Hamlin Hands Quarriers First Loss

December 21, 2013 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

Quarrier LogoThe Hamlin Chargers defeated the Dell Rapids Quarriers 50-29 at the Girls Entringer Classic in Flandreau on Saturday, December 21st.  Dell Rapids was only able to hit one field goal in the first half as Hamlin led after the first quarter 12-6.  The Chargers held Dell Rapids to just one point in the second quarter and took a halftime lead of 24-7.  Hamlin extended the lead to 37-17 after the third quarter.

Dell Rapids shot 9-35 from the field for 26% in the game.  They were 10-22 from the free throw line for 45%.  The Quarriers had 20 rebounds as a team, five assists, five steals, and 22 turnovers.  Hamlin, meanwhile, shot 20-45 from the field for 44%. They were 9-16 from the free throw line for 56%.  The Chargers had 26 team rebounds, 11 assists as a team, 11 steals, and turned the ball over 19 times.

Dell Rapids was led by Mikaela Stofferahn with 10 points.  Jordan Stone had seven points and five rebounds in the game.  Hannah Welbig finished with four points for the Quarriers.  Molly Koisti of Hamlin was named the game MVP.  She finished with 16 points, five rebounds and one assist.

Head coach Jeff Dvorak said, “Today’s game was lost before we even stepped on the court.  Mentally we just did not show up until the 2nd half – and that is too late versus a good team. I believe that we started so well in our first two games and that led to a false sense that we just had to show up and it would happen – obviously, it didn’t ‘happen’ today.  Hamlin has an aggressive team, and we were not ready for that speed.  Young teams such as ours need to face this type of adversity to learn and grow.  We certainly had our confidence rocked today, but in the end we will become tougher and better for it.”

Dell Rapids falls to 2-1 on the year.  The Quarriers next game will be Saturday, December 28th, at the Parkston Classic.  Dell Rapids will take on Aberdeen Roncalli at 2:30 p.m.

Tri-Valley Girls Win Close Battle Against Dell Rapids

February 2, 2013 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

The Tri-Valley Mustangs defeated the Dell Rapids Quarriers 45-36 on Friday, February 1st, at Tri-Valley High School.  The Mustangs led 23-18 at halftime.

Head coach Jeff Dvorak said, “Tri-Valley has a very big and strong club,  and we certainly played right with them the whole way.”

Julie Rice led the Quarriers with nine points and four rebounds in the game.  Karen Eddy had eight points and four steals.  Dell Rapids shot 33% from the field and 3-4 from the free throw line.  The Quarriers also committed 17 turnovers in the game.

” In tight games versus good teams, we can’t afford unforced mistakes, and we had too many of those tonight.  17 turnovers versus a team that didn’t press is just not going to do it. Overall, we took away some good lessons that we’ll carry into our final stretch – execute our offense, avoid unforced errors, keep playing strong defense and have confidence that we can play with anyone,” said Dvorak.

Dell Rapids falls to 5-11 on the year.  The Quarriers will travel to Salem to take on McCook Central/Montrose on Thursday, February 7th.

Quarriers Use 2nd Half Run for Win

January 30, 2013 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

The Dell Rapids Quarriers girls basketball team used a strong second half to come from behind and defeat the Canton C-Hawks 25-28 on Tuesday, January 29th, in Dell Rapids.  Canton held a 10-8 at the end of the first quarter after a last second three-point shot.  The C-Hawks maintained the lead in the second quarter for a 16-12 halftime lead.  Canton jumped out to a 20-12 lead with 5:36 left in the third quarter before the Quarriers made their move.  Dell Rapids went on an 11-0 run to end the third quarter to take a 23-20 lead.  The game was back and forth  for most of the fourth quarter.  The game was tied at 23-23 and again 25-25 with 4:00 left in the game.  Canton held a slight 26-25 lead with 3:00 to go, but the Quarriers out-scored Canton 10-2 in the remaining minutes for the win.

Dell Rapids was led by Mikaela Stofferahn with nine points in the game.  Brittany Kludt had eight points, and Brittney Siemonsma, Rachel Devlin, Corynn Hoff, and Julia Rice all had four points apiece in the game.  The Quarriers finished 11-17 from the free throw line.  Canton was led by Kristin Twedt with 12 points.  Atlanta Lundstrom added nine points.  The C-Hawks were 5-8 from the free throw line in the game.

Head coach Jeff Dvorak said, “In the first half we just found a variety of ways to shoot ourselves in the foot offensively.  Thankfully, our defense once more kept us close until we woke up a bit and started going inside against a smaller Canton team. Mikaela and Kludt really carried us in that second half, and the guards did a good job of feeding them the ball. In the second half we were much closer to the team we need to be going down the stretch and that is encouraging.”

Dell Rapids improves to 5-10 on the year.  The Quarriers will travel to Tri-Valley to take on the Mustangs on Friday, February 1st.

Tanagers Beat Quarriers on Last Second Shot

January 26, 2013 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

The Vermillion Tanagers defeated the Dell Rapids Quarriers in dramatic fashion, 25-22, on Thursday, January 24th in Dell Rapids.  The Quarriers held a slim 9-7 lead after halftime.  Vermillion was able to take a three-point lead, 19-22, late in the fourth quarter.  With just 27.8 seconds left in the game, Karen Eddy hit a three-point shot to tie the game at 22-22.  After a timeout with 6 seconds left, Vermillion’s Blair Gilkyson hit a three-point shot at the buzzer from the top of the key to give the Tanagers the 25-22 win.

Julie Rice led the Quarriers with eight points and eight rebounds.  Eddy had six points.  Dell Rapids shot just 16% from the field and went 5-13 from the free throw line.

Head coach Jeff Dvorak said, “Our defense is keeping us in games right now, and I’m proud of that effort.  We must find players who can hit free throws and the bunnies we are getting, and right now those players are not consistently there.  We must continue our effort and faith that we are not that far away from being a good team. I think we all see improvement, but we’re hitting the point of the season when we need to find ways to win these tight games.”

Dell Rapids falls to 4-10 on the year.  The Quarriers will host Canton on Tuesday, January 29th.  The game will be webcast on Big Sioux Media.

Quarriers Win Close Game Against Sioux Valley

January 19, 2013 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

The Dell Rapids Quarrier girls basketball team defeated the Sioux Valley Cossacks 30-26 on Friday, January 18th, in Volga.  Dell Rapids held a seven point halftime lead at 13-6, and hung on to beat the Cossacks for their fourth win of the season.

Dell Rapids shot 36% from the field, went 3-9 from the free throw line, and out rebounded Sioux Valley 24-16 in the game.  Julia Rice led the Quarriers with 11 points, nine rebounds and four steals.  Karen Eddy added six points and three steals.

Head coach Jeff Dvorak said, “What a nice win.  Our defense execution was perfect tonight.  Sioux Valley has a bunch of good perimeter shooters, and we did a great job of getting and contesting those looks.  We did not close out the game quite as strongly as we’d have liked as our 13 point lead shrunk to three, but we are getting better at handling those pressure-filled moments when teams have nothing to lose and are coming at us 100 miles an hour. It was a great lesson to learn how to win a tight game and hold onto a lead.”

Dell Rapids improves to 4-8 on the year.  The Quarriers will travel to Beresford to take on the Watchdogs on Tuesday, January 22nd.
