Tri-Valley 16U Comes from Behind to Beat West Central 16U

Tri-Valley 16U came from three runs behind to beat West Central 16U 7-5 in Colton on Monday, July 19th.

West Central’s Andrew Zimmer had an RBI ground out to shortstop in the top of the first inning.  Gage Nelson had an RBI double followed by an RBI double by Duece Sherard to give West Central a 3-0 lead after two innings.

Tri-Valley picked up two runs in the bottom of the third inning.  Kaden Egger had an RBI single, and then Everett Althoff had an RBI single to cut the lead to 3-2.  West Central extended the lead back to three runs with two more in the top of the fourth inning.  Sherard had an RBI single, and D Mulder drove home a run on a single for a 5-2 advantage.

Tri-Valley then had a four-run bottom of the fourth.  Tanner Van Asselt had an RBI single.  Lawson Loiseau also had an RBI ground out.  Ledger Burggraff brought home the tying run on an RBI double, and Holden Rise scored on a passed ball to give Tri-Valley a 6-5 lead.  Tri-Valley added another run in the bottom of the sixth when Loiseau scored on a passed ball.

Sherard had three hits, including a double, and two RBIs for West Central.  Mulder and Nelson both had two hits each, one a double, and an RBI.  Camden McDonald had a double, and Owen Heath had a single.  Zimmer pitched four innings allowing six runs, four earned, on seven hits with one walk and five strikeouts.  Heath pitched two innings allowing an unearned run on four hits with a walk and four strikeouts.

Althoff and Loiseau both had two hits each and an RBI.  Noah Haynes also had two hits.  Burggraff had a double and an RBI.  Egger and Van Asselt both had a single and an RBI.  Beau Keith had a double, and Mason Hendrixson had a single.  Egger pitched 5 2/3 innings allowing five earned runs on nine hits with one walk and six strikeouts.  Keith pitched 1 1/3 innings walking two batters and striking out one.

Gamecocks Can’t Hold Comeback Lead, Fall to Madison in Regular Season Finale

The Hartford-Humboldt Gamecocks nearly pulled off a come-from-behind win after trailing 8-0 to Madison, but Madison scored two late runs to get an 11-10 win in the final regular season league game on Sunday, July 18th.

Madison scored a run in the top of the first inning and then got hot in the top of the fourth.  Madison scored seven times on five hits to take an 8-0 lead after four innings of play.  The Gamecocks started to chip away at the lead starting with two runs in the bottom of the fifth on an two-run single by Jon Maras.  Hartford-Humboldt scored four times in the bottom of the sixth.  Noah Vettrus received a bases-loaded walk, Drew DeMers brought home two with a double, and Devon Garry had an RBI sacrifice fly to cut the lead to 8-6.  The Gamecocks pulled within a run in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI single by Drew Maras. 

Madison added a run in the top of the eighth to extend their lead to 9-7.  The Gamecocks took the lead in the bottom of the eighth with three more runs.  Cole Hellie had a two-run single to tie the game.  J. Maras followed with an RBI ground out to put the Gamecocks in front 10-9.  Madison, however, scored two runs with two outs in the top of the ninth to retake the lead 11-10.  Hartford-Humboldt went down in order in the bottom of the ninth.

Tyler Renken had four hits.  Garry finished with three hits, one double, and an RBI.  DeMers had two hits, one double, and two RBIs.  Hellie had two hits and two RBIs.  J. Maras had a hit and three RBIs.  D. Maras had a hit and an RBI.  Dhad Morrison and Adam Hentges both had a hit, and Vettrus had an RBI.  Micah Warrington pitched 3 2/3 innings allowing five earned runs on eight hits with a walk and three strikeouts.  Vettrus pitched 1 1/3 innings allowing three earned runs on three hits with two walks.  Cole Barthel pitched two innings allowing a walk and had a strikeout.  Devon Garry pitched two innings allowing three earned runs on four hits with five walks and four strikeouts.

