Schwebach’s Buzzer-Beater Lifts Cardinals to Win

DRSM LogoMaddie Schwebach hit a game-winning shot with just four seconds remaining in the game to give the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals a 46-44 win over the Alcester-Hudson Cubs on Thursday, January 24th in Alcester.  The win was the second in a row for the Cardinals.

St Mary started quickly once again scoring 16 points in the first quarter.  The Cardinals led 16-10 after the quarter.  Both teams scored 10 points in the second quarter, and the Cardinals maintained their six point lead at halftime by a score of 26-20.  Alcester-Hudson pulled within a point by the end of the third quarter after outscoring St Mary 13-8.  The Cardinals led 34-33 heading into the final quarter.  St Mary outscored the Cubs but just one point, with Schwebach’s buzzer-beater being the difference in the game for the win.

Schwebach finished with 13 points, three rebounds, and two steals in the game.  Ella Heinitz had 14 points, two rebounds, and four steals.  Tana Harrington added six points.  Ella Griffin finished with five points, and Courtney Brown and Clare Klein both had four points each.  Alcester-Hudson was led by Kendra Jensen with 26 points.

The Cardinals (6-8) will host the Lake Preston Divers on Friday, January 25th as part of a girls and boys double-header.  Both games can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Quarrier Wrestlers Win Two More Duals

NewQuarrierLogoThe Dell Rapids Quarrier wrestling team picked up two more dual wins on Tuesday, January 22nd.  Dell Rapids wrestled Tri-Valley and West Central in another Dak XII meet held at West Central High School.

The Quarriers defeated Tri-Valley 60.0 – 18.0.  Dell Rapids then defeated West Central 42.0 – 36.0.  Andrew Weiland, Jacob Vogel, Canyon Lowman, Max Lamer, Zach McKee, Brayden Gee, Gage Carr, and Mitchell Klinkenborg all earned two wins on the night.

Dell Rapids will be in Brookings on Saturday, January 26th for the Brookings tournament.

Cardinals Fall in Overtime, Finish 4th in DVC

DRSM LogoAfter having to have the final game of the Dakota Valley Conference tournament moved around a couple of times, the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals and Colman-Egan Hawks played the 3rd/4th place game on Tuesday, January 22nd at Dell Rapids St Mary High School.

The Cardinals started out fast in the first quarter.  St Mary raced out to a 13-point lead at 15-2 with 1:15 to play in the first quarter.  Colman-Egan closed out the quarter on a 6-0 run to close the gap at 15-8.  The Hawks continued the momentum and tied the game 21-21 with 4:57 to play in the second quarter.  Colman-Egan finished the second quarter on a 9-4 run to take a 30-25 lead into halftime.

St Mary scored the first six points of the third quarter, and the Cardinals took a 31-30 lead after a three-point shot by Connar Kangas with 5:22 to play in the quarter.  The two teams traded baskets for the remainder of the third quarter.  Colman-Egan took the 41-38 advantage heading into the fourth quarter.  The two teams traded baskets and leads throughout most of the fourth quarter.  St Mary took a 53-50 lead with 1:30 to play on another three-point shot from Kangas.  Nate Tolley tied the game 15 seconds later at 53-53.  After a defensive stop, Dalton Voelker made two free throws with :24 to go to give Colman-Egan a 55-53 lead.  St Mary called a timeout, and then ran an offensive set to perfection as Ethan Geraets was wide-open and made the game-tying layup from the left block with :04 to go.  That layup sent the game into overtime.

Colman-Egan scored the first six points over the first two minutes of the overtime period to take a 61-55 lead.  Ryan Eining hit a contested shot from the left block with 1:30 to play to cut the lead to 61-57, but that was as close as St Mary would get.  The Hawks made three free-throws over the remainder of the game to seal the victory.  Connor Libis made a layup at the buzzer to make the final score 64-59.  Thw Hawks took third place in the tournament, and the Cardinals finished fourth.

Libis led the Cardinals in scoring with 34 points in the game.  Voelker led Colman-Egan with 32 points and 21 rebounds. Weston Geraets finished with 14 rebounds for the Cardinals.  St Mary finished the game shooting 37% from the field, while the Hawks shot 47% from the field.

St Mary (8-3) will host the Lake Preston Divers in a girls and boys double-header on Friday, January 25th.  Those games can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Cardinal Girls Cruise to Fifth Win

DRSMvsBal_GBB_1-21-19A huge first quarter set the tone for a big win for the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal girls on Monday, January 21st.  The Cardinals outscored the Baltic Bulldogs in every quarter of the game on their way to a 56-32 win at Dell Rapids St Mary High School.

