each time St Mary got close.

St Mary shot 40% (22-55) from the field in the game, 24% (5-21) from three-point area, and 56% (10-18) from the free-throw line.  They pulled down a total of 30 rebounds and had a total of seven steals.

Connor Libis had a game-high 32 points with three rebounds and two assists.  Max Herber had 10 points and six rebounds.  Sam Palmer finished with eight points and two blocked shots.  West Geraets tallied four points, nine rebounds, and four assists, while Colin Winberg had four points and eight rebounds.

St Mary (12-3) will play Hanson at the DWU/Culver’s Classic in Mitchell on Saturday, February 15th at 4:30 p.m.  The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Cardinal Boys Win Sixth in a Row

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal boys won their sixth straight game on Saturday, February 8th.  The Cardinals hosted the Deubrook Area Dolphins and came away with a 61-34 win.

The Cardinals got on a roll after a close first quarter.  St Mary led by just six points at 19-13 heading into the second quarter.  The Cardinals then dominated the second quarter with some high-flying dunks, tenacious defense, and sharp shooting to outscore the Dolphins 28-6 for a 47-19 halftime lead.  That was more than enough for the Cardinals as they cruised through the second half for the win.

St Mary finished the game shooting 40% (24-60) from the field, 29% (4-14) from three-point area, and 75% (9-12) from the free-throw line.  They had 30 team rebounds and 12 steals.

Connor Libis had a team-high 21 points along with four steals and three rebounds.  Sam Palmer finished with 11 points and two rebounds.  Cole Welbig had 11 points, four rebounds, and two steals.  Max Herber had six points and six rebounds, and Weston Geraets had four points, seven rebounds, and five steals.

The Cardinals (12-2) will have a rematch with the Arlington Cardinals on Thursday, February 13th at home.  The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Defense and Late Rally Give Cardinal Girls Road Win

A late defensive stand and offensive rally helped give the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals a road win over the Centerville Tornadoes 47-40 on Friday, February 7th.

The first half was close with neither team gaining much of an advantage.  The Cardinals led after the first quarter by just one point at 12-11.  St Mary was able to push their lead to four points at 20-16 with 4:30 to go in the second quarter.  Centerville ended the first half on a 5-0 run for a 21-20 halftime lead.

The Tornadoes slowly built on their halftime lead and extended it five points at 32-27 with 2:00 to go in the third quarter.  That’s when the Cardinal defense took control of the game.  St Mary went on a 5-0 run to close out the third quarter to tie the game at 32-32.  The Cardinals then held Centerville scoreless in the first two and a half minutes of the fourth quarter while building a six-point lead at 38-32.  By the time Centerville scored in the fourth quarter, St Mary had gone on an 11-0 run.  St Mary extended their lead to eight points at 43-35 after a three-point shot by Ella Griffin with just over two minutes to go in the game and then held on to the lead for the win.

Ella Heinitz led the Cardinals with 18 points in the game.  Griffin finished with 11 points.

St Mary (9-8) will host the Arlington Cardinals on Friday, February 14th.

Cardinal Boys Blaze the Nets in Win over Garretson

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals put another game in the win column after a 78-47 win over the Garretson Blue Dragons at home on Monday, February 3rd.

The most impressive part of the win was the first quarter.  The Cardinals led by 30 points at the end of the quarter at 37-7.  St Mary missed a total of four shots in the quarter.  They were 6-7 on two-point field goals, 6-8 from three-point shots, and 7-8 from the free throw line.  Connor Libis had 26 of those points while only missing one shot in the quarter (3-3 2pt, 5-6 3pt, 5-5 FT).  The Cardinals just cruised from there.

The two teams both scored 19 points as the Cardinals maintained a 30-point lead at halftime of 56-26.  With the 30-point lead, the running clock was put into play for the entire second half.  The Cardinals outscored the Blue Dragons 22-21 in the second half.

St Mary finished the game shooting 53% (26-49) from the field, 55% (11-20) from three-point area, and 88% (15-17) from the free-throw line.  The Cardinals had 24 team rebounds and nine steals.

Libis finished with a game-high 40 points.  Max Herber followed with 13 points and three rebounds.  Weston Geraets added 10 points and six rebounds.

