The 2023 South Dakota State B Amateur Baseball tournament run came to an end for Dell Rapids PBR in Mitchell on Saturday, August 12th. The Canova Gang scored nine straight runs on their way to a 14-4 win in eight innings.
Tanner Solberg put PBR in front right away in the bottom of the first inning with a two-out, two-run single. Dell Rapids continued to lead 2-0 until the top of the fourth. Canova took advantage of an error and three walks to score two runs and tie the game 2-2. The game was still tied 2-2 after five innings of play, but Canova then scored five runs in the top of the sixth and two more in the seventh for a 9-2 lead. PBR put two runs on the board in the bottom of the seventh, but the Gang added five more runs in the eighth.
Brayden Pankonen had two hits and an RBI. Riley Calhoon also had two hits. Solberg finished with a single and two RBIs. Chris Burke, Weston Hansen, and Conner Spindler all had one single each. Riley Hoffman had an RBI. Pankonen pitched 5 1/3 innings and allowed seven runs, three earned, on six hits and four walks with five strikeouts. Hoffman pitched 1 2/3 innings and allowed two unearned runs on three hits with one strikeout. B Donovan pitched 2/3 of an inning and allowed an earned run on three hits. Solberg threw 1/3 of an inning and allowed four earned runs on two hits and two walks.
