Quarrier Volleyball Takes First in Canton

NewDRLogoThe Dell Rapids Quarrier volleyball team won C-Hawk Invitational Tournament on Saturday, August 26th, in Canton.  Dell Rapids finished first in Pool B with a 2-1 record, and then the Quarriers went on to defeat Lennox in the championship match.

The Quarriers defeated West Sioux by scores of 25-23, 25-18.  Dell Rapids also defeated Garretson 25-23, 25-17.  The Quarriers fell to West Lyon by scores of 21-25, 13-25, but Dell Rapids won Pool B on tiebreakers with the Quarriers, West Lyon, and West Sioux all finishing with a 2-1 pool play record.  Dell Rapids then went on to defeat Lennox in straight sets in the championship match.

Dell Rapids (3-2) will travel to Elk Point-Jefferson to play the Huskies on Tuesday, August 29th.

Cardinal Football Gets First Win of Season

DRSMvsEstelline_FB_8-26-17_2The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals strung together 32 straight points over two days to earn a 46-20 win over the Estelline Redmen in football action.  The game started on Friday, August 25th, in Estelline but only last seven minutes before the game had to be suspended due to lightning and heavy rain.  The Cardinals led 8-0 by that point.  The game was resumed at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 26th, and St Mary scored three more touchdowns in the first half to take a 32-0 lead over Estelline.  The Redmen got a score late in the second quarter to make the halftime score 32-6.

The Cardinals possessed the ball for most of the third quarter scoring two more touchdowns to take a 46-6 lead into the fourth quarter.  Estelline picked up two late touchdowns in the game for the 46-20 final score.

The Cardinals finished with 324 total yards, 287 rushing yards and 37 passing yards.  Estelline was held to 185 total yards of offense.  Connor Libis finished the game with nine carries for 72 yards and a touchdown.  Luke Brown had four carries for 54 yards and a touchdown.  Ethan Geraets had seven carries for 38 yards and a touchdown, while Westen Geraets six carries for 39 yards.  Tate Hansen tallied four carries for 28 yards and two touchdowns.  Brown was 2-5 passing for 37 yards and a touchdown along with three two-point conversions.  E. Geraets had two catches for 37 yards and a touchdown.  Defensively the Cardinals were led by W. Geraets with eight tackles.  Eli Longville had 7.5 tackles and a sack.  Libis finished with five tackles, and Logan Wolles had four tackles and a blocked punt. DRSMvsEstelline_FB_8-26-17_1

“The boys played hard this week.  Our Offensive and defensive lines really set the tone and did a great job,” said head coach Ross Flemmer.

St Mary will have their first home game of the season on Friday, September 1st, when they host Colman-Egan at Rickeman Field at 7:00 p.m.  The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Quarrier Cross Country Starts Season in Beresford

NewDRLogoThe Dell Rapids girls and boys cross country teams started their 2017 season at the Beresford Invite at The Bridges Golf Course on Friday, August 25th.  The girls team finished ninth with a team score of 114.  Sioux Falls Christian placed first with 44 points, Beresford was second with 56 points, and Gayville-Volin was third with 72 points.  The Quarrier boys team placed 11th with 200 points.  Sioux Falls Christian was first with 33 points, Sioux Falls Lincoln was second with 38 points, and Lennox placed third with 63 points.

The Quarriers will run in the McCook Invite at McCook Country Club on Tuesday, August 29th.

Alcester-Hudson Defeats Cardinal Volleyball in Opener

DRSM LogoThe Alcester-Hudson Cubs defeated the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals in straight sets in the season opener on Thursday, August 24th, at Dell Rapids St Mary High School.  The Cubs won by scores of 25-21, 25-10, 25-15.

Cassie Mullaney led the team with seven kills.  Maddie Schwebach finished with six kills, and Rhiannon Glazier and Veronica Beck each had five kills.  Schwebach led the team with four blocks, and Adyn Heinricy finished with 15 digs.  Cassy Geraets had 16 set assists, while Ella Heinitz finished with 10 assists.

The Cardinals will play in the Estelline Tournament on Saturday, August 26th.

