Cardinal Boys See Season End in SoDak 16

DRSM LogoHeading into the SoDak 16 as the #14 seed, the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal boys basketball team saw their 2018-2019 season come to an end at the hands of the #3 seeded Clark/Willow Lake Cyclones.  The Cyclones defeated St Mary 66-33 at Sioux Valley High School on Tuesday, March 5th.

The two teams went back and forth throughout the first quarter.  The Cyclones led by as many as four points, but it was the Cardinals that held a slim 15-14 lead after the first quarter of play.  The Cyclones went on an 11-3 run in the first half of the second quarter for a 25-18 lead.  Clark/Willow Lake continued to take control of the game and ultimately outscored St Mary 21-5 for a 35-20 halftime lead.

Unfortunately for the Cardinals, the offense could not find it’s rhythm in the second half.  Clark/Willow Lake outscored St Mary 27-6 in the third quarter for a 62-26 lead.  The Cardinals outscored the Cyclones 7-4 in the final quarter.

St Mary finished the game shooting 31% (15-48) from the field, 5% (1-20) from the three-point area, and 25% (2-8) from the free-throw line.  The Cyclones finished the game shooting 55% (24-44) from the field, 33% (6-18) from three-point area, and 60% (12-20) from the free-throw line.  Clark/Willow Lake out-rebounded St Mary 34-22 in the game.

Connor Libis finished with 17 points and four rebounds.  Max Herber had nine points and five rebounds.  Weston Geraets had three points and three rebounds.  Ethan Geraets and Austin Greene-Lebrun each had 2 points.  The Cyclones were led by Jacob Prouty with 26 points, Micah Burke with 12 points and 12 rebounds, and Stone Burke with 11 points and 11 rebounds.

The St Mary Cardinals finished their 2018-2019 season with an 18-5 record.

Cardinal Boys One Game Away from State

DRSM LogoAfter taking a 20-point lead into the locker room at halftime, the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals survived a second half rally by the Colman-Egan Hawks and picked up a 64-62 win at the Corn Palace in Mitchell on Friday, March 1st.  The win sends the Cardinals to the SoDak 16.

The Cardinals got out to a fast start to start the game.  St Mary opened the game on a 10-1 run in the first three minutes.  The Hawks cut the lead to three points at 12-9 with two minutes to go, but St Mary finished the quarter leading 20-11.  The Cardinals again went on a run in the early part of the second quarter.  St Mary extended their lead to 30-13 with 4:51 to go in the half.  The lead grew to 20 points at 41-21 by halftime.

The Hawks cut the lead down to 12 points a couple of times in the third quarter, but St Mary led the Colman-Egan by 14 points at 56-42 heading into the final quarter.  Colman-Egan held St Mary scoreless over the first four minutes of the fourth quarter and cut the lead down to four points at 56-52.  Connor Libis ended the scoring drought with a left-handed layup with 3:35 to play to put the Cardinals ahead by six at 58-52.  Weston Geraets hit a shot from the left block with 2:24 to play to extend the lead to eight points at 60-52.  Leading by just three points with under a minute to play, Connar Kangas made two big free-throws to give St Mary a 64-59 lead.  Dalton Voelker hit an off-balance three-point shot from the left corner with :16 to go to make it a two-point game.  After two missed free throws by Libis, Colman-Egan secured the rebound.  Nate Tolley launched a last-second, three-point shot from the right wing that hit off the backboard and back of the rim, falling away no good giving St Mary the two-point victory.

Libis led St Mary in scoring with 28 points.  Sam Palmer finished with 14 points in the game.  Geraets had five rebounds and five assists in the game.  Voelker led Colman-Egan with 27 points, and Tolley added 17 points.

St Mary (18-4) will be the #14 seed in the SoDak 16 and play the #3 seeded Clark/Willow Lake Cyclones on Tuesday, March 5th.  Tip-off is at 7:00 p.m. at Sioux Valley High School.  Big Sioux Media is planning on streaming the game.

