Donna Overvaag

overvaag picDonna R. Overvaag, 87, of Dell Rapids passed away on Saturday, November 25, 2017 at the Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls. Her funeral service was 11:00 a.m. on Monday, December 4, 2017 in Willow Creek Lutheran Church, Dell Rapids with Pastor Tom Stadem officating. Interment was in the Willow Creek Cemetery. Visitation with the family present was from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 3, 2017 at Kahler Funeral Home.

Donna Rae Scott was born on November 3, 1930 at White, SD, the daughter of Alvin and Nellie (Denison) Scott.  She grew up near White and attended country school. She attended White High School and graduated. She started working for the Brookings Hospital in 1948 and attended the nursing program at South Dakota State University for two years. She graduated from the Sioux Valley Hospital School of Nursing in 1951. She worked as an administrator at the Tri-State Memorial Hospital in Valley Springs for three years. Donna married Milton Overvaag on February 28, 1958 in Ivanhoe, MN. They made their home on a farm west of Dell Rapids. She worked at the Dell Rapids Community Hospital starting as a staff nurse and retiring in 1990 as the assistant administrator. Milton died in 1998. Donna then worked part time at Terrace Manor Nursing Home until 2000.

She was a member of Willow Creek Lutheran Church, the SD Nursing Association and the American organization of Nurse Executives.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Stanley and sister, Gloria.

Donna is survived by her daughters, Tracy (Ed) Overvaag-Akin of Houston, TX ; Shelly (Steve) Bahmuller of Apple Valley, MN; Laurie (Scott) Borshak of Apple Valley, MN and Lisa (Daniel) Scott of Willmar, MN; her eleven grandchildren; her six great-grandchildren; her sister, Thelma Pierce of Haslet, TX and her extended family and many friends.

Bruce Mellendorf

Bruce D. Mellendorf, 90, of Dell Rapids, passed away on Sunday, November 26, 2017 at his home. There will be a graveside service for Bruce in the Britton Cemetery at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, December 1, 2017.

Bruce was born on August 26, 1927 in Rochester, Michigan, the son of Albert and Elsie Mellendorf. He worked in the boating industry most of his life. He was preceded in death by his parents, his son and daughter-in-law, his grandson and his sister.

He is survived by his wife, Marge of Dell Rapids and his step-son, Jeff.
Funeral arrangements are under the care of Kahler Funeral Home.

Dell Rapids School Vandalized

DellRapidsHighSchoolDuring the Dell Rapids City Council regular meeting on Monday, November 20th, Minnehaha County Sheriff’s Deputy Kellen Weidner gave a report of vandalism of the Dell Rapids High School.  Officer Weidner reported the vandalism took place during the night of Sunday, November 19th. Nazi graffiti was spray-painted on the side of the building.

“We are aware of it.  It’s something that is happening throughout the county, mostly in Sioux Falls,” Weidner said.  “If there’s any businesses or anything that happen to get any of that graffiti, make sure to contact us immediately.  That way we can keep going on that case.  All of the deputies are aware of it.”

Weidner also reported that the Minnehaha County Sheriff’s Office deputies are doing their best to be out trying to see people who might be out after hours.

Public Meeting Date Set for SE Project

DellRapidsTowerThe city of Dell Rapids will be having a public meeting at St Mary’s Catholic Church on Monday, December 11th for the south east infrastructure project.  The meeting will take place in the Parish Hall starting at 6:00 p.m. with a question and answer period with city administration.  The city’s slide show presentation will begin at 7:00 p.m.

A total of 145 property owners will be affected by this project.  A cover letter was sent to each property owner about the meeting to hear about the project and answer questions.  Letters for potential assessment to the property owners for the project have also been sent.

This project is to replace water and sewer lines in this section of the community, and then replace streets and add curb, gutter and sidewalks to areas that do not have it currently.  The area of the project will run south of 7th St to 3rd st and east of Garfield Ave to Beach Ave.SEProjectMap

“This is a big one.  This is an estimated $6.5 million project with about $800,000 in assessments associated with it.” said City Administrator Justin Weiland during the Dell Rapids City Council meeting on Monday, November 20th.  The assessed values are for curb, gutter, and approaches on properties that don’t currently have them in place.

