Quarrier Volleyball Drops Close Battle to West Central

Starting their 2019 season at home, the Dell Rapids Quarrier volleyball team lost a hard-fought, close battle to the West Central Trojans on Thursday, August 29th.  The Trojans defeated the Quarriers 25-18, 20-25, 27-25, 27-25 for the win.

West Central grabbed the momentum early in the first set and raced to an 11-4 lead.  The lead grew to 23-12, but Dell Rapids was able cut the lead down to 24-18 before West Central took the win in the first set.  After a 4-4 tie early in the second set, the Quarriers took a 12-8 lead.  The Trojans tied the game at 15-15, and the two teams went back-and-forth over the next few points.  Dell Rapids pulled away late at 22-18 and closed out the set 25-20 to tie the match at 1-1.

The third set went back-and-forth early, but by the middle of the set the Trojans found themselves in the lead at 15-10.  West Central continued to maintain a five-point lead at 22-17, but Dell Rapids went on a 7-1 run to take a 24-23 lead.  The Trojans scored the next two points to retake the lead at 25-24.  After a 25-25 tie score, the Trojans scored the final two points for the win. 

The Quarriers took momentum early in the fourth set and looked to be headed towards forcing a fifth set leading 16-9.  The Trojans, however, went on a 9-2 scoring run to tie the set at 18-18.  Dell Rapids recovered to take a 24-20 lead, but again the Trojans went on a late run of five straight points to take a 25-24 lead.  The Quarriers tied the set at 25-25, but West Central scored the final two points for the match win.

Dell Rapids was led by Kyra Graham with six kills.  Olivia Prasek added five kills.  Mallory Haak finished with 22 set assists, seven digs, and two ace serves.  Gabi Rus had 12 digs.  Graham also had two blocks, and Kenzie Garry had a block. 

The Quarriers (0-1) will play in the Canton Invite on Saturday, August 31st.

Cardinal Volleyball Wins Season Opener

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal volleyball team opened up their 2019 season with a five-set match win over the Alcester-Hudson Cubs at home on Thursday, August 29th.

The Cubs opened the match with a 25-13 win, but the Cardinals came back strong to win the next two sets by scores of 25-19 and 25-17.  Alcester-Hudson won the fourth set by a score of 25-20 to force a fifth and final set.  St Mary won the set 15-8 to win the match.

Ella Heinitz finished the night with eight kills for the Cardinals.  Paige Bunkers and four ace serves, and Maya Heinitz tallied 10 digs on the night.

St Mary will be at home again on Tuesday, September 3rd.  The Cardinals will host the De Smet Bulldogs, and the match can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Quarrier Boys Golf 9th at Home Tourney

The Dell Rapids Quarrier boys golf team hosted the Dell Rapids Invite at Rocky Run Golf Course on Wednesday, August 28th, two days after it was originally scheduled.  The tournament was supposed to be held on Monday, August 26th, but rain in the morning forced the postponement to Wednesday.

Dell Rapids finished ninth as a team with a total score of 391.  Sioux Falls Christian won the team title with a total of 318.  Vermillion and Parkston both finished with team scores of 341.  Lennox finished at 354.

Karsen Welbig had the low score for the Quarriers with a round of 91.  Brandon Kubly and Brady Larson both finished with a 97.  Carter Traill had a round of 106, and Lucas Berg finished with a round of 109.  Alex VandeGriend of Sioux Falls Christian took home the top spot with a round of 71.

Quarriers and Cardinals Open Competitive Cheer Season

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals hosted the St Mary Invite on Monday, August 26th to start the 2019 competitive cheer season.  The Dell Rapids Quarriers, Deubrook Dolphins, and Arlington/Lake Preston Badgers also participated in the invite.

The Quarriers placed first with an average score 129.25 in their two performances.  The Cardinals placed second with an average score of 125.  Arlington/Lake Preston placed third with average score of 112, and Deubrook was fourth with an average score of 101.

Dell Rapids will be at the Watertown Invite on Tuesday, September 3rd.  The St Mary Cardinals will be off until Tuesday, September 10th when they will participate in the Dell Rapids Invite.

Cardinals Cruise to Big Win over Redhawks

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals scored 54 unanswered points on their way to a 60-18 season-opening win against the Estelline/Hendricks Redhawks on Friday, August 23rd at Rickemen Field in Dell Rapids.

The Redhawks scored on the opening drive of the game for an early 6-0 lead.  St Mary also scored on their opening drive in the first quarter to tie the game at 6-6 with just over four minutes to play in the quarter.  Estelline/Hendricks scored again with just one second left in the quarter to take a 12-6 lead after one quarter of play.

Connor Libis connected with Weston Geraets for a 50-year touchdown pass on the very first play of the second quarter, and then the Cardinals scored the two-point conversion for a 14-12 lead ten seconds into the second quarter.  St Mary went on to score 18 more points which was capped off by a 52-yard screen pass from Libis to Eli Longville to close out the second quarter for a 32-12 halftime lead.

The offense continued to roll for St Mary into the second half.  The Cardinals scored 18 more unanswered points and led 60-12 with 6:30 to play in the game.  Estelline/Hendricks got a late score to finish the game.

The Cardinals will be at home again on Friday, August 30th when they host the Castlewood Warriors at Rickeman Field.

Quarrier Boys Golf Competes in Third Straight Day

The Dell Rapids Quarriers competed in their third tournament in as many days on Wednesday, August 21st.

