Mudcats Defeat Wood Ducks in League Play

The Hartford-Humboldt Wood Ducks fell to the Dell Rapids Mudcats in Cornbelt League action on Sunday, June 13th by a score of 15-8.

Dell Rapids got two runs in the top of the first inning.  The Wood Ducks got a run back in the bottom of the second when Phil Madsen scored on a wild pitch.  Dell Rapids scored another run in the fourth and two more in the fifth for a 5-1 lead.

The sixth inning became interesting for both teams.  Dell Rapids scored seven times in the top of the inning to go ahead 12-1, but the Wood Ducks avoided the 10-run rule by scoring six times themselves to cut the lead to 12-7.

The Mudcats, however, scored another two runs in the seventh, and one more in the top of the night while the Wood Ducks were only able to get one more run in the bottom of the ninth.

Madsen and Austin King both had a double and a single in the game.  Nathan Adrian and Tyler Lundborg each had a single.  Blake Svoboda took the loss.

Gamecocks Fall to Lennox in Cornbelt League Game

The Hartford-Hubmoldt Gamecocks dropped a Cornbelt League game to Lennox on Sunday, June 13th.  Lennox scored five runs in the first four innings and took the win 8-1.

The Gamecocks’ lone run was driven in by Quiqley on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth.

Quiqley finished with two hits, including a double, and an RBI.  Clayton Hanisch had a double.  Jon Maras had two hits.  Drew DeMers and Joe Hanisch both had a hit.

Tyler Renken pitched six innings allowing five earned runs on five hits with eight walks and three strikeouts.  DeMers pitched two innings giving up three earned runs on four hits with two walks and a strikeout.  J. Hanisch pitched one inning allowing three hits with two strikeouts.

The Gamecocks currently have a 5-7 record.

Hartford Sparx 18U Wins Silver Bracket Tournament in Mitchell

The Hartford Sparx 18U softball team won the silver bracket of the Lowell Rang Memorial Tournament in Mitchell.  The tournament was held Friday, June 11th through Sunday, June 13th.

The Sparx won their first pool play game on Friday against Parkston by a score of 4-0.  Hartford scored a run in the fourth and three in the fifth while holding Parkston to just three hits in the game.

Avery Evans had three hits.  Grace Harden, Brooke Opitz, and Kaylee Olson all had hits and an RBI.  McKenna Sichmeller had a double.  Taylor Kunzweiler also had a hit.  Harden pitched all seven innings allowing just three hits with eight strikeouts.

Hartford played their final two pool play games on Saturday, dropping both of them.  In the first game, Metro Select Nationals scored two runs in the first and two in the second for a 4-0 lead.  The Sparx rallied for three in the bottom of the seventh on a three-run double by Caitlyn Maa, but she was left on second base as the tying run as the game ended.

Harden had two hits.  Maa had a double and three RBIs.  Jenna Lueth, Opitz, Addy Kramer, Olivia Brown, and Olson all had hits.  Kunzweiler pitched six innings allowing four runs, three earned, on nine hits with one walk and six strikeouts.

The Sparx then lost their final pool play game after giving up three runs to Fusion Heat to fall by a score of 6-5.  Harden and Kramer both had two hits and an RBI.  Brown and Kunzweiler both had a single and an RBI.  Evans and Sichmeller both had a double in the game.  Riley Morrison also had a hit.  Harden pitched six innings allowing six earned runs on 11 hits with two walks and three strikeouts.

After going 1-2 in pool play, Hartford was set as the #2 seed in the silver division, single-elimination tournament on Sunday.

In the first game, the Sparx blanked Diamonds Elite 8-0 by only allowing two hits.  Sichmeller finished with a triple and two RBIs.  Harden had two hits, including a double, and an RBI.  Lueth had a hit and two RBIs.  Maa, Evans, and Brown all had a hit.  Olson pitched five innings allowing just two hits and had five strikeouts.

Hartford had another shutout in their second game beating the Rebels 4-0.  The Sparx scored all four runs in the bottom of the third.  Maa had two more hits, including a double, with two RBIs.  Kramer had a hit and an RBI.  Harden, Sichmeller, and Lueth all had singles.  Kunzweiler pitched three innings allowing three hits with three walks and two strikeouts.  Harden also pitched three innings allowing a hit while striking out three batters.

The Sparx then took the championship game 6-1 over Mitchell Adrenaline.  Hartford scored five times in the top of the third, while Mitchell’s lone run came in the bottom of the inning.  Hartford added one more in the top of the sixth.

