Cardinals Cruise to Victory over Centerville

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals jumped out to a 13-2 lead in the first four minutes of the game and never looked back as they cruised to a 66-25 win over the Centerville Tornadoes on Tuesday, February 6th at Dell Rapids St Mary High School.

St Mary continued the high-energy defense and offense as they lead 23-9 after the first quarter.  The lead grew to 43-15 by halftime for the Cardinals.  The St Mary defense then held the Tornadoes to just six points in the third quarter and grew their lead to 60-21.  The Cardinals then outscored Centerville 6-4 in the final quarter.

Connor Libis led the team in scoring with 22 points and also pulled down nine rebounds.  Max Herber had nine points and eight rebounds.  Weston Geraets added nine points and six rebounds.  Luke Brown also finished with nine points.  Josh Eining had six points, while Ethan Geraets had four points.

The Cardinals (9-7) continue their home stand when the host the Elkton-Lake Benton Elks on Thursday, February 8th.

Quarrier’s Tough 2nd Half Defense Leads to Win

NewDRLogoAfter trailing at the end of the first and second quarters, the Dell Rapids Quarrier girls held the Mt Vernon/Plankinton Titans to just 16 second half points in a 55-38 come-from-behind win at Mt Vernon on Tuesday, February 6th.

The Titans led for most of the first quarter and lead 12-10 at the quarter break.  Both teams scored 10 points as Mt Vernon/Plankinton continued to lead by two points at halftime by a score of 22-20.  Dell Rapids got both the offense and defense working together in the third quarter.  The Quarriers outscores the Titans 20-7 to take a 40-29 lead after three quarters of play.  Dell Rapids continued the surge in the fourth quarter by holding the Titans to nine fourth quarter points.

Four Quarriers finished with double figures in the game.  Jayda Knuppe led the team with 16 points and eight rebounds.  Emma Paul had 10 points and 10 rebounds.  Sydney Stofferahn and Arial Hoffman both finished with 10 points and four rebounds each.

Dell Rapids (11-5) will hit the road again on Friday, February 9th when they travel to Dakota Valley High School for a girls and boys double-header against the Panthers.

Cardinal Girls Make it Two in a Row

DRSMvsGV_GBB_2-5-18Three players finished in double figures for the St Mary Cardinals in a 51-47 win over the Gayville-Volin Raiders on Monday, February 5th.  The Cardinals have won two in a row and five of their last seven games.

St Mary held a slim three-point lead after the first quarter of play at 10-7.  The Cardinals had a 21-19 late in the second quarter, and then closed out the half on a 5-0 run to lead 26-19 at halftime.  The Raiders started the third quarter on their own 5-0 run to pull within two points at 26-24.  The Cardinals bounced back and increased their lead to seven points by the end of the third quarter at 43-36.  The St Mary lead was at 11 points with 3:00 to go in the game at 49-38.  Gayville-Volin closed to within three points at 50-47 with :54 left in the game.  Adyn Heinricy made a free throw with :03.2 left on the clock to increase the Cardinal lead to four points and the win.

Sydney Cook had a double-double for the Cardinals with 16 points and 17 rebounds.  Ella Heinitz had 17 points and three rebounds.  Maddie Schwebach had 10 points and five rebounds in the game.

St Mary (8-9) will host Elkton-Lake Benton on Friday, February 9th.

MCM Steals Win on Fourth Quarter Run Against Cardinals

DRSM LogoThe McCook Central/Montrose Fighting Cougars rode a 17-0 run in the fourth quarter to a 54-43 win over the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals on Saturday, February 3rd in Salem.

The two teams went back-and-forth throughout the first quarter.  The Fighting Cougars held a slim 18-16 lead at the first quarter break.  The Cardinals were held down offensively in the second quarter.  McCook Central/Montrose held St Mary to just six points and built a 32-22 lead by halftime.  The Cardinals were able to make the necessary adjustments in the locker room and opened the third quarter on a 12-1 run to take a 34-33 lead.  The Cardinals grew that lead to 41-35 by the end of the third quarter.  St Mary led 43-37 with 3:56 to play in the game, but that’s when the Fighting Cougars closed out the game on the 17-0 run for the win.

St Mary finished the night shooting 28% from the field, 24% from three-point area, and 60% from the free-throw line.  The Cardinals had a total of 32 team rebounds, six steals, and turned the ball over 10 times.

