West Central 14U Takes Fourth at State A Tournament

The West Central 14U baseball team took home a fourth place finish at the 2021 South Dakota VFW 14U Class A State Tournament held in Vermillion Friday, July 23rd through Sunday, July 25th.

West Central opened the tournament with a game against Spearfish on Friday.  West Central took the lead right away in the top of the first inning with a run.  They added another run in the top of the fourth inning for a 2-0 lead.  The big inning for West Central came in the top of the fifth when they scored four times for a 6-0 advantage.  Spearfish cut the lead in half in the bottom of the fifth with three runs, but West Central got an insurance run in the top of the sixth inning for the 7-3 victory.

CJ DenBoer had three hits in the game.  Caden Alfson had two hits, a double and triple, with an RBI.  Jesse Jost had a hit and two RBIs.  Keaton Vessells had a double.  Landen Holewa, Jack Sebert, and Cain Grocott all had a single.  Lando Whiting had an RBI.  Anthony Lanham pitched 4 2/3 innings allowing three runs, none of them earned, on two hits with six walks and two strikeouts.  Sebert pitched 2 1/3 innings allowing just one hit with two strikeouts.

West Central then met the host team, Vermillion, in the semifinals on Saturday.  West Central built an early lead.  Sebert had an RBI single in the first inning, Holewa reached on an error that also scored Grocott in the top of the second inning, and Sebert then had an RBI ground out in the third inning to give West Central a 3-0 lead.  Vermillion got a run back in the bottom of the third to make the score 3-1.  Vermillion plated another run in the bottom of the sixth inning.  Vermillion completed the comeback with two runs in the bottom of the seventh for the 4-3 win.

Jost had two hits.  Sebert had a hit and two RBIs.  Whiting also had a hit.  Alfson pitched 5 2/3 innings allowing two runs, one earned, on two hits with four walks and nine strikeouts.  Holewa pitched  2/3 of an inning giving up two runs, one earned, on four walks and one strikeout.

West Central finished the tournament against Winner in the 3rd/4th place game on Sunday.  Winner got the first score in the top of the first inning.  West Central tied the game in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI sacrifice fly by Alfson.  Winner got two runs in the top of the fifth, which proved to be the difference as Winner took the game by a score of 3-1.

Nick Lorang, Jost, and Holewa all had a single in the game.  Alfson had an RBI.  Vessells pitched two innings allowing an earned run on a hit with four walks and a strikeout.  Jost pitched 4 1/3 innings allowing two runs, neither of them earned, on four hits with four walks and three strikeouts.  Sebert pitched 2/3 of an inning.

Wood Ducks Drop Two Games at District 4B Tournament

The Hartford-Humboldt Wood Ducks lost both of their games at the District 4B tournament in Colman ending their 2021 season.  The Wood Ducks entered the tournament as the ninth seed.  They played eighth-seeded Salem on Friday, July 23rd and then third-seeded Lennox on Sunday, July 25th.

Despite out-hitting Salem in the game, the Wood Ducks gave up four runs in the seventh and four more in the eighth inning as Salem got an 8-2 victory.  Austin Smith had an RBI single for the Wood Ducks in the top of the second to give them a 1-0 lead.  R Lind followed that with a solo home run in the top of the third for a 2-0 lead.  The score remained 2-0 until Salem scored their eight combined runs in the seventh and eighth innings.

Lind had three hits in the game, including the home run, with an RBI.  Smith had two hits and an RBI.  Drew Eldeen, Blake Svoboda, Tyler Lundborg, and Philip Madsen all had singles in the game.  Svoboda pitched 6 1/3 innings allowing three runs, two earned, on four hits with five walks and five strikeouts.  Nick Seliski pitched 1 2/3 innings allowing five runs, four earned, on six hits and a walk.

The Wood Ducks then had to face Lennox in an elimination game on Sunday.  Lennox earned a 5-2 victory thanks to a complete game pitched by Drew Sweeter and two home runs by Corey Vasquez.

Hartfold-Humboldt Gamecocks out of District 4B Tournament

The Hartford-Humboldt Gamecocks had their season come to an end after back-to-back losses at the District 4B tournament in Colman.  The Gamecocks lost their first game on Saturday, July 24th and then lost their second game on Sunday, July 25th.

