Rita (Schwebach) Walker

Rita WalkerRita M. Walker, 85, formerly of Flandreau, SD, died Friday, February 24, 2017 at Prestige Senior Living – Auburn Meadows, Auburn, WA.

Rita was born December 17, 1931 in Dell Rapids, SD, to Nicholas and Mary (Hilgert) Schwebach. She attended St. Mary’s Catholic School. She worked at the Dells Theater, Dells Creamery and Van Buren & Vogt in Dell Rapids before her marriage to Vernon V. Walker on April 23, 1955. The couple lived in Brookings and Dell Rapids, where Rita operated Rita’s Fabric Shoppe, before opening Walkers’ Fine Foods & Spirits in Flandreau in 1975. The couple retired from the restaurant business in 1996, only to take over the operation of the Old Dutch Inn in Dell Rapids from 1999-2000, when they retired “for real.” Rita was a long-time member of SS. Simon & Jude Catholic Church in Flandreau. She was a past regent of the Catholic Daughters. During retirement, she enjoyed scrapbooking and being “Gigi” to her great-grandchildren. Rita moved to Auburn, WA in 2012.

Rita was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon, on October 11, 2007. She is survived by three children: Cheryl (Joseph) Rook of Auburn, WA; James (Barbara) of Sioux Falls, SD; and Susan (Richard) Reeves of Smithfield, UT; seven grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.

Albert “Rusty” Schieber

Albert SchieberAlbert “Rusty” Schieber, 88, of Dell Rapids, SD, formerly of Colman, SD, passed away Friday, March 3, 2017, at Avera Dells Area Hospital, Dell Rapids. He was born October 29, 1928 at Thunderhawk, SD, to John and Lena (Kurt) Schieber. Rusty attended grade school in Brandt, SD, and graduated from high school at Toronto, SD. He entered the U.S. Navy and after his discharge was married to Joyce Colberg on October 30, 1949, at Luverne, MN. They lived in Astoria and Toronto and he drove truck for Thompson Brothers. They moved to Colman, SD in 1968 and Rusty drove for T & R Electric retiring in 1999. His wife preceded him in death on October 19, 1999. Rusty moved to Dell Rapids in 2015. He was a member of Colman Lutheran Church, former mayor of Colman, enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, cooking and was a former pool player.

Rusty is survived by five daughters, Kayleen (Richard) Kaduce, Eau Claire, WI; Deb Vrooman, Dell Rapids; Lori (Frank) Walker, Brandon; Lisa (Scott) Shearer, Brookings; Jody (John) Backer, Sioux City, IA; one son, John, Harrisburg, SD; 20 grandchildren and 36 great-grandchildren. Rusty was preceded in death by his wife, parents, son-in-law Loren, six brothers, Herman, Frank, Joseph, Mike, John, Clifford, and two sisters, Catherine and Grace.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, March 6, 2017 at Colman Lutheran Church with burial in the Colman Cemetery. Visitation is 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. Sunday at Skroch Funeral Chapel, Colman. On-line condolences may be left at the Skroch Funeral Home website.

Quarrier Girls Earn 3rd Straight Trip to State

2017DRGirlsSweet16ChampThe Dell Rapids Quarriers earned their third straight trip to the State A Tournament after beating the Todd County Falcons 59-49 in the Sweet 16 round in Chamberlain on Friday, March 3rd.  The win was also the 14th win in a row for the Quarriers.

Dell Rapids opened the game on a 7-0 run in the first 2:30.  Todd County countered with an 8-0 run over the next two minutes to take an 8-7 lead with about 3:30 to play in the quarter.  The teams traded baskets the remainder of the quarter, and the Falcons led 15-14 after the first quarter.  Dell Rapids started the second quarter on a 6-2 run to take a 20-17 lead, and slowly pulled added to the lead until it was 30-21 at halftime.

