Dell Rapids Community Comes Together Again

September 18, 2019 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

Less than six months after major flooding in March, the Dell Rapids area was hit worse with flooding starting on September 12th.  Rain totals from two nights of storms on September 10th and 11th ranged from eight to ten inches which led to historic flooding of the Big Sioux River.

The river rose to a record high of 16.72 feet during the evening of Friday, September 13th.  The record level caused major water damage and displaced many families from their homes.

The community of Dell Rapids rose to action for those in need.  Dell Rapids City Administrator Justin Weiland praised numerous people for all their help.  The Dell Rapids City Public Works Department pulled rotating 24 hour shifts to make sure the city’s sewer system didn’t back up into people’s homes, plus they waded through flood waters to save city infrastructure.  Local businesses donated property for anyone who was impacted by the flood to store items, allowed sandbags to be stored and collected from their property, and donated meals.  Volunteer groups were set up to help direct those who were in need of help to get the things that they needed.  Organizations also helped to provide hotel rooms for those in need, and local fundraisers have also been held for those affected by the flood.

River levels have started to drop in the last week.  As of Wednesday, September 18th, the Big Sioux River level was at 14.5 feet.  The river is predicted to continue to drop to near the 13-foot mark by Monday, September 23rd.  As the waters recede, expectations are more damage may be revealed that is yet unknown.

Property owners and tenants affected by the two floods this year have asked the city if anything could be done during the council’s regular meeting on Monday, September 16th.  They noted that some cities, such as Sioux Falls, have purchased properties prone to flooding.  However, the city mentioned during the meeting that the City of Dell Rapids does not have the income to do something like that.  Administration did mention that they would continue to research different options that might be available and communicate findings to the property owners.  Meanwhile, members of the council said that they would do what they could legally do as a city entity to help those in need and give them guidance on how to move forward with any restoration or construction work on the homes in the future.

Dell Rapids Public School to Install Vape Sensors

September 18, 2019 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

As vaping continues to grow in popularity in middle school and high school aged children around the area, Dell Rapids public schools will be installing vape detectors this year in hopes of deterring students from vaping.  Dr. Summer Schultz sent a letter to parents throughout the district alerting parents to this change in the middle school and high school buildings.

Dr. Schultz cited alarming statistics in the rise of vaping devices in the letter.  She noted that nationwide data is showing high school aged students who regularly use vaping devices has increased 78% over the last year and the number of young adults of have at least tried it increased by 400%.  With this surge in use and reports across the country indicating the dangers of vaping, the school district has decided to try to combat the epidemic.

Dr. Schultz said in the letter, “Unfortunately, because vaping devices create minimal exhaled aerosol, and limited odor, our district has struggled to stop vaping on school grounds.  Going into the new school year, we have revised policy, worked to eliminate opportunity, and purchased detection devices.  Our intent is not to catch or trick students, rather, we hope to mitigate the activity in some of our most private area.  As users become addicted to nicotine, we know the long-term effects will continue to increase and nicotine can easily become a gateway to other substances.  Doing nothing is not an option, and although this isn’t going to solve the problem entirely, I hope it is a step in the right direction.”

The school partnered with the Dell Rapids Connections group to help fund the purchase of the devices.  Local businesses that help sponsor the annual Revive Fitness Family Run donated directly to this causes.  Those businesses are Dells Materials, BX Civil & Construction, Direct Automation, Big Sioux Media, Revive Fitness, Avera of Dell Rapids, and Brian Nelson, American National Insurance.

The full letter from the district is featured below in its entirety.

The theme for the 2019 South Dakota FFA Leadership Retreat was “Rock On”. The 126 FFA members who attended the retreat held at Camp Bob Marshall near Custer July 9-12 developed and enhanced their leadership skills and self-confidence through interactive learning. By joining the FFA organization and taking the initiative to attend the retreat, members are “rocking” their potential to get the most out of the FFA. While at the retreat, Mason Machmiller, the Dells FFA Chapter vice president, participated in the program that featured workshops that helped members discover the value of servant leadership, character, attitude, a focused vision, communication, trust, and responsibility. They will use these new skills and ideas to benefit their local chapters and communities and continue to “Rock On”. Ridge Hugbanks, the central region vice president from Alva, Oklahoma attended the retreat and helped the state FFA officers encourage the members to continue to develop their leadership skills. Retreat attendees also participated in a service learning project held at Camp Bob Marshall cleaning up areas of the camp along with attending the light show at Crazy Horse.

Local Blood Supplies in Critical Need

July 1, 2019 by Submitted

CommunityBloodBankDell Rapids, SD- Avera Dells Area Health and Community Blood Bank will partner up to save lives at a special summer community blood drive event held on Thursday, July 11 from 7:00 am to 11:00 am and 12:30 pm to 2:30 pm at Avera Dells Area Health. The public will have an opportunity to donate blood to help local patients in the hospital during the month of July. All blood donations will directly impact patients’ lives in Dell Rapids. All who donate will receive an All American blood donor t-shirt.