Quarrier Boys Headed Back to SoDak 16

The Dell Rapids Quarrier boys basketball team earned their second straight trip to the SoDak 16 after a 68-53 win over the Garretson Blue Dragons in the Region 3A Tournament on Friday, March 1st at the Elmen Center in Sioux Falls.  The game was much closer than the 15-point difference suggests.

Dell Rapids got out to an 8-4 lead in the first three minutes of the game and extended that lead to 10 points at 16-6 after a three-point basket by Colin Rentz with 3:39 to play in the opening quarter.  The Quarriers led 21-15 by quarter’s end.  Garretson went on an 11-2 run and took the 26-23 with 4:30 to play in the second quarter.  Dell Rapids responded with an 8-0 run to close out the quarter and regain the lead at 31-26 by halftime.

The Quarriers maintained about a six-point advantage over the first four minutes of the the second quarter, but the Blue Dragons cut the lead to 37-34 with just under four minutes to play in the quarter.  Dell Rapids did not let Garretson get any closer than that and pushed the lead back to nine points at 48-39 heading into the final quarter.  Logan Ellingson knocked down a three-point shot from the right wing with 6:33 to play in the game giving Dell Rapids a 12-point lead at 51-39.  Garretson rallied to cut the lead down to five points at 54-49 after a Drew Blosmo three-point shot with 4:00 to go.  Dell Rapids again responded and pushed the lead back to nine at 58-49.  The Blue Dragons would once again cut the lead down to five points at 58-53 with 2:12 remaining.  The Qurriers closed out the game on a 10-0 after a couple of made baskets and made free throws down the stretch.

Drew Van Regenmorter led Dell Rapids with 19 points in the game.  Connor Rentz had 16 points, Logan Heim added 13 points, and Ellingson finished with nine points.  The Blue Dragons were led by Trevor Fiegen and Blosmo with 22 points each.

Dell Rapids (13-7) will enter the SoDak 16 as the #12 seed and play the #5 seeded Parker Pheasants on Tuesday, March 5th at 7:00 p.m. at Sioux Falls Roosevelt High School.  The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Quarrier Girls Season Ends at Regions

NewDRLogoThe Dell Rapids Quarrier girls basketball team saw their season come to an end at the Region 3A tournament on Thursday, February 28th at Tea Area High School.  The Quarriers fell to the Sioux Falls Christian Chargers 63-47.

The Chargers and Quarriers traded baskets early in the first quarter.  The two teams were tied 5-5 with 5:37 to play in the quarter.  Dell Rapids then went on a 6-0 run to take an 11-5 lead with just under two minutes to play.  The Quarriers led 13-7 after the first quarter of play.   The Chargers turned the game around in the second quarter.  Sioux Falls Christian went on a 7-0 run to start the quarter and outscored Dell Rapids 27-6 to take a 34-19 lead at halftime.

The Chargers were able to keep their 15-point lead through the first half of the third quarter and led 39-24 with 4:09 to play.  The Chargers still led by 15 with 1:30 to play at 45-30, but Dell Rapids scored the final five points of the quarter to cut the lead down to ten points at 45-35.  The Quarriers scored first to start the fourth quarter to get the lead down to single digits at 45-37, but the Chargers responded with a 7-0 run to push the lead back to 15 at 52-37 with 6:15 to go in the game.  Dell Rapids was able to get within 11 points at 56-45 with 3:37 to go, but Sioux Falls Christian stopped any Quarrier rally to hang on for the win.

Three players finished in double figures for Dell Rapids.  Jayda Knuppe finished with 14 points.  Aspen Hansen had 11 points.  Emma Paul added 10 points, and Ravyn Hoffman added eight points.  The Chargers were led by Lexi Unruh with 24 points and Courtney Kellenberger with 16 points.

Dell Rapids finishes the season with a 14-8 record.

Cardinal Boys Take Step Forward in Postseason

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal boys basketball team took a step forward in the post season with a 56-37 win over the Chester Flyers at Dell Rapids St Mary High School on Thursday, February 28th.  The game was the second round of the Region 4B tournament.

