Early Lead Enough for Mudcats

MudcatsLogoA six-run second inning and a four-run fourth inning is all the Dell Rapids Mudcats needed to earn a spot in the quarterfinals of the 2019 South Dakota Class B State Tournament. Dell Rapids defeated Four Corners by a score of 16-6 in eight innings on Wednesday, August 14th in Mitchell to advance in the tournament.

After Four Corners scored a run in the top of the second inning, Dell Rapids scored six runs on six hits in the bottom of the inning. Grant Olson, Jared Donahue, Josh Roemen, and Nate Henry all had RBI hits in the inning. Four Corners cut the lead to 6-5 by scoring a run in the top of the third inning and three more runs in the top of the fourth. The Mudcats responded with a four-inning of their own in the fourth inning to extend the lead to 10-5. Travis Peters and Olson had RBI hits, and Dell Rapids also scored two more runs on an error.

Johnson drove in another Mudcat run in the top of the sixth inning. Chad Hunt and Mark Houck brought home three more runs for Dell Rapids in the seventh to make the score 14-5. Four Corners scored in the top of the eighth, but the Mudcats scored two more times on an error and RBI hit by Nate Henry to end the game on the 10-run rule.

Eight Mudcat hitters had a multi-hit game. Houck and Roemen both had three hits and two RBIs. Hunt also had three hits with an RBI. Henry and Olson finished with two hits and two RBIs apiece. Peters and Donahue both had two hits and an RBI. Johnson had a hit and RBI. Story finished with two hits in the game. Jordan Johnson pitched four innings giving up five runs, four earned, on seven hits with two walks and five strikeouts. Andrew Wegner pitched three innings giving up just one hit and two walks with three strikeouts. Austin Henry pitched one inning giving up an earned run on three hits with one walk and three strikeouts.

The Mudcats will play Canova in the quarterfinals on Friday, August 16th. First pitch is scheduled for about 7:30 p.m. in Mitchell.

Dell Rapids Chamber Holds 2nd Annual Wine and Wander

DCIM100MEDIADJI_0003.JPGThe Dell Rapids Chamber of Commerce held their 2nd Annual “Wine and Wander” event on Saturday, August 10th in downtown Dell Rapids.

Over 200 wristbands were sold during the event.  Attendees were able to walk around downtown between different tents to sample wines and craft beers from several local wineries and breweries.  Those that bought a wrist band and visited all the tents were able to enter into a prize package, and they also were given a commemorative wine glass from the event.

The “Wine and Wander” also featured live music and food from Cricket’s Catering, Gold Star Kettle Corn, Papa’s Pub, and LaDelle and Fourth Coffeehouse as well as other retail vendors.

Dell Rapids Mudcats Win in Opening Round of State Tournament

MudcatsLogoThe Dell Rapids Mudcats won their opening round game of the 2019 South Dakota Class B State Amateur Baseball Tournament on Sunday, August 11th, at Cadwell Park in Mitchell.  Dell Rapids defeated the Dimock/Emery Raptors 10-4 to advance to the second round.

The Raptors scored first in the top of the first inning, but Dell Rapids answered with two runs in the bottom of the first inning on a two-run double by Mark Houck.  Dimock/Emery scored another run int he top of the second inning to tie the game and added another run in the third inning for a 3-2 lead.

The Mudcats responded with six unanswered runs to go ahead for good in the game.  Dell Rapids scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning on an RBI double by Grant Olson and an RBI single by Aaron Johnson.  The Mudcats then added four more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, all with two outs.  Houck scored on an error, Travis Peters had an RBI single, and Olson drove home two more runs with another double.  Dell Rapids added two more runs in the eighth inning on a two-run single by Houck to put away the Raptors.

Houck finished with two hits and four RBIs.  Olson had two doubles and three RBIs in the game.  Johnson and Peters both had two hits and an RBI.  Chad Hunt, Josh Roemen, and Jimmy Bauer also had two hits apiece.  Nate Henry and Trevor Freudenthal also had hits.

Donahue took the win pitching six innings while giving up three runs, two earned, on four hits with four walks and seven strikeouts.  Blake Svoboda pitched the final three innings giving up an unearned run on four hits with a walk and two strikeouts.

The Mudcats will play Four Corners in the late game on Wednesday night, August 14th.

Wilson, Terry obit photoTerry Alan Wilson, “Willie”, age 63, died Thursday, August 1, 2019 in Sioux Falls, SD.

