Ten in a Row for the Quarrier Girls

DRvsDV_GBB_2-10-17The Dell Rapids Quarrier girls won their 10th game in a row after a 72-60 win over the Dakota Valley Panthers on Friday, February 10th, in Dell Rapids.  Not only have the Quarriers won for the 10th time in a row, they have won 12 of their last 13 games and continue to hold the top spot in Region 3A.

Both offenses were rolling in the first quarter.  Dell Rapids was able to get a 17-14 lead after the first quarter.  The Quarriers pushed that lead to seven by halftime at 32-25.  Both teams scored 19 points each in the third quarter, and Dell Rapids maintained their seven-point lead at 51-44 after the third quarter.  The Quarriers were able to pull away down the stretch in the fourth quarter for the win.

Ten different players scored in the game for Dell Rapids.  Jayda Knuppe finished with 19 points and seven rebounds.  Arial Hoffman added 15 points and five rebounds.  Emma Paul had nine points and 10 rebounds, while Kaylee Hennen had eight points.

Dell Rapids (14-4) will continue their home stand on Monday, February 13th, when they host the Canton C-Hawks as part of a girls and boys double-header.  Monday will also be Senior Night, and the seniors for both the girls and boys will be recognized between the girls and boys games.  Both games will be webcast on Big Sioux Media.

 

Quarrier Wrestling Splits Duals at SF Roosevelt

QuarriersThe Dell Rapids Quarrier wrestling team won a dual and lost a dual at a triangular at Sioux Falls Roosevelt High School on Thursday, February 9th.  The Quarriers defeated Sioux Falls Lincoln 46-30, but fell to Sioux Falls Roosevelt 59-17.

Gage Carr earned two wins on the night, but almost every wrestler earned a win throughout the triangular.

The varsity wrestling team will have a week off before the Regional Tournament which will be held on Saturday, February 18th, at West Central High School in Hartford.

Cardinal Boys Come up Short in Elkton

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals fell to the Elkton-Lake Benton Elks 63-42 on Thursday , February 9th, in Elkton.  The loss drops the Cardinals to 8-9 on the season.

The Cardinals got into a hole in the first quarter as the Elks were able to grab a 13-4 lead by the end of the first quarter.  St Mary was able to cut into the lead by halftime, but the Elks still lead 34-26 at the half.  The Elks then outscored St Mary 29-16 in the final two quarters for the win.

St Mary shot 41% (17-42) in the game, 28% (5-18) from three-point area, and were 3-3 from the free-throw line.  The Cardinals only had 20 team rebounds in the game, seven assists, and turned the ball over 17 times.

Connor Libis led the team in scoring with 15 points and also had three assists.  Zach Geraets had six points, and Luke Brown finished with five points.  Garret Frost led the team with four rebounds in the game.

St Mary will host Colman-Egan on Monday, February 13th.  The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Trevor James Nussbaum

TrevorNussbaumTrevor James Nussbaum was born October 7, 1989 to Andrea Nussbaum in Dell Rapids, SD. A majority of his childhood was spent in the Trent area, he loved to spend time at his Grandma and Grandpa’s house. Full of energy, he loved to go fishing, skateboarding and ride dirt bikes. One of his favorite things to do was to build things with Grandpa’s tools. He also liked working on dirt bikes and his truck, or car, or whatever vehicle he had at the time. He would spend hours fixing, painting, and modifying his vehicles. Trevor loved to spend time with family and friends and would do anything for those he loved.

He will be deeply missed by his daughter, Adley Jo, parents Andrea and Troy Scherff (Sioux Falls), Eric and Misty Dillon (Sioux Falls). Siblings Devlin, Wiley and Hayden Dillon (Sioux Falls), Aubrey (Larissa) Scherff (Trent) and Yancie Scherff (Brookings). Grandparents Gene and Dianne Nussbaum (Trent), Jo Ann Dillon (Sioux Falls) and Melvin and Sharon Scherff (Trent). His girlfriend Calla Duncan (Flandreau). Aunts and uncles: Tammy & Jason Dearduff (Volga), Laurie and John Hudgens (White), Jarrod and Karla Nussbaum (Richland) and Paul and Jill Scherff (Trent). Cousins Courtney, Eli, Nicolas, Cassidy and Adam. He was preceded in death by his cousin Zachary Nussbaum.

