This Year’s Track Season will See Changes

April 6, 2021 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

The 2021 South Dakota High School track season will have some changes in the way athletes qualify for the state meet.

Prior to this season, athletes qualified for the state meet by meeting a standard time/distance/height or by finishing in the top two of their event in the region meet.  Starting with this season, the state qualifiers will be the “Top 24” in each of the event after the regional meets have finished.  There will be no more automatic qualifiers from the region meets.

Results of the meets throughout the season will be entered at Athletic.net or the SDHSAA website.  Coaches will need to have performances entered into either of the sites before the start of the state meet to help determine the “Top 24”.

Athletes and fans can follow the top performances throughout the year by creating a free account at the Athletic.net and following this page:  https://www.athletic.net/TrackAndField/SouthDakota/

The state meet will also be slightly different due to the Covid-19 pandemic.  Each of the three classes will compete both days of the state meet at their own locations.  Class AA will be in Sturgis at Woodle Field.  Class A will compete at Lyle Hara Stadium at Black Hills State University in Spearfish.  Class B will be held at O’Hara Memorial Stadium on the campus of SDSM&T in Rapid City.

The South Dakota High School Activities Association is requesting  that all fans attending the state meet wear masks and remain socially distant during the event as much as possible.

Dell Rapids Elementary Handles Gas Leak Issue

March 30, 2021 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

The Dell Rapids Elementary school had its share of surprise excitement on Monday, March 29th.  Early in the school day, the Dell Rapids School District announced that there was a gas leak in the kitchen of the elementary building.

In a school-wide note that was emailed to parents, Dell Rapids Elementary Principal Julie Wynja stated that the entire school was evacuated in less than five minutes and all the students were boarded on buses within seventeen minutes of the initial announcement.

All of the students were moved to the high school building and were able to enjoy a movie in the gym while tests were done to the elementary building.  By 10:45 in the morning, the tests and reports indicated a safe return to the elementary building, and the students were transported back to the elementary building to finish the normal schedule to the day.

In the email note, Wynja said, “I must say that all staff and students at the elementary handled it like champs.”  She also said, “Please know that our number one priority was always making sure that your kids were safe!”

West Central Track Looking to Build on Successful First Meet

March 30, 2021 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

It had been 668 days between the last meet of the 2019 season and the first meet of the 2021 season for the West Central Trojan track team.  The Trojans were able to get back to competition on March 23rd.  If how they performed at the Lancer High School Opener is any indication, the Trojans will have a very strong team this year.

Girls Head Coach Janel Merkwan said, “Our girls team is very deep this year, and we have a lot of talent, both young and old. I am very excited to see what we put together as team this year. I expect our girls to battle with the best. West Central has so many strong female athletes, which is evident when you see how they have competed all year in their other sports, and I am happy to have them back on the track and see them working towards their goals. These young ladies are competitors and I would put our girls up against any team in the state is most any sport!”

The Trojans are led by a group of senior girls that have been with the program for four-to-six years. Those ladies include: Abbie Cain and Sayda Rolfson who are looking at finishing off their successful six year distance careers at West Central, Aysia Hall and Josie Koch who are looking at being in the top 10 in the state in their respective throwing events, Shaw Nelson who is coming off an ACL injury from this fall and is ready to get back out in competition and finish her senior year with a bang, Paige Pilker who is hopping for chance at contending in the high jump, Averi Schmeichel who is already a multi-event state track champion looking to defend some titles before she heads off to run D1 track at USD, Shelby Sherard who is looking at trying some shorter distances this season for some more experience, and Jada VanOverbeke who is a all state soccer player that has been a strong leg on the state placing sprint relays for the last five years.

The boys team will be led by seven seniors this year.  Those seniors are Barden Traub-Jensen, Justin Schumacher, Caleb Schulte, Jacob Nelson, Josh Livermore, Derek Eidsness, and Isaiah Colon.  The Trojans will also look to underclassmen Wyatt Nielsen (Sophomore), Layton Johnson (Freshman), Dylan Stromer (Sophomore), Ben Strunk (Freshman), Tommy Berg (Junior), Jude Jarding (Freshman), Erik Setten (Sophomore), and Dylan Sherard (Sophomore) who all had top eight finishes at the opening track meet on March 23rd.

The Trojans will be hosting the West Central Early Bird meet on Tuesday, April 6th.

West Central Girls Golf Returns One from 2019 Championship Team

March 30, 2021 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

The 2021 West Central Trojan girls golf team will have one returning member from the 2019 state championship team.

Jordyn Driscoll is the only returning varsity member from the 2019 team.

With the 2020 season cancelled last year, head coach Tony Lanham said that the rest of the varsity spots will be up for grabs this year.  Lanham mentioned that the JV team from 2019 did well in the few JV meets they had, but a lot has changed since then.  Coach Lanham said that he honestly isn’t sure what to expect this season.

The Trojans are scheduled to have a dual against Sioux Falls O’Gorman on Thursday, April 15th.

Head coach Derik Fossum said, “We have a fun, competitive group that is really excited to get to compete in track and field after missing a season. They have really been working hard this spring. Tri-Valley Girls Golf Looking to Have Season in 2021

March 30, 2021 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

The Tri-Valley Mustang girls golf team is looking forward to the 2021 season.  This will be the first official season for head coach Brandon DeWitt.  DeWitt would have had his first season as the head girls golf coach last year, but the season was cancelled by the South Dakota High School Activities Association due to the Covid pandemic.

The Mustangs did not have a season in 2019 either, so this will be the first year that Coach DeWitt will see any of the players.  DeWitt mentioned that he’s not sure what the season will bring given the school did not have a team in 2019 and last year’s season was cancelled, but he’s looking forward to seeing how the season progresses.

DeWitt also coached the Mustang boys golf team this fall and helped lead them to a team-qualifying state appearance in Hot Springs in October.