The Quarriers traveled to Madison on Tuesday, August 20th for the Madison Invite.  Dell Rapids finished fifth as a team with a team score of 380.  Zach McKee finished 14th individually with a round of 90.  Karsen Welbig had a 94 with Lucas Berg right behind him with a round of 95.  Brady Larson finished with a 101, Brandon Kubly had a 102, and Tyler Tjaden finished with 128.

The boys then traveled to North Sioux City for the Dakota Valley Invite on Wednesday.  The team finished sixth overall with a team score of 363.  Welbig placed 10th individually with an 83, and Kubly finished 13th overall with a round of 85.  Berg had a 95, Larson finished with a 100, and Carter Traill had a 110.

The Quarriers will be back on the golf course on Monday, August 26th for the Dell Rapids Invite at Rocky Run Golf Course.

Quarrier Boys Golf Place 3rd in First Tourney of Season

The Dell Rapids Quarrier boys golf team placed third at the Sioux Valley Invite on Monday, August 19th in Volga.  Dell Rapids finished with a team score of 359.  Sioux Valley placed first with a team score of 357, and Aberdeen Roncalli was second with a score of 358.

Brandon Kubly placed 11th individually with a round of 87.  Karsen Welbig also had a round of 87 and placed 12th.  Lucas Berg had a round of 91.  Brady Larson finished with a round of 94.  Zach McKee finished with a 97, and Carter Traill ended the day with a 102.

Dell Rapids will play again Tuesday, August 20th in Madison and Wednesday, August 21st in North Sioux City.

Nancy Hauglid

Nancy Hauglid, 65, of Sioux Falls, passed away on Friday, August 16, 2019 at her home under hospice care. Her Memorial Service will begin at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 21, 2019 at Kahler Funeral Home. Visitation with the family present will be one hour prior to the start of the service. Inurnment will be in the St. Mary Cemetery, Dell Rapids. www.kahlerfh.com

Nancy Hauglid was born on August 8, 1954, the daughter of Norman and Rosemary Hauglid (Eulberg).  Nancy graduated from Saint Mary’s High School and the Lake Area Vocational Technical School. Nancy worked as a medical records clerk, hotel clerk, construction supervisor, and a book keeper.

Nancy is proceeded in death by her mother and brother, Steve.

She is survived by her father, Norman of Dell Rapids; her siblings, Greg (Jo) Hauglid of Dell Rapids, Alice Cordell of Atlanta, GA, Don (Mary Ann) Hauglid of Tulsa, OK, Larry (Tena) Hauglid of Dell Rapids,  John (Beck) Hauglid of Colman and Mark (Joni) Hauglid of Colman.  She was a loving aunt to many  nieces and nephews, her special friends, Diane  and JJ and  her many other friends and extended family. She dearly loved Maggie and Brody, her dogs.

With her fun loving, outgoing personality and sometimes mischievous qualities, Nancy will leave a lasting impression for many to remember.

Donia Pitts

Donia M. Pitts, age 91, of Colton, passed away on Wednesday, August 14, 2019, at her home. Funeral services were at 2:00 PM Monday, August 19, 2019 at First Reformed Church in Colton. Visitation was from 4:00 to 6:00 PM Sunday at the church.

Donia was born on August 4, 1928 in Burleson County, Texas to John and Nettie (Lawrence) Lewis. She moved to Colton at the age of 15 to live with her aunt Katie and attended Colton High School. She married Robert Pitts on August 10, 1946, in Flagstaff, Arizona. They moved to Sioux Falls in 1949 and finally settled in Colton in 1951. Donia worked at McKennan Hospital and Dow Rummel as a nurse aid. She also provided daycare for many years. Robert passed away on May 16, 2017. Donia was a very devoted Christian her entire life and was always a very active member of the church.

Grateful for having shared her life are her children, Mary (Dave) Cuzick, Spring Valley, CA, Lonnie (Connie) Pitts, Sioux Falls, Richard (Sue) Pitts, Colton, Carol (Ken) Foster, Colton, Lawrence “Larry” (Shirley) Pitts, Garretson, Phillis Morris (Brian), Sioux Falls, and Annette (Tim) Luke, Sioux Falls; nineteen grandchildren; twenty five great-grandchildren; brother, Darol Lewis; special cousins, Martha Pitts and Lurlene Runyan; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Donia was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Robert; son, Steve; sister, Delores; brother, George and special cousin, Edward.

Canova and Mogen Ends Mudcat Season in Quarterfinals

MudcatsLogoThe Canova Gang ended the tournament run for the Dell Rapids Mudcats on Friday, August 16th in Mitchell. Canova advanced to the semifinals of the 2019 South Dakota Class B Amateur Baseball Tournament with a 7-0 win over the Mudcats.

The game was scoreless through the first four innings of the game. The Gang scored all seven of their runs in the bottom of the fifth on six hits and one Mudcat error in the inning. Dell Rapids was held to just three total hits in the game. Josh Roemen had two of the hits while Grant Olson picked up the other hit.

Brett Mogen, a Dell Rapids PBR pickup player for Canova, earned the win for the Gang on the mound. He pitched a complete game with three hits allowed along with two walks and 10 strikeouts. Blake Svoboda took the loss for the Mudcats pitching four and 1/3 innings giving up seven runs, four earned, on six hits with five walks and four strikeouts. John Spaeth pitched the final three and 2/3 innings giving up three hits and one walk with two strikeouts.

Canova lost in the semifinal round to Garretson 5-0. The game lasted into the early morning hours of Sunday, August 18th due to the storms that rolled across South Dakota on Saturday evening. Alexandria then defeated Garretson 2-0 to claim the Class B title on Sunday afternoon.