The Falcons were able to chip away at the Quarrier lead in the third quarter and held Dell Rapids to just eight third quarter points.  Todd County and Dell Rapids headed to the fourth quarter tied at 38-38.  Dell Rapids scored the first three points of the fourth quarter, but the Falcons answered with a two-point basked with 7:00 to go to make the score 41-40.  Dell Rapids scored the next six points and pushed the lead to 47-40 with 5:45 remaining in the game.  Dell Rapids maintained a seven-to-nine point lead until the Falcons pulled within five points at 52-47 with 1:52 to go.  The Quarriers ended the game on a 7-2 run for the win.

Kali Graham, who was held scoreless in the first quarter, led Dell Rapids with 19 points.  Jayda Knuppe added 18 points.  Averi Pankonen had eight points, Emma Paul finished with seven points, Kaylee Hennen had three points, and Sydney Stofferahn had two points.  Dell Rapids finished 20-33 from the free-throw line in the game.

The Quarriers (14-4) will ride their 14-game win streak into the 2017 State A Tournament in Brookings on March 9th through 11th.  Dell Rapids will play Dak-12 foe Lennox in the opening round on Thursday at around 7:45 p.m.  Lennox was the last team to beat the Quarriers, which was a 63-60 overtime loss on January 9th in Lennox.

Season Ends for Quarrier Boys Against Chargers

DRvsSFC_BBB_3-2-17The Dell Rapids Quarriers had their season come to an end in the Region 3A semi-finals on Thursday, March 2nd, against the Sioux Falls Christian Chargers at the Elmen Center.  The Chargers defeated the Quarriers 71-54.

Both teams started the game on little runs, and the first quarter ended with the scored tied at 13-13.  Sioux Falls Christian was able to make a run late in the second quarter and pulled away from Dell Rapids at 31-21 by halftime.  The Quarriers came out of halftime with energy and cut the lead to four points early in the third quarter.  The Chargers, however, quietly and methodically pulled away from Dell Rapids and led 49-36 by the end of the third quarter.  Sioux Falls Christian was almost automatic from the free throw line in the fourth quarter, and was 20-24 in the game.  The Chargers outscored Dell Rapids 22-18 in the final period for the win.

Dell Rapids was led by Jeffrey Schuch with 15 points.  Austin Ellingson added 11 points.  Tanner Heim finished the game with 11 points and five rebounds.  Sheldon Siemonsma also finished in double figures with 10 points.  Dell Rapids shot 39% (20-51) from the field and 63% (10-16) from the free-throw line.  Sioux Falls Christian was led by Mitchell Goodbary with 19 points, and Dejay Fykstra with 13 points.

Sioux Falls Christian will advance to the Sweet 16 and will play Sisseton on Tuesday, March 7th.

The Madison Bulldogs also advanced to the Sweet 16 with a 70-52 win over the Flandreau Fliers in the opening game of the night.  Madison was led by Aaron Fiegen with 29 points, and Riley Janke had 14 points.  Flandreau was led by Dalyn Bakkedahl with 21 points and Dylan LeBrun with 20 points.  Madison will play Hot Springs in the Sweet 16 round also on Tuesday, March 7th.

‘So Happy’ Adoption Official

Adoption2“I’m so happy that it finally happened!” exclaimed Kaeley Rose Nelsen.  This 12-year-old has been waiting for a very long time to be officially adopted by April Nelsen.  The wait came to an end on Monday, February 27th.  April officially adopted Kaeley at the Minnehaha County Courthouse with Judge Judge John Pekas and lawyer Jon Hansen.  The whole process took about three years to complete, but the big day only took nine minutes!

April and Kaeley bonded from the first day they met in March 2011.  They met at Kaeley’s aunt and uncle’s wedding, and they Adoption1haven’t looked back.  They love to spend time together shopping, working out, and cheer.  Neither one of them have had a doubt that they belong together.  Kaeley had written a letter saying that April was “her one and only mom”.

Aaron Nelsen has had custody of Kaeley since she was 1.  Both her grandmothers, Theresa Nelsen and Dawn Malsam, were in attendance of the adoption.