There will be a celebration of Trevor’s life on Friday, February 10th, at 6:00 p.m. at the Dell Rapids Legion 408 Orleans Ave, Dell Rapids.

Cardinal Boys Even Record with Win

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals evened their record with a road win against the Centerville Tornadoes by a score of 59-44 on Tuesday, February 7th.  Four players scored in double figures for the Cardinals in the win.

St Mary trailed by a point at the end of the first quarter at 13-12, but the Cardinals outscores Centerville 36-19 in the next two quarters.  St Mary led 29-22 at halftime, and then pushed their lead to 48-32 at the end of the third quarter.

The Cardinals shot 33% (21-64) from the field, 19% (5-26) from three-point area, and 57% (12-21) from the free-throw line.  St Mary also had a total of 43 team rebounds, 14 assists, and 17 steals.

Zach Geraets had 14 points and seven rebounds to lead the Cardinals.  Garret Frost had 11 points, four rebound, and two assists.  Connor Libis had 11 points and two assists.  Weston Geraets finished with 10 points, four rebounds, and four steals.

St Mary (8-8) travel to Elkton to play the Elkton-Lake Benton Elks on Thursday, February 9th.

Comeback Falls Short for Quarrier Boys

DRHSvsMVP_BBB_2-7-17After trailing by 15 points with 5:30 to go in the game, the Dell Rapids Quarriers fought back to pull within two points, but the Mt Vernon/Plankinton Titans knocked down their free throws to pull away with a 69-62 win in Dell Rapids on Tuesday, February 7th.  This is the third straight loss suffered by the Quarriers.

The Titans ended the first quarter on a 5-0 run over the final 2:00 to take a 13-8 lead after the first quarter.  Dell Rapids was able to trim the lead by a point by halftime at 30-26.  The Quarriers were held to just eight total points in the third quarter and found themselves trailing 42-34 heading into the final quarter.

Mt Vernon/Plankinton went on a 9-2 run over the first 2:30 of the fourth quarter to pull ahead 51-36 with 5:30 remaining in the game.  The Quarriers rallied for 13 straight points over the next 3:30 to get within two points at 51-49 with 2:00.  The Titans hit 16 straight free throws over the final two minutes of the game and pulled away for the 69-62 win.

Dell Rapids shot 51% (29-57) from the field, 23% (3-13) from three-point area, and just 1-3 from the free throw line.  The Quarriers had 36 team rebounds, 20 assists, but turned the ball over 16 times.

Austin Ellingson led the team in scoring with 16 points along with five assists.  Jeffrey Schuch had 10 points, nine rebounds, and five blocks.  Mason Schmidt added nine points, and Tanner Heim had eight points.  Heim also had 11 rebounds, five assists, and three steals.  Carson Rentz had seven points and four assists, while Sheldon Siemonsma had six points and seven rebounds.

Dell Rapids (11-5) will host Dakota Valley on Friday, February 10th, as part of a girls and boys double-header.  Both games can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Quarrier Girls Run Streak to Nine Games

DRHSvsMVP_GBB_2-7-17The Dell Rapids Quarriers ran their winning streak to nine in a row with a 59-35 win over the Mt Vernon/Plankinton Titans at home on Tuesday, February 7th.  The game marked the first of four straight home games to end the regular season for Dell Rapids.

The Quarriers defense held the Titans to just four points in the first quarter as Dell Rapids led 13-4 at the first break.  Dell Rapids was able to push the lead to 37-15 by halftime.  Both teams scored 12 points each in the third quarter as Dell Rapids maintained their 22-point lead at 49-27.  Dell Rapids outscored the Titans 10-8 in the final quarter for the win.

