Alfred Hauglid Sr.

Alfred Lawrence Hauglid Sr., age 100 of Jasper, MN died Monday at Pipestone County Medical Center of Pipestone, MN. Funeral service is Thursday at 10:30 AM at the Jasper Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jasper. Interment in Jasper City Cemetery, Jasper. Visitation was 4-7 PM, Wednesday at the Hartquist Funeral Home ~ Foster Chapel, Jasper.

Alfred was born on September 29, 1911 to Albert and Alice (Lodahl) Hauglid in Jasper, MN. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Faith in Jasper. On September 29, 1934, he was united in marriage to Iola Hoime in Jasper. Following their marriage, they resided in Jasper where Alfred was employed at Jasper Farmers Elevator and became manager in 1942. Iola preceded him in death on December 20, 1971. Alfred was united in marriage to Carita (Kay) Hoagland in 1974. After he retired in 1976, they spent the next 20 winters in Arizona. In 1997, they moved into Sunrise Assisted Living in Jasper. On October 8, 2000, Kay preceded him in death. Following her death, Alfred continued living at Sunrise. He died at the Pipestone County Medical Center on Monday, June 18, 2012 at the age of 100 years, eight months and 20 days.

He is lovingly remembered by his son, Alfred Hauglid, Jr. and his wife Darlene of Fairmont, MN; four grandchildren, Jay (Georgia) Hauglid of Tempe, AZ, Kathy (Duffy) Post of Fairmont, MN, Kris (Gary) Walters of Fairmont, MN, and Jeff Hauglid of Windom, MN; six great-grandchildren; one stepson, Dick (Janet) Hoagland of Williams Bay, WI; four step grandchildren; several step-great- grandchildren and step great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Norman (Rose) Hauglid of Dell Rapids, SD; and one brother-in-law, Harold (Alice) Winter of Pipestone, MN. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Iola; his second wife, Kay; his parents, Albert and Alice Hauglid; three brothers, Merle Hauglid, Virgil Hauglid and an infant brother; four sisters, Gladys Schultz, Lorraine Winter, Lucille Dueth, and Leona Stephenson; and one step-daughter, Virginia Hoagland.

Jack Klein

John “Jack” Klein passed away on Thursday, June 14, 2012 at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls. Mass of Christian Burial for John “Jack” Klein will be held on Tuesday, June 19, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. in St. Mary Catholic Church. Interment will be in the St. Mary Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. on Monday, June 18, 2012 at Kahler Funeral Home and will resume at 6:00 p.m. in St. Mary Catholic Church. A Christian Wake Service followed by a Catholic Order of Forester’s Rosary will begin at 7:00 p.m. in the church.

John was born July 31, 1943 to Clarence and Mildred (Gebhart) Klein in Dell Rapids, SD. He graduated from Dell Rapids St. Mary’s Catholic School in 1961. He then attended South Dakota State University and graduated with an economics degree in 1965.

After graduation, he met Agnes Roeder. They married October 7, 1967 at St. Killian’s Catholic Church in St. Killian, MN. They farmed until 1981, after which he worked for Reecy’s Farm Supply for many years. He then held sales positions until 1999, when due to health reasons, he began a part time position valet parking at Avera Doctor’s Plaza 2. He retired in 2008.

John enjoyed traveling to see his family, playing with his grandchildren, playing cards with his children and card club, and participating in St. Mary’s functions. He was also active with youth group. He was a member of the booster club, parish finance council, and an active member of the Catholic Order of Foresters.

He was preceeded in death by his parents.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Agnes, his children and grandchildren, Cynthia (Wilbur), Luke and John Griswold of Littleton, CO; Pamela (Scott), Connor and Cooper Bauer of Webster, SD; Diane (Carlos) and Jessica Perez of Tallahassee, FL; Denise and Amellia Klein of Sioux Falls, SD; Kathy (Paul), Kaitlyn, Morgan, April, Abigail, and Sean Cihoski of Fairmont, MN; Timothy Klein of San Francisco, CA; Rosemary (Bill), Tyler and Jack Dively of Taylorville, IL; and Jonathan (Melissa), Kaleb, Mya and Eliana Klein of Rochester, MN. He is also survived by his siblings, JoAnn (James) Dawe, Sister Janice Klein PBVM, Jane (David Fisch) Klein, Joyce (Robert) Hericks, and Jerome (Jean) Klein.