“This is an investment and an improvement to our community. Obviously they are going to have to buy in. We want this meeting to provide the people the information they need,” said Dell Rapid Mayor Tom Earley.  “This is another critical point in the development of this community, and it’s something that needs to happen.”

The tentative timeline of this project will be in 2019 and 2020.  Trent Bruce of DGR mentioned during the council meeting that some sophisticated railroad crossings and likelihood of rock blasting that will have to be addressed during the project.  He also mentioned that giving contractors more time to do a project generally results in favorable bids for the project.

“This is an introductory meeting to let them (property owners) know that this is coming down the pipe,” Weiland said.

 

Pink Ladies “Christmas for Kids” Fundraiser Hoping for Another Big Year

The annual Pink Ladies “Christmas for Kids” fundraiser auction and raffle will be held on Friday, December 8th, and organizers of the fundraiser are hoping for another big year.  This year’s event will be held again at Norby’s.  The meat raffle will begin at 5:00 p.m., live auction will start at 7:00 p.m., and raffle items will be available until 9:00 p.m.

The Pink Ladies dart team that puts together this fundraiser consists of a group of about 20 ladies.  Their goal is to make this a very memorable event every year to help families of Dell Rapids by donating funds raised to the ESA “Christmas for Our Kids” project.  They also have a goal to try to raise a larger amount then the year before.

“The last four years I have been on this committee, it is such an amazing feeling to wake up the day after the benefit and know that I made a difference, and I helped make a child smile,” said committee member Serena Campbell.

Last year’s fundraiser made $13,760 that went to help families in the Dell Rapids community.  A small percentage of the money raised is also donated to two other non-profit organizations.  One of the organizations is the Dell Rapids food pantry, and the committee then decides on another group to receive donations.

The year’s event already had quite a few great items up for auction or raffle.  Some of them include two 55″ televisions, 1/2 processed hog donated by Bob’s Meat in Chester, an ATV trailer donated by DTC, a Terry Peak get-away, a week stay at a condo in Orlando, FL, Grand Falls Casino package, multiple gift card donations, and many, many more great items.

“Being a part of this committee has been such an amazing experience.  I cannot begin to give enough thanks to all the businesses and individuals who donate to this auction, whether it be an item for the auction, the raffle, or a cash donation.  It is all greatly appreciated.  We could not make this a success without Lee Burggraff and his staff donating their time the night of the event as our auctioneer,” Campbell said.

Donations for the event will be accepted up until the day of the event.

The “Christmas for Our Kids” project is lead by the local chapter of ESA (an international women’s service organization).  The ESA chapter handles all of the referrals for the “Christmas for Our Kids” as well as delivering the gifts to the families.  Contacts for the ESA “Christmas for Our Kids” project are Brenda O’Hara and Lori Morris.

Dell Rapids Connections Sponsors Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Presentation

ConnectionsSuicidePreventionThe Dell Rapids Connections group continued work started by a Dell Rapids student early this year.  The group sponsored a mental health and suicide prevention presentation on Monday, November 20th.  The presentation included two speakers.  Angela Drake from Tea and Tod Lacey from Dell Rapids both spoke during the “Talk Saves Lives” presentation.  Both speakers are parents who have lost a child to suicide.

The presentation was held for students and parents throughout the day.  Students saw the presentation in the afternoon during their school day.  Parents were invited to a supper meal provided by the Dell Rapids Connections group and heard the presentation Monday evening at the Dell Rapids Middle School commons area.

The Dell Rapids Connections group sponsored the event in an effort to continue the work started by Sydney LaCoursiere.  LaCoursiere put together an event in October during the Dell Rapids vs Flandreau football game.  A total of 112 luminary bags were placed around the football field and fans attending the game were given a flier that talked about mental heath issues.  Her desire to get awareness out to the public is due the number of suicides the Dell Rapids community has faced over the last 10 years.