Brown had two hits, one home run and one double, with three RBIs.  Knuzweiler and Sichmeller both had a hit and an RBI.  Riley Morrison had two hits.  Opitz, Harden, Kramer, and Evans all had singles.   Harden pitched six innings allowing one earned run on six hits with five strikeouts.

Second Place in I-29 League Tournament Goes to West Central 16U

The West Central 16U teener team placed second in the 2021 I-29 League Tournament finishing 3-1 in their four games from Friday, June 11th to Sunday, June 13th.

West Central cruised to an easy 18-1 win over the Tea Bolts in their Friday game.  West Central scored in every inning of the game and held Tea to no hits in the game.

Owen Heath had a home run and three RBIs.  Duece Sherard had a triple.  Justin Zirpel had two hits, one triple, and an RBI.  Dalton Mulder had two hits, including a double, with three RBIs.  Dylan Stromer had a double and two RBIs.  Gage Nelson had a hit and an RBI. Cade Vander Woude and Mason Berens both had an RBI.  Heath pitched four innings allowing one unearned run on no hits with two walks and three strikeouts.

West Central gave up two runs to Baltic in the top of the first inning, but scored four of their own in the bottom of the inning on their way to a 5-3 win over Baltic in their first game on Saturday.  Both teams scored a run in the fifth inning.

Stromer and Camden McDonald both had a hit and an RBI.  Sherard, Gage Nelson, Zirpel, Mulder, and Vander Woude all had singles.  Derek Renken pitched 2/3 of an inning allowing two earned runs on a hit with four walks.  Andrew Zimmer pitched 3 2/3 innings allowing one unearned run on a hit with five strikeouts.  Vander Woude pitched 1 2/3 innings allowing just two hits with a strikeout.

West Central had a come-from-behind win over Parker in the second game on Saturday.  West Central scored two runs in the top of the first, but Parker got a run in the bottom of the inning.  West Central got one more run in the top of the second, however, Parker scored six times in the bottom of the second for a 7-3 lead.  West Central responded with four runs in the fourth, one in the fifth, and two more in the sixth to take a 10-7 lead.  Parker only got one run in the sixth, and West Central got the 10-8 win.

Zirpel had three hits, one of them a home run and one a double, with two RBIs.  Sherard had three hits, one double, with an RBI.  Nelson had two doubles and three RBIs.  Mulder had two hits and one RBI.  McDonald and Renken each had a double and RBI.  Vander Woude and Zimmer also each had a double.  Stromer also collected a hit.  Mulder pitched 3 2/3 innings allowing seven runs, none of them earned, on four hits with three walks and seven strikeouts.  Zimmer pitched 2 1/3 innings allowing an unearned run on a hit with three strikeouts.

In the championship game on Sunday, West Central had a late rally against Dell Rapids, but fell 12-9.  Dell Rapids led 4-2 after two innings of play and then scored seven straight to lead 11-2 heading into the bottom of the fifth.  West Central scored two in the bottom of the innings to cut the lead to 11-4.  Each team scored a run in the fifth inning for a 12-5 score.  West Central scored four times before having an out recorded, but Dell Rapids was able to stop the rally for the win.

Zirpel had a triple and an RBI.  Nelson also had a triple.  McDonald had three hits and two RBIs.  Vander Woude had two hits and an RBI.  Stromer finished with two hits.  Nelson and Zimmer both had a single.  Zirpel pitched three innings allowing four runs, two earned, on two hits with six walks and a strikeout.  Renken pitched 2 1/3 innings allowing seven runs, only two earned, on six hits with two walks and two strikeouts.  Vander Woude pitched 1 2/3 innings allowed an earned run on four hits with two strikeouts.

Dell Rapids 16U Takes First in I-29 League Tournament

The Dell Rapids 16U teener team took home first place in the I-29 League Tournament.  They played four games from Friday, June 11th to Sunday, June 13th, winning all of them. 

Dell Rapids’ only game on Friday was a 9-0 win over Hamlin.  Dell Rapids got three runs in the bottom of the first inning and cruised from there as the defense held Hamlin to just one hit in the game.

Joe Rechtenbaugh had three hits, including two doubles, and three RBIs. Dylan Mathis had two hits, one a triple, and three RBIs.  Brayden Pankonen and Braden Fersdahl both had a hit and RBI.  Will Jaton and Kade Kremer also had hits in the game.  Rechtenbaugh pitched 2 2/3 innings allowing just one hit with one walk and six strikeouts.  Jaton pitched 1 1/3 innings striking out three batters.  CJ Smith pitched an inning with two strikeouts, and Pankonen pitched an inning with two strikeouts.