Gamecocks Win Pitcher’s Duel over Lennox

The Hartford-Humboldt Gamecocks and Lennox were locked in a pitcher’s duel in a close game on Thursday, July 15th in Lennox.

Lennox scored in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI ground out.  The score remained 1-0 until the top of the ninth.  After a single by Devon Garry and double by Joe Hanisch, Cole Hellie hit a ground ball and reached on an error by the shortstop.  Both Garry and Hanisch scored on the play to give the Gamecocks a 2-1 lead.  Lennox got two runners on base in the bottom of the ninth with two outs, but Hartford-Humboldt was able to keep Lennox off the board for a 2-1 win.

Drew DeMers and Hanisch both had a double in the game.  Garry had a single.  Tyler Renken pitched seven innings allowing one earned run on seven hits with three walks and three strikeouts.  Broc Haldeman pitched two innings allowing a hit with four strikeouts.

West Central 16U Wins Big over Hamlin

West Central scored 16 runs in just two innings in a 16-0 win over Hamlin on Thursday, July 15th.  The two teams were tied 0-0 after the first inning, but West Central then scored seven runs in the second inning and nine more in the bottom of the third to end the game on the 15-run rule.

Andrew Zimmere had two hits, one a double, and four RBIs.  Dylan Stromer had two hits and two RBIs.  Will Nester had a double with two RBIs.  Xzavian Ferris had a double and an RBI.  Cade Vander Woude and Jon Murray both had a single and an RBI.  Duece Sherard finished with a single.  Dalton Mulder, Owen Heath, and Gavin Gerlach all had an RBI. 

Heath pitched three innings giving up just two hits while striking out seven batters.

Wood Ducks Drop Make-up Game to PBR

The Hartford-Humboldt Wood Ducks traveled to Dell Rapids to play PBR on Tuesday, July 13th to play a make-up game from May 27th.  PBR grabbed the lead in the bottom of the fifth and scored another late run for a 5-3 victory.

The Wood Ducks got on the board in the top of the first inning when Drew Eldeen scored on an error on a ground ball hit by Tyler Lundburg.  The score stayed 1-0 until PBR scored two times in the bottom of the fourth inning. The Wood Ducks regained the lead in the top of the fifth.  Austin Smith had an RBI single, and Daniel Hoey followed with an RBI single for a 3-2 lead.  PBR, again, scored time times in the bottom of the fifth inning.  PBR would also add a run in the bottom of the eighth for the 5-3 win.

Bennett Sebert had two hits, one of them a double.  Smith and Hoey both had a hit and an RBI.  Eldeen had a double.  Jake Ellens also had a single.  Eldeen pitched seven innings allowing five runs, one earned, on four hits with five walks and eight strikeouts.  Smith pitched an inning striking out one.

West Central 16U Beats Madison with Late Inning Rally

West Central scored three times in the bottom of the sixth to defeat Madison White 5-2 on Tuesday, July 13th.

Madison got the first run in the top of the third inning, but West Central scored twice in the bottom of the inning.  Justin Zirpel had an RBI triple and Camden McDonald followed with an RBI single for a 2-1 lead.  Madison tied the game in the top of the fourth inning on an RBI ground out.

The score remained 2-2 until the bottom of the sixth inning.  Xzavian Ferris got an RBI single to give West Central a 3-2 lead.  Duece Sherard followed with a two-run double for the 5-2 advantage.

McDonald had three hits and an RBI.  Zirpel had two hits, one a triple, with an RBI.  Ferris had a hit and two RBIs.  Cade Vander Woude had two hits.  Sherard finished with a double and two RBIs.  Dalton Mulder, Gage Nelson, and Derek Renken all had a single.  Renken pitched six innings allowing two earned runs on four hits with two walks and seven strikeouts.  Andrew Zimmer pitched an inning allowing one hit with two strikeouts.

West Central 14U Qualifies for State after Second Place Region Finish

West Central 14U qualified for the 14U South Dakota State A tournament after a second place finish in the Region 3A tournament Friday, July 9th through Monday, July 12th.

