Quarrier Volleyball Finishes Seventh at Sanford Pentagon Tourney

The Dell Rapids Quarrier volleyball team placed seventh in the Red Division of the Sanford Pentagon Tournament on Saturday, September 25th.  The Quarriers played four matches finishing 2-2 on the day.

The Quarriers opened the tournament with a pool play match against Freeman.  Freeman won the first set 27-25, but the Quarriers took the next two sets, 25-21 and 25-17, to win the match.  Sophi Randall had nine kills, eight blocks, and 13 set assists.  JoJo Henry finished with seven kills, four ace serves, three blocks, and four digs.  Kylee Fiddelke and Kenzie Garry both had five kills.  Riley Hill added 15 set assists, 13 digs, and four ace serves.  Lauryn Kloth had eight blocks, Garry had seven, and Fiddelke had six blocks.  Emma Molskness finished with six digs.

In their second match, Dell Rapids lost to Parkston in straight sets by scores of 25-17 and 25-19.  Randall had seven kills, and Henry finished with four.  Henry also had a team-high six blocks.  Kloth finished with five, and Randall, Fiddelke, and Garry all had four blocks each.  Fiddelke had a team-high eight digs, and Hill led the team with six set assists.

Sioux Valley then defeated the Quarriers in straight sets as well.  The final scores were 25-23 and 25-22 in favor of the Cossacks.  Kloth and Randall both had a team-high six kills.  Henry had five kills, and Garry finished with four.  Hill and Henry both had two ace serves.  Randall finished with six blocks and four digs.  Hill tallied seven digs, while Kloth had five.  Hill also had a team-high 13 set assists, and Randall added 10.

The Quarriers then finished the day with a straight-set win over Great Plains Lutheran to finish seventh in the bracketed portion of the tournament.  Dell Rapids won by set scores of 25-14 and 25-20.  Randall had a team-high eight kills along with three ace serves and nine set assists.  Henry had five ace serves.  Hill led the team with 14 digs.  Molskness and Henry both had five digs.  Hill also had nine set assists.

Dell Rapids (10-8) will travel to McCook Central/Montrose on Tuesday, September 28th and then will host Lennox on Thursday, September 30th.

Gaspar’s Four Touchdowns Help Lead Cardinals over ORR Raiders

Nic Gaspar found the endzone four times to help lead the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals to a 34-6 win over the Oldham-Ramona/Rutland Raiders at Rickeman Field on Friday, September 24th.

St Mary struck first when CJ Smith scored on a one-yard quarterback sneak with 7:26 to play in the opening quarter.  That was the only score of the quarter, and the Cardinals lead 6-0.   Gaspar’s first touchdown was on a three-yard run with 11:55 to play in the second quarter.  He also scored the two-point conversion to make the score 14-0.   The Raiders scored about four minutes later.  Will Matson had an eight-yard run with 7:47 to go.  The two-point conversion was no good, and the Cardinals led 14-6 at halftime.

Gaspar’s second touchdown came at the halfway point of the third quarter.  With 5:35 to go, Gaspar scored on another three-yard touchdown run to push the lead to 20-6.  Gaspar added a one-yard score on the first play of the fourth quarter to extend the St Mary lead to 26-6.  The final touchdown for Gaspar was at the 6:03 mark of the fourth quarter.  He scored on a 43-yard run.  Smith connected with Gabe Lindeman on the two-point conversion to make the score 34-6.

The Cardinals finished with 340 yards of offense, 280 rushing yards and 60 passing yards.  The Raiders had 152 yards of offense, 131 rushing yards and 21 passing yards.

Ty Brown had 21 carries for 119 yards.  Gaspar finished with 16 carries for 90 yards and four touchdowns.  Tate Bunkers had five carries for 35 yards, and Lucas Flemmer had 8 carries for 24 yards.  Smith was 3-8 passing for 60 yards.  Gaspar also had two catches for 56 yards.  Lindeman had a catch for four yards. 

Lindeman led the team in tackles with nine and two sacks.  John Pica had eight tackles with a forced fumble and recovery.  Noah Olund finished with seven tackles.

Head coach Ross Flemmer said, “I felt that all of our kids played hard.  They kept fighting and made a lot of big plays happen throughout the game. Our defensive line played exceptionally well and applied pressure throughout the whole game. I felt our team improved a lot these past couple weeks, and it showed tonight.”

St Mary (3-2) will travel to Estelline to play the Estelline/Hendricks Redhawks on Saturday, October 2nd.

Late Touchdown Lifts Dell Rapids over Sioux Falls Christian

The Dell Rapids Quarriers got a late touchdown in the fourth quarter to win a back-and-forth game against the Sioux Falls Christian Chargers on Friday, September 24th.