Darwin Marshall

Darwin_MarshallDarwin Marshall, 84, of Dell Rapids passed away Sunday, February 26, 2017 at the Sioux Falls VA Medical Center. Memorial services will begin at 1:00 PM Friday, March 3, 2017 at Minnehaha Funeral Home Chapel in Dell Rapids. Burial will be at a later date in Martin, SD. Visitation with the family present will be from 11:30 AM to 1:00 PM Friday, March 3, 2017 at Minnehaha Funeral Home.

Darwin Philip was born December 11, 1932 at Martin, SD to parents Philip and Esther (Yellow Hair) Marshall. He grew up and received his education in the Martin area, graduating from Bennett County High School. He then joined the US Army, serving from January 29, 1953 until January 27, 1956. Following his service to his country, Darwin moved back to Martin for a while, and then moved to Sioux Falls. Darwin lived in Baltic from 1964 to 1981 before moving to the Dell Rapids area. He sold insurance for a short time then worked for Brendsel Electric for 16 years. He was also employed at the South Dakota State Penitentiary.

Darwin enjoyed spending time with his family. His grandchildren were very special to him. He liked most sports but bowling, fishing, rodeo and racing were his favorites. He was a member of the American Legion and was on the Baltic Fire Department for many years. Darwin was also there to lend a helping hand to his family and many friends.

Grateful for having shared his life are his children, Sandi (Steve) Otto, Alexandria, MN, Stuart Marshall, Amarillo, TX and Rich Marshall, Sioux Falls; six grandchildren, Marisa and Luis, Alexandria, MN, Grace and Max, Amarillo, TX and Jamie and Ethan, Sioux Falls; great-grandchild, Nick; sisters, Charlotte Anderson, Ansley, NE, Lynn Beem, Rapid City, SD and Avril Livermont, Wanblee, SD; brother, Marvin Marshall, Madison, SD; sixteen nieces and nephews as well as many other relatives and friends.

Darwin was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers; three sisters and three nieces.

Defense Sends Quarrier Boys to Region 3A Semi’s

DRvsBaltic_BBB_2-28-17The Dell Rapids Quarriers held the Baltic Bulldogs to single digits in three of the four quarters on their way to a 65-32 win in the opening round of the Region 3A tournament in Dell Rapids on Tuesday, February 28th.

The Quarriers got out to an 18-10 lead by the end of the first quarter.  The first quarter was the only quarter Baltic would score double figures.  Dell Rapids would outscore the Bulldogs 22-8 in the second quarter for a 40-18 lead at halftime.  Baltic was only able to get eight points in the third quarter as well and trailed 59-26 heading into the fourth quarter. Both teams were held to just six points each in the final period.

Dell Rapids finished the game shooting 44% (27-62) from the field, 16% (4-25) from three-point area, and 78% (7-8) from the free-throw line.  They had a total of 46 rebounds in the game, 16 assists, 10 steals and only turned the ball over six times.

Four players finished in double figures led by Sheldon Siemonsma with 18 points, four assists, two steals, and two blocked shots.  Jeffrey Schuch had 14 points, eight rebounds, and two steals.  Mason Peter added 13 points along with eight rebounds and three assists.  Mason Schmidt finished with 11 points and six rebounds.  Logan Heim had a team high 12 rebounds in the game.

Dell Rapids (15-6) will face the Sioux Falls Christian Chargers on Thursday, March 2nd, at the Elmen Center.  Game time will be 8:00 p.m. with the winner advancing to the Sweet 16.  Madison will play Flandreau in the first game on Thursday starting at 6:30 p.m.   Both games will be broadcast on Big Sioux Media.

Cardinal Boys Season Ends in Elkton

DRSMvsELB_BBB_2-27-17The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals had their 2016-2017 season come to an end in the opening round of the District 7B tournament on Monday, February 27th, in Elkton.  The Cardinals fell to the Elkton-Lake Benton Elks 46-36.

The Cardinals was able to get a first quarter lead and led 9-8 at the first break.  The Elks grabbed the lead heading into halftime at 20-19.  Elkton-Lake Benton started to pull away in the third quarter as they outscored the Cardinals 15-7 for a 35-26 lead heading into the final quarter.  The Elks then also outscored St Mary 11-10 in the final quarter for the win.