In their first game on Saturday, Dell Rapids and Madison White were locked in a tight battle with the score remaining 0-0 through three innings.  Dell Rapids broke through in the fourth inning with a run, added three more in the top of the fifth, and a sixth run in the top of the sixth for a 6-0 lead.  Madison scored a couple of runs in the bottom of the sixth inning on a couple of passed balls, but Dell Rapids stopped the rally and won the game 6-2.

Pankonen had two hits, one a triple, and two RBIs.  Jaton had two hits, with a double.  Fersdahl, Sutton Williams, and John Mortrude all had singles in the game.  Jaton pitched five innings of no-hit baseball with four walks and seven strikeouts.  Fersdahl gave up two earned runs on no hits with three walks and a strikeout in one inning of work.

Dell Rapids rode a three-run first inning to a 4-1 win over Elkton in their second game on Saturday.  Dell Rapids added their fourth run in the top of the fourth inning, while Elkton’s lone run came in the bottom of the fifth. 

Smith had a three-hit game along with an RBI.  Jaton had a triple and an RBI.  Mortrude had a hit and RBI.  Micah Pickard had a double, and Pankonen had a hit as well.  Pankonen also pitched a six-inning complete game allowing one run, unearned, on two hits with one walk and 12 strikeouts.

The win over Elkton put Dell Rapids in the championship game on Sunday in Garretson against West Central  Dell Rapids had three big innings and held off a West Central rally to take the tournament title by a score of 12-9.

West Central scored first in the bottom of the first, but Dell Rapids responded with four in the top of the second.  West Central cut the lead in half with a run in the bottom of the second at 4-2.  Dell Rapids then added four runs in the top of the fourth and three more in the top of the fifth for an 11-2 lead.  West Central got two runs in the bottom of the fifth to make the score 11-4.  Both teams got a run in the sixth inning, and Dell Rapids led 12-5 heading into the seventh.  Dell Rapids was held scoreless in the inning while West Central was able to score four runs before an out was recorded, but Dell Rapids was able to regroup and shut down the rally for the win.

Jaton had a hit with two RBIs.  Pankonen, Mathis, Mortrude, and Evan Nelson all had a hit and RBI.  Fersdahl collected two hits.  Pickard, Smith, and Aiden Geraets all had a hit.  Rechtenbaugh pitched 4 1/3 innings allowing four runs, two earned, on six hits with two walks and three strikeouts.  Smith pitched 2 2/3 innings allowing five runs, four earned, on four hits with two strikeouts.

Tri-Valley 16U Wins One of Three at I-29 League Tourney

The Tri-Valley 16U teener team played three games between Friday, June 11th and Saturday, June 12th in the I-29 League Tournament in Garretson.  Tri-Valley finished those three games with a record of 1-2.

Tri-Valley gave up four early runs to Garretson, and their rally fell short in the sixth inning as Garretson got a 5-4 win on Friday.

Garretson picked up a run in the bottom of the first.  Beau Keith drove home two runs with a single in the top of the third to give Tri-Valley a 2-1 lead.  Garretson scored three times in the bottom of the third to regain the lead, and then added another one in the bottom of the fifth to extend the lead to 5-2.  Everett Althoff had an RBI double, and Noah Haynes scored on an error to cut the lead to 5-4.  Tri-Valley had the tying run thrown out at home for the second out of the inning.  A strikeout ended the game with the tying run on third.

Keith had two hits with two RBIs.  Haynes, Kaden Egger, and Barrett Althoff all had two hits.  E. Althoff had a double and an RBI.  Cole Focken and Mason Hendrixson both had a single.  Tanner Van Asselt had an RBI.  Egger pitched four innings allowing four earned runs on seven hits with one walk and seven strikeouts.  Keith pitched one inning allowing an unearned run with one walk and two strikeouts.

Tri-Valley scored eight runs in the middle innings to earn a 9-4 win over the Tea Bolts in their first game on Saturday.

Keith scored on a passed ball in the bottom of the first for a 1-0 lead.  Tea got single runs in the top of the second and third for a 2-1 lead, but Tri-Valley got five runs in the bottom of the third.  Haynes had a two-run single, and Brendan Newman had a three-run triple for a 6-2 lead.  They would score three more runs in the bottom of the fourth.  Two runs scored on an error, and Keith scored on a passed ball as Tri-Valley closed out the game for the win.

