Trojan Volleyball Team Falls to Baltic

The West Central Trojan volleyball team fell to the Baltic Bulldogs at home on Tuesday, September 15th.  The Bulldogs won in four sets by scores of 25-20, 25-21, 27-29, and 25-16.

In the opening set of the match, Baltic was on fire and got out to a big 11-3 lead.  The Trojans tried to make a come back as they got within three points at 22-19, but Baltic was able to finish the set with a 25-20 victory.  In the second set, the Bulldogs got out to an 11-5 advantage.  Baltic led from that point forward, but West Central did pull within three points again at 24-21, before falling 25-21.

The third set was back-and-forth early.  With the set tied 12-12, West Central went on a four-point run for a 16-12 lead.   The lead grew to five points at 21-16.  Baltic made a run and tied the set at 22-22.   Baltic took the lead at 24-23, and again at 25-24 before the Trojans took a 26-25 advantage.  Baltic tied the score at 26-26 and 27-27.  West Central got the final two points for a 29-27 win to force a fourth set.

West Central seemed to be riding the momentum of the third set as they took an early 9-4 lead in the fourth set.  The Bulldogs, however, came fighting back and tied the set at 11-11.   They continued their run and took at 19-14 lead late in the set.   The Bulldogs went on to take the fourth set 25-16 and won the match.

Cassidy Siemonsma finished the night with 20 kills and two blocks.  Brooke Opitz had 33 set assists, 24 digs, and three ace serves.

West Central (2-5) will host Chamberlain on Thursday, September 17th.

Trojan Girls Soccer 1-1 in Last Two Matches

After suffering their first loss of the season on September 8th, the West Central Trojan girls soccer team split in their last two matches.

The Trojans hosted the Groton Area Tigers on Friday, September 11th.  West Central found themselves back in the win column with a 2-1 victory.  They then hosted the Dakota Valley Panthers on Tuesday, September 15th.  The Panthers scored the only goal of the game on a penalty kick for a 1-0 win.

West Central (6-2-3) will travel to Sioux Falls to play the Sioux Falls Christian Chargers on Tuesday, September 22nd.

Peters and Hargreaves Have Another Strong Meet

Brie Peters and Nate Hargreaves continue to have a solid season for the Tri-Valley Mustang varsity cross country team.  The two ran at the Sioux Falls Charger Invitational on Tuesday, September 15th.

Peters had another top 10 finish by placing 8th with a time of 21:37.28.  Hargreaves had his second fastest time of the year and placed 17th with a time of 18:41.49.

The next cross country meet will be in Dell Rapids on Wednesday, September 23rd.

West Central Girls and Boys Cross Country Finish 8th in Sioux Falls

The West Central Trojans girls and boys cross country teams participated in the Sioux Falls Charger Invitational on Tuesday, September 15th.

Both the girls and boys team placed 8th.  The girls team finished with 126 points.  Sioux Falls Christian won with 26 points.  Harrisburg was second with 50 points, and Milbank placed third with 59 points.

Reagan Stallman (31st) had a time of 23:21.81.  Abbie Cain (32nd) finished in a time of 23:31.86.  Paige Pilker (41st) had a time of 24:29.81.  Drew Caffrey (42nd) had a time of 24:33.02.  Sayda Rolfson (45th) finished with a time of 24:56.13.  Kayln Kunz (48th) had a time of 25:18.74.

The boys team finished with a total of 119 points.  Sioux Falls Christian also won the boys team title with 14 points.  Harrisburg was second with 46 points, and Vermillion was third with 51 points.

Justin Schumacher (23rd) had a time of 18:58.44.  Ben Strunk (38th) finished in 19:48.64.  Jonathon Roth (45th) finished with a time of 20:35.59.  Blake Stark (53rd) had a time of 21:35.15.

West Central will be at the Alcester-Hudson Invitational on Monday, September 21st.

Quarrier Cross Country Back in Action in Sioux Falls

After a week’s long break from competition, the Dell Rapids Quarrier cross country team participated in the Sioux Falls Christian Charger Invite on Tuesday, September 15th.

Neither the girls nor the boys team had enough runners participate in the varsity race to register a team score.

Vivca Kreul (44th) had a time of 24:48.24.  Adisen Stadem (52nd) finished in a time of 25:42.55.  Payton Van Zee (57th) had a time of 26:09.04.

Joshua Fletcher (19th) had a time of 18:46.47.  Logan Anderson (28th) had a time of 19:13.15, and Canyon Lowman (56th) finished in a time of 22:07.11.

Dell Rapids will host the Dell Rapids Invitational on Wednesday, September 23rd.

Jack Peterson

Jack L. Peterson, 74, of St. Petersburg, FL, formerly of Dell Rapids, SD, passed away on July 20, 2020 at his home in Florida of natural causes. His Memorial Service will begin at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 26, 2020 at Kahler-Brende Funeral Home. Visitation will be one hour prior to the start of the service. www.kahlerfh.com

Jack was born on September 14, 1945 in Dell Rapids, SD to Hollie and Margaret (Briley) Peterson. After graduation from Dell Rapids High School in 1963 he joined the United States Army. He was a communications specialist during Vietnam and was honorably discharged in 1969. He returned to South Dakota and began work as a travel agent where he found his love of travel. He eventually moved to Rochester, New York finding his entrepreneurial spirit. Due to the energy crisis of the 1970’s he sold his business and purchased a yacht. He sailed down the eastern seaboard and around the southern end of Florida ending in St. Petersburg, FL. He settled in St. Petersburg where he lived until his death. He was always in love with the Gulf Coast. He worked on the electrical systems of Endeavor Yachts for many years. Later he became a medical transcriptionist for many local doctors in the St. Petersburg area. He was well known for creating his own transcription system.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents and brother, David Peterson.