JR’s Alterations & Crafts Holds Ribbon Cutting

JRAlterationRibbonCutting2017After selling items as a vendor in another downtown Dell Rapids store, JR’s Alterations & Crafts held a ribbon cutting and open house to officially open up their own storefront on Friday, November 17th.  JR’s Alterations & Crafts is open in downtown Dell Rapids at 414 E. 4th St.  The store held a grand opening on Wednesday, November 1st.

The owner of JR’s Alterations & Crafts, Janet DeGraw, has sold items in Dell Rapids for quite some time.  DeGraw was a vendor with Alliecat Creations for a year before moving to their own space.  DeGraw had also attended a few craft shows in Dell Rapids over the years as well.

JR’s Alterations & Crafts provides clothing alterations and repair as well as sells a variety of arts and crafts items.  They also plan on hosting some arts and crafts events.

DeGraw announced extended holiday hours on their Facebook page.  Starting on Monday, November 20th, they play to be open from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays ending on December 23rd.  The store will be closed on Thanksgiving Day as well as Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.  Regular store hours in Dell Rapids will be 10:00 a.m. to 5:45 p.m. Monday through Friday.  Saturday hours will be 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Vera (Sorenson) (Ulrickson) Gilbertson

Vera-GilbertsonVera (Ulrickson) Gilbertson, age 96, died Thursday, November 9, 2017 at Good Samaritan Society Canton. Funeral services were held Monday, November 13 at Redeemer Free Lutheran Church in Canton, SD. On-line condolences may be left at the Anderson Funeral Home Website.

Vera was born on May 16, 1921 on a farm near Garretson, SD to Otto & Hilma (Julson) Sorenson.   She attended country school, Garretson High School and graduated from Augustana Academy in Canton, SD. In her youth, she was active in her church, Luther League, and 4-H.

She married Homer Ulrickson on January 5, 1943. Helen, Gregg, and Altie were born to this union. The family farmed south of Canton until retiring in 1974. After retiring, the couple ran an antique shop out of their home west of Newton Hills. Homer died in 1981.

She married Arne Gilbertson on August 16, 1985. The couple resided in Canton. Vera was a founding member of Redeemer Free Lutheran Church where she was active in bible group, Ladies Aid, and sang in the choir. She also volunteered at the Canton Senior Center. She enjoyed doing hardanger, crafts, braiding rugs, writing poetry, sewing, growing roses, and spending time with family.   Arne died in 2007.

She is survived by her daughters, Helen (Richard) Paetow, Sioux Falls, SD and Altie (Norm) Rasmussen, Beresford, SD; son, Gregg (Wendy) Ulrickson, Canton, SD; step-daughters, Gloria (Alan) Rops, Lennox, SD and Julie ( Tom) Schirber, Spearfish, SD; step-sons, Mike (Melinda) Gilbertson, Dell Rapids, SD and Curt (Debbie) Gilbertson, Hudson, SD.

Dell Rapids St Mary Holds Fall Sports Banquet

Dell Rapids St Mary High School held a fall sports team awards banquet on Tuesday, November 14th.  A potluck meal was served at 6:00 p.m. for the football, volleyball, competitive cheer, and cross country teams.  During the banquet, several Dell Rapids St Mary athletes earned awards.  Congratulations to all the award winners!

Jeffrey Schuch Signs with DWU

JeffreyShuchDWU2017Senior Jeffrey Schuch became the fifth Quarrier athlete to sign a letter of intent to play collegiate sports in a week when he signed with Dakota Wesleyan University on Thursday, November 16th.  Schuch will be joining the Tiger men’s basketball team next fall in Mitchell, SD.

Schuch finished his junior with a total of 305 points, 206 rebounds, 46 assists, and 45 blocked shots.  He shot 56% from the field, 44% from three point area, and 59% from the free-throw line.  In addition, Schuch was named to the Dak-12 Conference 2nd Team in 2016-2017.  Schuch has a total of 453 points, 358 rebounds, 81 blocked shots, and 75 assists in three years of Quarrier basketball.

Schuch was also a member of the Quarrier football team this past fall.