Funeral services will begin at 10:00 AM Saturday, August 10, 2019 at East Nidaros Lutheran Church, rural Baltic, SD.

Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 PM Friday, August 9, 2019 at Minnehaha Funeral Home in Dell Rapids, SD.

He is survived by his brothers, Thomas R. Wilson, Dell Rapids, SD and Charles E. Wilson, Volga, SD and sister, Cynthia J. Wilson, Houston, TX and extended family of the Wilson and Brende families to include several cousins, aunts and uncles. He is preceded in death by his parents, Henry R. Wilson and Lillian A. Wilson.

Terry was a graduate of Dell Rapids High School in 1975 and earned a Bachelor’s degree at Nettleton College in Sioux Falls, SD. Trademarks of Terry included persistence, determination, and an enduring spirit which resulted in employment at Citibank where he worked several years and then progressed to Target National Bank where he worked until 2017.

As a child, Terry was in Boy Scouts which was in line with the values that Terry was taught and held throughout his life. His adult hobbies included the pursuit of growing the family tree through his genealogical work, building model planes as well as assembling other model kits, John Wayne movies, watching old Westerns, and gardening at the Dell Rapids homestead where he took great pride in how the rhubarb grew and having the best looking yard on the block. Terry was well known for his compassion toward others and love of conversation over a cup of coffee at the Fryin’ Pan with longtime friends and never meeting a stranger.

The family is grateful to Terry’s friends who provided the love and support throughout his life. He talked about his friends often who added much joy to each day as he looked forward to talking with you again. His parting words were: “Have a good night and a better tomorrow.”

Lisa Cole

coleLisa M. (Fewings) Cole, 47, of Dell Rapids, passed away on Sunday, August 4, 2019 at the Dells Nursing and Rehab Center in Dell Rapids. Her Memorial Service will begin at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, August 9, 2019 at Kahler Funeral Home. Inurnment will be held at a later date at Green Mound Cemetery in Leola, SD.

Lisa grew up in Leola, SD and attended Grade School , then moved to Watertown,SD in 1980 and attended St. Martin’s Lutheran Grade School , then attended Watertown Public High School and graduated. After high school, she attended Northern State University in Aberdeen before moving back to Watertown where she attended Lake Area Vo Tech for child development. In 1993 she moved to Sioux Falls where she worked various jobs. She married Joseph Cole, to this union, a son, Mark was born. The couple later divorced.

Lisa was diagnosed with Muscular Dystrophy in July of 1998. She became a resident of Meadow Assisted Living in Sioux Falls before moving to the Dells Nursing and Rehab Center in Dell Rapids.

She is preceded in death by an infant son, Cody, grandparents, Leonard and Edna Hottman and Howard and Eldora Fewings.

She is survived by her parents, Robert and Deloris Fewings of Watertown; her son, Mark Cole of Bismarck, ND and her brother, Stacey Robert Fewings of St. Pual, MN.

Dell Rapids Legion Season Ends at State

DellsBaseballLogo_DRBAThe defending State B Legion champions had their season come to an end at the 2019 South Dakota Class B Legion State Tournament on Saturday, August 3rd.  Dell Rapids lost their opening round game against Lennox on Friday, August 2nd, and then dropped their second game to Beresford on Saturday.

Dell Rapids opened the state tournament against the host team Lennox on Friday and lost a 5-4 game in nine innings.  Dell Rapids got on the board first with a lead-off home run by Eddie Price to centerfield in the top of the second inning.  Jake Rechtenbaugh followed with a double and later scored on an RBI single by Brandon Geraets to give Dell Rapids a 2-0 lead.  The score remained 2-0 until the bottom of the third.  Lennox scored four times on three hits in the inning to take a 4-2 lead.

Dell Rapids got a run back in the top of the sixth inning.  Price started the inning with a single, and Geraets drove him home with a double to cut the lead to 4-3.  Dell Rapids tied the game in the seventh.  Keegan Miller drew a one-out walk, and Carter Gullickson followed with an RBI double to tie the game.  The score remained tied 4-4 until the bottom of the ninth inning.  Lennox loaded the bases with one out, and Jay Kirchner singled home the winning run.