Two players finished the game in double figures for Dell Rapids.  Both Jayda Knuppe and Arial Hoffman ended the game with 15 points each.  Averi Pankonen tallied eight points, and Kali Graham and Emma Paul both had six points each.  Knuppe led the team with eight rebounds.  Graham, Paul, and Kaylee Hennen all had five rebounds.

Thomas Thill

Thomas ThillThomas W. Thill, 73, of Lakewood, formerly of Dell Rapids, South Dakota, passed away January 26, 2017 at Brookdale Assisted Living in Lakewood, CO. He was born January 11, 1944 in Dell Rapids, South Dakota, the son of Lawrence (originally from Ramsen, IA) and Regina (Sitzmann) Thill (originally from LaMars, IA). He was a graduate of St. Mary’s High School in Dell Rapids. You may leave on-line condolences at the Newcomer Funeral Home website.

Honorably served in the US Army in the Vietnam War. Tom retired from the US Post Office after 28 years of service. He stayed in touch with his coworkers from the Post Office, meeting monthly for breakfast. He was also a parishioner at St. Jude Catholic Church in Lakewood.

Tom was a Master Gardener who loved flower gardening. He traveled extensively, especially taking the Windjammer Cruises, scuba diving, and shell collecting. He also enjoyed collecting glassware, stamps, and antiques. He frequented garage sales every weekend to add to his collections. Tom was an avid square dancer. He loved spending time outdoors. He was an animal lover and enjoyed photography and playing cards. Above all, he loved his family and spending time with his nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Thomas is survived by Six Brothers and One Sister, William “Bill” (Sheryl) Thill, Gene (Jackie) Thill, Dwaine (Joan) Thill, Elaine (Dick J.) Marie Schwebach

Marie SchwebachMarie C. Schwebach, 86, of Dell Rapids passed away Thursday, February 2, 2017, after a gracious battle with ALS.  Mass of Christian Burial was held on February 6, 2017 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Dell Rapids. Burial will be in St. Mary Catholic Cemetery.  On-line condolences may be left at the Minnehaha Funeral Home website.

Marie Mihin was born on a farm in Lowville Township near Hadley, Minnesota on June 6, 1930, to Frank and Minnie (Eichhorn) Mihin. She moved to Sioux Falls with her family in 1945, graduating from Cathedral High School in 1947. She worked as a secretary at Morrells in Sioux Falls. She married Jerome “Pete” Schwebach on October 11, 1952. In 1960 they started Schwebach Insurance and Real Estate where she worked until 2015.

Marie genuinely loved helping people find homes and insurance. She always had time for a story, and promoted Dell Rapids with a passion. She prayed daily for the well-being of everyone. She loved her family. Family was everything to her. She is eager to get to the table Pete reserved for them near the dance floor in Heaven.

She is survived by her daughter Karen (Brad) Wallenberg of Sioux Falls; her sons: Tim of Dell Rapids, Rob (Lynn) of Fort Collins, Colorado, Jeff (Denise) of Sioux Falls, and Tom (Tami) of Dell Rapids; 15 grandchildren; four great grandchildren; and sisters-in-law, Dolores Mihin and Rita Walker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Pete in 2011; and her grandson, Jacob.

Dell Rapids Fire Department 2016 Calls

The Dell Rapids Fire Department responded to a total of 277 calls throughout the year in 2016.  Of those 277 calls, 151 of those were for medical need.  32 of the calls were for car accidents, and 25 of the calls were alarm activation.  June and April were the months with the most calls.  June had 35 calls and April had 32 calls.

The fire department had seven members make it to over 100 calls throughout the year.  Alec Hansen, Clarence Fjellenger, Shane Deraneau, Travis Roth, Wayne Mergen, Bob Mier, and Kelly Peterson.

As a small token of “thank you”, the Dell Rapids Connection group served a meal to the first responders on January 9th.

As of the beginning of this year, the Dell Rapids Fire Department has 21 members and four on a one year probational membership period.