“This summer has been one of the most difficult to keep up with the demand for blood in recent years,” states Ken Versteeg, Executive Director, Community Blood Bank. “There have been many weeks where our usage is outpacing collection by 35%. Our hope is to start the summer months strong with an ample blood supply and keep this momentum moving to avoid any summer blood shortages. Join us to save lives within the community and show your support for those who serve and impact the community in many ways.”

Community Blood Bank supplies over 550 units of blood each week to people in the region. Among those who benefit from donated blood are trauma and burn victims, cancer patients and persons undergoing surgery. Donating blood is a simple way to save patients’ lives in the community. Without volunteer blood donors donating blood throughout the summer, it becomes increasingly difficult to maintain an adequate supply of blood for our community hospitals.

Donors must be at least 17 years old (16 years old with a signed parent consent form found at www.cbblifeblood.org), weigh 110 lbs. or more and be in good general health the day of the donation. Please bring an I.D. It is recommended that a person eat and drink plenty of fluid prior to donating. Community Blood Bank is not associated with any other blood bank organizations.

For more information log onto www.cbblifeblood.org or call Avera Dells Area Health Center at 428-2421. Community Blood Bank is not associated with any other blood bank organizations.

Dell Rapids Student Earns Scholarship for Summer FFA Retreat

June 11, 2019 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

“ADVISOR TRIBUTE” SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS CHOSEN
STUDENTS RECEIVE SCHOLARSHIPS FOR FFA SUMMER LEADERSHIP RETREATS

FFALogoBATH (May 31, 2019) – Agriculture education teachers/FFA advisors make a world of difference for the students they teach.  This spring students put into words, as part of an FFA Advisor Tribute Scholarship application, how their ag teachers/FFA advisors have impacted their lives. Sixteen outstanding examples of amazing teachers impacting their students have been chosen out of over 60 applicants, and winning students will each receive scholarships to attend a SD FFA Leadership Retreat this summer.

Sioux Valley Energy scholarships – Kaleb Holm, Brandon Valley; and Madison Decker, Garretson; Jacob Schmidt, Garretson; and Mason Machmiller, Dell Rapids senior

SD FFA Alumni scholarships – Shannon Brown, Deuel; Shane Johnson, Doland; Serena Davis, Belle Fourche; and Jacob Charles Campbell, Viborg Hurley

Walt Johnson Memorial Scholarships – Mikayla Oleson, Harrisburg; Ella Stiefvater, McCook Central; Grace Kock, Parker; Haelee Wuertzer, Rapid City; Lillyanna Wagner, Wall; and Joslyn Gonzalez, Wolsey Wessington

Leonard DeBoer Scholarships – Alex Seuer, Hoven and Paige Lehrkamp, Rapid City

The students wrote essays about how their FFA advisors have made an impact on their lives. Each of these students think their advisor is one of the best and is happy to say so!