Landon Ruesink scored the go-ahead touchdown with about 5:45 to play in the game.  Austin Henry scored the two-point conversion to give Dell Rapids a 27-22 a lead they would not relinquish the rest of the game.

Dell Rapids held the lead throughout the first half.  Henry scored on a one-yard run in the first quarter, and Aiden Boechler kicked the extra point for an yearly 7-0 lead.  The Chargers got a 70-yard run by Isaiah Young, but the extra point was missed.  The Quarriers added to their lead on a 24-yard pass from Henry to Ruesink for a touchdown.  The two-point conversion was good, and Dell Rapids led 15-6.  Sioux Falls Christian would score again before the half and also make a two-point conversion.  Dell Rapids led 15-14 at halftime.

The Quarriers again extended their lead in the third quarter on a three-yard touchdown run by Sutton Williams.  This time the two-point conversion was no good, and the lead was 21-14 after three quarters.  The Chargers took the lead on the first play of the fourth quarter.  They scored on a one-yard run and then made the two-point conversion for a 22-21 lead.  The Charger lead would only last about six minutes before Ruesink’s go-ahead touchdown.

Dell Rapids had 252 yards of total offense, 148 passing yards and 104 rushing yards.  The Chargers had 297 yards of offense, 152 passing yards and 145 rushing yards.  The Quarriers were 5-10 on third down attempts, while the Chargers were 4-9.

Ruesink had 12 carries for 43 yards and a touchdown.  Henry had seven carries for 44 yards and a touchdown.   Brayden Pankonen had eight carries for 14 yards, and Williams had three carries for three yards and a touchdown.  Henry was 7-14 passing for 148 yards and a touchdown.  Ruesink had three catches for 85 yard and a touchdown.  Camden Justice caught two passes for 42 yards, and Pankonen had a catch for 15 yards. 

Aiden Geraets had nine tackles.  Pankonen and Ian Mason both had seven tackles each.  Chase Jones finished with five tackles.  Treyse Eastman and Will Jaton each had four tackles.  Aiden Boechler and Ruesink had three tackles apiece.

Dell Rapids (4-1) has now won four in a row and will host the Vermillion Tanagers on Friday, October 1st.

Garretson Girls Soccer Season Ends at Sioux Falls Christian

The Garretson Blue Dragon girls soccer team had their season come to an end on the road on Thursday, September 23rd.  The Blue Dragons fell to the Sioux Falls Christian Chargers 2-1.

Neither team was able to get a goal in the first half of play.  The two goals scored by the Chargers in the second half were just enough to get the win and end the season for Garretson.

The Blue Dragons finished their season with a 2-10-1 record and eighth in the Class A seed points.  Only the top six teams qualify for the playoffs.

Quarriers Win Match in Flandreau

The Dell Rapids Quarriers bounced back from a five-set loss to Garretson with a straight set win over the Flandreau Fliers on Thursday, September 23rd.  Dell Rapids won by scores of 25-16, 25-15, and 25-19 in Flandreau.

After an 8-8 tie in the first set, the Quarriers went on a 9-1 run for a 17-9 lead.  Flandreau never threatened the remainder of the set.  Dell Rapids had only a two-point lead through the midway point at 13-11, but the Quarriers finished the second half of the set on a 12-4 run for the win.   Dell Rapids got out to a 7-1 lead in the third set.  The Quarriers extended the lead to 21-9.  The Fliers went on a 10-3 run to pull within five at 24-19, but Dell Rapids stopped the rally and won the match.

Sophi Randall and JoJo Henry each had eight kills.  Kenzie Garry had six kills, and Lauryn Kloth had five.  Riley Hill had a team-high seven ace serves.  Kloth had five blocks, while Garry finished with three.  Henry led the team with nine digs.  Randall had seven digs, Garry and Hill each had six, and Lexi Ingalls finished with give.  Hill also led the team with 18 set assists.

Arlington Wins Battle of the Cardinals in Volleyball Matchup

Arlington defeated Dell Rapids St Mary in the “Battle of Cardinals” at St Mary High School on Thursday, September 23rd.  Arlington won in straight sets by scores of 25-14, 27-25, and 25-8.

Arlington got out to a quick seven-point lead early in the first set.  They built a 12-5 lead, but St Mary rallied for six straight points to cut the lead to 12-11.  An Arlington timeout stopped the momentum St Mary had gained.  Arlington finished the set on a 13-3 run to win 25-14.

The second set started much closer as the two were tied 4-4 and then again at 9-9.  The teams traded points until the set was tied again at 14-14.  Arlington went on a 4-0 run for an 18-14 lead, one of the biggest of the set.  St Mary rallied for six straight points and took a 20-18 lead.  St Mary led 23-21 and 24-23, but Arlington scored two in a row to take a 25-24 advantage.  St Mary tied the set at 25-25, but Arlington scored the final two points to steal the set 27-25.