Grateful for having shared his life are his brother Robert “Bob” (Lee) Peterson and sister, Beth (Marvin) Nelsen; several nieces and nephews and several great nieces and nephews; special friend, Julia Fitzpatrick. He was grateful for the many friends and neighbors he had in St. Petersburg who were like family to him.

Dell Rapids Softball Notches Two More Wins

The Dell Rapids High School softball team earned two wins at home on Sunday, September 13th.  Dell Rapids defeated Baltic 6-4 in their first game and then defeated Edgerton 5-2 later in the afternoon.

Dell Rapids took an early lead after scoring a run in the bottom of the second inning.  They added another run in the bottom of the fourth inning for a 2-0 lead.  Baltic scored four times in the top of the sixth inning to lead 4-2, but Dell Rapids took the victory after scoring four times themselves in the bottom of the sixth.

Lexi Ingalls and Kenzi Garry both had two hits and two RBIs in the game.  Kylie Lebahn had two hits and an RBI, and Kyra Wajer also had two hits.  Autumn Tomes and Maddy Wilber also had a hit.  Tomes pitched 5 2/3 innings giving up three runs, all earned, on six hits with two walks and two strikeouts.  Wajer got the final out, but gave up an earned run on two hits.

Dell Rapids put Edgerton away late in their second game.  Dell Rapids scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning for a 2-0 lead.  Edgerton got a run back in the top of the second inning to cut the lead in half at 2-1.  The score remained 2-1 until the bottom of the sixth inning.  Dell Rapids scored three times to push the lead to 5-1.  Edgerton scored just one run in the top of the seventh.

Seven different players had a hit for Dell Rapids.  Cora Alderson, Haileigh Barnhart, Garry, Kylie Bittner, Kylie Lebahn, Wajer, and Rileigh Foster all had hits.  Alderson, Garry, Bittner, and Wajer each had an RBI.  Bittner pitched 6 1/3 innings giving up two runs, both unearned, on seven hits with one walk and three strikeouts.  Wajer pitched the final 2/3 of an inning striking out one batter.

Dell Rapids (3-1) will host Tri-Valley and West Central on Sunday, September 20th.

West Central Girls 3rd, Boys 4th at Lynx Cross Country Invitational

The West Central Trojan girls and boys cross country teams ran at the Lynx Cross Country Invitational on Saturday, September 12th.

The girls team finished third with a total of 54 points.  Brandon Valley was first with 11 points, and Yankton was second with 31 points.

Reagan Stallman finished 14th with a time of 22:29.79.  Drew Caffrey was 20th with a time of 23:36.40.  Elizabeth Johnson was 22nd with a time of 24:29.60.  Abbie Cain placed 23rd with a time of 24:30.67.  Kaylyn Kunz was 24th at 24:47.46, Paige Pilker was 25th in a time of 24:48.55, and Sayda Rolfson played 26th in a time of 25:17.87.

The boys team had a fourth place finish with 74 points.  Sioux Falls Roosevelt was first with 19 points.  Brandon Valley was second with 28 points, and Yankton placed third with 38 points.

Justin Schumacher had a 16th place finish with a time of 19:16.86.  Jonathon Roth was 19th in a time of 19:22.35.  Ben Strunk placed 24th with a time of 19:54.26.  Blake Stark had a 27th place finish in a time of 21:17.78.

The West Central cross country teams will be at the Sioux Falls Christian Charger Invite on Tuesday, September 15th.

West Central Falls to #1 Tea Area

The West Central Trojans hosted the #1 team in Class 11A, the Tea Area Titans, on Friday, September 11th.  Unfortunately for the Trojans, the game did not go their way as the Titans went home with a 41-0 victory.

Tea Area used a big first half, scoring four touchdowns, to secure the victory.  The Titans finished with a total of 424 yards of total offense, 319 rushing yards and 105 passing yards.  The Trojans were held to just 56 yards of offense.

Justin Zirpel finished with eight carries for 21 yards.  Ryan Healy had five carries for 19 yards.

West Central (1-2) looks to rebound when they travel to Tri-Valley High School to play the Mustangs on Friday, September 18th.

Dell Rapids Library Receives New Item and Expands Hours

The Dell Rapids Carnegie Public Library recently made two announcements on their Facebook page. 

The first announcement made was about a new book sanitizing machine.  According to Facebook announcement, the library was able to purchase a Liva Book Sterilizer machine through a Covid grant the city received.  This machine uses UV light to kill 99% of germs, bacteria, viruses, mold, and bed bugs.  All library materials can be used in the machine.  With the addition of this machine to the library, the quarantine time for returned library items  will be shortened from seven days to one day.

The other announcement made by the library was new updated hours.  Starting on Monday, September 14th, the library will be open on Mondays from 8:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and then open 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays.  Saturday hours will be coming soon.  The extended hours add an extra 30 minutes of open time on Mondays and an hour and a half on the other days of the week.
