Another Cardinal Girls Comeback Falls Short

DRSM LogoAnother comeback bid by the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal girls basketball team fell short on Monday, December 29th.  The Cardinals lost to the Chester Flyers 40-37 at St Mary High School.

Chester took the lead after the first quarter 14-8.  The Cardinals defense shut down the Flyers in the second quarter.  St Mary outscored Chester 7-2 in the second quarter and trailed by just one point at halftime 16-15.  Chester was able to extend their lead to 35-27 at the end of the third quarter.  The Cardinals could not quite complete the comeback in the fourth quarter even though St Mary outscored Chester 10-5.

The Cardinals were led by Lindsey Wolles with 18 points and two steals.  Ally Mullaney added 11 points, nine rebounds, and two steals.

St Mary falls to 0-7 on the year.  The Cardinals will travel to Marion on Friday, January 2nd.

Quarrier Boys Basketball Survives Against Sioux Valley

DRHSvsSV_BBB_12-27-14The Dell Rapids Quarrier boys basketball team survived against the Sioux Valley Cossacks at the Entringer Classic in Brookings on Saturday, December 27th.  The Quarriers moved to 3-0 with a 60-48 win.

Dell Rapids opened up the game on an 8-0 run and took a 10-2 lead with 4:15 left to go in the first quarter.  Sioux Valley scored the next seven points over the next two minutes to pull within 10-9 with 2:15 left in the quarter.  The Quarriers pushed the lead to 17-11, but Trevor Olson hit a three-point shot at the buzzer to pull the Cossacks within three points at 17-14 at the end of the first quarter.  Dell Rapids held a 23-20 lead two minutes into the second quarter before the Quarriers went on a 13-1 run to take a 36-21 lead with 2:30 left in the half.  Dell Rapids led by 13 at halftime at 40-27.

The second half proved to be difficult for the Quarrier offense.  Dell Rapids was only able to score three points in the third quarter, all from the free throw line.  Sioux Valley also struggled offensively in the third quarter as the Cossacks were only able to score nine points.  Dell Rapids still held a 43-36 lead after the third quarter.  The Quarriers finally made their first field goal of the second half with 4:0o left to go in the game.  The basket by Riley Schmidt pushed the Dell Rapids lead to seven points at 49-42.  Schmidt also knocked down a three-point shot with 2:40 to go to give Dell Rapids a 54-44 lead.  The Quarriers were able to hang on for the win.

Dell Rapids finished the night shooting 34% (18-53) from the field, 27% (6-22) from three-point area, and 72% (18-25) from the free throw line.  Sioux Valley finished the game shooting 30% (13-43) from the field, 30% (7-23) from three-point area, and 54% (15-28) from the free-throw line.  The Quarriers out rebounded Sioux Valley 42-34.  Dell Rapids also had 11 total assists, 10 steals, and just eight turnovers.

Ty Hoglund, game MVP, had 26 points and 11 rebounds in the game.  Riley Schmidt finished with 18 points and two assists.  Zane Schumaker finished with five points and nine rebounds.  Ben Hammer added four points, six rebounds, and four blocked shots.  The Cossacks were led by Zach Puetz with 13 points and 10 rebounds.

The Quarriers will host Pipestone Area in their next game on Tuesday, January 6th.  The game will be webcast on Big Sioux Media.

Quarrier Girls Basketball Falls to Wagner

NewDRLogoThe Dell Rapids Quarrier girls suffered their first loss of the season Saturday, December 27th, losing to Wagner 64-60 at the Parkston Girls Basketball Classic.

The Quarriers took a 5-0 lead in the first minute of the game, but the Red Raiders went on a 25-6 run the rest of the quarter to take a 25-11 lead. Dell Rapids was able to bounce back in the second and third quarters, shutting down Wagner’s up-tempo offense to eventually tie the game at 48-48 at the end of the third quarter.

After taking the lead a couple of times in the fourth, Dell Rapids was not able to overcome Wagner’s free throws as the Raiders hit 9 of 11 from the charity stripe in the final few minutes to seal the game and put the Quarriers’ record at 3-1.

