Cardinal Volleyball Starts 2021 with Win

August 27, 2021 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

Photo taken and used with permission by Tammy Chamley

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal volleyball team played in front of a home crowd to start the 2021 season on Thursday, August 26th.  The Cardinals are coming off a 10-9 season in 2020 losing to Chester in the Region 4B tournament in the SoDak 16 qualifying match.

St Mary returns two seniors from last year’s team, Courtney Brown and Addy Gilbert.  Head coach Sandra Heinitz said the team returns Ella Griffin, Maya Heinitz, Josie Baumberger, Whitney Warwick, and Jaycee Tebay as key players.  She also mentioned that new comers Brianna Lindeman, Katie Scherff, Madala Hanson, and Brianna Griffin will be players to watch for the Cardinals.

“This season I am excited to see our team continue to work hard and improve and to build upon our finish from last season.  Last year was our first winning season in quite some time at St Mary.  I hope to see our players continue to work together as a team, have great effort and attitude, and to compete every time we step out on the court.  I am excited to see what this team can accomplish,” said Coach Heinitz.

The Cardinals showed off the 2021 team with a win over the Alcester-Hudson Cubs in four sets.  They won by scores of 21-25, 25-17, 25-17, and 25-23.

St Mary fell behind early in the first set and found themselves trailing 16-8.  They started to find their groove and picked up some momentum, tying the match 19-19.  The Cubs were able to hold off the complete comeback by the Cardinals and win the first set 25-21.

But the momentum the Cardinals gained in the first set carried over throughout the rest of the match.  St Mary jumped out to an 8-1 lead in the second set, and they were able to cruise from there for the 25-17 win.  The third set started the same way as the second set.  St Mary got out to a quick lead early and again took at 25-17 win.  The two teams battled back and forth throughout the fourth set as neither team was able to get a lead of more than three points.  The Cardinals put together the late rally to take the fourth set 25-23 and win the match.

Brown finished the night with 16 kills, eight digs and four ace serves.  M. Heinitz added 10 kills, eight ace serves, and six digs.  E. Grifin had four kills, eight set assists, six ace serves, and four digs.  Lindeman had 13 set assists, five digs, three kills, two ace serves, and a block.  Gilbert finished with three kills, two digs, and two ace serves.  Hanson added eight set assists, and Josie Baumberger had eight digs.

The Cardinals (1-0) will play in the Estelline Tournament on Saturday, August 28th.

Cardinals Fall in 2021 Football Season Opener

August 22, 2021 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

Photo taken and used with permission by Tammy Chamley

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals started their 2021 football season at home on Friday, August 23rd.  The Cardinals hosted the Gayville-Volin Raiders, and it was the Raiders who went home victorious, 42-8.

The Cardinals looked to get the momentum very early in the game.  Gabriel Lamb dropped Nate Quatier for a loss on the first play of the game, and then CJ Smith intercepted Quatier’s pass on the next play.  St Mary had the ball two plays after the opening kickoff.  The momentum would be short lived however.  The Raiders forced and recovered a fumble three plays later.

Kyle Hirsch scored with 7:37 in the first quarter for the Raiders.  They converted the two-point conversion for an 8-0 lead.  St Mary had to punt on their second drive.  The Raiders then marched down the field on their next possession.  Hirisch had a 22-yard touchdown run with 4:06 left in the first quarter.  Anther two-point conversion pushed the lead to 16-0.

St Mary continued to struggle a bit offensively in their next drive.  The Raiders forced and recovered another fumble late in the quarter.  The Cardinal defense was able to hold Gayville-Volin to a punt, but the punt returned was fumbled by St Mary and recovered by the Raiders.  The Raiders turned that into points after a one-yard touchdown run by Quatier.  Another two-point conversion made the score 24-0.

The Raiders stopped a Cardinal drive that was moving in a positive direction for St Mary.  This time the drive stopped on an interception that was returned 48 yards for a touchdown by Ben Rumsey with 9:19 to play in the first half.  Gayville-Volin got another interception later in the second quarter, this time by Hirsch.  They turned that into  more points, scoring with 1:05 to play in the second quarter, and the Raiders led 36-0 at halftime.

St Mary took the kickoff to start the second half.  The Cardinals looked to be headed towards a score late in the third quarter, but the Raiders got their third interception of the game.  Rumsey intercepted a pass in the endzone and ran it back all the way for a Raider touchdown with 4:31 to play in the third quarter to make the score 42-0.  St Mary was able to find the endzone with 7:37 left in the game.  Smith connected with Camden Gilbert on a 23-yard touchdown pass.  Smith then completed a pass to Lucas Flemmer for the two point conversion.

The Raiders finished with 201 yards of offense, 104 passing yards and 97 rushing yards.  The Cardinals finished with 189 yards of offense, 107 rushing yards and 82 passing yards, but turned the ball over six times.

Ty Brown had 11 carries for 66 yards.  Gabriel Lindeman had three carries for 20 yards.  Smith finished the game 5-12 passing for 82 yards and three interceptions.  Gilbert had two catches for 32 yards and a touchdown.  Tate Bunkers had a catch for 34 yards, and Brown had a catch for 10 yards.

Noah Olund led the defense with eight tackles.  Brown finished with five tackles.  Nic Gaspar had 4.5 tackles, and Bunkers and Kyle Bares both had four tackles each.  Smith also had an interception.

The Cardinals (0-1) will travel to play the Alcester-Hudson Cubs on Friday, August 27th.