Quarrier Volleyball Falls in Close Season Opener

NewDRLogoThe Dell Rapids Quarrier volleyball team lost a close match to open their season against the West Central Trojans on Thursday, August 24th, in Dell Rapids.  The Trojans beat the Quarriers by scores of 25-19, 23-25, 25-23, 25-23.

Brooke Klein led the team with 14 service points, including four aces, and 21 digs.  Jayda Knuppe had nine kills and a block.  Sydney Stofferahn added seven kills.  Mackenzie Grisham had 24 digs defensively for the Quarriers, and Hannah Fletcher had 26 set assists in the match.  The Trojans were led by Erin Kueter with nine kills, Kali Nelson and Ashlyn McDonald with seven kills each, and Alyssa Ideker with 12 digs.

Dell Rapids will be heading to Canton for the Canton Tournament on Saturday, August 26th.

Badgers Send Cardinals Home with Season Opening Loss

DRSMvsALP_FB_8-18-17The Arlington/Lake Preston Badgers scored early and often on their way to a 54-26 win over the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals on Friday, August 18th, in Lake Preston.  It was the first football game of 2017 season for both schools.

The Badgers scored on the third play of the game when Devon Heuer connected with Allen Strande for a 51-yard touchdown pass.  Arlington/Lake Preston scored on their next two possessions in the first quarter.  Heuer had a one-yard touchdown run and a 29-yard touchdown pass to Will Perry.  The Cardinals got the offense going in their third drive of the game.  Payton Park scored on a five-yard touchdown run to put St Mary on the board with :22 to go in the first quarter.  The Badgers scored two more times in the second quarter on a 40-yard touchdown run by Heuer and a 29-yard touchdown run by Gavin Holland.  Arlington/Lake Preston led 34-8 at halftime.

The Badgers also scored first in the third quarter.  With 8:42 to go in the third quarter, Heuer connected with Byron Bumann on a 70-yard pass for the score.  St Mary scored with 3:53 to go in the quarter on a 13-yard touchdown pass from Luke Brown to Ethan Geraets.  Arlington/Lake Preston would add another score with 2:58 to go in the third quarter on a 45-yard run by Holland.  The Cardinals scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter.  Brown threw a 17-yard touchdown pass to Weston Geraets with 7:15 to go in the game.  Austin Greene-LeBrun also had a touchdown run late in the game.

St Mary will be on the road again for their next game on Friday, August 25th.  The Cardinals will travel to Estelline for a 7:00 p.m. kickoff.  The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Dell Rapids Boys Golf Starts 2017 Season

NewDRLogoThe Dell Rapids Quarrier boys golf team started their 2017 season at the West Central Early Bird Invitational on Monday, August 14th.  Thirteen total schools competed in the event held at Central Valley Golf Course in Hartford.

Dell Rapids finished 11th as a team with a team score of 389.  Dakota Valley won the team title with a team score of 327.  Beresford was second with 330, and Tea Area placed third with 334.  Jacob Lee of Parkston was the top individual finisher with a round of 71.  Brock Murphy of Tea Area was second with 72.  Payton Borah of Beresford, Tanner Hensley of Dakota Valley, and Heston Jorgenson of Madison all finished with a 79.

Mason Schmidt finished with the low round for Dell Rapids.  He shot an 88 on the day.  Karsen Welbig had a round of 95.  Zach McKee and Brandon Kubly both fired a 103.  Lucas Berg had a 119, and Jack Weber finished with a round of 121.

The Quarriers will be in action again on Wednesday, August 16th, at the Dakota Valley Invite at Two Rivers Golf Course.

Dell Rapids Post 65 Baseball Earns Postseason Awards

DellsBaseballLogoDell Rapids Post 65 was crowned champion of the East River Baseball League with a perfect 10-0 record. Other teams included McCook/Minor (9-1), Garretson (4-4), Volga (4-5), Humboldt/Hartford (3-5), Lennox (3-4), Madison (3-7) and Colton (0-10).

Multiple Dell Rapids Post 65 Legion baseball players received postseason recognition due their contributions during the season.

Brett Mogen was named MVP for the East River League. Mogen had a .480 batting average and 11 RBI. He also was 3-0 as a pitcher with 29 strikeouts. He had an ERA of .98 in 18 1/3 innings.

