The Tri-Valley Maroon 17U team played five games in two days at a tournament in Brookings held Friday, July 11th and Saturday, July 12th. They finished the tournament with a 3-2 record.
Tri-Valley Maroon 12, Harrisburg Gold 3
In their first game of the tournament, Tri-Valley scored in every inning but one while cruising to a win over Harrisburg. They scored two times in the top of the first inning. Harrisburg got one run back in the bottom of the first. After a scoreless second inning, Tri-Valley scored a run in the third and then five more in the top of the fourth for an 8-1 lead. Each team put two runs on the board in the fifth inning. Tri-Valley would get their final two runs in the top of the sixth.
Bentley McMillen had four hits, one a triple. Abbott Moeller had three hits and four RBIs. Jackson Williams added a single with an RBI. Cooper Nielsen had a hit, and Parker Atwood had two RBIs. Atwood also pitched four innings and allowed an earned run on four hits and a walk with eight strikeouts.
Tri-Valley Maroon 7, Watertown Arrows 4
Four early runs helped Tri-Valley to a win over Watertown also on Friday. They scored four times in the bottom of the first. Watertown scratched across a run in the top of the second inning. Tri-Valley got that run back in the bottom of the third for a 5-1 lead. Watertown got another run in the top of the fifth. Again Tri-Valley responded, this time with two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Watertown plated two runs in the top of the seventh, but the rally was stopped there.
Williams finished with two hits and three RBIs. Cole Hendrixson had two hits and two RBIs. Nielsen also had two hits. Moeller and McMillen both had one hit each.
Tri-Valley Maroon 9, Aberdeen Smittys 1
In their first game on Saturday, Tri-Valley took care of business against Aberdeen. Tri-Valley scored a run in the top of the first, four in the second, and two more in the third for a 7-0 lead. Aberdeen got their lone run in the bottom of the third inning. Tri-Valley added two more in the top of the fifth.
McMillen finished with three hits, one a double. Hendrixson had a double and triple with an RBI. Atwood had two hits with an RBI. Moeller finished with a single and two RBIs. Evan Focken also had two RBIs. Focken pitched 3 1/3 innings and allowed an unearned run on four hits and a walk with three strikeouts.
New Ulm 18, Tri-Valley Maroon 4
Tri-Valley briefly led in the game, but New Ulm handed them their first loss of the tournament. New Ulm scored two times in the top of the first inning. Tri-Valley countered with four runs in the bottom of the first for a 4-2 lead. New Ulm then scored three in the second and two in the third for a 7-4 lead. They put the game out of reach with an 11-run top of the sixth inning.
Nielsen finished with a single and an RBI. McMillen and Atwood each had one hit. Williams pitched three innings and allowed one earned run on three hits.
Jamestown 14, Tri-Valley Maroon 3
Jamestown ended the tournament for Tri-Valley on Saturday. They scored a run in the top of the first and two in the second for an early 3-0 lead. Tri-Valley got a run in the bottom of the second. Each team would also get a run in the third, and Jamestown led 4-2 after three innings. Tri-Valley cut the lead to 4-3 with another run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Jamestown, however, would get five runs in the top of the fifth, one in the sixth, and then four more in the top of the seventh to pull away for the win.
Moeller, Nielsen, Hendrixson, and Atwood all finished with one hit each. Williams had an RBI in the game.
