Mustang Track Has First Meet of Season in Garretson

The Tri-Valley Mustang track team had their first meet of the season at the Jesse James Invite in Garretson on Saturday, April 9th.

For the girls team, Emry Jones had a fourth place finish in the 100m dash. Jones also placed eighth in the 100m hurdles. The 4x100m relay team of Jones, Danika Fluth, Hailey Sorenson, and Mattie Huwe placed eighth.

Michael Beyer had a second place finish in the 110m hurdles for the boys team. Matthew Cypher was seventh in the same event. The 4x100m relay team of Levi Kretzschmar, Aiden Bunde, Carter Sorenson, and Eli McFarland placed third. The 4x200m relay team of Sorenson, Dustin Sees, McFarland, and Beyer placed third. Sees placed third and McFarland placed seventh in the long jump.

Tri-Valley is scheduled to be at the Chester Area Booster Club track meet on Tuesday, April 12th, weather permitting.

Tri-Valley Baseball Drops Game to MVPCS

The Tri-Valley Mustang high school club baseball team dropped their second game of the season, 11-3, on Sunday, April 3rd at Mt Vernon/Plankinton/Corsica-Stickney (MVPCS).

Tri-Valley got the early lead in the top of the first inning.  Carter Sorenson led the game with a single.  Sorenson later stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch.  Cole Focken had an RBI sacrifice fly to score Sorenson.  MVPCS then scored five unanswered runs over the next three innings.  MVPCS scored two in the bottom of the first, one in the second, and two more in the third for a 5-1 lead.

After a scoreless fourth inning, Tri-Valley got another run in the top of the fifth.  Lawson Loiseau drew a one-out walk, and Sorenson followed with a double scoring Loiseau.  Tri-Valley led 5-2 after five innings, but MVPCS scored six times in the bottom of the sixth to put the game out of reach.  Tri-Valley got one more run in the top of the seventh.

Sorenson had three hits, including two doubles, and two RBIs.  Alex Wingen had a hit, and Focken had an RBI.  Kaden Egger pitched three innings allowing five runs, two earned, on three hits with four walks and a strikeout.  Riley Carlson pitched 2 2/3 innings allowing six runs, none of them earned, on two hits with two walks and two strikeouts.

Tri-Valley Track Team Experienced and Ready for 2022

The Tri-Valley Mustang track team is returning and 15 athletes who participated in the state track meet last year and will have a total of 12 seniors on the team.

The seniors for this year are Brandon Havlovic, Michael Beyer, Cory McDonald, Josh Leiseth, Connor Christensen, Jaden Siemonsma, Jose Mendoza, Zach Powell, Isaac McFarland, Barrett Althoff, Hannah West, and Paige Jewett.

“We have a lot of experienced leadership returning this year, which is great because we also have quite a few people new to high school track and field.  Both the boys and girls teams have worked very hard in preparing for this season.  Practices with them have been high energy and a lot of fun.  Our seniors have been outstanding in practice so far leading drills, teaching and encouraging our younger athletes, and setting a standard of excellence.  I’m proud of them already and cannot wait to see all their hard work pay off over the course of the next couple months,” said head coach Derik Fossum.

The season officially starts on Tuesday, April 5th.  Tri-Valley will be at West Central High School for the West Central Early Bird meet.

Mustang Girls Golf Returns One from 2021

The Tri-Valley Mustang girls golf team returns one golfer from last season, but everyone will be looking to play in their first varsity meet in 2022.  There are a total of eight golfers signed up for the Mustangs this season.

Head coach Brandon DeWitt said, “I’m hoping to know much more about my team before our first meet at Dakota Valley on April 26th.  The girls signed up this year do have more overall golf experience.”

Tri-Valley Baseball Drops Season Opener

The Tri-Valley Mustang high school club baseball team opened their 2022 season on the road at Alexandria taking on Hanson-Bridgewater-Emery on Monday, March 28th.  After two scoreless innings, Hanson-Bridgewater-Emery scored four straight runs and held for a 4-1 win.

H-B-E took advantage of a walk and error to start the bottom of the third inning and scored a run on a sacrifice fly.  H-B-E scored three times in the bottom of the fourth on two singles, a walk, and two Tri-Valley errors.

Tri-Valley plated a run in the top of the sixth inning.  Connor Christensen and Barrett Althoff both drew one-out walks.  Noah Haynes had a sacrifice bunt to advance both runners.  Carter Sorenson had an RBI single scoring Christensen.  Althoff was thrown out at the plate to end the inning.

Haynes, Sorenson, and Lawson Loiseau all had singles in the game.  Riley Carlson pitched four innings allowing four runs, one earned, on four hits with three walks and six strikeouts.  Kaden Egger pitched two innings without allowing a hit with three strikeouts.

Mustang Basketball Has Four All-Conference Selections

The Tri-Valley Mustang girls and boys basketball teams had four players honor with Dak-12 All-Conference selections for the 2021-2022 season.

Paige Jewett was a second team all-conference selection.  Lauren Grinde and Ava Pearson were honorable mentions.  Cory McDonald was also an honorable mention for the boys team.

Mustang Boys Basketball Season Ends in Dell Rapids

The #7 seed Tri-Valley Mustangs gave the #2 seed Dell Rapids Quarriers all they could handle in the opening round of the Region 3A tournament on Tuesday, March 1st.  The Mustangs cut a 17-point deficit down to four points late in the fourth quarter, but the Quarriers held for a 75-67 win.

The first half was a low-scoring battle.  Dell Rapids held a 10-9 lead at the end of the first quarter.  They were able to push the lead to 10 points in the second, but the Mustangs battled back to cut the lead down to 27-24 by halftime.