  • Kaleb Holm, Brandon Valley senior appreciates the two years he’s had with Ms. Jackie Bogue as his ag teacher, “From the start she pushed me to be involved. She shared all the different things FFA could do for me in and after high school. She is still supporting me and telling me about all the things for college and life.”
  • Madison Decker, Garretson sophomore shares, “Mrs. Kientopf taught me to believe in myself, share my passion for agriculture, and have fun doing it. She let me know I am cared about and worth the time. She guides me in making decisions, makes sure I am doing my best and never gives up on me. I was a keep-to-myself girl; she took that shy girl, pushed me out of my comfort zone to try new things, and changed me into an independent person.” Jacob Schmidt, junior adds, “Ms. Kientopf has done so much for all of us – staying at school late to make sure everything is ready and even canceling family plans to helping us out. She cares about us, treats us like her own, and always makes sure we are ok!”
  • Mason Machmiller, Dell Rapids senior appreciates all his advisor has done, “Mr. Tom Wolff has influenced me and the other members of my FFA chapter  by encouraging us and pushing us to participate in Career and Leadership Development Events, which help us develop leadership skills for life.”
  • Shannon Brown, Deuel FFA sophomore shares, “Mrs. Jaacks helped me understand that working hard to get to where you want to be is better than not trying at all. I have carried her advice beyond FFA, throughout the school year and it has proven itself over and over.”
  • Shane Johnson, Doland freshman comments, “Mrs. Bailey Coates is caring, supportive, and encouraging. She goes above and beyond. She pushes me to strive for greatness in every aspect of my life and encourages me to incorporate FFA lessons into my everyday life. Because of her I have made amazing improvements in my Agriscience Fair entries and CDEs.”
  • Serena Davis, Belle Fourche junior comments, “Mr. Bishop knows the students, can tell each kids personality and interests, and helps us based on these qualities. He is positive and never says a bad thing anyone. He’s informed about class subjects and seeks more knowledge to add to class. We will never forget his ability to help us grow and learn.”
  • Jacob Charles Campbell, Viborg Hurley freshman, thanks his advisor, Mr. Nathan Knutson, “He taught me that if I work hard on something the results will always be good. He pushes us to volunteer for our community, making the world a better place. He is loyal, trustworthy, fun and encourages us to do our best and have fun doing it. He pushes me to meet more people through FFA and prepares me for life. Before Mr. Knutson, I knew nothing about farming or FFA, now it’s part of my life.”
  • Mikayla Oleson, Harrisburg senior, considers Mr. Todd Marks, who has been an FFA adivosr for almost 40 years, a 2nd dad, “As a freshman, I cried at the thought of public speaking. I was depressed and couldn’t see myself going anywhere in life. Mr. Marks showed me the light in life, because he is encouraging and wants to see me and everyone else succeed. He is an amazing advisor.”
  • Ella Stiefvater, McCook Central sophomore, is forever grateful, “My advisors, Mrs. Tracy Chase and Mr. Terry Rieckman, give me an abundance of opportunities and encourage me to do my best. Time management, work ethic, responsibility, and passion for agriculture are attributes they develop in members. Mrs. Chase’s ideas, creativity, organization, and endless supply of energy and generosity amaze me. Mr. Rieckman taught me to make a router sign, plan an SAE, and preside over a conduct of meetings team. Both continually support and push me to my greatest potential.
  • Grace Kock, Parker senior shares, “Mrs. Kelly Dunkelberger works hard to ensure all her students are successful. Under stress, she always perseveres and makes sure everyone is getting the attention and help needed. She has a clear knowledge and great passion for teaching. She encouraged and pushed me to get out of my comfort zone, making me a stronger leader with goals for personal success. She has not only impacted my life, but many other current and past students, pushing them to find confidence.”
  • Haelee Wuertzer, Rapid City junior say, “Mrs. Genetie Hendrix is always pushing us to our fullest potential. She doesn’t care about winning or doing well, but that we experience it, have fun, try our hardest and learn something. She is caring, humble, kind, and working to better the future of agriculture.”
  • Lillyanna Wagner, Wall junior, appreciates Ms. Dani Herring, “for showing people what FFA is really about and supporting us in everything we strive to do. She shows us opportunities and pushes our limits to show us what we really are capable of doing.”
  • Joslyn Gonzalez, Wolsey Wessington sophomore shares, “Mr. Boersma teaches students through hands on activities. Over the summer he checks in with members to look at SAE projects. He helps our community with shop projects, ice cream socials, and by organizing a school career fair.  He has changed our school and the community’s perspective of FFA, bringing a new set of goals every year. His commitment to agriculture and FFA is inspiring.
  • Alex Seuer, Hoven junior happily says thanks to her ag teacher, “Ms. Sara Colombe has showed me what leadership is in everyday life. FFA and agriculture class has allowed me to grow in many different ways, and see things in a different light. She pushed me to be an officer and has made a big impact in my life.”
  • Paige Lehrkamp, Rapid City junior says “Mrs. Donavon has supported me from day one. She pushes me to strive for success and improvement within our chapter, district, and State. The first time I met her we discussed FFA livestock shows at the state fair and she got so excited!  She immediately started emailing other advisors to get information. She helps her students grow in our passion of the agricultural industry and me become more confident and outgoing.”

Scholarships are made possible through the SD FFA Foundation by the SD FFA Alumni, Sioux Valley Energy, and the Walt Johnson Memorial Fund; in memory of two past FFA advisors: Leonard DeBoer and Walt Johnson.  Both men led by example and their advice was truly ripened with wisdom.  Mr. DeBoer spent his life teaching young people about agriculture and the leadership skills that would make them successful in their career choice.  He was the FFA advisor in Chamberlain for almost 40 years where he lived FFA’s mission by making a difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education.  Mr. Johnson served as the SD FFA Foundation President, as well as on the SD FFA Foundation board, in Newell as an ag teacher, community supporter and coach for FFA career development events. He was devoted to agriculture education and earned his Honorary American FFA Degree in 2007.

Inspiration on the Infield

June 7, 2019 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

DerekBaseball2

Inspirational, courageous, heroic….these are just some of the words that describe Derek Gerlach.

Derek has been fighting against a cancerous brain tumor which was diagnosed in November.  Since that day Derek has been fighting with a strength that can only be described as super human.

All of that strength and fight has led to some recent big wins.  Derek was able to participate in a couple of baseball practice drills in May with his team.  A recent MRI scan came back clean.  And on Wednesday, June 5th, Derek inspired everyone by playing in his first baseball game of the season.

With leg braces in place, ball pants and jersey just right, Derek stepped out onto the field and played first base.  He was able to be a part of three plays that night and step into the batters box for an at-bat.

The fight continues for Derek with more rounds of chemotherapy to keep the MRI results coming back clean, but for one evening, Derek was a normal 11-year-old boy playing the sport he loves.  That night he showed us it’s not about always making the play or getting the big hit, but it’s the attitude, determination, courage, and fight you bring to what you do.  On this night on the baseball field, Derek certainly inspired his teammates, coaches, and parents to always keep fighting.

To help support Derek’s fight, donations can be made to his Go Fund Me page found here, https://www.gofundme.com/help-derek-fight/.
