Cardinal and Quarrier Runners Compete in Garretson

The Dell Rapids St Mary and Dell Rapids cross country teams both participated in the Jesse James Cross Country meet held at River Ridge Golf Course in Garretson on Tuesday, September 10th.

Both the Cardinal and Quarrier boy’s teams registered team scores.  Dell Rapids St Mary finished sixth with a team total of 87 points.  Dell Rapids finished eighth with 132 points.  Sioux Falls Christian won the team event with 12 points.  Beresford was second with 41 points, and Webster Area placed third with 65 points.

Jacob Vogel (DRSM) placed 10th with a time of 18:37.  Logan Anderson (DR) had a time of 19:24.  Ryan Eining (DRSM) was right behind at 19:25.  Seth Roemen (DRSM) had a time of 20:01.  Joshua Fletcher (DR) finished in 20:16.  Thomas Eining (DRSM) completed in a time of 20:22.  Noah Reiff (DRSM) had a time of 20:31.  Mitchell Heinemann (DR) finished at 21:22, and Avery Welbig (DR) had a time of 21:39.

Adisen Stadem (DR) placed 21st in the girls race with a time of 22:30.  Aspen Hansen (DR) had a time of 24:42.

Dell Rapids will run in the Sioux Falls Christian Invite on Tuesday, September 17th.  Dell Rapids St Mary will be at the De Smet Invite on Thursday, September 12th.

Cardinals Fall Short in Five-Set Thriller

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal volleyball team hit the road on Monday, September 9th to play the Ellsworth, MN Panthers.  The Panthers took the five-set thriller over the Cardinals.

St Mary won the first set by a score of 25-18.  The Panthers took extended second set at 27-25.  The Cardinals rebounded and won the third set 25-18.  However, Ellsworth, won the fourth set 25-23 to force the fifth and deciding set, and the Panthers came away victorious by a score of 15-13.

Courtney Brown finished with 13 kills and 10 digs in the match.  Ella Heinitz notched 10 kills, 12 set assists, 12 digs, and five blocks.  Ella Griffin added 18 set assists, seven digs, six blocks, and three kills.  Maya Heinitz led the team with 19 digs and also had five ace serves.  Paige Bunkers had nine ace serves.  Macie Brown had 15 digs and three ace serves.  Tyra Harrington added four kills and three blocks.

The Cardinals (5-3) will continue to play on the road on Thursday, September 12th.  St Mary will travel to Canistota to play the Hawks.

Busy Weekend for Cardinal and Quarrier Sports

It was a busy weekend of events for the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals and Dell Rapids Quarriers varsity sports teams.  The Cardinals volleyball and cross country teams were in action on Saturday, September 7th, while the Quarrier cross country, competitive cheer, and soccer teams all competed on Saturday.

The Cardinal volleyball team went to Estelline for the Estelline Tournament.  St Mary finished 2-2 at the tournament to see their season record move to 5-2.  St Mary’s boys cross country team won the 12-team Deubrook Invite.  Jacob Vogel placed second individually with a time of 18:12.  Thomas Eining was 15th with a time of 19:59, and Seth Roemen placed 19th at a time of 20:14.

The Quarrier cross country team was in Luverne on Saturday.  Adisen Stadem finished 9th with a time of 22:19.80.  Aspen Hansen finished in a time of 23:53.60, and Hannah VanOverbeke had a time of 25:06.90.  Logan Anderson was 3rd for the boys with a time of 18:32.90.  Canyon Lowman had a time of 20:01.60, and Mitchell Heinemann had a time of 20:23.20.  The Quarrier competitive cheer team took first place at the Dakota Valley Invite.  The Garretson/Dell Rapids Blue Dragon girls soccer team won their third match of the season after a 7-1 win over Worthington, MN during their annual Kick Out Cancer game.

Big Plays Lead to Cardinal Victory

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal offense used big plays and the defense held strong for a 28-0 win over the De Smet Bulldogs on Friday, September 6th in De Smet. This was the first road game for the Cardinals on the season.

Both defenses came to battle on the night. Neither team could really get much of a ground game going, but the Cardinals were able to connect on big plays to break through on the scoreboard.

Facing a fourth down, Weston Geraets scored on a 31-yard run with 2:25 to play in the first quarter. The two-point conversion was no good, but the Cardinals took the early 6-0 lead. On a more sustained drive, Geraets found the endzone again with 8:13 to go in the second quarter. Geraets scored on a six-yard run. Again the two-point conversion failed, and the Cardinals led 12-0. St Mary scored one more time before halftime. Another another fourth down play, Connor Libis threw a 50 yard touchdown pass to Geraets with :34 to go in the half. The two-point conversion was good on a pass from Libis to Eli Longville for a 20-0 lead heading into halftime.

