Hartford Sparx Win Two over Yankton Fury Fire

The Hartford Sparx 18U softball team got two wins over the Yankton Fury Fire 18U team on Thursday, June 17th.  The Sparx won by scores of 12-2 and 11-6.

In the first game, Yankton held a 2-1 lead after the first inning.  Hartford scored two times in the bottom of the second, but it was a nine-run third inning that solidified the win for Hartford.

McKenna Sichmeller had two triples in the game with four RBIs.  Grace Harden had three hits.  Caitlyn Maa finished with two hits and an RBI.  Addy Kramer had a triple and RBI.  Brooke Opitz, Avery Evans, Taylor Kunzweiler, and Riley Morrison all had an a hit and RBI.  Jenna Lueth also had an RBI.  Harden pitched all four innings allowing two earned runs on five hits with a walk and five strikeouts.

Despite a closer score in the second game, the Sparx still took control of the game early in the top of the first scoring seven times.  Yankton cut the lead to 7-5 with a five-run second inning, but Hartford make sure there would not be a comeback as they scored four times in the top of the third.

Olivia Brown had three hits and four RBIs in the second game.  Kramer had a hit and two RBIs.  Evans, Kunzweiler, and Morrison all had a hit and RBI.  Maa finished with two hits.  Opitz and Lueth both had an RBI.  Kunzweiler pitched three innings allowing six runs, five earned, on six hits with one walk and two strikeouts.

Tri-Valley White 14U Wins Back-and-Forth Game over Garretson

Tri-Valley White 14U scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth to win a back-and-forth game against Garretson on Friday, June 18th.

Garretson scored four times in the top of the first inning.  Tri-Valley answered with four of their own in the bottom of the inning for a 4-4 score.  Both teams scored a run in the second inning.  Tri-Valley took their first lead in the bottom of the third when Denton Bicknase scored on a wild pitch.

Garretson tied the game 6-6 in the top of the fourth inning, but Tri-Valley scored three more in the bottom of the inning.  Parker Hemme scored on a wild pitch, Grant Schlueter had an RBI sacrifice fly, and Gage Egger scored on a passed ball for a 9-6 lead.  Garretson tied the game, 9-9, in the top of the sixth with three runs.  Tri-Valley then had a five-run sixth inning to take the lead for good.  Egger scored again on a passed ball after a lead-off triple.  Schlueter had an RBI ground out, Bicknase had a two-run single, and Hemme had a bases-loaded walk for the fifth run.

Bicknase had three hits and three RBIs.  Egger had a triple and an RBI.  Dylan Christensen had a hit and an RBI.  Landon Schenkel had a double.  Schlueter had two RBIs, and Hemme and Levi Kretzschmar both had an RBI.

Schenkel pitched four innings allowing six runs, five earned, on eight hits with three walks and seven strikeouts.  Bicknase pitched an inning getting two strikeouts, and Egger pitched 1 2/3 innings allowing four runs, one earned, on three hits with one walk and three strikeouts.

Tri-Valley 16U Beats Parker in High-Scoring Game

Tri-Valley 16U had two six-run innings and overcame two six-run innings by Parker for a 17-13 win on Thursday, June 17th.

Parker scored the first six runs of the game in the top of the first inning without a hit, taking advantage of six walks and a hit batter.  Tri-Valley rallied for six runs in their half of the first inning.  Cole Focken had an RBI triple and later scored on a wild pitch, Noah Haynes had an RBI single, Mason Hendrixson had an RBI single, and Holden Rise had a two-run single.

Tri-Valley took the lead, 8-6, in the bottom of the second on a two-run single by Barrett Althoff.  Parker again had a six-run inning, this time in the top of the third.  They only had one hit in the inning and again took advantage of four walks and two errors.  Parker lead 12-8 heading into the bottom of the third, but Tri-Valley rallied again.  Tanner Van Asselt, Kaden Egger, and Focken all had an RBI single. B. Althoff brought home two runs on a single, and Haynes also had an RBI single to give Tri-Valley a 14-12 lead after three innings.  Tri-Valley scored three more times in the bottom of the fourth on a three-run triple by Egger.