Price and Geraets both had two hits in the game.  Geraets had two RBIs, while Price had one.  Gullickson also had a hit and an RBI.  Rechtenbaugh and Ty Wood each had a hit as well.  Price pitched the first 2 1/3 innings giving up four earned runs on three hits with six walks and two strikeouts.  Jake Steineke pitched the final six innings allowing an unearned run on three hits with three walks and eight strikeouts.

After having to wait a few hours due to rain delays, Dell Rapids faced an elimination game against Beresford on Saturday afternoon.  Beresford scored five runs in the first five innings and handed Dell Rapids a 5-1 loss.  Beresford scored a run in the first, a run in the third, and three runs in the fifth for a 5-0 lead.  Dell Rapids scored their lone run in the top of the seventh inning on an RBI double by Miller.

Gullickson finished the game with three hits.  Miller had a hit and RBI.  Price and Mason Goeken also had hits in the game.  Jon Wilhelmsen pitched six innings giving up five runs, four earned, on six hits with five walks and three strikeouts.

Dell Rapids finishes their 2019 season with a 24-9 record and a Region 2B Championship.

Dells Legion Heading Back to State

DellsBaseballLogo_DRBAThe defense of the state championship for Dell Rapids took another step in the right direction with a Region 2B Championship on Saturday, July 27th.  Dell Rapids defeated Madison 4-2 for the title to earn a spot in the 2019 South Dakota Legion Class B State Tournament.

Dell Rapids struck first in the bottom of the first inning.  Carter Gullickson hit a single to left field, and Eddie Price drove him home with a double later in the inning for the early 1-0 lead.  Madison took the lead in the top of the second inning.  They scored two runs on two passed balls with two outs to take the 2-1 lead.  The score remained 2-1 in favor of Madison until the bottom of the fifth inning.

Gullickson tied the game with a solo home run to center field to lead off the inning for Dell Rapids.  Jon Wilhelmsen, Eddie Price, and Jake Rechtenbaugh strung together three straight singles.  Wilhelmsen scored on the Rechtenbaugh hit to regain the lead at 3-2.  Price scored the fourth run on a fielder’s choice on a ball in play by Brandon Geraets.

Wilhelmsen kept Madison off balance in six strong innings.  He gave up two runs, both unearned, on one hit while walking three and striking out 15 batters.  Rechtenbaugh finished off the game with a 1-2-3 seventh inning including a strikeout.

Dell Rapids will open the state tournament on Friday, August 2nd against Lennox.  It will be the final game of the day and will start approximately 7:00 p.m.  The legion state tournament is being held in Lennox through Tuesday, August 6th.

Dell Rapids Legion Earns Spot in Region Championship

DellsBaseballLogo_DRBAThe Dell Rapids Legion baseball team picked up three wins in two days at the Region 2B tournament and have punched their ticket to the championship game.  Dell Rapids defeated Volga and Aurora on Tuesday night, July 23rd, and then Madison on Wednesday, July 24th in Garretson.

Dell Rapids started the tournament with a 19-1 win over Volga.  Dell Rapids scored four runs in the first inning, four runs in the second, and 10 runs in the third on their way to the win.  Nine different players had hits in the game.  Jon Wilhelmsen had three hits and four RBIs.  Logan Stone had three hits and an RBI.  Eddie Price has two hits and five RBIs.  Jake Rechtenbaugh had two hits and three RBIs.  Keegan Miller and Carter Gullickson both had two hits each.  Thane Hilmoe, Brandon Geraets, and Landon Ruesink each had a hit.  Stone pitched two innings giving up no runs on two hits with three strikeouts.  Jake Steineke pitched three innings giving up one earned run on two hits with one walk and five strikeouts.

Dell Rapids followed that win with a 14-4 victory over Aurora later Tuesday night.  Dell Rapids scored in every inning of the game, which included the first nine runs.  Wilhelmson had three more hits and four more RBIs in the second game.  Geraets also had three hits and an RBI.  Price and Ty Wood both had two hits and an RBI each.  Rechtenbaugh added a hit and two RBIs.  Gullickson and Hilmoe also had a hit.  Wood pitched four innings giving up four runs, one earned, on four hits with six walks and nine strikeouts.  Steineke pitched the final inning striking out all three batters.

With a trip to the championship game on the line Wednesday night, Dell Rapids cruised to an 8-1 win over Madison by scoring all eight of their runs in the first four innings.  Geraets had two hits and two RBIs, and Keegan Miller also had two hits.  Price finished with a hit and two RBIs.  Wilhelmsen and Wood both had a hit and an RBI.  Mason Goeken also had a hit.  Price pitched six innings giving up one earned run on four hits with three walks and 11 strikeouts.  Stone finished the game on the mound striking out two batters.