That late rally by Arlington gave them all the momentum heading into the third set.  Arlington scored the first three points and built a 13-3 lead.  They continued to roll from there winning the final set 25-8.

Brianna Griffin had four kills and five blocks in the match.  Courtney Brown finished with 19 digs and three kills.  Maya Heinitz had five digs, two blocks, and three kills.  Ella Griffin finished with five set assists and three blocks.  Brianna Lindeman had seven digs and three set assists.  Madala Hanson added five set assists, and Jaycee Tebay led the team with two ace serves.

St Mary (9-3) will travel to Hills-Beaver Creek, MN on Monday, September 27th and then host Baltic on Tuesday, September 28th.

Quarrier Cheer Team Places 2nd at Sioux Valley

The Dell Rapids Quarrier competitive cheer team competed in the six-team Sioux Valley Invite on Thursday, September 23rd.

Dell Rapids finished second with a total of 124.5 points.  Sioux Valley placed first with 181 points.  Deubrook was third just a half point behind Dell Rapids with 124 points.  Brookings cheer team placed fourth followed by Redfield and then Arlington-Lake Preston.

The Quarriers will be at the O’Gorman Invite at O’Gorman High School on Tuesday, September 28th for their next competition.

Quarriers and Cardinals Compete at Dell Rapids Cross Country Invite

Both the Dell Rapids Quarriers and Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal cross country teams participated in the Dell Rapids Invite at Rocky Run Golf Course on Wednesday, September 22nd.

The Quarrier girls finished sixth as a team with 80 points.  The Cardinals were eighth with 108 points.

Garretson Survives Upset-Minded Quarriers

The Dell Rapids Quarrier volleyball team had one thing on their mind on Tuesday, September 21st, and that was to get a statement win over the #4 ranked Garretson Blue Dragons.  The Quarriers did just about that, but the Blue Dragons held off the Quarriers for a five-set win.

After an early 7-7 tie in the opening set, the Quarriers gained some momentum.  Dell Rapids went on an 8-2 run for a 15-9 lead.  The lead grew to 10 points at 22-12.  Garretson couldn’t overcome the lead, and Dell Rapids took the first set 25-17.

The Quarriers used that energy to build an early 6-1 lead in the second set.  The Blue Dragons were able to stop the Quarrier run and go on one of their own.  Garretson responded with a 9-1 run for a 10-7 lead.  Dell Rapids was able to regain the lead at 15-14 and push that lead to three at 17-14.  The set was once again tied at 19-19 before Garretson finished on a 6-2 advantage for a 25-21 win.

The Blue Dragons were able to build a 12-6 lead at the midway point of the third set.  The Quarriers were able to cut the lead in half at 15-12, but that was as close as they could get.  Garretson went on an 8-1 run for a 10-point advantage, 23-13, and won the third set 25-15 for a 2-1 match lead.

Garretson again got out to a lead in the fourth set, this time at 12-7.  Dell Rapids rallied to tie the score at 14-14.  The Quarriers then went on a 6-2 run for a 20-16 advantage.  Dell Rapids would not lose the lead and won the fourth set 25-21 to force a fifth and final set.

The fifth set went back-and-forth early.  The score was tied at each point up to 5-5.  The Quarriers took the first lead of more than one point and scored five straight for a 10-5 lead.  Garretson called a timeout and were able to regroup.  After the timeout, the Blue Dragons scored eight straight points for a 13-10 lead.  Dell Rapids was only able to get it 14-12 as Garretson took the set 15-12 to win the match.

Sophi Randall had eight kills, two ace serves, 20 blocks, 11 digs, and 12 set assists.  Kenzie Garry finished the match with nine kills, seven blocks, and five digs.  JoJo Henry added seven kills, three ace serves, two blocks, and nine digs.  Riley Hill finished with four kills, four ace serves, five blocks, 11 digs, and 17 set assists.  Lexi Ingalls had 11 digs on defense.  Lauryn Kloth had five kills, 10 blocks, and five digs.  Kylee Fiddelke had two kills and seven blocks.

Dell Rapids (7-6) will travel to Flandreau on Thursday, September 23rd.

Garretson Girls Soccer Falls to Dakota Valley in Final Home Match

The Garretson Blue Dragon girls soccer team held their final home match of the 2021 season on Tuesday, September 21st.  The Blue Dragons hosted the Dakota Valley Panthers, and the Panthers won the match, 2-0.

The first goal for the Panthers came late in the first half.  With 3:15 remaining, Dakota Valley got behind the Garretson defense on a break-away and got the goal for a 1-0 lead.  The Panthers scored a second-half goal with 11:07 to play to make the score 2-0.

Garretson currently had a 2-9-1 record and will finish their season on the road at Sioux Falls Christian on Thursday, September 23rd.