Focken had four hits, including a double and a triple, with two RBIs.  B. Althoff had three hits and four RBIs.  Egger had three hits, one a triple, and four RBIs.  Haynes also had three hits and two RBIs.  Rise had two hits and two RBIs.  Van Asselt had two hits and an RBI.  Hendrixson had a hit and RBI.  Everett Althoff had two hits, including a double.

Lawson Loiseau allowed five earned runs on five walks.  E. Althoff pitched 2 2/3 innings allowing six runs, two earned, on no hits with four walks and three strikeouts.  Beau Keith pitched 4 1/3 innings allowing two earned runs on two hits with five walks and 11 strikeouts.

Garretson Scores Late Runs to Beat West Central 16U

West Central 16U held a 7-5 lead after four innings, but Garretson scored four runs late in the game to steal a 9-7 win on Thursday, June 17th.

Garretson got off to a quick start in the top of the first inning.  The first seven batters reached safely, and Garretson scored four times before an out was recorded.  West Central responded with a big inning of their own in the bottom of the first to tie the game 4-4.  Duece Sherard led the inning with a triple.  Justin Zirpel followed with an RBI double.  Gage Nelson and Dylan Stromer had back-to-back RBI triples, and Braydon Odegaard had an RBI single.

West Central took the lead in the bottom of the fourth after Garretson scored a run in the top of the fourth.  Stromer was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to tie the game 5-5.  Odegaard followed with a two-run single to give West Central the 7-5 lead. 

Garretson, however, scored three times in the top of the fifth inning with two outs to regain the lead at 8-7.  They added one more run in the top of the sixth.

Odegaard had two hits with three RBIs.  Zirpel had two hits, including a double, with an RBI.  Stromer had a triple with two RBIs.  Nelson had two hits, one of those a triple.  Sherard finished with a triple, and Andrew Zimmer had a double.

Owen Heath pitched four innings allowing five runs, three earned, on six hits with one walk and six strikeouts.  Zimmer pitched 1 2/3 innings allowing four runs, none of them earned, on three hits with three walks and a strikeout.  Odegaard pitched an inning allowing a hit and two strikeouts.

Dell Rapids 14U Wins Defensive Battle

Dell Rapids 14U got a run in the bottom of the first, and one more for good measure in the bottom of the sixth for a 2-0 win over Hills-Beaver Creek Blue 14U on Friday, June 18th at Volunteer Field in Dell Rapids.

Lincoln Fersdahl drove home the first run on an RBI single in the bottom of the first inning.  The other run came on an RBI double by Fersdahl in the bottom of the sixth.  The two teams combined for a total of just five hits.

Fersdahl had two of the three hits for Dell Rapids and both RBIs.  Cole Ruesink had the other a hit, a double in the sixth inning.

Ruesink pitched the first three innings allowing just one hit while striking out eight batters.  Fersdahl pitched the final four innings allowing a hit and two walks while striking out 11.

Dell Rapids will travel to Humboldt to play West Central 14U Gold on Tuesday, June 22nd.

Dell Rapids 16U Wins Fifth Straight

Once the offense got going for Dell Rapids, it could not be stopped as Dell Rapids took a 13-4 victory over Volga on the road on Thursday, June 17th. 

Dell Rapids didn’t score until the top of the third, but they scored four times in that inning, and then scored at least one run in every subsequent inning while never trailing in the win.

Braden Fersdahl had two doubles and two RBIs.  Dylan Mathis had two hits, one a double, with two RBIs.  Will Jaton also had two hits, including a double.  CJ Smith had a double and two RBIs.  Kade Kemer had a hit and an RBI.  Ethan Kringen had a double, and Sutton Williams had a single.  Joe Rechtenbaugh and Evan Nelson both had an RBI in the game.

Smith pitched four innings allowing two runs, both unearned, on one hit with one walk and one strikeout.  Fersdahl pitched three innings allowing two earned runs on a hit with six walks.

Dell Rapids Legion Drops Double-header, but Wins Next Game

The Dell Rapids Legion team finished a stretch of five games in three days with a double-header against Sioux Falls Post 15 Black on Wednesday, June 16th and then a trip to Volga on Thursday, June 17th.

Sioux Falls handed Dell Rapids two losses as they won the first game 14-3 and the second game 21-12.  Sioux Falls had a five-run third and eight-run fifth inning in the first game to get the win.