Anna Frevik

Anna Frevik, age 92, formerly of Garretson, passed away on Thursday, June 14, 2012, at the Dells Nursing and Rehab Center in Dell Rapids. Funeral services will begin at 11:00 A.M. Monday, June 18, 2012, at Zion Lutheran Church in Garretson, with interment at the Sunset Rest Cemetery at Rushmore, Minnesota. Visitation with the family present will be from 3-5:00 P.M. Sunday, at the Minnehaha Funeral Home, Garretson.

Ann was born on October 4, 1919, at Little Rock, Iowa, to Cornelius and Anna (Modder) Schol. After receiving her education in Elgin Township, she stayed at home to help with raising her six brothers and sisters. She married Harry Renken in 1939. After their marriage they lived in Ocheydan, Iowa, for two years until moving to a farm north of Little Rock.

Following Harry’s death in 1964, Ann worked in Worthington until going to work for Justin Frevik as a housekeeper. She took care of Justin’s children, and after a year, Justin and Ann were married by Rev. Haygeman on August 7, 1965. Justin and Ann lived and farmed north of Sherman. During this time, Ann was an active housewife, having a large garden, canning, keeping house, embroidering, and helping Justin with hauling loads of corn at harvest. Through the years, she and Justin enjoyed dancing, playing cards, bowling, and attending their grandchildren’s activities. Ann was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Garretson where she was active in circle and ladies aid. Ann and Justin moved in to Garretson in 1985. They lived in Garretson until February 2008, when they moved to Orchard Hills in Dell Rapids.

Grateful for having shared her life are her children: Arlene (LeRoy) Groenewold, Rushmore, MN, Alan (Brenda) Frevik, Garretson, Sharon (Mike) Przeslawski, Bloomington, MN, and Jeanine (Kevin) Schnieders, Dell Rapids; grandchildren: David (Teresa) Groenewold, Atlanta, GA; Daryl (Danna) Groenewold, Brookings; Ann Groenewold, Worthington, MN and Tim (Sheila) Groenewold, Hartford; Amanda (Ryan) Roth, Dell Rapids and Brian and Alexis Frevik, Garretson; Justin and Krista Schnieders, Dell Rapids; ten great-grandchildren, twelve great great-grandchildren; and a brother, Clarence (Karen) Schol.

Manville “Pete” Pederson

Manville “Pete” Pederson, 77, of Chester passed away Sunday, June 10, 2012.

Memorial services will begin at 2:00 PM Thursday, June 14, 2012 at Minnehaha Funeral Home Chapel in Dell Rapids. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Chester.

Visitation will begin 2 hours prior to services with the family present at 1:00 PM.

Manville “Pete” Pederson was born November 2, 1934 on the family farm in Moody County to parents Herman and Inga (Nelson) Pederson. He was raised on the farm and attended Rudd Country School and Chester High School.

Pete married Norma Johnson July 25, 1951 at Pipestone, MN. He worked for L.G. Everist and Weiland Construction for several years. In 1980 Pete bought Shorty Weiland’s backhoe business which he ran until selling in 2000. He operated a road maintainer for several townships for over 35 years.

Pete was baptized in and attended the Lutheran Church. He was a member of the Elks Club, Prairie Village Threshing Association and Granite Iowa Threshing Association. He enjoyed working in his shop and restoring old cars and trucks.

Grateful for sharing his life are his wife, Norma; children, Randy (Wendy) Pederson, Dawn (Alvin) Meyer, Kevin (Donna) Pederson, Kim Nelson and special friend, Russ Pierce and Dallas Pederson and special friend, Laurie Bitner; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; sister, Mavis (Kenny) Vanderloo; mother-in-law, Jenny Johnson and many other relatives and friends.

Pete was preceded in death by his parents; grandson, Cody and father-in-law, Clarence Johnson.

Rob Roy Williams

Rob Roy Williams of Yankton, SD died Sunday, June 3, 2012 at his residence in Dell Rapids, SD. Funeral services will be 10:30 AM, Friday, June 8, 2012, at United Church of Christ Congregational with Rev. Dr. Rick Jensen officiating. Burial will be in the Yankton Cemetery, Yankton, SD with Military Graveside Rites by the Ernest-Bowyer VFW Post #791 and the SDARNG Honor Guard. Visitations will begin at 5 PM, Thursday, June 7, 2012, at the Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Home & Crematory, Yankton, SD and then one hour prior to the service at the church.