The only score of the second half came with 2:51 to play in the third quarter. Libis connected with Max Herber on a 23-yard pass for a touchdown. Longville scored on the two-point conversion to extend the Cardinal lead to 28-0. The St Mary defense held strong again in the second half to keep the De Smet Bulldogs off the scoreboard in the shutout win.

St Mary had 250 total yards of offense, 131 rushing yards and 119 passing yards. De Smet was held to just 56 yards of total offense by the Cardinal defense.

Geraets had four carries for 49 yards and two touchdowns. Libis had 10 carries for 40 yards. Libis was also 6-16 passing for 119 yards and two touchdowns. Geraets had one catch for 50 yards for a touchdown. Herber had two catches for 50 yards and a touchdown. Longville had 19 receiving yards. Longville led the team on defense with 10 tackles. Gabriel Lindeman had seven tackles and a sack. Geraets had six tackles and three interceptions.

Head coach Ross Flemmer said, “The guys did a great job of overcoming a slow start and getting things rolling. I thought our defensive line played very well tonight.”

The Cardinals (3-0) will be on the road again on Friday, September 13th. St Mary will travel to Alcester to play the Alcester-Hudson Cubs. The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Second Quarter Surge Key to Quarrier Win

After a scoreless first quarter, the Dell Rapids Quarriers scored 28 points in the second quarter on their way to a 42-0 over the Flandreau Fliers on Friday, September 6th in their home opener of the 2019 season.

Logan Stone scored the first touchdown on a 44-yard run.  The extra point was no good, and the Quarriers led 6-0.  Colin Rentz connected with Logan Ellingson on a 58-yard strike down the left sideline with 5:14 to play in the half.  The two-point conversion was good on a run by Tyler Wood to make it a 14-0 lead.  After a Drew VanRegenmorter interception, Rentz and Ellingson connected again, this time on a 28-yard pass.  The extra point was good by Aiden Boechler, and Dell Rapids led 21-0.  The Quarriers were not done.  The Dell Rapids defense forced a Flandreau punt to give the Quarriers the ball with 1:28 to play in the half.  Dell Rapids marched down the field, and Stone scored on an 11-yard run with :34 to play in the second quarter.  The extra point put the Quarriers out in front 28-0 by halftime.

Dell Rapids added two more scores in the fourth quarter.  Carter Rentz scored on a five-yard run, and Landon VonHoltum scored on a four-yard run to close out the win.

The Quarriers finished the game with 439 yards of offense, 180 passing yards and 259 rushing yards.  Flandreau was held to just 89 total yards of offense, 61 passing yards and 28 rushing yards.  The Fliers had just seven first downs compared to 21 first downs for Dell Rapids.

Colin Rentz finished the game going 10-15 passing for 180 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception.  Ellingson had three catches for 95 yards and two tochdowns.  Coby Maeschen had a catch for 53 yards, and Wood had a catch for 33 yards.  Stone finished the game with 13 carries for 126 yards and two scores.  Trevon Cross led the defense with six tackles and a sack.  VanRegenmorter had five tackles and an interception. Logan Ruesink and Thane Hilmoe each had a fumble recovery.

Dell Rapids (2-0) will host the Madison Bulldogs on Friday, September 13th.  The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Quarrier Volleyball Drops Two During Week

The Dell Rapids Quarrier volleyball team completed a tough week of games by facing #4 Elk Point-Jefferson on Tuesday, September 3rd and #1 Sioux Falls Christian on Thursday, September 5th, both on the road.  It was the sixth and seventh matches for Dell Rapids in a span of a week.

The Quarriers held tough against the fourth-ranked Huskies on Tuesday.  Dell Rapids lost a tough first set by a score of 27-25, and then lost the next two sets by the same score of 25-18.

Dell Rapids then traveled to Sioux Falls to play the top-ranked Chargers on Thursday.  The Quarriers held a slim 10-9 lead in the first set, but Sioux Falls Christian went on a 9-2 run to take an 18-12 lead.  The Chargers would hold on for the set win at 25-16.

After the second set was tied 6-6, Dell Rapids scored three straight points for a 9-6 lead.  Again the Chargers went on a 9-2 run for a 15-11 lead.  Dell Rapids tied the set at 19-19, and then took the lead at 21-20.  The Chargers tied the set at 21-21 before Dell Rapids scored the next two points for a 23-21 lead.  Sioux Falls Christian scored the next three points for a 24-23 lead.  Dell Rapids tied it, but the Chargers scored the final two points for the 26-24 win.

Dell Rapids was within a point of the Chargers at 9-8, but Sioux Falls Christian reeled off six straight points for a 15-8 lead. The Chargers continued to roll from there, as they went on to win the set by a score of 25-14 and take the match.