Going into the district tournament as the fourth seed, the Gamecocks took on the fifth-seeded Flandreau Cardinals on Saturday.  Flandreau scored three runs in the first two innings, picked up another run in the top of the fifth, and then scored six times in the top of the sixth inning for a 10-0 lead.  The Gamecocks were held to just two hits, and the game ended in the seventh inning on the 10-run rule with Flandreau winning 10-0.

Tyler Renken had a double, and Drew DeMers had a single for the two hits.  Renken pitched 5 1/3 innings allowing eight runs, seven earned, on eight hits with three walks and two strikeouts.  Noah Vettrus pitched 1 2/3 innings allowing two earned runs on a hit with a walk.

The loss sent the Gamecocks to the loser’s bracket to play the seventh-seeded Colman A’s on Sunday in an elimination game.  Colman also scored three runs in the first two innings for a 3-0 lead.  The Gamecocks tied the game in the bottom of the third inning with a three-run double by Joe Hanisch.  Colman regained the lead in the top of the fifth with two runs, but the Gamecocks took the lead for the first time in the bottom of the inning with three more runs.  Devon Garry had an RBI single, and Hanisch had a two-run home run to give the Gamecocks a 6-5 lead.  The lead was short-lived as Colman picked up two more runs in the top of the sixth inning and then five more in the top of the eighth for a 12-6 lead.  The Gamecocks tried to make a comeback.  Hanisch had an RBI single, Garry scored on an error, and Jon Maras had an RBI single to cut the lead to 12-9, but that was all the Gamecocks would get as Colman took the win.

Hanisch had three hits, including a home run and double, and drove home six runs.  Garry had two hits and an RBI.  Cam Quigley and Drew Maras both had two hits.  J. Maras had a hit and an RBI.  Broc Haldeman had a double, and Renken had a single.  Micah Warrington pitched 5 2/3 innings allowing seven runs, only one earned, on eight hits and three walks with a strikeout.  Cole Barthel pitched 1 1/3 innings allowing just one walk.  Haldeman pitched 2/3 of an inning allowing five earned runs on four hits with two walks and a strikeout. Quigley pitched 1 1/3 innings allowing three hits with a strikeout.

West Central 16U Wins Slugfest Against Tea

The West Central 16U baseball team came out on the right side of a slugfest on Thursday, July 22nd against Tea.  The two teams combined for 25 runs and 20 hits with West Central getting the 18-7 victory in six innings.

West Central scored the first run in the top of the first inning.  Tea took the lead in the bottom of the second inning with two runs.  West Central responded with four straight.  They scored two runs in the top of the third and two more in the top of the fourth for a 5-2 advantage.  Tea tied the game with three runs in the bottom of the fourth.  West Central, however, took the lead for good with two runs in the top of the fifth and then exploded for 11 runs in thee top of the sixth inning to go ahead 18-5.  Tea scored just two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, and the game ended on the 10-run rule.

Gage Nelson finished with three hits.  Derek Renken had two hits, one a double, and five RBIs.  Andrew Zimmer had two hits and four RBIs.  Camden McDonald had two hits and two RBIs.  Dueece Sherard added a single and an RBI.  Will Nester had a double.  Both Dylan Stromer and Cade Vander Woude had a single.  Dalton Mulder had one RBI in the game.

Mulder pitched five innings allowing five runs, four earned, on five hits with four walks and eight strikeouts.  Vander Woude pitched an inning giving up two runs, both unearned, on two hits with a strikeout.

Hartford/Humboldt Legion Falls Just Short of State Tournament

The Hartford/Humboldt Legion baseball team fell just short of a state tournament trip finishing second at the Region 5B tournament Monday, July 19th through Wednesday, July 21st in Canova.

In their opening game on Monday, Hartford/Humboldt scored two times in the top of the seventh and then held Canova scoreless in the bottom of the inning to get a 4-3 win.  Jack Linneman had an RBI double in the top of the second inning to give Hartford/Humboldt an early 1-0 lead.  Canova took the lead with two runs in the bottom of the third.  Landry Knight had an RBI single in the top of the fifth to tie the game 2-2.  Canova regained the lead with a run in the bottom of the sixth.  Hartford/Humboldt then got a two-out, two-run single by Logan Maras to get the victory.

L. Maras had two hits and two RBIs.  Gavin Koch and Cooper Maras both had two hits, with both having one double.  Ryan Healy and Bennett Sebert both had two hits each.  Linneman had a double and an RBI, and Knight had a hit and an RBI.  Healy pitched 5 1/3 innings allowing three runs, two earned, on five hits with six walks and four strikeouts.  Knight pitched 1 2/3 innings allowing just one hit and one walk with one strikeout.