Rob Roy was born August 7, 1930 in Berwyn, NE to Glenn Charles and Vivian Vallie (Welch) Williams. He received his public school education in Hastings, NE and was a graduate of Hastings College and the Mayo Clinic School of Physical Therapy.

Rob Roy is survived by 2 daughters, Doe Anderson & Beth Prasek, both of Dell Rapids, SD; son, Ladd Williams of Truckee, CA; 5 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren; 2 sisters, Beverly Adair of Visalia, CA and Muriel Burge of Norfolk, NE.

He was preceded in death by his parents and wife, Chelsea.

Delight Pederson

Delight Marie Pederson was born June 16, 1909, at Dubuque, IA, to Nick and Emma (Dunne) Bechen. She moved with her family to South Dakota in her early childhood. She enjoyed her life on the farm, going to the neighborhood dances where her dad taught her to dance and she later taught her husband and children. She attended country school and high school in Rutland. On June 16, 1927, she married Elwyn Pederson at Pipestone, MN. To this union six children were born. Delight lived in several towns in South Dakota including Egan, Colman, Lake Campbell and Medary. When World War II began they moved to Douglas and Wichita, KS where Elwyn worked building the B-29 Bomber. After World War II, they returned to South Dakota, living in Colman and later Egan. They moved to Dubuque, IA and in 1999, Delight moved to Mitchell to be close to her children.

Delight did many interesting things during her life from running a cream station, working at the rest home in Flandreau, the Elks Lodge in Dubuque, IA and being a care giver to family members. Delight enjoyed sewing, crafts and baking angel food cakes, spending time with family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and traveling from the Holy Land to Alaska and points in between.

Delight is survived by her children: Clifford Pederson and wife Esther and Dianna Kummer and husband Duane of Mitchell; Donald Pederson and wife Jean, Raymond Pederson and wife Jean, and Joann Fields of Dell Rapids; one brother, Darrell Bechen and wife Jean of Melbourne, FL, two sisters, Doris Donovan of Dubuque, IA, Dorthea McWhorter of Alexandria, LA, 20 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren and 11 great-great-grandchildren.

Delight was preceded in death by her parents, one son Patrick, three brothers: Delbert, Dorrance, and DeSalles Bechan, one sister, Darlene Sanderson, one grandson, Darwin Pederson, daughter-in-law, Ann Pederson, son-in-law, Glen Fields, and brothers-in-law: Everett Sanderson, Robert McWhorter and Gerald Donovan.

Delight belonged to the Nativity Catholic Church and Guild in Dubuque, Holy Spirit Catholic Church and Altar Society in Mitchell and the DAV Auxiliary.

Susie Donaldson

Susie Donaldson, 89, of Dell Rapids passed away suddenly on Saturday, May 26, 2012 at the Avera Heart Hospital in Sioux Falls. Her funeral service will be held on Tuesday, May 29, 2012 at 1:00 p.m. in the Lutheran Church of Dell Rapids Chapel. Interment will be in the Dell Rapids Cemetery. Susie was born on September 22, 1922 in rural Lyon County, IA.  She grew up in Worthington, MN.  In 1940, she married Melvin G. Uecker and they moved to San Diego, CA, where Susie got a job at the Douglas Aircraft. In 1943, they bought a farm at Sherman, SD.  They had two sons, Douglas W. and LeRoy J.  Susie spent most of her young married life as a homemaker for her family.  After the boys had grown, Susie went back to work at Campbell’s Soup and Raven’s Industry as a seamstress.  In 1974, they sold the farm and retired to Dell Rapids, SD.    Shortly thereafter, Melvin passed away in 1976.

Susie was a member of the Lutheran Church of Dell Rapids.  She enjoyed taking care of her grandchildren, played ball with them, took them swimming, played cards and, of course, the Dairy Queen was always a treat.  She loved bowling and took many bus tours with her friend Fern LeBrun.
In 1995, Susie married Everett Donaldson and they made their home in Dell Rapids, SD.  This expanded her family to include two step-daughters and three step-sons.   To occupy their time, she became the president of the Dell Rapids Senior Center for many years. 

