In a battle of top five teams, the Dell Rapids Quarriers put together a big second half for a 28-22 victory over the Canton C-Hawks on Friday, September 16th.
The defenses held the opposing offenses in check the entire first half. The only score in the first two quarters of play was a 19-yard touchdown run by Tayten Aasheim with 9:57 left in the second quarter. The two-point conversion was no good. Canton led 6-0 at halftime.
Dell Rapids got a score in their opening drive of the second half. Mason Stubbe had a five-yard touchdown run with 8:42 in the third quarter. The two-point conversion was good, and the Quarriers led 8-6. Just ten seconds later, Brayden Pankonen had one of his two interceptions. With 6:15 to play in the quarter, Sutton Williams had a six-yard touchdown run to give Dell Rapids a 14-6 lead.
Canton put together a good drive and was threatening to score late in the third quarter. Pankonen came up with his second interception at a key spot in the game. He intercepted a pass in the end zone to end the Canton scoring threat. Stubbe had his second rushing touchdown with 9:16 to play in the game on a 16-yard run. Camden Justice made the extra point to push the score to 21-6.
The C-Hawks added their score on a one-yard touchdown run with 6:41 left in the game. The two-point conversion was good to make the score 21-14. Dell Rapids got a big play on third down deep in their own zone on their next drive. Jack Henry ran a draw play that resulted in an 80-yard carry putting Dell Rapids in position for another score. Stubbe did just that with 3:21 on the clock with a 12-yard run. Justice made the extra point again, and Dell Rapids led 28-14. Canton got another score with 1:04 to play. The two-point conversion cut the lead to 28-22. The onside kick attempt went out of bounds giving the Quarriers the ball. They were able to run out the clock for the win.
Henry was 3-10 passing for 79 yards and an interception. Justice had a catch for 39 yards, Pankonen had a catch of 30 yards, and Stubbe had a catch for 10 yards. Stubbe finished with 20 carries for 152 yards and three touchdowns. Henry had seven carries for 123 yards. Williams added six carries for 22 yards and a touchdown.
Aiden Geraets and Will Jaton both had seven tackles in the game. Henry had six tackles. Pankonen finished with four tackles and two interceptions. Cole Ruesink had four tackles, and Stubbe had three tackles.
