Cardinal Girls Basketball Cruises to Season-Opening Win

DRSM_vs_ORR_GBB_12-8-17The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal basketball team cruised to a 58-12 win over the Oldham-Ramona/Rutland Raiders on Friday, December 8th.  It was the first game of the 2017-2018 season for the Cardinals.

St Mary got out to a big lead in the first half and led 37-6 at halftime.  They were able to keep the momentum going in the second half.  The Cardinals pushed the lead to 33 points by the end of the third quarter at 45-12.  St Mary would then hold the Raider scoreless in the final quarter for the win.

St Mary used a balanced scoring attack for the victory.  Ella Heinitz led the team with 14 points.  Maddie Schwebach added 11 points.  Cassy Geraets had nine points, and Sydney Cook finished the game with eight points.

The Cardinals (1-0) will have a busy week the week of December 11th through 16th.  St Mary will travel to Mitchell to play Mitchell Christian on Tuesday, December 12th.  They will then play Estelline in Estelline on Thursday, December 14th.  The Cardinals will then see Estelline again on Saturday, December 16th at the Entringer Classic in Colman.

2016-2017 Post Season Basketball Awards

BasketballSeveral players from the Dell Rapids and Dell Rapids St Mary girls and boys basketball teams received post season awards for their play this season.

Jackie Wolles earned an Honorable Mention All-Conference for the Cardinals in the Dakota Valley Conference.  Connor Libis was a First Team All-Conference selection, and Luke Brown was also an Honorable Mention All-Conference player.

Jayda Knuppe and Emma Paul were Second Team All-Conference selections for the Dakota XII Conference.  Arial Hoffman was an Honorable Mention All-Conference.  Knuppe was also a State A All-Tourney selection.  Jeffrey Schuch and Sheldon Siemonsma were Second Team All-Conference selections, and Mason Peter was an Honorable Mention All-Conference selection.

Cardinal Girls Fall in District Opener

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals had their season come to an end in the opening round of the District 7B Tournament on Tuesday, February 21st.  The Cardinals lost to the Chester Area Flyers 36-53 at Dell Rapids St Mary High School.

Chester Area opened up the game on a 4-0 run, but St Mary answered with a 5-0 run.  The Cardinals led 5-4 at the end of the first quarter.  The offenses picked up the pace in the second quarter, and the Flyers went to the locker room at halftime with a slim 19-17 lead.  Chester Area was able to extend the lead in the third quarter 36-24.  The Flyers then outscored St Mary 11-5 in the first four minutes of the fourth quarter to pull ahead 47-29 as they earned the tournament win.

The Cardinals end their season with an overall record of 9-12.  Chester Area will advance to the semifinals of the District 7B Tournament on Thursday, February 23rd.  The Flyers will travel to Elkton to take on the #1 seed Elkton-Lake Benton Elks.

Cardinal Girls Erase Halftime Deficit in Win

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals trailed by 14 points at halftime to the Hendricks, MN Grizzlies. The Cardinal defense only allowed 12 second half points to earn a 37-36 come-from-behind win on Thursday, February 16th, in Hendricks.

The Cardinals offense struggled to get going in the first half.  St Mary trailed 13-3 through the midway point of the first half and trailed 24-10 at halftime.  St Mary got things rolling in the second half as they went on a 15-5 run in the first part of the second half to close the gap at 29-25 with 9:41 remaining in the game.  St Mary took the lead at 35-33 with 1:41 to go and pushed that lead to four points with :32 to go in the game to complete the 14-point comeback win.

Jackie Wolles finished the game with 10 points in a balanced Cardinal scoring attack.  Ella Heinitz finished with eight points, and Kennedi Mullaney and Lexi Klein both had six points each.

The Cardinals finish their regular season with a 9-11 record and will be the #4 seed in the District 7B tournament.  The Cardinals will host Chester Area on Tuesday, February 21st.  The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Colman-Egan Spoils Senior Night for Cardinal Girls

DRSM LogoThe Colman-Egan Hawks played the part of spoiler for the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals as the Hawks defeated the Cardinals 48-37 during Senior Night on Tuesday, February 14th, at Dell Rapids St Mary High School.

St Mary held a 10-9 lead after a back-and-forth first quarter.  The Hawks early in the second quarter, but St Mary tied the game at 22-22 after a basket by Maddie Schwebach with 1:58 to go in the half.  Colman-Egan finished out the quarter on a 5-2 run and held a 27-24 halftime lead.  The third quarter proved to be turning point in the game as the Colman-Egan defense held St Mary to just one point and had a 37-25 lead heading into the final quarter.  St Mary was unable to get any closer than nine points the remainder of the game.

The Cardinals finished the game shooting 31% (12-39) from the field, 0-9 from three-point area, and 57% (13-23) from the free-throw line.  St Mary had a total of 27 team rebounds, six assists, and 11 steals.