Mikaela Stofferahn had a big game off the bench. The junior forward led Dell Rapids with 18 points and six rebounds. Eighth-grader Emma Paul also had a big game off the bench as she scored 11 points and pulled down 3 rebounds.

Wagner had four players finish in double-figures, led by Ali Kucha’s 17 points. Emily Brunsing had 12 points and 12 rebounds for a double-double while Bethany Sully and Brooke Roth also scored 12 each. Wagner out-rebounded Dell Rapids 31-23. Both teams had a high number of turnovers, as Dell Rapids had 26 turnovers compared to Wagner’s 20.

Dell Rapids will look to get back in the win column Monday night when it travels to Salem for a non-conference showdown with McCook Central/Montrose.

Cardinal Boys Basketball Rally Falls Short

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal boys basketball team lost to the Colman-Egan Hawks on Saturday, December 27th, at the Entringer Classic in Brookings by a final score of 52-38.

Colman-Egan started the game scoring the first 12 points to take a 12-0 lead with 4:45 to play in the first quarter.  The Cardinals were able to get a little offense going late in the first quarter and trailed 18-6 after the first.  St Mary made their run in the second quarter.  Trailing 22-10 with 5:30 left in the half, the Cardinals went on a 13-5 run to end the quarter and trailed the C-E Hawks 27-23 at halftime.

St Mary scored the first basket of the third quarter with 6:30 remaining to pull within two points at 27-25.  Colman-Egan scored the next four points to extend their lead to 31-25.  Noah Fiegen hit two free throws to close the gap to 31-27 with 5:34 left in the third quarter, however, the Cardinals were only able to get two more points in the quarter.  The C-E Hawks pushed their lead to 40-29 at the end of the quarter.  St Mary pulled within 10 at 41-31 with 5:50 to go in the game, but that was as close as they would get as Colman-Egan went on a 9-0 run to put the game away.

The Cardinals finished the game shooting 36% (16-45) from the field, 17% (1-6) from three-point area, and 50% (5-10) from the free-throw line.  St Mary had 35 team rebounds, seven assists, nine steals, and 25 turnovers.

Fiegen finished with 20 points and seven rebounds in the game.   Ryan Welbig and Mitch Brown each had four points.

The Cardinals fall to 0-5 on the year.  St Mary will travel to Bridgewater on Saturday, January 3rd, for a make-up game with Bridgewater-Emery.  Tip-off is at 2:00 p.m.

Hamlin Surges Past Cardinal Girls in Big 3rd Quarter

DRSMvsHamlin_GBB_12-20-14The Hamlin Chargers outscored the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal girls basketball team 29-2 en route to a 64-35 win on Saturday, December 20th, at the Entringer Classic in Colman.

Hamlin led 16-9 after the first quarter, but the Cardinals were able to pull within three points at 25-22 at halftime.  The halftime break woke up the Charger offense as they scored more points in the third quarter than they did the entire first half.  The intense defense caused problems for the Cardinal offense, and Hamlin finished the quarter ahead 54-24.  St Mary did outscore the Chargers 11-10 in the final quarter.

St Mary finished the game shooting 25% (10-40) as a team from the field, 43% (3-7) from three-point area, and 75% (12-16) from the free-throw line.  The Cardinals pulled down 38 rebounds compared to 43 by Hamlin.  St Mary had six assists, five steals, but turned the ball over 31 times.

Lindsey Wolles led the Cardinals with 11 points and three rebounds.  Jackie Wolles added six points, and Kaitlyn Vortherms finished with five points and six rebounds.

The Cardinals fall to 0-5 on the year.  St Mary will host the Deubrook Area Dolphins on Monday, December 22nd.  The game will be webcast on Big Sioux Media.