In the first game, Noah Swartwout had two hits, including a double, with two RBI.  Kaeden Eastman had a hit and RBI.  Jake Steineke, Brady Larson, Caleb Kittleson, and Connor Libis all had hits.  Kittleson pitched 4 1/3 innings allowing 11 runs, 10 earned, on 13 hits with two walks and two strikeouts.  Eastman pitched 2/3 of an inning allowing three earned runs on a hit with three walks and two strikeouts.

Ashaun Roach-Valandra had three hits, including a triple, and two RBIs in the second game.  Riley Peter finished with two hits and three RBIs.  Swartwout and Steineke each had two hits, and each with a double, and an RBI.  Bryce Sommerfeld had two hits, and Landon Ruesink and Eastman both had a hit.  Swartwout pitched 2 1/3 innings allowing seven runs, six earned, on seven hits with one walk and three strikeouts.  Libis pitched 1/3 of an inning allowing five earned runs on four hits with three walks and a strikeout.  Sommerfeld pitched 2 1/3 innings giving up nine runs, eight earned, on six hits with two walks and five strikeouts.

Dell Rapids bounced back the next night with a 12-8 eight over Volga on the road.  After Volga tied the game late in the bottom of the sixth inning, Dell Rapids scored five times in the top of the seventh to earn the victory.

Ruesink finished with three hits, one a triple, and three RBIs.  Eastman had two hits and two RBIs.  Larson also had two hits and an RBI.  Kittleson had a home run and two RBIs.  Andrew Van Dam had a double and two RBIs.  Sommerfeld had a hit and RBI.  Roach-Valandra had a hit, and Josh Deknikker had an RBI.  Ruesink pitched five innings allowing four runs, three earned on five hits with four walks and nine strikeouts.  Roach-Valandra pitched two innings and gave up four earned runs on two hits with five walks and a strikeout.

Mudcats Win Two More

The Dell Rapids Mudcats continued their winning streak with two more wins recently.  Dell Rapids defeated Canova 14-1 in a make-up game on Tuesday, June 15th and then got a win over Flandreau 10-2 on Thursday, June 17th.

The Mudcats used an eight-run third inning and a four-run fifth inning on their way to handing Canova their first loss of the season.

Mark Abrahamson and Chad Hunt both had three hits in the game.  Abrahamson had two doubles and two RBIs.  Hunt finished with three singles and an RBI.  Josh Roemen had two hits, including a double, with two RBIs.  Jimmy Bauer had two hits and two RBIs.  Grant Olson and Dalton Allen both had a hit and two RBIs.  Kris Regas pitched six innings allowing one run on five hits with nine strikeouts.  John Spaeth pitched one inning and allowed one hit and had one strikeout.

Dell Rapids followed that win with a 10-2 victory on Thursday.  The Mudcats scored three times in the first inning and had another three-run inning in the top of the eighth.

Dalton Lehnen had two home runs and three RBIs in the contest.  Travis Peters had two doubles.  Trevor Freudenthal and Olson both had two hits and two RBIs.  Nate Henry finished with two hits and an RBI.  Abrahamson had a hit with two RBIs.  Ty Hoglund had a home run.  Regas also had a hit.  Lehnen pitched six innings allowing four hits and had 12 strikeouts to get the win.  Regas pitched an inning allowing a hit and three strikeouts.  Abrahamson pitched two innings and gave up two runs on no hits with two strikeouts.

Open School Board Position Filled for One Year

The Dell Rapids School Board filled its open position during their regular meeting on Monday, June 14th.

Paula Harvey was selected by the school board to fill the position.  She will assume the role starting in July for one year.

The position was not filled during the school board election held earlier in the year.  School board members Troy Randall and Jacque LeBrun had their terms come to an end this year, but only one petition was filed to fill the two spots for the election.  That petition was submitted by Randall, so he will serve another three-year term also starting in July.

Dell Rapids Campground Reservations Fully Online

Reservations the campground in Dell Rapids are now all done on-line.  During the Dell Rapids City Council regular meeting on Monday, June 7th, it was reported that Finance Officer Claire Baartman worked very hard to get the system completely running on-line prior to the Memorial Day weekend.

All bookings for the campground will now have to be done through the online system as self registration in the campground will no longer be an option.

The entire campground, including the 14 new full hook-up sites, are open to rent on the online platform.
