The Dell Rapids Quarrier girls hosted the #6 ranked Sioux Valley Cossacks for the Quarriers’ final regular season game of the year on Monday, February 16th. The Cossacks got hot late in the second half and pulled away for a 67-52 win.
After a scoreless first couple of minutes to start the game, Sioux Valley went on a 10-2 run. Dell Rapids responded with a 12-4 run, and the first quarter ended in a 14-14 tie. The teams played even throughout most of the second quarter. The Cossacks made a shot at the buzzer to go ahead 29-27 at halftime.
The Quarriers stayed close with Sioux Valley to start the second half. The Cossacks led by just one point, 34-33, with 3:30 to play in the third quarter. That’s when they got hot from three-point area. They pushed the lead to 45-40 with 1:00 to go and finished the quarter leading 51-42. They continued their run into the fourth quarter making a total of nine three-point shots after leading by just the point midway through the fourth quarter.
Dell Rapids shot 32% (20-62) overall in the game, 18% (3-17) on three-point shots, and 56% (9-16) from the free-throw line. Sioux Valley finished the game shooting 42% (25-59) overall, 39% (14-36) from three-point area, and 3-4 from the free-throw line.
Rorie Thoreson had 23 points, seven rebounds, five assists, and four steals. Elin Schoenhard had 11 points and seven rebounds. Jersi Schultz ended with seven points and 12 rebounds. Clarie Witte added three points and seven rebounds.
Dell Rapids ended the regular season with a 13-7 record. They will now wait for the Region 3A tournament which will begin on Tuesday, February 24th.