Luke Brown led the Cardinals with nine points.  Zach Geraets added seven points.  Weston Geraets had six points, Connor Libis finished with five points, and Max Herber tossed in four points.

St Mary ends its season with a record of 8-13.

2017 SD Legislative Sessions – Dan Ahlers Week 7 Update

dan_ahlersGreetings from Pierre. Its crunch time at the capitol. We had cross-over, Appropriations sub-committees reviewed department budgets and I will give an update on some of the more interesting bills.

Cross-over was Thursday. This day is when all bills must be out of the house of origin. House bills out of the House and vice versa. Legislators are like high school students that wait until Sunday to finish homework due on Monday. Consequently, the House worked until 9:20 p.m. and the Senate until 6:30 p.m. on Thursday to get its work done.

Appropriations sub-committees started meeting this past week with departments to evaluate budgets. So far, we have adopted sub-committee recommendations for the governor’s office, lieutenant governor, office of economic development, state auditor, state treasurer and the PUC. Many of these departments have small budgets, so the reviews do not take much time. Appropriations must find $25 million in the 2017 and nearly $30 million in the 2018 in order to balance the budget. Most of 2017 will be accomplished with one time savings like the closure of STAR Academy. The savings from the closure will be approximately $2 million. Some of the savings will come from department suggestions and a reduction in current spending for the remainder of the fiscal year. Any deficit left will most likely come from reserves. For 2018, Appropriations and its sub-committees are eliminating most of the department’s program expansions. Education will get its mandatory increase of .3%. Our service providers will receive no increase. This approach will eliminate most of the deficit. Any remaining deficit will most likely mean program cuts.

Here is an update on some bills of interest. HB 1076, the government accountability board, passed the House by a vote of 64 to 3. Email your Senators and ask for their support. This is an excellent bill and has the support of the Attorney General and Secretary of State. SB 54 from the Secretary of State’s office addresses campaign finance was amended and passed the Senate by a vote of 19 to 16. Unfortunately, this bill does very little to limit campaign donations like IM-22. Attempts to amend the bill failed. We will try to amend again in the House. It is important that the limits in this bill reflect those in IM-22. Legislators should respect the will of the voters. Finally, SB 55 known as the “Science Bill” would have allowed teachers to teach non-scientific theory in place of actual science. This bill failed in House Education and was deferred to the 41st legislative day 11 to 4.

Library Continues to Thrive in Dell Rapids

LibraryDedication-2Dell Rapids Carnegie Library Director Brittany Moeller spoke to the Dell Rapids City Council during their regular meeting on Tuesday, February 21st.  She provided an update to the council on the happenings of the library and painted a picture of continued success since the renovations were completed in March of 2015.

Moeller reported that the library just completed their winter story time sessions that lasted a total of eight weeks in the months of December and January.  Around 150 children participated in the story time sessions.  Moeller and the library staff are getting ready for their spring time story sessions which will begin on March 6th.  Moeller also mentioned that over 80 children took part in their Valentine’s Day craft, which is the most they’ve had since doing the event.

The library has also seen many daycare providers bring children through.  Busy Blessing daycare has been bringing around 20 children through the library once week over the past couple of months.  The library has also seen children from Next Generation Childcare and Learning Circle pre-school.

Moeller then reported that the library will be partnering with the senior citizen center to provide technology classes.  They are looking to offer a couple of different courses including a beginners computer class, a more advance computer class, and sessions on smart phones and tablets/e-readers.  They hope to be starting those sessions soon and more details will be provided in the near future.  The library is also getting ready for their summer reading program, which will officially start in June, but they are planning for some kick-off events that will take place in May.

The library also continues to see new memberships.  Moeller said that they have had about 10 new members join since the beginning of 2017, but she anticipates they will get a big jump in new memberships when school is out for the summer.  She told the council that is typically when they get most of their new memberships since they send flyers and information home with children from both Dell Rapids public and Dell Rapids St Mary.