Susie is survived by second husband, Everett Donaldson, Dell Rapids, SD, her two sons, Douglas W. (Kathy) Uecker, Council Bluffs, IA, LeRoy J. (Marsha) Uecker, Parachute, CO, five grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, step-children, Ken (Sue) Donaldson, Sioux Falls, SD, Rita (Doug) Van Daalen, Manden, ND, Bill Donaldson, Dell Rapids, SD, and Tammy (Dave) Christensen, Sioux Falls, SD, with 10 step-grandchildren and 4 step-great-grandchildren.   Her siblings, sisters, Jane Gunn, Sioux Falls, SD, Grace Bruns, Worthington, MN and brother, Jim Meyeraan, Worthington, MN.  She was preceded in death by her parents, first husband, Melvin G. Uecker, five brothers, two sisters, special friend Fern L LeBrun, and step-son, Darrell Donaldson.

Benjamin Abraham

Benjamin Abraham, age 94, of Ramona, died Thursday, May 24, 2012, at Madison Community Hospital.  Benjamin George Abraham was born September 17, 1917, on the farm near Ramona, to Otto and Bertha (Brinkman) Abraham.  He attended Abraham Country School and served in the US Army during World War II as Private First Class.  Ben married Olga Janke on April 10, 1947, at Madison.  They farmed in the Ramona area.  Ben was a life-long member of St. John Lutheran Church where he had served as deacon.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister Ada Abraham and two brothers, Myron and Arthur Abraham.  Survivors include his wife Olga of Ramona; one son, Allen (Beth) Abraham of Ramona; two daughters, Barbara (Dave) Klein of Dell Rapids and Jolene (Randy) Williams of Sioux Falls; 11 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; and one sister Betty Barnum of Inyokern, CA.

Bruce Jernberg

Bruce Rodney Jernberg, 55, of Sioux Falls, SD died of natural causes on Monday, May 21, 2012. He was born January 14, 1957 in Lincoln, NE. He also lived in Grand Island, NE before moving to Sioux Falls, SD in 1989. He was employed at the University of Sioux Falls as a part-time custodian.

Bruce was preceded in death by his mother, Merna Jernberg Gaines, and his father, Rodney Jernberg. He is survived by his step-father, Don Gaines, of Wichita, KS, and his sisters, Barbara Horton, Dell Rapids, SD, and Beth Jernberg, Sioux Falls.

A family graveside service will be held at Lincoln Memorial Cemetery in Lincoln, NE on Friday, May 25. Memorials should be directed to the University of Sioux Falls.

Marian Velder

Marian H. Velder (Heisinger), 78, of Canton passed away at her home surrounded by family on Saturday, May 19, 2012. Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, May 22 at 10:30 am at St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Humboldt. Visitation will be held from 2 – 7 pm on Monday at Heritage Funeral Home in Sioux Falls with a prayer service at 6:30 pm.

Marian was born near Salem on July 12, 1933 to Anthony and Mary (Harpenau) Kolbeck. She married Donald Heisinger and they had one daughter, Kathleen. Marian married Daryl Velder on April 16, 1994 in Sioux Falls. Marian and Daryl moved to Mesa, AZ before making their home in Canton, SD in 2002.

Marian was a member of St. Dominic’s Catholic Church in Canton. She loved to play Mahjong and she and Daryl especially enjoyed going to the Canton Senior Center for lunch.

Marian is survived by: her husband, Daryl of Canton; one daughter, Kathleen (Kyle) Cook and two grandsons, Colin and Ryan Cook of Tecumseh, MI; five sisters, Mildred (Cy) Heiberger of Salem, LaVonne Munce of Hartford, LaVera (Hermie) Gustaf Casjens of Rock Rapids, IA, Janette (Fran) Krier of Sioux Falls, and Rozanne (Joe) Hanisch of Hartford; one brother, Eugene (Donalda) Kolbeck of Dell Rapids; one brother-in-law, Russell Stevens of Brainerd, MN; six step-children, Cindy (Greg) Bell of Tempe, AZ, Jim (Trish) Velder of Council Bluffs, IA, Sue (Steve) Weaver of Norfolk, NE, Patty (Dann) Freberg of Holdridge, NE, Kathy Velder of SC, and Diane (Chris) Zoet of Sheldon, IA; 26 step grandchildren; many step-great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Delores Stevens; two brothers, Donald and Sylvester; one nephew, Chris Hanisch; one step-son, Steve Velder; and first husband, Donald Heisinger. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be sent to the American Cancer Society for the purpose of cancer research.
