Cardinal Boys Win on Senior Night

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal boys earned their first victory of the year on Senior Night over the Baltic Bulldogs on Friday, February 20th.  St Mary’s first five field goals were three-point shots in the first quarter.  Baltic held a 14-9 lead with 3:00 to go in the first quarter, but the Cardinals ended the quarter on a 10-0 run to take the lead 19-14 at the end of the quarter.  St Mary held Baltic to just one point most of the second quarter while continuing to build their lead.  The Cardinals led 35-20 at halftime.

St Mary continued to grow the lead in the third quarter as they were able to take a 16-point lead at 49-33 into the fourth quarter.  The Cardinals were held to just nine points in the final quarter, but were able to hang on for the win.

St Mary’s record is now 1-18 on the year.  The Cardinals will end the regular season in Chester on Monday, February 23rd.  The game will be webcast on Big Sioux Media.

Cardinal Boys Can’t Hang on for Win Against Colman/Egan

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal boys held a 10-9 at the end of the first quarter, but couldn’t hang on for the win against the Colman/Egan Hawks on Thursday, February 12th, in Colman.  The C/E Hawks were able to take the lead heading into halftime at 23-20.  Both teams scored nine points in the third quarter, and the C/E Hawks maintained a three-point lead at 32-29.  The C/E Hawks held St Mary scoreless through the first half of the fourth quarter, and the Cardinals fell to Colman/Egan 49-38.

St Mary shot 33% (14-42) from the field, 38% (8-21) from three-point area, and 20% (2-10) from the free-throw line.  The Cardinals had 23 team rebounds and turned the ball over 11 times.  Mitch Brown had 15 points in the game.  Christian Schneiders finished with 10 points and seven rebounds.  Noah Fiegen pulled down eight rebounds in the game.

The Cardinals fall to 0-17 on the year.  St Mary travels to Oldham-Ramona/Rutland to take on the Raiders on Monday, February 16th.

Cardinal Boys Can’t Overcome Canistota

DRSM LogoThe Canistota Hawks defeated the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal boys basketball team 79-45 on Monday, February 9th, at St Mary High School.  The game was played as part of a double-header as a make-up game from earlier in the season.

The Hawks started the game on a 15-2 run over the first four minutes.  The Cardinals were able to close the gap to 19-10 by the end of the first quarter.  St Mary pulled within seven points at 21-14 in the first two minutes of the second quarter, but that was as close as the Cardinals would get.  Canistota extended their lead to 33-14 with 3:45 to go in the half after a 12-0 run.  The Hawks ended the half ahead 38-18.  Canistota scored 41 more points in the second half while holding St Mary to 27.

The Cardinals fall to 0-16 on the year.  St Mary looks to pick up their first win of the season in Colman on Thursday, February 12th, as the Cardinals face the Colman/Egan Hawks.  The game will be webcast on Big Sioux Media.

Cardinal Boys Can’t Slow Down Elks

DRSM LogoThe Elkton/Lake Benton Elks earned their 14th win of the season with a 54-30 win over the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal boys on Thursday, February 5th, in Dell Rapids.  The Elks held the Cardinals to just two points in the first quarter, and only eight points the entire first half on their way to a 29-8 halftime lead.

The Cardinals were able to get a little offense going in the third quarter, but still trailed the Elks 42-18 at the end of the third.  St Mary was able to put in 12 points in the final quarter, but wasn’t enough to stop the Elks.

Noah Fiegen led the Cardinals with 11 points and 15 rebounds.  Christian Schneiders finished the night with six points and 16 rebounds.  The Carinals had a total of 41 rebounds, eight steals, 13 assists, and turned the ball over 20 times.  St Mary shot 28% (13-46) from the field, 11% (1-9) from three-point area, and 50% (3-6) from the free-throw line.

The Cardinals look to pick up their first win of the year on Monday, February 9th, as St Mary will host Canistota in a make-up game from earlier in the year.  The game will be part of a double-header and webcast on Big Sioux Media.

Cardinal Boys Lose at DVC Tourney

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal boys basketball team lost the opening round of the Dakota Valley Conference Tournament on Tuesday, January 20th, in Estelline.  The Cardinals lost to Elkton-Lake Benton 83-52.

The Elks jumped out to a nine-point lead by the end of the first quarter at 21-12.  The Cardinals were able to cut that lead down to eight by halftime at 44-36.  However, the second-half defense of the Elks proved to be too much for the Cardinals.  The Elks outscored the Cardinals 22-9 to take a 66-45 lead at the end of the third quarter.  St Mary was only able to score seven points in the fourth quarter, while the Elks added 17 more.

The Cardinals were led by Mitch Brown with 13 points.  Noah Fiegen added 12 points.  The Elks were led by Heath Schindler with 37 points, 10 steals, and seven assists.  Nick Krog added 18 points.

The Cardinals fall to 0-11 on the year.

Cardinal Boys Fall in Overtime

DRSM LogoGayville-Volin’s Grant Rice hit two three-pointers in the final minute to force overtime, then the Raiders outscored Dell Rapids St. Mary 7-2 in the extra period to claim a 51-46 victory over the Cardinals in the Tri-Valley Conference boys’ basketball Classic on Saturday, January 17th, at Laddie E. Cimpl Arena in Yankton.

Rice and Luke Hummel each had 14 points for Gayville-Volin. Brandon VanOsdel finished with 12 points and nine rebounds in the victory.

Mitch Brown scored 14 points, hitting four three-pointers, to lead St. Mary. Matt Farmer and Noah Fiegen each had 10 points. Christian Schnieders had 12 rebounds for the Cardinals.