St Mary brought the hammer early in the game.  The Cardinals got out to a 19-point lead late in the first quarter, and that was all they needed the rest of the game.  St Mary led 20-3 after the first quarter of play.  Baltic did got a little run going in the second quarter and cut the lead to 10 points at 25-15 with 2:46 to play in the first half, but St Mary closed out the quarter on an 11-3 run to take a 36-18 lead into halftime.  The Cardinal defense continued to cause problems for the Bulldogs in the second half.  Baltic was held to just 14 second half points while St Mary scored 20 points.

Nine different players scored in the game for St Mary.  Ella Heinitz finished with 16 points, nine steals, five rebounds, and four assists.  Ella Griffin had 11 points, eight rebounds, and four steals.  Maddie Schwebach tallied nine points and four rebounds.  Clare Klein added six points.  Baltic was led by Berklee Erickson with nine points.

The Cardinals (5-8) will travel to Alcester to play the Alcester-Hudson Cubs on Thursday, January 24th.

Quarrier Boys Dominant in Win over EPJ

In the second game of a girls and boys double-header on Saturday, January 19th, the Dell Rapids Quarrier boys won for the third time in a row with a 68-40 win over the Elk Point-Jefferson Huskies.

Elk Point-Jefferson held an early 2-0 lead, and the game was tied 4-4 with 6:00 to play in the first quarter and again 6-6 with 5:00 to play, but that was as close as the Huskies would get.  Dell Rapids outscored Elk Point-Jefferson 12-4 the remainder of the quarter for an 18-10 lead.  The Quarriers held the Huskies to just eight points in the second quarter as they built an 18-point lead by halftime at 36-18.

Dell Rapids was able to build on their lead in each of the last two quarters.  The Quarriers outscored Elk Point-Jefferson 19-16 in the third quarter to take a 55-34 lead into the fourth quarter.  The Quarriers then outscored the Huskies 13-6 in the final quarter.

The Quarriers finished with 48 team rebounds, 16 team assists, 11 steals, and turned the ball over just eight times.  They finished just 10-23 from the free-throw line however.

Three players finished in double figures.  Drew Van Regenmorter had 14 points, 11 rebounds, three assists, and three steals.  Logan Heim added 10 points and 17 rebounds.  Karsen Welbig also finished with 10 points in the game.  Colin Rentz had a team-high six assists.

The Quarriers (6-3) will travel to Vermillion on Thursday, January 24th for a girls and boys double-header against the Tanagers.

Quarrier Girls Get Come-from-Behind Win over EPJ, Paul Hits 1,000

The Dell Rapids Quarrier girls had to come from behind to earn a 64-54 win over the Elk Point-Jefferson Huskies on Saturday, January 19th at Dell Rapids High School.

Dell Rapids scored the first two points of the game, but Elk Point-Jefferson went on a 9-0 run to take a 9-2 lead.  The Huskies pushed the lead to nine points by the end of the first quarter at 15-6.  The Quarriers got the offense going in the second quarter as they scored 19 second quarter points, but the Huskies scores 17 points themselves and held a 32-25 lead at halftime.

The Quarrier defense the locked down the Huskie offense in the second half.  Elk Point-Jefferson was held to just nine points in the third quarter and 13 points in the fourth quarter.  Dell Rapids countered with 17 points in the third quarter and erased the seven-point halftime deficit.  The Quarriers led 42-41 heading into the final quarter.  Dell Rapids continued to roll in the fourth quarter scoring 22 points for the 10-point win.

Four players scored in double figures for Dell Rapids.  Jayda Knuppe had a game-high 18 points.  Aspen Hansen finished with 17 points.  Emma Paul ended the game with 16 points, which included her reaching the 1,000-point mark for her career, and Ravyn Hoffman tallied 10 points.  Elk Point-Jefferson was led by Lily Kempf with 14 points.

Dell Rapids (5-5) will travel to Vermillion on Thursday, January 24th.  The Quarriers will play a girls and boys double-header against the Tanagers.

Quarrier Wrestling 3rd at Dak XII Tourney

NewQuarrierLogoThe Dell Rapids Quarrier wrestling team continued their great week with a 3rd place finish at the Dak XII Conference Tournament in Vermillion on Saturday, January 19th.  Dell Rapids finished with a total of 113.5 team points.  Canton won the team title with 258.5 points, and Madison was second with 166.0 points.