It wasn’t an easy path for West Central to qualify for state as they lost their opening round game to Madison Gold 2-1 on Friday morning.  Both teams scored a run in the third inning, but Madison Gold got the game-winning run in the top of the sixth inning.  CJ DenBoer and Jesse Jost had the only two hits in the game for West Central.  Caden Alfson pitched 4 2/3 innings allowing an unearned run on two hits with four walks and six strikeouts.  Landen Holewa pitched 2 1/3 innings allowing an earned run on a hit and four walks with four strikeouts.

West Central rebounded against Wagner on Saturday.  West Central advanced with a 5-1 victory.  Wagner scored the first run in the top of the first, but West Central took the lead for good in the bottom of the first with two runs.  They added two more in the second and another in the fourth.  Alfson had two hits, including a double, and two RBIs.  Keaton Vessells had a double and an RBI.  Holewa and DenBoer both had singles.  Jack Sebert had an RBI.  Anthony Lanham pitched six innings allowing an unearned run on no hits and six walks with eight strikeouts.  Sebert pitched an inning allowing a hit and a walk.

In their second game on Saturday, West Central defeated Tri-Valley Maroon 15-6 to keep their run going.  Tri-Valley Maroon had a 3-1 lead after the first inning.  West Central scored three in the top of the second only to see Tri-Valley score three more in the bottom of the second to keep the lead at 6-4.  West Central pulled with in a run at 6-5 with another run in the top of the third.  West Central then had an eight-run fifth inning with two more in the sixth to get the win.  Alfson and two hits, one a double, and two RBIs.  Cooper Mulder had two hits and two RBIs.  Vessells had two hits, one a double, and an RBI.  Jost had a hit and an RBI.  Orlando Whiting had a double.  Holewa and DenBoer also had a hit.  Jost pitched two innings allowing six runs, three earned, on five hits with four walks and a strikeout.  Vessells pitched five innings allowing just one hit and five walks with 10 strikeouts.

The momentum continued for West Central on Sunday as they got another win in the tournament, this time over Lennox 10-0.  West Central scored in every inning but the third inning and held Lennox to only three hits in the game.  Holewa had two hits, including a double, with three RBIs.  Jost had two hits and an RBI.  Sebert had two hits.  Alfson had a double and two RBIs.  Vessells had a hit with two RBIs.  Cain Grocott had a double, and Mulder had a single.  Zach Lorang had an RBI.  Sebert pitched all five innings allowing three hits with a walk and two strikeouts.

The win put West Central into the state tournament and into the championship game in a rematch with Madison Gold.  West Central put together another great offensive game scoring in five of the six innings taking a 12-2 win.  Vessells had four hits, including two doubles, with three RBIs.  Grocott had a hit and two RBIs.  Alfson had a double and an RBI.  Mulder finished with a single and an RBI.  Jost had a hit, and Nick Lorang had an RBI.  Jacob Kono pitched six innings allowing two runs, one earned, on five hits with two walks and a strikeout.

The win over Madison forced a second championship game to determine who would be the #1 rep for Region 3A.  Both teams scored three runs in the first inning.  West Central took the lead in the bottom of the fifth, but Madison scored four times in the top of the sixth inning.  West Central got two runs back in the bottom of the sixth, but Madison got the 7-6 victory.  N. Lorang had two doubles and an RBI.  Grocott had a double and an RBI.  Sebert also had a double and an RBI.  N. Lorang pitched three innings allowing three runs, two earned, on three hits and four walks with four strikeouts.  Grocott pitched 2 1/3 innings allowing four runs, none of them earned, on two hits with a walk and three strikeouts.  Holewa pitched 1 2/3 innings allowing a hit with two strikeouts.

Late Rally Not Enough for Gamecocks

A four-run rally in the seventh inning was not enough for the Hartford-Humboldt Gamecocks as the Canova Gang held on for a 5-4 win on Sunday, July 11th.