The Cardinals fall to 0-10 on the year.  St. Mary plays Elkton-Lake Benton in the opening round of the Dakota Valley Conference Tournament on Tuesday, January 20th, in Estelline.

Garreton Uses Big 1st Half to Beat Cardinal Boys

DRSM LogoIn a make-up game from earlier in the season, the Garretson Blue Dragons defeated the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal boys basketball team 52-34 on Monday, January 12th, in Dell Rapids.

Garretson’s defense held the Cardinals to just six points in the entire first half.  The Blue Dragons led 16-1 after the first quarter.  They took a 24-point lead into halftime at 30-6.  The St Mary offense found some rhythm in the second half, but it wasn’t enough to make a come back against Garretson.  St Mary out-scored Garretson 11-10 in the third quarter to trail 40-17.  The Cardinals then put up 17 points in the fourth quarter, holding Garretson to just 12.

The Cardinals record falls to 0-8 on the year.

Tough Second Half Sinks Cardinal Boys

DRSMvsLP_BBB_1-9-15A tough second half for the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal boys basketball team allowed the Lake Preston Divers to earn their first victory of the season 50-39 over the Cardinals on Friday, January 9th, in Lake Preston.

The first half of the opening quarter was back-and-forth as the game was tied 3-3, 5-5, and 7-7.  The Cardinals then went on an 8-2 run to close out the first quarter and had a 15-9 lead over the Divers at the end of the first quarter.  St Mary held an eight-point lead two times in the second quarter.  The opened up the quarter on a 4-2 run to go ahead 19-11.  The Cardinals also led 24-16.  Lake Preston was able to pull within four points at 24-20, but the Cardinals extended the lead to 28-21 late in the quarter.  The Divers scored the final two points of the half to cut the Cardinal lead to five at halftime, 28-23.

The Divers opened up the third quarter on an 8-0 run to take their first lead since early in the first quarter at 31-28.  Lake Preston was able to push that lead to 37-32 by the end of the quarter, holding St Mary to just one field goal in the entire third quarter.  The Cardinals closed the gap to 39-34 early in the fourth quarter, but was outscored by Lake Preston 11-5 over the rest of the game.

Mitch Brown led the Cardinals with 15 points in the game.  Ryan Welbig finished with seven points, and Zach Geraets and Christian Schnieders each had four points.  The Cardinals shot 10-18 from the free-throw line in the game.  Lake Preston was led by Colton Hageman with 19 points, and Brock Brumann had 18 points.  The Divers were 19-33 from the free-throw line.

St Mary falls to 0-7 on the year.  The Cardinals will play Garretson in a make-up game on Monday, January 12th, in Dell Rapids.  The game will be webcast on Big Sioux Media.

Cardinal Boys Basketball Rally Falls Short

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal boys basketball team lost to the Colman-Egan Hawks on Saturday, December 27th, at the Entringer Classic in Brookings by a final score of 52-38.

Colman-Egan started the game scoring the first 12 points to take a 12-0 lead with 4:45 to play in the first quarter.  The Cardinals were able to get a little offense going late in the first quarter and trailed 18-6 after the first.  St Mary made their run in the second quarter.  Trailing 22-10 with 5:30 left in the half, the Cardinals went on a 13-5 run to end the quarter and trailed the C-E Hawks 27-23 at halftime.

St Mary scored the first basket of the third quarter with 6:30 remaining to pull within two points at 27-25.  Colman-Egan scored the next four points to extend their lead to 31-25.  Noah Fiegen hit two free throws to close the gap to 31-27 with 5:34 left in the third quarter, however, the Cardinals were only able to get two more points in the quarter.  The C-E Hawks pushed their lead to 40-29 at the end of the quarter.  St Mary pulled within 10 at 41-31 with 5:50 to go in the game, but that was as close as they would get as Colman-Egan went on a 9-0 run to put the game away.

The Cardinals finished the game shooting 36% (16-45) from the field, 17% (1-6) from three-point area, and 50% (5-10) from the free-throw line.  St Mary had 35 team rebounds, seven assists, nine steals, and 25 turnovers.

Fiegen finished with 20 points and seven rebounds in the game.   Ryan Welbig and Mitch Brown each had four points.

The Cardinals fall to 0-5 on the year.  St Mary will travel to Bridgewater on Saturday, January 3rd, for a make-up game with Bridgewater-Emery.  Tip-off is at 2:00 p.m.

Third Quarter Rally Lifts Centerville to Win

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal boys basketball team lost to the Centerville Tornadoes on Tuesday, December 16th, in Centerville 74-53.  The Cardinals lead after the first quarter by a score of 23-16.  The Tornadoes outscored St Mary 24-11 in the second quarter to take a 40-34 halftime lead.  However, it was the third quarter that rallied the Tornadoes to the win.  Centerville outscores St Mary 24-4 in the third quarter to extend their lead to 64-38.  The Cardinals did outscore the Tornadoes 15-10 in the final quarter.

Mitch Brown led the Cardinals with 17 points in the game.  Ryan Welbig added nine points.  Zach Geraets finished with eight points, and Matt Farmer had five points.

Head coach Pete Schmidt said, “Ryan came off the bench to score nine points and played great defense on their leading scorer.  Mitch shot the ball well connecting on four three’s.”

St Mary falls to 0-2 on the year.  The Cardinals will host DeSmet on Friday, December 19th.  The game will be webcast on Big Sioux Media.