Nate McKee earned the Silver Slugger batting award given to the top hitter. McKee led the league with a .581 batting average and drove in 18 runs.

Cole Gassman from McCook/Miner earned the Cy Young Award as the top pitcher in the league. He had a 2-0 pitching record in 20 1/3 innings while striking out 37 hitters. His ERA was 0.34.

Three Dell Rapids players participated in the State American Legion Baseball All-Star game August 1 in Clark, SD. Mogen, McKee and Josh Roemen were selected from nominations across the state as All-State players. Eric Klein and Casey Hansen were chosen as Honorable Mention All-State players.

Dell Rapids finished the season with a 20-4 record. Team members included Brett Mogen, Nate McKee, Josh Roemen, Keegan Miller, Eric Klein, Seth Andersen, Casey Hansen, Carter Gullickson, Elijah Story, Adrian Juba, Ethan Brobjorg, Logan Ruesink, Matt Gillogly, Tyson Dahler and Lealand Randel.

Dell Rapids 15/16 Teeners Finish Season in Beresford

DellsBaseballLogoThe Dell Rapids 15/16 Teener team finished their 2017 season at the 2017 15/16 State A VFW Tournament in Beresford on Friday, August 5th, and Saturday, August 6th.  Dell Rapids lost both of their games in the state tournament.

In their opening game of the tournament, Dell Rapids lost to West Central by a score of 13-3.  West Central scored early in the game with four runs in the bottom of the first inning.  Dell Rapids got one run back in the top of the second to make it a 4-1 game.  West Central, however, scored three runs in the second inning, three more in the third, and two runs in the fourth to take a 12-1 lead after four innings of play.  Dell Rapids scored two times in the top of the fifth inning, but West Central scored a run in the bottom of the inning to end the game on the 10-run rule.

Dell Rapids then played Milbank on Saturday, August 6th, in a back-and-forth game.  Milbank scored first with three runs.  Dell Rapids closed the gap in the top of the third with two runs, and Dell Rapids trailed Milbank 3-2 after three innings of play.  Milbank added two runs in the bottom of the fourth to push their lead to 5-2.  Dell Rapids was able to tie the game in the top of the fifth with two runs, and then Dell Rapids took the lead in the top of the sixth inning with two runs.  Milbank scored one run in the bottom of the sixth, and Dell Rapids led 7-6 heading to the final inning of the game.  Dell Rapids was unable to score in the top of the seventh, and Milbank was able to push across two runs in the bottom of the inning for the win.

Dell Rapids finished with a 9-5 record in the I-29 League this season and finished runner-up in the Southeast Regional to qualify for the state tournament.

PBR and Mudcats Headed to State Amateur Tournament

PBRLogoDell Rapids PBR and Dell Rapids Mudcats are both headed to the 2017 State B Amateur Baseball Tournament in Mitchell August 2nd through 13th.  Dell Rapids PBR earned the final spot from District 4B with an 8-6 win over Colman on Saturday, July 30th.  Dell Rapids Mudcats claimed the District 4B title with a 13-12 win over Madison.

PBR took an early 4-o lead over Colman after the first two innings of play, but the Colman A’s scored five times in the fifth inning to take a 5-4 lead.  PBR, however, answered with three runs in the top of the sixth to take the lead for good on their way to the 8-6 win.

The Mudcats won in a three-run ninth inning in a high-scoring back-and-forth game against Madison.  The Mudcats had an early MudcatsLogo5-2 lead after the first two innings.  Madison tied the game in the fourth inning at 5-5, and then held a 7-6 lead after five innings of play.  Both teams scored in the sixth inning and the game was tied 9-9.  Madison took the lead in the top of the eighth, but the Mudcats answered in the bottom of the inning to tie the game at 10-10.  Madison’s Matt Burpee hit a two-run home run in the top of the ninth inning to give Madison a 12-10 lead heading to the bottom of the ninth.  The Mudcats loaded the bases, and Grant Olson drove in two runs with a double to tie the game.  Jimmy Bauer had the game-winning RBI single to give the Mudcats the win.

Dell Rapids PBR will kick off the state tournament against Winner/Colome on Wednesday, August 2nd, at 5:30 p.m.  The Mudcats will play on Saturday, August 5th, at 1:00 p.m. against Dimock/Emery.
