The Dell Rapids Rubble Site is scheduled to open for the season on Saturday, April 19th, and will be open from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The rubble site will then be open Tuesday and Thursdays from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., and on Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The Dell Rapids City Council declared two free rubble site days at their regular meeting on Monday, April 7th. The first day will be Thursday, May 1st, from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. The second free day will be Saturday, May 3rd, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Dell Rapids School Board Meeting: 4/14/14
The Dell Rapids School Board will meet in regular session on Monday, April 14th, at 7:00 p.m. in the MS/HS DDN room. Some of the items on the agenda include the consent agenda, consideration of the 2013-2014 (current year) calendar, consideration of health insurance renewal, booster club donation request, and other committee reports. Dell Rapids Chamber Easter Egg Hunt
The Dell Rapids Chamber held their annual Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday, April 12th, at the Dell Rapids City Park. The event started at 10:00 a.m. and included three different age categories: 3-years-old and under, ages four to six, and 7-year-olds and older. The eggs were hidden in three separate sections of the park for each age group to have their own hunt. Many children attended the event on a beautiful Saturday morning. Each age group also had a “Golden Egg” winner.
Jesse James Invitational Track Results
The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal track team participated in the Jesse James Invitational Track Meet on Saturday, April 12th, in Garretson. The girls team finished 10th with a team score of 20. The boys team finished in sixth place with a team score of 63.50.
Anna Wolles finished sixth in the 1600m run with a time of 6:15.00. Jackie Wolles finished seventh with a time of 6:37.0, and Christina Vogel finished eighth with a time of 6:44.0. Kelly Michel had a sixth place finish in the 200m dash with a time of 0:29.94. A. Wolles finished third in the 3200m run with a time of 13:53.0. The 4x100m relay team finished fifth with a time of 0:58.04, and J. Wolles finished eighth in the 800m run with a time of 2:55.5.
For the boys team, Dalton Houska finished seventh in the 110m hurdles with a time of 0:21.24. Three Cardinal runners placed in the top eight in the 1600m run. Jared Scholten finished second with a time of 5:06.00. Mitch Roemen finished sixth with a time of 5:16.40, and Micah Roemen finished eighth with a time of 5:36.50. Scholten also won the 3200m run with a time of 10:49.10. The 4x100m relay team finished seventh with a time of 0:50.54, the 4x200m relay team finished fifth with a time of 1:42.90, and the 4x800m relay team finished third with a time of 9:13.10. Noah Fiegen finished seventh in the discuss with a throw of 117’10”. Fiegen also finished fifth in the high jump with a jump of 5’6″. Jacob Glazier won the long jump with a leap of 19’02”. Christian Schnieders placed sixth in the long jump with a jump of 17’11.75″. The sprint medley relay team finished sixth with a time of 4:25.50, and Glazier also placed third in the triple jump with a leap of 37’9″.
St Mary 4th at Flandreau Invitational Golf Tournament
The Dell Rapids St Mary boys golf team finished fourth at the Flandreau Invitational golf tournament on Friday, April 11th. The Cardinals finished with a team score of 279. Garretson won the event with a team score of 253. Colman-Egan finished second with a 259, and Parker finished third with a team score of 273. Nathan Klein finished the day in 9th place with a round of 90. Ethan Schmidt finished with a 93, and Austin Kubly had a round of 96 on the day.
Tri-Valley Invitational – Girls Results
The Dell Rapids High School girls track team competed in the Tri-Valley Invitational on Thursday, April 10th.
The 400m-Relay team of Sami Rieder, Demi Erickson, Lindsey Morris and Kiah Schumacher finished second. Cheyenne Spielmann finished second in the 800m run, and Mikaela Stofferahn also finished second in the shot put.
The 3200m-Relay team of Lexi Snyder, Betson Amundson, Brittany Kludt, and Spielmann finished third. The 800m-Relay team of Reider, Megan Miles, Morris and Schumacher finished third. Brittney Siemonsma finished third in the shot put, and Maddie Vietor finished third in the triple jump.
Snyder also finished third in the 1600m run. Stofferahn had a fourth-place finish in the discus, and Jessica Tisher finished fourth in the triple jump.
Kludt finished fifth in the 1600m run. The medley relay team of Drew Lesselyoung, Kyrsten Williams, Betsty Amundson, and Hannah Fiedler finished fifth. The 1600m-Relay team of Reider, Morris, Fiedler, and Miles also finished fifth. Mikaela Adams had a fifth-place throw in the discus, and Vietor finished fifth in the long jump with a state-qualifying jump.
The boys team also competed in the Tri-Valley Invitational, finishing first in the team standings.
Ruth Williams
Ruth E. Williams, age 95, of Madison, died Thurs., April 10, 2014, at Bethel Lutheran Home, Madison.
Ruth Schmidt was born Feb. 17, 1919, at rural Madison, to Clarence & Josephine (Ryness) Schmidt. She graduated from Orland High School and obtained her teaching certificate from Eastern Normal School, Madison. She taught school at Moose and Tuynman Country Schools. Ruth married her high school sweetheart Craig Williams on Feb. 18, 1939, at Salem. They farmed in Orland and Franklin Townships before retiring to Madison in 1982.
Ruth was president and 50-year member of Lake County Extension, president and member of Franklin PTA, and member of Franklin Study Club and Hustling Housewives Extension Club. She was also a member of St. John Lutheran Church, Madison, where she served on the council, and was an officer and member of the ALCW for many years. Ruth loved playing cards, collecting dolls, and going to rummage sales. She considered her six children to be her greatest accomplishment.
Ruth was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Craig in 2006; two infant grandchildren; a great-grandson, Zachary Kischnick; a son-in-law, Les Anderson; a daughter-in-law, Shirley Williams; one sister, Clara Frye and two brothers, Ralph and Donald Schmidt.
Survivors include three sons, Ronald of Burton, MI, Darrold (Dianne) of Dell Rapids and Steven S. (Linda) of Madison; three daughters, Eleanor (James N.) Enga of Madison, Joan (Dennis) Degen of Hartford and Carol (Glenn) Cornell of Clark; 16 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren; three step great-grandchildren; six step great-great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Fern (Lee) Anderson of Worthington, MN; and many nieces and nephews.

Winter Sports Awards
The South Dakota Basketball Coaches Association also recently named their Academic All-State recipients for the winter sports season, and many Dell Rapids senior athletes received the honor. To be recognized, the students must be a senior, have a GPA of 3.5 or above cumulative for their 9th, 10th, and 11th grade years, and must have been involved in the sport for three years of high school.

Your Kids and Social Media Event
The Dell Rapids Connections for a Healthy Community group presented a live webcast event “Your Kids and Social Media: What You Need to Know” on Tuesday, April 8th, at the Dell Rapids Elementary School. The seminar was hosted by Avera and the Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation. The event was a forum on the types of social media children are using today. The presentation featured guest speakers South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley, South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation Special Agent Brent Gromer, Dr. Shari Eich – Pediatrician at Avera Medical Group Pediatrics, Lezlee Greguson-Lund, PhD, LP – Educational Psychologist with Avera Medial Group Midwest Psychiatric, and Paul Ten Haken – ClickRain President and Chief Online Strategist.

Seniors vs Staff Charity Game a Huge Success
The 2nd annual Seniors vs Staff charity basketball game was held on Friday, April 4th. The event was a benefit for the MS Walk in honor of Dell Rapids High School senior Damon Scott, 2014 MS Walk Ambassador. Throughout the night, raffle items were given away and there was also items for sale through a silent auction. $5,500 was raised during the benefit at the Dell Rapids High School gym. The seniors won the game in the final moments 88-87.