The first quarter was closely contested between the two teams.  St Mary held just a one-point lead at 11-10 after the first quarter.  The Cardinals blew the game open in the second quarter as they held Chester scoreless over the first five minutes and scored 15 straight points.  St Mary outscored Chester 20-4 in the quarter and led 31-14 at halftime.

Chester tried to climb their way back into the game in the third quarter.  The Flyers cut the lead to 11 points at 40-29 with less than a minute to play in the quarter, but St Mary scored the final four points to enjoy 44-29 lead heading into the final quarter.  Chester could not get any closer than 13 points in the final quarter as the Cardinals cruised to victory.

Connor Libis had 30 points to lead St Mary.  Max Herber finished with 10 points and nine rebounds.  Chester was led by Bayden Schneider with 10 points and Aden Baumberger with eight points.

St Mary (17-4) advances to play the Colman-Egan in a SoDak 16 qualifying game on Friday, March 1st.  Tip-off is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. from the Corn Palance in Mitchell.  Big Sioux Media will have a live stream of the game.

Quarrier Girls Advance in Region 3A

The match-up has been set with the Sioux Falls Christian Chargers for the Dell Rapids Quarrier girls basketball team.  Dell Rapids will play the #2 seeded Chargers in one of the SoDak 16 Qualifying games of the Region 3A tournament after beating the Tri-Valley Mustangs 66-41 in the opening round on Monday, February 25th at Dell Rapids High School.

Tri-Valley used a slow-paced offense and a 2-3 zone in the opening quarter to frustrate the Quarriers.  The Mustangs took an 8-3 lead after a Paige Jewett three-point shot with 2:40 to play in the quarter, but Dell Rapids went on an 8-0 run to close out the quarter for an 11-8 lead.  The run continued into the third quarter as Dell Rapids built a 23-11 lead with 3:20 to play in the half.  Tri-Valley was able to cut the lead to 28-19 by halftime.

The Quarriers finally got into their style of game in the third quarter.  Their man-to-man pressure defense led to a more up-tempo offense, and the Quarriers outscored Tri-Valley 16-8 in the third quarter for a 44-27 lead.  They continued to apply the pressure in the fourth quarter and outscored the Mustangs 20-14 to cruise to victory.

Emma Paul led the Quarrier offense with 26 points in the game.  Jayda Knuppe finished with 19 points, and Aspen Hansen added nine points.  Ravyn Hoffman ended the game with five points and multiple assists.  Jewett led the Mustangs with 19 points.

Dell Rapids (13-7) will play Sioux Falls Christian on Thursday, February 28 at Tea Area High School.  Dell Rapids defeated the Chargers 53-51 earlier in the season on December 11th.  Tip-off on Thursday night is set for 8:00 p.m.  The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Quarrier Wrestling Has Two State Place Winners

The Dell Rapids Quarrier Wrestling program had two wrestlers place at the 2019 South Dakota State A Wrestling Tournament in Rapid City.  Andrew Weiland finished 8th in the 106-pound weight class, and Jacob Vogel had a 4th place finish in the 113-pound weight class.

The Quarriers finished with a total of 26.0 points and tied for 21st place as a team.  Rapid City Stevens won the team title with 162.5 points and Pierre T.F. Riggs was second with 133.5 team points.

Two of the seven Quarrier wrestlers advanced to Saturday’s final day at the 2019 South Dakota State A Wrestling Tournament in Rapid City.  Jacob Vogel and Andrew Weiland will be representing Dell Rapids on the final day of the tournament.  Vogel won both of his matches and will be in the semifinals.  Weiland lost his opening match, but battled back to earn two wins to advance in the wrestle-back side of the bracket.

Canyon Lowman, Max Lamer, and Gage Carr all lost their opening round matches, won the second bouts, but fell in their final match of the day on Friday.  Sam Cavigielli and Mitchell Klinkenborg both had two hard-fought matches.

Quarrier Boys Close Regular Season with Road Win

NewDRLogoPlaying in their second game in as many days, the Dell Rapids Quarrier boys basketball team closed out their 2018-2019 regular season with a road win against the Flandreau Fliers on Saturday, February 22nd.  Dell Rapids won the game 59-46 for a third straight victory.

