The Dell Rapids Quarrier softball team rallied for five runs in the final two innings to earn a come-from-behind, walk-off win over the Vermillion Tanagers, 5-4, at home on Tuesday, May 19th.
The Tanagers grabbed the lead, 1-0, with a run in the top of the first inning. They added two more runs in the top of the second for an early 3-0 lead. The score remained 3-0 until the top of the sixth. Vermillion scored one more time to make the score 4-0.
Dell Rapids started to pick up some momentum with two outs in the bottom of the sixth. Josie Becker had an RBI single, and Sylea Sykes followed with an RBI single to cut the lead in half, 4-2. After shutting down Vermillion in the top of the seventh, the Dell Rapids offense got back to work in the bottom of the inning. Makenna Wilber and Lexi Scherff hit back-to-back singles to start the inning. After a sacrifice bunt by Ella Johnson to move the runners to second and third, Aisley Grib tied the game with a two-run single. Grib was able to steal second during the at bat of Gabby Carstensen. Carstensen hit a line drive single to center to score Grib for the game-winning run.
Grib had four hits in the game, one of them a double, and two RBIs. Becker had two hits and an RBI. Carstensen and Sykes both had a single and RBI each. Scherff, Emma Lanpher, and Wilber all had one hit each. Emily Baker pitched 1 2/3 innings and allowed three runs, two earned, on two hits and six walks with one strikeout. Scherff pitched 5 1/3 innings and allowed an unearned run on three hits with seven strikeouts.
