Mudcat Season Ends in Dramatic Fashion at State B Tournament

A bid for a third straight state title for the Dell Rapids Mudcats came to an end in the second round of the 2023 South Dakota State B Amateur Baseball Tournament in Mitchell on Sunday, August 6th.  After an opening round win on Thursday, August 3rd, the Mudcats lost in 10 innings to Tabor on Sunday.

Dell Rapids led 4-2 after four and one half innings of play in the first round on Thursday. Then the Mudcats erupted for 10 runs in the last four inning to win by the 10-run rule.

Trevor Freudenthal and Carter Gullickson each had two hits.  Spencer Freudenthal, Chad Hunt, and Dalton Lehnen all had one hit each.  Dalton Allen pitched four innings and allowed two runs on four hits with six strikeouts.  Deon Entringer, a pick-up player from Colman, pitched two innings and struck out three batters.  Lehnen pitched one inning and recorded one strikeout.

Tabor 2, Dell Rapids Mudcats 1 – 10 innings

The two teams got locked into a pitcher’s duel on Sunday.  Lehnen pitched 8 1/3 innings and allowed one earned run on three hits and three walks with 19 strikeouts.  Riley Rothschadl did not allow a run on this time on the mound for Tabor.  He allowed eight hits and one walk with 12 strikeouts in six innings of work.

Tabor got on the board with an RBI ground out in the third inning.  They continued to lead 1-0 until an RBI double by Kris Regas in the eighth inning that tied the game.  After neither team scored in the ninth, the game went to extra innings.  The Mudcats were retired in order in their half of the 10th inning.  The first two batters reached on a single for Tabor in the bottom of the inning.  Nolan Carda then hit a walk-off RBI single to give Tabor the 2-1 win.

T. Freudenthal and Hunt both had three hits each in the game.