Dell Rapids will now play in the championship game on Saturday, July 27th at 4:00 p.m. in Garretson.

Dell Rapids 13/14 Teeners Take 3rd at State

The Dell Rapids 13/14 Teener team placed third at the 2019 South Dakota VFW 14U State Tournament held Friday, July 19th through Sunday, July 21st in Madison.

Dell Rapids opened the tournament with a 7-6 win over Elk Point-Jefferson on Friday.  Dell Rapids scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning taking advantage of an EPJ error and never trailed in the game.  After EPJ scored a run in the top of the second, Dell Rapids scored five times in the bottom of the fourth inning to take a 7-1 lead.  EPJ scored four times in the top of the sixth inning and one more in the seventh, but Dell Rapids was able to close out the game for the win.

Brayden Pankonen, Dylan Mathis, Will Jaton, Joe Rechtenbaugh, Chase Jones, and Evan Nelson all collected hits in the game.  Shane Ness and Mathis each had an RBI.  Pankonen pitched 3 2/3 innings giving up one earned run on four hits with two walks and a strikeout.  Jones pitched 2 1/3 innings giving up four earned runs on four hits with two walks and a strikeout.  Jaton closed out the game giving up an earned run on one with and a walk.

Dell Rapids then dropped the semifinal game against West Central by a score of 7-4 on Saturday.  Dell Rapids was only able to collect three hits in the game, and West Central took advantage of eight Dell Rapids errors.  West Central scored two runs in the top of the first inning for an early 2-0 lead.  Dell Rapids cut the lead in half after Rechtenbaugh scored on an error.  West Central, however, scored four runs on just one hit in the top of the fifth inning to extend the lead to 7-1.  Mathis scored on a balk in the bottom of the inning to cut the lead to 7-2.  Mathis then drove in two more runs with a double in the bottom of the seventh inning with one out to make the score 7-4, but West Central got the next two Dell Rapids hitters for the win.

Pankonen, Mathis, and CJ Smith had the three hits for Dell Rapids in the game.  Mathis had two RBIs in the game.  Jaton pitched 4 1/3 innings giving up five runs, three earned, on three hits with three walks and five strikeouts.  Smith pitched 1 2/3 innings giving up two runs, both unearned, on one hit and three walks.  Mathis pitched one inning giving up a hit.

Dell Rapids then closed out their state tournament experience with a tight 2-1 win over Spearfish on Sunday to take third place.  Dell Rapids had two runs on six hits with no errors, while Spearfish had one run on four hits with no errors.

Mathis scored on a passed ball for the first run of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning for Dell Rapids.  Mathis then hit an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth inning to drive home Pankonen for the second run.  Spearfish got their lone run in the top of the sixth inning.

Pankonen had two hits in the game, while Shane Ness, Mathis, Jaton, and Nelson all had one hit each.  Mathis had the lone RBI in the game for Dell Rapids.  Pankonen pitched a complete game giving up one earned run on four hits with one walk and seven strikeouts.

The third place finish brings the 2019 13/14 Teener season to an end for Dell Rapids.

Dell Rapids Youth Baseball has Champion and 4th Place Team at State

The Dell Rapids youth baseball program had a champion and a fourth place team at state tournaments held Friday, July 12th through Sunday, July 14th.  The Dell Rapids 12U team won their tournament held in Webster, SD.  The 10U team had a fourth place finish at their state tournament also held in Webster.

The 12U team began pool play on Friday with a win over Flandreau 14-2.  They followed that with a 10-1 over Lennox on Saturday.  Those two wins gave Dell Rapids the number one seed in the championship bracket on Sunday.  Dell Rapids started their day on Sunday with a win over Webster by a score of 13-0.  After a lightening strike and a two and a half hour rain delay, Dell Rapids defeated Winner 13-5 in the championship game.

The 10U team opened their tournament on Friday with two wins.  They defeated Worthing 10-0 and then beat Flandreau 11-0.  Dell Rapids received a bye in the first round of the championship bracket as the #1 seed via a coinflip with West Central, which gave Dell Rapids the day off on Saturday.  Dell Rapids fell to Lennox 9-4 in the semifinals on Sunday, and then lost to Flandreau 10-8 in the third place game.