The two teams were locked in a close battle in the first quarter with Dell Rapids holding a slim, three-point lead at 13-10 after the first quarter.  The Quarriers, however, put together a solid second and third quarters to put some distance between themselves and Flandreau.  The Quarriers outscored the Fliers 19-10 in the second quarter for a 32-20 halftime lead.  The lead grew to 50-33 after Dell Rapids outscored Flandreau 18-13 in the third quarter.  The middle two quarters proved to be enough to hold off a small Flandreau rally in the fourth quarter.

Colin Rentz finished the game with 12 points, four rebounds, and three assists.  Logan Ellingson also had 12 points along with two steals.  Connor Rentz added 11 points, six rebounds, and three assists.  Jacob Rechtenbaugh had seven points, and Drew Van Regenmorter finished with six points.  Flandreau was led by Connor Lebrun with 20 points and Tash Lunday wiht 17 points.

Dell Rapid finished the regular season with a 12-7 record and a #2 seed in the Region 3A tournament.  The Quarriers will earn a first round bye and will play on Friday, March 1st at the Elmen Center in Sioux Falls at 8:00 p.m.  The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Regular Season Ends in Win for Cardinal Boys

DRSM LogoPlaying in a make-up game against the Howard Tigers on Friday, February 22nd, the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal boys basketball team ended the regular season with a win.  The Cardinals defeated the Tigers 69-53 on a night the seniors were recognized.

The Cardinals were able to double-up the Tigers after the first quarter at 16-8.  Howard was able to stay within single digits over the first two and a half minutes of the second quarter, but St Mary pushed the lead to 19 points by halftime at 40-21.  Howard cut the lead down in the third quarter, but only slightly.  The Cardinals still lead by 16 points at 56-30 heading into the final quarter.  The Tigers outscored St Mary 23-13 in the final quarter, but it wasn’t enough for the comeback as the Cardinals took the win.

Three players finished in double figures for the Cardinals.  Connor Libis had 17 points.  Ethan Geraets had 13 points and 11 rebounds.  Max Herber finished with 10 points.  Howard was led by Jacob Brooks with 27 points and Colton Spader with 10 points.

The 2018-2019 seniors for the Cardinals are Avery Hof and Ethan Geraets.

St Mary finishes the regular season with a record of 16-4.  The Region 4B tournament will begin on Monday, February 25th.  The Cardinals will not play until Tuesday, February 26th at home after securing a top four seed.  Big Sioux Media will have the details of the tournament for St Mary as they become available, and Big Sioux Media will stream the game on Tuesday.

Quarrier Boys Get Key Road Win

Looking to keep themselves as the second seed in the Region 3A standings, the Dell Rapids Quarrier boys basketball team earned a key road win at Garretson on Thursday, February 21st.  The Quarriers beat the Blue Dragons 75-57.

Dell Rapids got out to a fast start and built a double-digit lead in the first quarter.  The Quarriers led 25-9 after the first quarter of play.  Dell Rapids pushed the lead to 22 points at 38-16 with 4:15 to play in the second quarter.  Garretson then went on an 18-5 run to cut the deficit to 43-34 by halftime.

Garretson cut the Quarrier lead to six points at 43-37 in the first minute of the third quarter and then again at 48-42 with 5:00 to go.  Dell Rapids then held Garretson to just two points the remainder of the quarter and led 56-44 heading into the final quarter.  The Quarriers closed out the game outscoring the Blue Dragons 19-13 in the final quarter.

Logan Ellingson had a team-high 24 points along with five rebounds.  Connor Rentz finished with 15 points.  Logan Heim tallied 13 points and 13 rebounds.  Drew Van Regenmorter also finished in double figures with 10 points and seven rebounds.  Colin Rentz had eight points and six assists in the game.

Dell Rapids (11-7) will look to end the regular season on a three-game winning streak when they travel to Flandreau to take on the Fliers on Friday, February 22nd.  Big Sioux Media will have a link to the Flandreau live stream of the game.