Newman had a triple with three RBIs.  Hendrixson had two hits and two RBIs.  Haynes had a hit with two RBIs.  Holden Rise had two hits.  Lawson Loiseau and Aidan Heitkamp both had hits as well.  Haynes pitched all six innings allowing four runs, three earned, on eight hits with one walk and one strikeout.

Tri-Valley fell to the Tea Gold 16U team in their final game of the day.  Tea scored five runs in the first two wins and finished with a 7-2 over Tri-Valley.

B. Althoff scored on a passed ball in the top of the fourth for Tri-Valley’s first run of the game.  Keith scored on an error in the top of the sixth as Tri-Valley was held to just three hits in the game.

B. Althoff, Rise, and Van Asselt had the three hits.  Hendrixson pitched 3 2/3 innings allowing seven runs, three earned, on eight hits with three walks and six strikeouts.  Keith pitched 1 1/3 innings allowing just one hit and one walk with two strikeouts.

Dell Rapids Legion Starts Season 1-2

The Dell Rapids Legion baseball team had three road games, all on three nights in a row, to start the 2021 season.  Dell Rapids traveled to Vermillion on Tuesday, June 8th, falling by a score of 13-3.  They then went to Madison on Wednesday, June 9th, again falling by a score of 13-3.  The final road game of the week was at Dakota Valley, and Dell Rapids came home with a 13-7 extra inning victory.

Dell Rapids got on the board first in Vermillion.  Riley Peter scored on a wild pitch in the top of the second inning.  Dell Rapids took advantage of five straight walks to start the third inning.  Andrew Van Dam and Caleb Kittleson had RBI bases-loaded walks for a 3-0 lead.  That was all the runs Dell Rapids would get as they were actually held hitless in the game.  Vermillion scored six in the bottom of the third, six more in the bottom of the fourth, and a final run in the bottom of the fifth.

Brady Larson pitched 2 2/3 innings allowing six runs, two earned, on four  hits  with three walks.   Van Dam pitched two innings allowing seven runs, six earned, on four hits with four walks and one strikeout.

Dell Rapids had another tough game in Madison.  They committed six errors and only had one hit in the game.  Again they scored the first three runs, all three coming in the top of the third inning.  Zeb Schumaker scored on an error, Connor Libis scored on a wild pitch, and Noah Swartwout had an RBI  double for the 3-0 lead.  Madison responded with five runs in the bottom of the third, five more in the bottom of the fourth, and the final three in the bottom of the fifth to win on the 10-run rule.

Landon Ruesink pitched 3 1/3 innings allowing eight runs, four earned, on five hits with three walks and two strikeouts.  Jake Steineke pitched 1 1/3 innings allowing five runs, one earned, on two hits with three walks and one strikeout.

The offense and defense put together a solid game in the third one in as many days at Dakota Valley.   Dakota Valley scored three times in the bottom of the first.  Dell Rapids two two runs in the top of the third.  Libis scored on a wild pitch, and Ruesink scored on an error to cut the lead to 3-2.  Dakota Valley scored four times in the bottom of the third to build a 7-2 lead, but Dell Rapids chipped away throughout the game.

Schumaker had a two-run double in the top of the fourth and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Josh Deknikker.  Dell Rapids tied the game in the top of the fifth when Kittleson hit a two-run double to center field.  The score remained 7-7 through the seventh as well as two extra innings.  In the top of the 10th, Dell Rapids scored six times.  Larson had a two-run single, Bryce Sommerfeld had an RBI single, Deknikker had an RBI double, and Libis had a two-run single to give Dell Rapids the 13-7 lead and win.

Schumaker had three hits, including a double, and two RBIs.  Larson, Kittleson, and Deknikker all had two hits, all with one double, and two RBIs each.  Libis had a hit with two RBIs, Sommerfeld had a hit with an RBI, Ruesink finished with two doubles, and Swartwout also had a hit.

Swartwout pitched three innings allowing seven runs, three earned, on seven hits with three walks and two strikeouts.  Kittleson pitched 5 1/3 innings with no runs on five hits with one walk and two strikeouts.  Larson pitched the final 2/3 of an inning to earn the win while picking up a strikeout.

West Central Royal 14U Holds off Tri-Valley Maroon 14U

The West Central Royal 14U teener team held off a late rally by Tri-Valley Maroon 14U to get a 10-8 win on Thursday, June 10th.

Tri-Valley scored the first three runs of the game.  Carter Sorenson stole home and Cody Lofswold scored on a ground ball in the top of the second.  Tri-Valley added one more run in the top of the third when Brody Dybvig scored on an RBI ground ball by Aiden Bunde.