Canova built a 5-0 by scoring a run in the top of the fourth and four more in the top of the fifth inning. The Gamecocks put together a four-run seventh inning. Tyler Renken and Chad Morrison back-to-back RBI ground outs to cut the lead to 5-2. Joe Maras had a two-run home run in the inning as well to pull the Gamecocks within a run at 5-4. Hartford-Humboldt threatened to tie the game in the bottom of the ninth by getting two runs on base, but they were unable to get the tying run home.

Drew DeMers and Joe Hanisch both had three hits in the game. Maras had a home run and two RBIs. Cole Hellie, Drew Maras, and Clayton Hanisch all had singles. Renken and Morrison both had an RBI. Noah Vettrus pitched four innings allowing an unrearned run on three hits with two walks and a strikeout. D. Maras pitched three innings allowing four runs, three earned, on six hits with a walk and strikeout. J. Hanisch pitched an inning allowing just one hit. Broc Haldeman also pitched an inning with a walk and strikeout.

Svoboda Home Run Lifts Wood Ducks to Victory

Blake Svoboda hit a three-run home run in the fifth inning which proved to be game-winning hit as the Hartford-Humboldt Wood Ducks defeated the Flandreau Cardinals 4-3 on Sunday, July 11th.  Drew Eldeen had two hits, including an RBI double in the third inning.

Hartford Sparx Claim 2021 State Fastpitch Softball Tournament Championship

The Hartford Sparx won the 2021 South Dakota 18U B Division Fastpitch State Tournament championship held at Sherman Park in Sioux Falls Friday, July 9th through Sunday, July 11th.

The Sparx opened the tournament with a 12-3 win over the Rebels on Friday.  Hartford scored in every inning, including eight in the fourth, for the win.  Addy Kramer had three hits, two doubles and a home run, with four RBIs.  Grace Harden had three hits and three RBIs.  Olivia Brown had three hits, including a home run and a double, with two RBIs.  Caitlyn Maa had two hits and an RBI.  Avery Evans had two hits, one a double.  Riley Morrison had two hits.  Brooke Opitz had a double and an RBI.  McKenna Sichmeller had a hit, and Jenna Lueth had an RBI.  Taylor Kunzweiler pitched five innings allowing three earned runs on five hits with two walks and three strikeouts.

Hartford won their second game on Friday against Fusion Heat 4-0.  The Sparx got a run in the first, two more in the fifth, and another in the sixth while holding Fusion Heat to just three hits.  Maa had a double and two RBIs.  Kunzweiler had two hits.  Morrison had a hit and an RBI.  Opitz and Harden both had singles.  Kramer also had an RBI.  Harden pitched seven innings allowing just three hits with three walks and six strikeouts.

In the semifinals of the winner’s bracket, the Sparx defeated Mitchell Adrenaline 11-2 to advance to the championship game undefeated.  Hartford again scored in every inning while pulling away from Mitchell for the win.  Opitz had three hits, including a home run and double, with three RBIs.  Maa had two hits and five RBIs.  Lueth finished with two hits.  Harden had a hit and two RBIs.  Evans and Morrison both had a hit as well.  Harden pitched four innings allowing two runs, both unearned, on four hits with three strikeouts.

Hartford met Fusion Heat in the championship game.  The scoreless game was broken in the bottom of the third when Fusion Heat got a home run.  It was just one of their three hits, but was the difference in the game as Fusion Heat beat the Sparx 1-0 to force a second championship game.  Evens had two hits for Hartford.  Opitz, Harden, Kunzweiler, and Sichmelleer all had singles.  Harden pitched five innings allowing one earned run on three hits with three strikeouts.

With each team now having one loss, the Sparx and Fusion Heat played one more time to determine the championship.  This time the Sparx used a pair of four run innings to take the title with an 8-3 win.  Fusion Heat scored three runs in the top of the second, but Hartford had a four-run bottom of second inning and four-run third inning for the win.

Harden had three hits, including a double, and three RBIs.  Opitz had two hits and an RBI.  Sichmeller had a double and two RBIs.  Kramer had a solo home run.  Morrison had a single and RBI.  Evans also had a hit.  Harden pitched four innings allowing three earned runs on six hits with four strikeouts.