Mackenzie Grisham led the team with five kills against the Chargers.  Mallory Haak had four kills.  Liz Prize had 17 set assists.  Grisham also led the team with 15 digs, while Gabi Rus had 12 digs.  Both Grisham and Rus had an ace serve.  Emma VanRegenmorter had a block.

The Quarriers (0-7) will be on a break for a week.  Dell Rapids will travel to Tea to play the Tea Area Titans on Thursday, September 12th.

Cardinals Win Third Straight Match to Start Season

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals continued their winning streak to start the 2019 season with a straight-set win over Mitchell Christian on Thursday, September 5th in Mitchell.

The Cardinals won by set scores of 25-21, 25-9, 25-11.

Macie Brown led the team with six kills on the night.  Courtney Brown had five kills, and Ella Heinitz had two kills.  Heinitz finished with 11 set assists, while Ella Griffin had seven assists.  Heinitz also led the team with five digs and eight ace serves.  C. Brown finished with three digs, and Maya Heinitz had two digs and six ace serves.  Tyra Harrington added seven ace serves on the night.

St Mary (3-0) will play in the Estelline Tournament on Saturday, September 7th.

Quarrier Cross Country Runners Race in Salem

The Dell Rapids Quarrier cross country teams ran in the MCM Invitational held at McCook Country Club in Salem on Tuesday, September 3rd. 

The Quarrier girls finished 10th as a team with 82 points.  Chamberlain won the girls team title with 14 points.  Winner Area was second with 21 points, and Flandreau placed third with 45 points.  The Dell Rapids boys team finished 8th with 79 points.  Flandreau was first with 30 points.  Winner Area placed second with 38 points, and Dell Rapids St Mary was third with 44 points.

For the girls team, Adisen Stadem finished with a time of 21:10.48.  Aspen Hansen had a time of 22:36.97, and Hannah VanOverbeke had a time of 22:57.63.

Logan Anderson finished in 18:24.52 for the boys.  Joshua Fletcher finished in 18:48.95.  Canyon Lowman had a time of 19:14.53, and Mitchell Heinemann had a time of 19:15.32.

Dell Rapids will be at the Luverne Invite in Luverne, MN on Saturday, September 7th.

St Mary Wins Thrilling Match over De Smet

They may have won in straight sets, but the match win for the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals was thrilling as they defeated the De Smet Bulldogs 28-26, 25-21, 25-20 on Tuesday, September 3rd.

Playing in their second straight home match to start the season, the Cardinals found themselves trailing 10-6 early in the first set.  The Bulldogs extended the lead to 15-8 before the Cardinals made their move.  St Mary went on a 10-3 run to tie the match at 18-18.  The Cardinals took the lead at 22-20, but De Smet tied the set at 22-22.  St Mary was at set point at 24-22, but the Bulldogs reeled off three straight points for a 25-24 lead.  St Mary regained the lead at 26-25 with De Smet again tying at 26-26.  The Cardinals took the final two points for the set win.

The second set was tied 6-6 early and then again at 11-11, but the Bulldogs went on a 6-1 run for a 17-12 lead.  St Mary countered with the biggest run of the night.  The Cardinals scored 10 straight points for a 22-17 lead.  St Mary wouldn’t let De Smet get any closer than two points at 23-21 before getting the win 25-21.

Momentum seemed to favor the Cardinals in the third set as they jumped out to an 11-3 lead.  The lead grew to 10 points at 14-4.  St Mary was able to maintain an eight-to-ten point lead over the next few points and led 17-8.  De Smet tried to mount a comeback and cut the lead down to 18-15.  That was as close as they would get as the Cardinals closed out the set for the match win.

Ella Heinitz finished with 14 set assists, six kills, six blocks, and six digs in the match.  Tyra Harrington had six kills, three blocks, and two digs.  Courtney Brown had four kills and seven digs.  Ella Griffin added nine set assists, seven blocks, five digs, two kills, and two ace serves.  Paige Bunkers had six ace serves.  Maya Heinitz led the team with 16 digs, and Macie Brown added five digs.

St Mary (2-0) will play a varsity only match in Mitchell against Mitchell Christian on Thursday, September 5th.

Quarrier Boys Golf Competes in Sioux Falls

The Dell Rapids Quarrier boys golf team competed at the Sioux Falls Christian Invite at Spring Creek Golf Course on Tuesday, September 3rd.  Dell Rapids finished 12th as a team with a score of 382.  Madison was first with a team total of 321.  Sioux Falls Christian was second with 323, and Vermillion placed third with a total of 325.

Karsen Welbig finished the day with a round of 83.  Lucas Berg had a round of 95.  Carter Traill finished at 101.  Brady Larson had a round of 103, and John Tudor finished with a 119.

The Quarriers will travel to the Bluffs Golf Course in Vermillion for the Vermillion Invite on Thursday, September 12th for their next tournament.