Jackie Wolles led all scorers in the game with 15 points.  Wolles also had three rebounds.  Lexi Klein had nine points and five rebounds.  Ella Heinitz finished with five points.  Sydney Cook pulled down seven rebounds, and Cassy Geraets grabbed five rebounds.

St Mary (8-11) will finished their regular season on the road at Hendricks, MN on Thursday, February 16th.

Elks Big Second Half Leads to Win over Cardinal Girls

DRSM LogoThe Elkton-Lake Benton Elks outscored the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals 31-11 in the second half and earned a 54-39 win on Friday, February 10th, in Elkton.

The Cardinals had a strong first half as they got out to a 16-11 lead after the first quarter.  Both teams scored 12 points in the second quarter, and St Mary lead 28-23 at halftime.  The Elks, however, held St Mary to just three third-quarter points while scoring 19, and Elkton-Lake Benton held a 42-31 lead after the third quarter.  The Elks outscored St Mary 12-8 in the final quarter.

Seven different players scored for the Cardinals.  Sydney Cook led the team with 11 points.  Jackie Wolles finished with eight points in the game.  Cassy Geraets added five points, and Ella Heinitz, Lexi Klein and Maddie Schwebach all had four points each.

St Mary (8-10) will host Colman-Egan on Tuesday, February 14th, in their final home game of the season.  The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Defense Paves Way to Cardinal Girls Win

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal defense was the key to their win over the Arlington Cardinals 38-19 in Arlington on Friday, February 3rd.  This is the fifth win for St Mary in their last seven games.

St Mary used a strong defense in the first quarter to set the tone in the ball game.  They held Arlington to just three first quarter points and held an 11-3 lead at the end of the first quarter.  Both teams scored nine points in the second quarter, and St Mary maintained their eight-point lead of 20-12 at halftime.  St Mary then just allowed seven total second half points while scoring 18 on their way to the victory.

Ella Heinitz led St Mary on offense with 11 points in the game.  Sydney Cook and Lexi Klein both finished with nine points each.

St Mary (8-9) travels to Elkton on Friday, February 10th, to take on the Elkton-Lake Benton Elks.

Cardinal Girls Pick up Seventh Win

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals overcame a first quarter deficit to win their seventh game of the season on Monday, January 30th, at Dell Rapids St Mary High School.  The Cardinals defeated the Bridgerwater/Emery Huskies 44-27 in front of their home crowd.

St Mary got off to a bit of a slow start and only scored five first quarter points.  The Huskies had an 11-5 lead at the first quarter break.  The Cardinals, however, got the offense going in the second quarter and outscored the Huskies 15-7 to take a two-point halftime lead at 20-18.  The St Mary defense would hold Bridgewater/Emery to just nine total second half points while scoring 24 of their own for the win.

Ella Heinitz led the Cardinals in scoring on the night with 10 points.

The Cardinals (7-9) travel to Arlington to battle the Cardinals on Friday, February 3rd.

Cardinal Girls Finish Third in DVC Tourney

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals avenged an earlier loss to the Colman-Egan Hawks on Saturday, January 21st, in Colman.  The Cardinals earned a 47-40 to finish third at the Dakota Valley Conference tournament.  Colman-Egan had beaten St Mary 46-29 on December 23rd at the Entringer Classic.

The first quarter proved to be a very low scoring quarter as the two teams combined for just nine points.  St Mary had a 6-3 lead at the end of the first quarter.  Both teams then scored 12 points each in the second quarter, and the Cardinals took an 18-15 lead into hafltime after Jackie Wolles hit a three-pointer to end the half.  The Cardinals were able to push their lead to ten at 34-24 by the end of the third quarter.  The Hawks outscored St Mary 16-13, but the Cardinals hung on for the win.

Two players finished in double figures for St Mary.  Sydney Cook led the way with 15 points.  Wolles ended the game with 14 points.  Kennedi Mullaney added nine points, and Ella Heinitz had six points.

St Mary (6-8) will travel to Baltic to take on the Bulldogs on Monday, January 23rd.

Dolphin Defense Shuts Down Cardinal Girls in 2nd Half

DRSM LogoThe Deubrook Area Dolphins held the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals to just eight total points in the second half and pulled away for a 48-29 win in the semifinals of the Dakota Valley Conference tournament in Estelline on Thursday, January 17th.

The Dolphins led by as many as seven points in the first quarter before the Cardinals closed the gap at 14-13 at the end of the first quarter.  The Cardinals scored the first bucket for their first lead of the game in the second quarter at 15-14, but Deubrook regained the lead.  St Mary was again able to pull within a point at 22-21 at halftime.  Both teams struggled offensively in the third quarter as both teams combined to score just 14 points.  The Dolphins were able to push their lead to seven at 32-25 at the end of the third quarter.  The Deubrook Area offense found its groove in the fourth quarter and outscored St Mary 16-4 in the final quarter for the win.

St Mary (5-8) will play Colman-Egan for third place in the DVC Tournament on Saturday, January 21st, in Colman at 4:00 p.m. in the old gym.