The Quarriers had two wrestlers come home as conference champions.  Jacob Vogel won the 113-pound weight class, and Gage Carr won the 160-pound weight class.  Andrew Weiland, Canyon Lowman, and Aiden Moore all placed third in their respective weight class.  Max Lamer had a fourth place finish.

Dell Rapids will travel to Hartford/West Central High School for their next Dak XII meet on Tuesday, January 22nd.

Weather Delayed DVC Semifinals Unkind to Cardinals

DRSM LogoAfter having the semifinals of the Dakota Valley Conference tournament delayed by a day, the Dell Rapids St May Cardinal boys fell to the Elkton-Lake Benton Elks on Satuday, January 19th at Deubrook High School in White.

The Cardinals opened the game on fire jumping out to an 11-2 lead in the first two minutes.  The Elks responded with a 7-0 run to close the gap to 11-9.  St Mary responded with an 11-3 spurt to close out the quarter.  The Cardinals led 22-12 after the first quarter.  St Mary pushed their lead to 15 points at 33-18 with 4:30 to play in the second quarter.  The Elks then went on a 19-6 run the remainder of the quarter to close the gap to 39-37 by halftime.

Elkton-Lake Benton tied the game with 6:30 to go in the third quarter at 41-41.  The two teams traded baskets through much of the third quarter, but the Elks took a five-point lead at 54-49 with just over a minute to play in the third quarter.  Elkton-Lake Benton held that five-point lead at the end of the quarter at 56-51.  The Elks scored the first six points of the fourth quarter to extend their lead to 62-51 with 6:15 to play in the game.  The Elks held a double-digit lead for most of the quarter, but the Cardinals cut the lead down to two points at 71-69 with 1:15 to play.  The Elks, however, put the game away at the free throw line for the win.

Max Herber led the team with 26 points and 10 rebounds.  Weston Geraets finished with 14 points.  Elkton-Lake Benton was led by Matthew Nibbe with 16 points and Aiden Erickson with 15 points.

St Mary (8-2) will play in the 3rd/4th place game on Monday, January 21st in Arlington.  The Cardinals will play Colman-Egan with a 6:00 p.m. tipoff.

First Quarter Sets Tone for Quarrier Win

Staring the game on a 10-0 run was enough for the Dell Rapids Quarriers to get a Dak XII Conference win over the Madison Bulldogs on Thursday, January 17th in Madison.  Dell Rapids held on to beat the Quarriers 68-65.

Dell Rapids started the game on the 10-0 run and led by as many as 15 points in the first quarter.  Madison cut the lead to single digits by the end of the first quarter at 23-16.  The Bulldogs cut into the lead a little more in the second quarter, and Dell Rapids led by just five points at a score of 36-31.  The two teams played even basketball much of the second half as Dell Rapids never let go of the lead.  The Quarriers led 52-45 heading into the fourth quarter.  Even though Madison outscored Dell Rapids 20-16 in the final quarter, Dell Rapids held on for the win.

The Quarriers finished the game shooting 49% (27-55) from the field, 26% (5-19) from three-point area, and 47% (9-19) from the free-throw line.  Madison was 41% (26-63) from the field, 50% (10-20) from three-point area, and 60% (3-5) from the free-throw line.  The Quarriers out-rebounded Madison 39-31 in the game.  Dell Rapids also had a 14 turnovers, nine team assists, and five steals.

All five starters for Dell Rapids finished in double figures.  Colin Rentz had 17 points, nine rebounds, four assists, and two steals.  Logan Ellingson had 16 points and two steals.  Logan Heim finished with 12 points and 15 rebounds.  Drew Van Regenmorter tallied 12 points, seven rebounds, and three assists.  Connor Rentz added 11 points and two assists.

Dell Rapids (5-3) will host another Dax XII opponent on Saturday, January 19th.  The Quarriers will host Elk Point-Jefferson as part of a girls and boys double-header.  Both games can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Quarrier Wrestling Earns Four Wins During Week

The Dell Rapids Quarrier wrestling team picked up for dual wins during the week.  The Quarriers traveled to Dakota Valley High School on Tuesday, January 15th and hosted a triangular on Thursday, January 17th.

On Tuesday Dell Rapids earned a 60-18 win over Dakota Valley and a 54-21 win over Elk Point-Jefferson.  On Thursday, the Quarriers got a 51-28 win over Sioux Falls O’Gorman and 49-18 win over Garretson.

Dell Rapids will travel to Vermillion on Saturday, January 19th for the Dak XII Conference Tournament.
