The Dell Rapids 16U baseball team has split their first two games of the 2024 season. On Wednesday, June 5th, Dell Rapids defeated Volga, but they fell to Flandreau on Monday, June 10th.
Dell Rapids 8, Volga 7
Volga scored three runs in the top of the first. Dell Rapids cut the lead to 3-2 after two runs in the bottom of the third. Volga got two runs in the fourth, one in the fifth, and one more in the sixth. Dell Rapids got a run in the fifth and two in the sixth to make the score 7-5. They scored two more in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game 7-7 and send it into extra innings. The score remained 7-7 into the bottom of the ninth. Carson Maeschen put a ball in play with two outs that resulted in an error that scored Thomas LaVoy for the winning run.
Kenny Swanson had two hits. Jackson Peppel and Jake Heinitz both had a single and an RBI. LaVoy, Maeschen, and Ryan Stubbe all had one hit each. Logan Donovan added an RBI. Connor Hanson pitched 3 1/3 innings and allowed five earned runs on seven hits and a walk with two strikeouts. Gage Bunkers pitched 5 2/3 innings and allowed two runs, both unearned, on four hits and a walk with three strikeouts.
Flandreau 7, Dell Rapids 4
Flandreau built an early 3-0 lead by scoring two runs in the second and another in the bottom of the third. Dell Rapids put two runs on the board in the top of the fifth and then took the lead 4-3 after two more runs in the sixth. Flandreau, however, scored four times in the bottom of the sixth for the win.
Peppel had a hit and two RBIs. Hanson and J Paterson both had an RBI. Bunkers pitched three innings and allowed four earned runs on six hits and a walk with five strikeouts. Peppel pitched three innings and allowed three runs, one earned, on two hits and three walks with five strikeouts.
