The West Central high school baseball season came to an end on Wednesday, May 21st in Dell Rapids in the Region 3B super regional. West Central got an opening round win over Lennox, but fell to Dell Rapids in the state tournament qualifying game.
West Central 13, Lennox 9
A four-run top of the seventh inning helped West Central to a 13-9 win over Lennox. West Central scored two times in the top of the first inning. Lennox responded with one run for a 2-1 score. West Central then put seven runs on the board in the top of the second for a 9-1 lead. The score remained 9-1 until the bottom of the fifth. Lennox rallied for a big eight-run inning to tie the game 9-9. Neither team scored in the sixth inning. West Central then tallied four runs in the top of the seventh to grab the momentum and the win.
Hayes Cain had five hits, two of them doubles, and two RBIs. Keaton Vessells and Beckett Everson both had a single with two RBIs each. Gunnar Alfson had a single and an RBI. Zach Lorang, CJ DenBoer, and Hayden Whiting all had one RBI each. Caden Alfson pitched four innings and allowed four earned runs on three hits and five walks with seven strikeouts. DenBoer pitched two innings and allowed five earned runs on five hits and two walks with two strikeouts. Everson threw one inning and had one walk and one strikeout.
Dell Rapids 5, West Central 0
West Central was held to just one hit as Dell Rapids claimed the trip to the state tournament with a 5-0 win. Dell Rapids scored two runs in the second and then had single runs in the bottom of the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings.
G. Alfson had the lone hit for West Central. He also pitched three innings and allowed two earned runs on two hits and three walks with three strikeouts. Lando Whiting pitched 2 2/3 innings and allowed two earned runs on three hits and two walks with two strikeouts. Everson pitched 1/ of an inning and allowed an earned run on two walks.