Hartford/Humboldt then faced Lake Norden/Badger in a semifinal game on Tuesday.  Hartford/Humboldt was held to just two hits the entire game as Lake Norden/Badger cruised to a 9-0 win.  Healy had a double in the game, and Knight also had a hit.  Braden Herr pitched 3 1/3 innings allowing six runs, five earned, on seven hits with two walks and two strikeouts.  Brodie Herr allowed two earned runs on two walks.  L. Maras pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up an earned run on two hits with a walk.  Adam Parsons pitched two innings giving up a hit and had two strikeouts.

The loss meant Hartford/Humboldt had to play an elimination game also on Tuesday, and they met Canova again.  Hartford/Humboldt scored two times in the top of the first, but Canova responded with four in the bottom of the inning for a 4-2 lead.  The lead was short-lived as Hartford/Humboldt plated five runs in the top of the second.  The score remained 7-4 until the top of the sixth inning.  Both teams scored four times in the inning making the score 11-8 heading into the seventh.  Hartford/Humboldt added two more runs, while holding Canova to just one, to take the 13-9 win and advance to the championship game against Lake Norden/Badger.

C. Maras had three hits, one double, and three RBIs.  Knight finished with two doubles and three RBIs.  Healy also had two doubles and an RBI.  Bennett Sebert had two hits, one double, and an RBI.  L. Maras had two hits and an RBI.  Linneman had a single and two RBIs.  Braden Herr also had a hit, and Gavin Koch had an RBI.  C. Maras pitched 1/3 of an inning allowing four earned runs on two hits and two walks.  Parsons pitched 4 1/3 innings allowing just four hits and three walks with four strikeouts.  Koch pitched 2 1/3 innings allowing five runs, four earned, on seven hits with a walk and four strikeouts.

Hartford/Humboldt got another chance at Lake Norden/Badger in the championship game on Wednesday.  Lake Norden/Badger was once again too strong for Hartford/Humboldt.  Lake Norden/Badger got out to a 3-1 lead after two innings and scored three more times for the 6-1 win to advance to the state tournament.

Healy, Braden Herr, and Linneman had three hits in the game.  Knight pitched four innings allowing six runs, three earned, on five hits and three walks.  Linneman pitched three innings allowing two hits and a walk with three strikeouts.

Wood Ducks Finish Regular Season

The Hartford-Humboldt Wood Ducks finished the Cornbelt League season with a game on Thursday, July 15th and Sunday, July 18th.

After a win over Flandreau (4-3) on Sunday, July 11th, the Wood Ducks played the Dell Rapids Mudcats on Thursday the 15th.  Dell Rapids took the 5-1 victory in the game.  The Wood Ducks then closed out the regular season against Colman on Sunday the 18th.  Colman handed the Wood Ducks a 5-1 loss.

Hartford-Humboldt Wood Ducks finished the league season with a 6-12 record.  They will be the #9 seed in the District 4B Tournament held in Colman July 23rd through 31st.  The Wood Ducks will play #8 seed Salem in the first game of the tournament on Friday, July 23rd at 6:00 p.m.

Tri-Valley 16U Comes from Behind to Beat West Central 16U

Tri-Valley 16U came from three runs behind to beat West Central 16U 7-5 in Colton on Monday, July 19th.

West Central’s Andrew Zimmer had an RBI ground out to shortstop in the top of the first inning.  Gage Nelson had an RBI double followed by an RBI double by Duece Sherard to give West Central a 3-0 lead after two innings.

Tri-Valley picked up two runs in the bottom of the third inning.  Kaden Egger had an RBI single, and then Everett Althoff had an RBI single to cut the lead to 3-2.  West Central extended the lead back to three runs with two more in the top of the fourth inning.  Sherard had an RBI single, and D Mulder drove home a run on a single for a 5-2 advantage.

Tri-Valley then had a four-run bottom of the fourth.  Tanner Van Asselt had an RBI single.  Lawson Loiseau also had an RBI ground out.  Ledger Burggraff brought home the tying run on an RBI double, and Holden Rise scored on a passed ball to give Tri-Valley a 6-5 lead.  Tri-Valley added another run in the bottom of the sixth when Loiseau scored on a passed ball.