Luke Brown finished the night with 17 points, three rebounds, and an assist.  Connor Libis added 12 points, seven rebounds, and an assist.  West Geraets had six points and six rebounds, and Max Herber finished with four points and three rebounds.

St Mary (8-7) will host Centerville on Tuesday, February 6th.  The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Quarrier Girls Win on Back-to-Back Days

NewDRLogoThe Dell Rapid Quarriers won their second game in as many days when they defeated the Milbank Area Bulldogs at the Dak-12/NEC Classic in Madison on Saturday, February 3rd.  The Quarriers had a come-from-behind 60-54 victory over the Bulldogs.

Milbank held an early four-point lead throughout the first half of play.  The Bulldogs led 21-17 after the first quarter and kept that lead at 39-35 heading into halftime.  Dell Rapids responded in the third quarter by outscoring Milbank 12-5 to take a 47-44 lead.  The Quarriers then outscored the Bulldogs 13-10 in the final quarter for the win.

Dell Rapids finished the game shooting 40% from the field, 30% from three-point area, and 60% from the free-throw line.  They had a total of 24 team rebounds, four steals, seven assists, and turned the ball over 10 times.

Jayda Knuppe finished with 17 points in the game.  Aspen Hansen had 11 points.  Sydney Stofferahn had 10 points and five rebounds.

The Quarriers (11-5) will travel to Mt Vernon to play the Mt Vernon/Plankinton Titans in a girls and boys double-header.

Five in a Row for Quarrier Boys

NewDRLogoThe Dell Rapids Quarrier won their fifth game in a row after a 77-55 victory over the Tri-Valley Mustangs.  The Quarriers also honored their seniors prior to the game on Friday, February 2nd at Dell Rapids High School.

Tri-Valley was able to get the first field goal of the game two minutes into it on a three-point shot by Dylan Huwe.  Dell Rapids was held scoreless until the 5:06 mark.  Mason Schmidt made one-of-two free throws to put the Quarriers on the board.  Schmidt gave Dell Rapids the lead on a three-point basket with 4:23 left in the first quarter.  Dell Rapids never trailed from that point in the game.  The Quarriers led 16-11 after the first quarter.  Dell Rapids extended their lead to 14 points by halftime at 39-25.  The Quarriers added to their lead in both third and fourth quarters.  Dell Rapids led 57-39 after the third quarter and then outscored Tri-Valley 20-16 in fourth quarter for the win.

Three players finished in double figures led by Jeffrey Schuch.  Schuch finished with a double-double scoring 19 points, pulling down 13 rebounds, and had four blocked shots .  Schmidt had 18 points.  Logan Heim tallied 11 points and had eight rebounds.  Carson Rentz and Elijah Story both had five assists in the game.

Dell Rapids (11-4) will travel to Mt Vernon to play the Mt Vernon/Plankinton Titans on Tuesday, February 6th as part of a girls and boys double header.

The 2017-2018 seniors are Carson Rentz, Ethan Faux, Elijah Story, Mason Schmidt, Jeffrey Schuch, and Caleb Kirschenmann.

Quarrier Girls Bounce Back with Dak-12 Win

NewDRLogoThe Dell Rapids Quarrier girls basketball team got back into the win column with a Dak-12 Conference win against Tri-Valley on Friday, February 2nd on Senior Night.  The Quarriers won 45-39 over the Mustangs at Dell Rapids High School in the final regular-season home game.

After a slow start and being held scoreless for the first three and a half minutes, the Quarriers offense got rolling and took a 13-9 lead after the first quarter of play.  Dell Rapids pushed their lead to eight points at 21-13, but the Mustangs outscored Dell Rapids 6-1 over the final 2:30 of the half to cut the lead to 22-19 by halftime.

Tri-Valley cut the lead to 28-27 with 4:00 to play in the third quarter.  Dell Rapids held the Mustangs scoreless the remainder of the quarter and push their lead back to four points at 31-27 heading into the fourth quarter.  Tri-Valley scored the first four points of the fourth quarter to tie the game at 31-31.  Emma Paul pulled down an offense rebound and scored to give the Quarriers a 33-31 lead with 6:15 to go in the game.  Dell Rapids then went on an 8-1 run to lead 41-32 with 3:40 to go and held on down the stretch for the win.

Paul led Dell Rapids with 16 points.  Regan Stone added six points.  Aspen Hansen, Kaylee Hennen, Sydney Stofferahn, and Arial Hoffman all had five points each.