Tri-Valley scored the first four points of the third quarter and led 28-27 with 7:20 left in the quarter.  The lead was short lived, however, as Dell Rapids went on a 12-2 run for a 39-30 lead with 4:45.  That lead grew to 17 points, 54-37, with just :35 left in the quarter.  Noah Haynes drained a half-court three pointer at the buzzer to make the score 54-40 heading into the final quarter.  The Mustangs kept chipping away at the lead all quarter long.  They had the deficit cut to 63-59 with 2:10 to go in the game, but unfortunately, that was as close as they could get.

Tri-Valley shot 42% (25-59) from the field, 44% (7-16) from three-point area, and 56% (10-18) from the free-throw line.  Dell Rapids was 42% (26-62) overall, 33% (6-18) on three pointers, and 74% (17-23) from the free-throw line.  Both teams had 12 total assists and six steals.

Connor Christensen had 15 points, 18 rebounds, and five blocked shots.  Cory McDonald finished with 19 points and seven rebounds.  Haynes added 18 points and six rebounds.  Brayden Oyen had seven points, and Lance DeWitt had six points.

The Mustangs season ends with an overall record of 5-16.

Regular Season Ends for Mustang Boys

The Tri-Valley Mustang boys basketball team played their final regular season game of the year at Sioux Falls Christian on Friday, February 25th.  The Mustangs fell to the Chargers 62-34.

The Chargers started the game on a 10-2 run and led 15-6 at the end of the first quarter.  The Mustangs pulled within six points, 17-11, with 6:20 to go in the second quarter, but that was as close as they would get in the game.  Sioux Falls Christian led 33-15 at halftime.  The Chargers then outscored the Mustangs 29-19 in the second half.

Tri-Valley shot 27% (12-44) overall, 2-16 on three pointers, and 47% (8-17) from the free-throw line.  Sioux Falls Christian finished 34% (21-61) from the field, 19% (4-21) from three-point area, and 80% (16-20) from the free-throw line.

Cory McDonald had a double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds.  Connor Christensen had seven points and eight rebounds.  Logan Ellison finished with five points, and Noah Haynes had four points and four rebounds.

The Mustangs finish the regular season with a record of 5-15.  They will play at Dell Rapids on Tuesday, March 1st in the opening round of the Region 3A tournament.

Three Wrestlers Find Podium for Mustangs at State

Three Tri-Valley Mustang wrestlers finished in the top eight of their weight class at the 2022 South Dakota Class B State Wrestling Tournament in Sioux Falls on Thursday, February 24th and Friday, February 25th.

Brody Dybvig placed fifth in the 126-weight class.  Dybvig had a 4-2 record in the tournament with two pins and two decision wins.  In the 5th/6th place match, Dybvig pinned Hadley Tobin of Mt Vernon/Plankinton/Corsica-Stickney at the 5:53 mark.

Isaac Nehlich placed sixth in the 220-pound class.  Nehlich finished 3-3 with all three wins coming by decision.  In the 5th/6th place match, Aiden Schoenhard of Mobridge-Pollock defeated Nehlich by a 6-3 decision.

Cole Hendrixson was eighth in the 106-pound class.  Hendrixson had a 2-3 record with one pin and one decision win.  Hendrixson was defeated by major decision by Tukker Boe of Philip Area in the 7th/8th place match.

Mason Hendrixson finished 1-2 in the tournament in the 170-pound class.  Treyson Richter (113-pound) and Lawson Loiseau (138-pound) both finished 0-2 in their two matches.

Tri-Valley Girls Season Ends, West Central Advances

The Tri-Valley Mustangs and West Central Trojans met in a SoDak 16 qualifying game for the second year in a row on Thursday, February 24th.  Last season saw the Mustangs advance to the SoDak 16, but this year, West Central will be advancing after a 68-39 win at Harrisburg High School.

The atmosphere was electric, and the two teams put on a show in the first quarter.  After an early run by the Trojans, the Mustangs get settled into their offense.  Trailing 13-12, Tri-Valley went on an 8-0 run to finish the quarter capped off by a blocked shot by Paige Jewett and a half-court buzzer-beater by Lauren Grinde.  The Mustangs led 20-13 after the first quarter.

The West Central Trojan defense then locked down the Mustangs the remainder of the game.  West Central held Tri-Valley to just two points, a layup by Grinde that gave the Mustangs a 22-21 lead.  The Trojans finished the half on a 14-0 run to lead 35-22 at halftime.  West Central scored another 23 points in the third quarter while holding Tri-Valley to just six points, and the Trojans led 58-28 going into the final quarter.

The Mustangs shot 32% (15-47) from the field, 29% (6-21) from three-point area, and 3-4 from the free-throw line. Grinde finished with 18 points and five rebounds.  Mattie Huwe had six points.  Stephanie Buchmann added five points, two rebounds, and two steals.  Hillary Hastings had three points.  Jewett finished with two points, three rebounds, two assists, and two steals.  Ava Pearson added two points and six rebounds.

West Central finished the game shooting 41% (27-66) overall, 30% (9-30) from three-point area, and 50% (5-10) from the free-throw line.  Rylee Haldeman led all scorers with 26 points and also had six rebounds, five assists, and two steals.  Addy Kramer had 15 points, eight rebounds, and four assists.  Tabor Teel finished with 12 points, seven rebounds, and three steals.  Cambell Fischer added six points and four rebounds, and Grace Harden had five points, five rebounds, and three assists.

Tri-Valley’s season ends with an overall record of 12-10.  West Central (20-2) will advance to the SoDak 16 which will be held on Thursday, March 3rd.