West Central tied the game in the bottom of the third.  Landen Holewa had an RBI single, Lando Whiting had a steal of home, and Holewa later scored on an error to make the score 3-3.  West Central took the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning.  Quincy Stephens had an RBI single, and Cody Opitz had an RBI ground out to give West Central the 5-3 lead.  Four more runs scored in the bottom of the fifth inning when Whiting and Holewa scored on an error, CJ DenBoer scored on a passed ball, and Preston Hostetler scored on an error.  West Central added their 10th run in the bottom of the sixth inning when Anthony Lanham scored on a passed ball.

Tri-Valley made a furious push in the top of the seventh inning.  Austin Puetz scored on a ground out by Cyrus Kirstein, which was the second out of the inning.  Landon Jensen scored on a passed ball.  Bunde and Sorenson both drew bases loaded walks to make the score 10-7.  Kaiden Bernards had an RBI single, but West Central was able to get the final out and hang on for the win.

Dybvig had a triple in the game for Tri-Valley.  Tristen Bunde and Sorenson both had a double, and Bernards had a hit.  A. Bunde had two RBIs.  Sorenson, Bernards, Hunter Foster, and Kirstein all had one RBI.  Sorenson pitched three innings allowing three runs, two earned, on two hits with two walks and four strikeouts.  Dybvig pitched two innings allowing six runs, two earned, on three hits with a walk and two strikeouts.  Landon Asche pitched an inning allowing one run, unearned, on a hit with two strikeouts.

Holewa had two hits for West Central with an RBI.  Stephens had a hit and an RBI.  Whiting, Cooper Mulder, and Lanham all had singles.   Opitz also had an RBI.   Stephens pitched six innings allowing three runs, one earned, on three hits with one walk and six strikeouts.  Whiting pitched 2/3 of an inning allowing five earned runs on six walks.  Opitz pitched 1/3 of an inning allowing a hit.

Gamecocks Fall to Canova on the Road

The Hartford-Humboldt Gamecocks held early leads in the first two innings, but the Canova Gang took the lead for good in the bottom of the second inning and pulled away for a 7-4 win on Thursday, June 10th.

Cole Hellie gave the Gamecocks their first lead of the game on a two-run single in the top of the first inning.  Canova tied the game in the bottom of the first inning on three straight hits.  Tyler Renken gave the Gamecocks the lead back, 3-2, with a solo home run to lead off the top of the second inning.  Canova again strung together three straight hits in the bottom of the second, this time scoring three runs to take a 5-3 lead.  Hellie had another RBI single in the top of the third to pull the Gamecocks within a run at 5-4, but Canova scored a run in the bottom of the sixth and one more in the bottom of the eighth to secure the win.

Renken had two hits, a home run and double, and one RBI.  Hellie had two hits and three RBIs.  Cam Quigley had two hits.  Broc Haldeman, Joe Hanisch, Chad Morrison, and Adam Hentges all had singles in the game. 

Micah Warrington pitched 5 1/3 innings allowing six earned runs on eight hits with four walks and two strikeouts.  Quigley pitched 2 2/3 innings allowing one earned run on two hits with three walks and two strikeouts.

West Central Gold 14U Wins Big over Volga

The West Central Gold 14U team scored a big road win on Thursday, June 10th.  West Central defeated Volga 26-4 in five innings.

The visitors scored first with two runs in the top of the first inning.  Volga responded with a run in the bottom of the inning, and West Central led 2-1 after the first inning.  West Central would add four more runs in the top of the second to extend the lead to 6-1.  Volga pulled within two runs, 6-4, after three runs in the bottom of the third inning.  Then West Central scored 20 straight runs.  They scored six times in the fourth inning and then plated 14 runs in the top of the fifth.

West Central had a total of 16 hits with eight different players getting a hit in the game.  Jesse Jost had four hits and three RBIs.  Keaton Vessells had three hits, one of them a double, with four RBIs.  Cain Grocott also had three hits, one of them a triple, and four RBIs.  Nick Lorang had two hits, one a double, with two RBIs.  Caden Alfson finished with a double and three RBIs.  Jack Sebert and Seth Lind both had a hit and two RBIs.   Jacob Kono also had a hit.

Vessells pitched two innings allowing one earned run on two hits with three walks and three strikeouts.  Sebert pitched an inning allowing three earned runs on three hits with two walks and two strikeouts.  Lorang pitched two innings of no-hit baseball with two strikeouts.