Quarrier Girls Basketball Comes from Behind in Colman

DRHSvsFlandreau_GBB_12-20-14The Dell Rapids Quarrier girls basketball team outscored the Flandreau Flyers 20-10 in the final quarter to earn a 41-40 win at the Entringer Classic in Colman on Saturday, December 20th.  Dell Rapids at a 7-6 lead in the first quarter, but the Flyers ended the quarter on a 4-0 run to take a 10-7 lead after the first quarter.  Flandreau held Dell Rapids to just six second quarter points and extended their lead to 18-13 at halftime.  The Quarriers pulled within four points with 4:30 remaining in the third quarter at 23-19, but the Flyers closed out the quarter on a 7-2 run to push their lead to nine points at 30-21.

Arial Hoffman hit a three-pointer with about 5:30 to go in the game as Dell Rapids scored the first seven points of the fourth quarter to pull within two points at 30-28.  Flandreau scored the next four in :40 to lead 34-28 with 4:50 to go in the game.  The Flyers also led by six points at 38-32 with 1:45 remaining.  Averi Pankonen hit a three-point shot to make the score 38-35.  After a made free-throw by Flandreau, Mikaela Stofferahn made a put-back basket and was fouled with just over a minute to play.  Stofferahn missed the free-throw, but Emma Paul pulled down the offensive rebound.  Dell Rapids was able to work the ball to Hoffman who hit a three-point basket to give Dell Rapids a 40-39 lead with just under a minute to play.  Dell Rapids was able to secure possession again, and Paul was fouled on an inbound pass.  Paul made one of two free throws with under :30 left to give the Quarriers a 41-39 lead.  With :19 to play, Brooklyn Behrens of Flandreau was fouled on a shot.  Behrens made one of two and pulled Flandreau within one at 41-40.  Flandreau stole an inbound pass with :06 left, but Brooke Iott was called for an offensive foul with :01 left, allowing Dell Rapids to run out the clock and win the game.

The Quarriers shot 27% (12-45) from the field, 33% (5-15) from three-point area, and 63% (12-19) from the free-throw line in the game.  Dell Rapids had 34 team rebounds and turned the ball over 21 times.  Hoffman finished with 10 points and three steals.  Stofferahn had nine points and eight rebounds.  Brittney Siemonsma ended with four points, but had seven rebounds.

Stofferahn was also named the game MVP.

Dell Rapids improves to 3-0 on the year.  The Quarriers will play Wagner in the Parkston Classic at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 27th.

Quarrier Boys Basketball Rides Big 2nd Quarter to Win

DRHSvsTea_BBB_12-19-14A 20-4 run in the second quarter propelled the Dell Rapids Quarriers boys basketball team to a win over the Tea Area Titans on Friday, December 19th, in Tea 57-45.

The first quarter was back and forth as the teams were tied 3-3, 8-8, and 10-10.  Tea was able to take a 14-12 lead at the end of the first quarter.  Dell Rapids scored the first seven points in the second quarter to take a 19-14 lead with 6:40 to go in the half.  Tea pulled within two points at 20-18 with 5:00 left to go in the quarter.  That was the time Tea would score in the quarter as the Quarriers finished the quarter on a 12-0 run to take a 32-18 lead into halftime.

Neither team was able to find a strong offensive rhythm in the third quarter.  Tea was able to cut the lead to 34-26 with 3:23 left in the third quarter.  The Quarriers pushed that lead back to 12 at 40-28 at the end of the third quarter.  Dell Rapids was able to take a 49-31 lead with 5:45 left in the game, their largest lead of the night.  Tea finished the game on a 14-8 run, however it was not enough to overtake the Quarriers.

Dell Rapids shot 34% (22-64) from the field, 29% (6-21) from three-point range, and 47% (5-14) from the free-throw line.  The Quarriers also had 36 total rebounds, 12 assists as a team, nine steals, and 13 turnovers.

Zane Schumaker led the team with 13 points in the game.  Ben Hammer finished with 11 points, three rebounds, and three blocks.  Ty Hoglund added 10 points.  Riley Schmidt tossed in seven points, had four rebounds, and three assists.  Tanner Heim grabbed nine rebounds for Dell Rapids.