The Quarriers (10-5) will play Milbank Area on Saturday, February 3rd in Madison at the Dak-12/NEC Classic.  The game will be played at 4:00 p.m. in the auxiliary gym.

The 2017-2018 seniors are Tiffanie Dorale, Kaylee Hennen, Regan Stone, Sydney Stofferahn, Kali Graham, and Arial Hoffman.

Big Plays Seal 2OT Victory for Cardinal Girls

DRSM LogoAdyn Heinricy made a big three point shot to give the St Mary Cardinals a four-point lead, and Maddie Schwebach made four free throws down the stretch to help St Mary to a 60-55 double-overtime win over the Arlington Cardinals on Friday, February 2nd at St Mary High School.

St Mary held a slight two-point lead after the first quarter at 14-12.  Ella Heinitz paced St Mary with eight points in that first quarter.  Neither team was able to get a bigger lead than six points in the first half.  St Mary continued to lead at the end of the second quarter at 25-21.

St Mary pushed their lead to nine points in the third quarter at 34-25, but Arlington went on a run to close the game to a point at 34-33.  St Mary responded with a 4-0 run to close out the third quarter and led 38-33 heading into the fourth quarter.  Arlington did not go away quietly.  Arlington made back-to-back three-point shots, the second coming with 1:25 to go, to tie the game at 43-43.  With the game tied 45-45, St Mary had two attempts to win the game in the final seconds that did not fall.  The defenses held tough in overtime.  The two teams were tied 49-49 when St Mary was called for a shot clock violation, and Arlington missed a shot at the buzzer.  Heinricy and Schwebach helped lead St Mary to victory scoring seven of the 11 points in the extra session for the win.

Two players finished with double-doubles for St Mary.  Schwebach led the way with 23 points and 15 rebounds.  Sydney Cook added 13 points and 17 rebounds.  Heinitz finished with 15 points.  Arlington was led by Marissa Backer with 14 points, Jeryn Christensen had 12 points, and Jayna Haufschild had 10 points.

St Mary (7-9) stopped a two-game skid with the win and will host Gayville-Volin on Monday, February 5th.  The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Quarrier Wrestling Team Goes 2-3 on the Week

NewQuarrierLogoThe Dell Rapids Quarrier wrestling team participated five duals on two nights during the week.

Dell Rapids dropped both duals in Canton on Tuesday, January 30th.  Canton defeated Dell Rapids 64-18, and Vermillion beat Dell Rapids 48-35.

The Quarriers then participated in a quadrangular at West Central High School on Thursday, February 1st.  Dell Rapids went 2-1 in their dual matches.  The Quarriers beat West Central 40-32, beat Adrian Area 42-19, but lost to McCook Central/Montrose 45-24.

Dell Rapids will travel to Sioux Falls Lincoln High School for a triangular with the Patriots and the Sioux Falls Roosevelt Rough Riders.  This will be their final night of competition prior to the Region 1A tournament on Saturday, February 17th in Dell Rapids.

Arlington Uses Two Big Quarters for Win

DRSM LogoThe first and fourth quarters for the Arlington Cardinals proved to be enough to earn a 74-52 win over the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals boys team on Thursday, February 1st at Dell Rapids St Mary High School.

Arlington started the game on a 7-0 run in the first 2:05.  The run continued throughout the rest of the first quarter as Arlington led 24-7 at the quarter break.  They continued to lead St Mary by 17 points at 28-11 with 6:24 left in the first half.  St Mary started to close the gap at that point.  St Mary closed out the first half on a 15-11 run to cut the lead to 13 points a 39-26 at halftime.  St Mary continued their run in the third quarter.  St Mary outscored Arlington 22-16 to get the game within single digits at 55-48.  Arlington then made their second big run of the game.  They went on a 9-0 run in the first 2:11 of the fourth quarter to extend their lead to 64-48.  Arlington continued to stifle St Mary.  St Mary only scored four total points in the fourth quarter as Arlington pulled away for the Dakota Valley Conference win.

Two players finished in double figures for St Mary.  Connor Libis had 20 points and three rebounds in the game.  Max Herber finished with 15 points and six rebounds.  Luke Brown tallied eight points, and Weston Geraets added four points.  Arlington was led by Will Parry with 26 points, Scott Sampson with 18 points, and Devon Heuer with 12 points.

St Mary (8-6) will play McCook Central/Montrose in Salem on Saturday, February 3rd.  This is a make-up date from a postponement earlier in the season.