Sherard had three hits, including a double, and two RBIs for West Central.  Mulder and Nelson both had two hits each, one a double, and an RBI.  Camden McDonald had a double, and Owen Heath had a single.  Zimmer pitched four innings allowing six runs, four earned, on seven hits with one walk and five strikeouts.  Heath pitched two innings allowing an unearned run on four hits with a walk and four strikeouts.

Althoff and Loiseau both had two hits each and an RBI.  Noah Haynes also had two hits.  Burggraff had a double and an RBI.  Egger and Van Asselt both had a single and an RBI.  Beau Keith had a double, and Mason Hendrixson had a single.  Egger pitched 5 2/3 innings allowing five earned runs on nine hits with one walk and six strikeouts.  Keith pitched 1 1/3 innings walking two batters and striking out one.

Gamecocks Can’t Hold Comeback Lead, Fall to Madison in Regular Season Finale

The Hartford-Humboldt Gamecocks nearly pulled off a come-from-behind win after trailing 8-0 to Madison, but Madison scored two late runs to get an 11-10 win in the final regular season league game on Sunday, July 18th.

Madison scored a run in the top of the first inning and then got hot in the top of the fourth.  Madison scored seven times on five hits to take an 8-0 lead after four innings of play.  The Gamecocks started to chip away at the lead starting with two runs in the bottom of the fifth on an two-run single by Jon Maras.  Hartford-Humboldt scored four times in the bottom of the sixth.  Noah Vettrus received a bases-loaded walk, Drew DeMers brought home two with a double, and Devon Garry had an RBI sacrifice fly to cut the lead to 8-6.  The Gamecocks pulled within a run in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI single by Drew Maras. 

Madison added a run in the top of the eighth to extend their lead to 9-7.  The Gamecocks took the lead in the bottom of the eighth with three more runs.  Cole Hellie had a two-run single to tie the game.  J. Maras followed with an RBI ground out to put the Gamecocks in front 10-9.  Madison, however, scored two runs with two outs in the top of the ninth to retake the lead 11-10.  Hartford-Humboldt went down in order in the bottom of the ninth.

Tyler Renken had four hits.  Garry finished with three hits, one double, and an RBI.  DeMers had two hits, one double, and two RBIs.  Hellie had two hits and two RBIs.  J. Maras had a hit and three RBIs.  D. Maras had a hit and an RBI.  Dhad Morrison and Adam Hentges both had a hit, and Vettrus had an RBI.  Micah Warrington pitched 3 2/3 innings allowing five earned runs on eight hits with a walk and three strikeouts.  Vettrus pitched 1 1/3 innings allowing three earned runs on three hits with two walks.  Cole Barthel pitched two innings allowing a walk and had a strikeout.  Devon Garry pitched two innings allowing three earned runs on four hits with five walks and four strikeouts.

Gamecocks Win Pitcher’s Duel over Lennox

The Hartford-Humboldt Gamecocks and Lennox were locked in a pitcher’s duel in a close game on Thursday, July 15th in Lennox.

Lennox scored in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI ground out.  The score remained 1-0 until the top of the ninth.  After a single by Devon Garry and double by Joe Hanisch, Cole Hellie hit a ground ball and reached on an error by the shortstop.  Both Garry and Hanisch scored on the play to give the Gamecocks a 2-1 lead.  Lennox got two runners on base in the bottom of the ninth with two outs, but Hartford-Humboldt was able to keep Lennox off the board for a 2-1 win.

Drew DeMers and Hanisch both had a double in the game.  Garry had a single.  Tyler Renken pitched seven innings allowing one earned run on seven hits with three walks and three strikeouts.  Broc Haldeman pitched two innings allowing a hit with four strikeouts.

West Central 16U Wins Big over Hamlin

West Central scored 16 runs in just two innings in a 16-0 win over Hamlin on Thursday, July 15th.  The two teams were tied 0-0 after the first inning, but West Central then scored seven runs in the second inning and nine more in the bottom of the third to end the game on the 15-run rule.

Andrew Zimmere had two hits, one a double, and four RBIs.  Dylan Stromer had two hits and two RBIs.  Will Nester had a double with two RBIs.  Xzavian Ferris had a double and an RBI.  Cade Vander Woude and Jon Murray both had a single and an RBI.  Duece Sherard finished with a single.  Dalton Mulder, Owen Heath, and Gavin Gerlach all had an RBI. 

Heath pitched three innings giving up just two hits while striking out seven batters.