The Quarriers improve to 2-0 on the year.  Dell Rapids will play Sioux Valley in the Entringer Classic in Brookings on Saturday, December 27th.  The game will be webcast on Big Sioux Media.

Quarrier Girls Basketball Wins at Tea

DRHSvsTea12-19-14The Dell Rapids Quarrier girls basketball team picked up a win in Tea on Friday, December 19th, over the Titans 53-38.

The Titans jumped out to a quick 5-1 early in the first quarter, but Dell Rapids went on a 14-4 run to take a 15-9 lead at the end of the first quarter.  Tea scored the first five points of the second quarter to pull within a point at 15-14.  However Dell Rapids answered with a 5-0 run of their own to extend the lead back to six at 20-14 and pushed the lead to 28-18 at halftime.

Tea again scored the first points of the third quarter.  The Titans scored the first six points and pulled within four at 28-24.  The Quarriers again had an answer and was able to push the lead back to nine at 37-29 with 3:17 left in the third quarter.  Each team traded points late in the quarter, and Dell Rapids led 41-33 at the end of the third quarter.  The Titans scored the first basket of the quarter to pull within six at 41-35.  Dell Rapids closed out the game on a 12-3 run to pull away for the win.

The Quarriers shot 56% (20-36) from the field, 38% (5-14) from three-point area, and only 36% (8-22) from the free throw line.  Dell Rapids also had 32 team rebounds and turned the ball over 20 times.  Averi Pankonen led the team with 14 points.  Brittney Siemonsma added 12 points, five rebounds, and four assists.  Arial Hoffman finished with 10 points, three steals, and three assists.

Dell Rapids improves to 2-0 on the year.

Third Quarter Rally Lifts Centerville to Win

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal boys basketball team lost to the Centerville Tornadoes on Tuesday, December 16th, in Centerville 74-53.  The Cardinals lead after the first quarter by a score of 23-16.  The Tornadoes outscored St Mary 24-11 in the second quarter to take a 40-34 halftime lead.  However, it was the third quarter that rallied the Tornadoes to the win.  Centerville outscores St Mary 24-4 in the third quarter to extend their lead to 64-38.  The Cardinals did outscore the Tornadoes 15-10 in the final quarter.

Mitch Brown led the Cardinals with 17 points in the game.  Ryan Welbig added nine points.  Zach Geraets finished with eight points, and Matt Farmer had five points.

Head coach Pete Schmidt said, “Ryan came off the bench to score nine points and played great defense on their leading scorer.  Mitch shot the ball well connecting on four three’s.”

St Mary falls to 0-2 on the year.  The Cardinals will host DeSmet on Friday, December 19th.  The game will be webcast on Big Sioux Media.

Cardinal Girls Basketball Falls to Centerville

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal girls basketball team lost to the Centerville Tornadoes on Tuesday, December 16th, by a score of 64-43.  The Cardinals led early in the ball game.  St Mary had a five-point lead with 4:51 to go in the first quarter, but the Tornadoes were able to close out the first quarter with the lead 18-17.  Centerville was able to increase their lead in the middle two quarters.  The Tornadoes outscores the Cardinals 15-6 in the second quarter to take a 33-23 lead into halftime.  The Tornadoes outscores the Cardinals 20-9 in the third quarter to push the lead to 53-32 at the end of the third quarter.  Both teams scored 11 points in the final quarter.

St Mary finished the night shooting 30% (19-64) from the field.  The Cardinals were just 1-6 from three-point area and shot 4-13 from the free-throw line.  St Mary finished the game with 33 total rebounds.

Ally Mullaney led St Mary with 19 points and 12 rebounds.  Kennedi Mullaney finished with six points.  Lexi Klein added four points.  Jackie Wolles pulled down five rebounds for the Cardinals.

St Mary falls to 0-3 on the year.  The Cardinals will host DeSmet on Thursday, December 18th, in their first home game of the year.