St Mary (11-2) will host Deubrook Area on Saturday, February 8th.  The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Cardinal Boys Notch Another Win in Lake Preston

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal boys earned another victory on the season with a 52-30 road win over the Lake Preston Divers on Friday, January 31st.

The Divers started scored the first four points of the game, but the lead would be short lived.  St Mary ended the first quarter on a 10-0 run for a 10-4 quarter break lead.  The run continued into the second quarter as the Cardinals scored the first four points before the Divers ended the run at 14-0.  St Mary continued to pull away in the second quarter and ended the half leading 25-9.  The defense of the Cardinals limited Lake Preston to only seven third quarter points as the lead grew to 40-16 heading into the fourth quarter.  The Cardinal lead grew to thirty points early in the fourth quarter as St Mary cruised to the victory.

St Mary only shot 30% (17-56) from the field, 11% (2-18) from three-point area, and 67% (16-24) from the free-throw line, but the team pulled down a total of 39 rebounds and had 11 steals.

Ten different players for the Cardinals got into the scorebook.  Connor Libis had 13 points, five rebounds, and two steals.  Connar Kangas had nine points.  Max Herber finished with eight points and seven rebounds.  Weston Geraets, Colin Winberg, John Pica, and Ryan Eining all had four points each.  Sam Palmer, Thomas Eining, and Eli Longville also scored.

The Cardinals (10-2) will host the Garretson Blue Dragons on Monday, February 3rd.  The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Cardinal Girls Rebound at Lake Preston

Twenty-four hours after a tough shooting night, the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal girls rebounded nicely with a 69-45 win on the road against the Lake Preston Divers on Friday, January 31st.  St Mary led from start to finish in the game.

The Cardinals used a huge first quarter to propel them to the victory.  St Mary led by 17 points at the end of the first quarter at 23-6.  The lead grew to 22 points at 40-18 by halftime as the Cardinals continued to dominate the game.  The Cardinals were able to cruise through the second half as they held a comfortable lead throughout the final two quarters.  They ended the second half with a 29-27 scoring margin.

The shots fell through the hoop at a much higher rate against the Divers than they did the previous night.  St Mary finished the game shooting 41% (27-66) from the field, 32% (6-19) from three-point area, and 69% (9-13) from the free-throw line.  They had a total of 37 team rebounds and 14 steals in the game.

Nine different players scored in the game for the Cardinals.  Ella Heinitz finished with 16 points, three steals and two rebounds.  Ella Griffin had 12 points, eight rebounds, and two steals.  Brianna Griffin, Maya Heinitz, and Courtney Brown all had eight points.  Sydney Klein had seven points, five rebounds and four steals, and Karlie Klein finished with six points and three rebounds.  Delaney Longville had six rebounds in the game.

The Cardinals even their season record at 8-8 on the season.  St Mary will travel to Centerville on Friday, February 7th.

Hoops Unkind to Cardinal Girls Against Cubs

The basketball hoops seemed to be unkind to the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals on Thursday, January 30th.  The Cardinals fell to the Alcester-Hudson Cubs 52-41 at Dell Rapids St Mary High School.  The Cardinals shot just 22% total from the field and 9% from three-point area in the game.

St Mary did start off well as they got out to an 8-1 run to open the game.  The Cubs answered with a 12-0 to finish the quarter for a 13-8 lead.  The second quarter was back and forth, and the Cardinals were able to cut into the Cubs lead.  Alcester-Hudson led 24-22 at halftime.

The first eleven minutes of the second half was again back-and-forth between the two teams.  Neither team had a lead larger than three points in the third quarter.  St Mary ended the quarter leading by one at 35-34.  The two teams were tied 37-37 and then again at 39-39 with 4:45 to play in the game.  The Cubs then went on a 7-0 run to lead 46-39 with 2:13 left.  With the Cubs leading 47-40 with 1:15 on the clock, Alcester-Hudson made enough free throws to hold onto the lead for the win.

St Mary was 12-54 from the field, 2-22 from three-point area, but 68% (15-22) from the free-throw line.  Ella Heinitz led the team with 17 points in the game.  Ella Griffin also finished in double figures with 10 points.  Courtney Brown had six points.

The Cardinals (7-8) are back in action on Friday, January 31st.  They will travel to Lake Preston for a double-header with the boys, and both games can be seen on Big Sioux Media.
