Hank Bunkers

Henry “Hank” N. Bunkers, 71, of Dell Rapids passed away on Monday, July 2, 2012 at his home. His Funeral Service will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, July 6, 2012 at Trent Baptist Church, Trent. Interment with military rites will be in the Dell Rapids Cemetery at 12:15 p.m. on Friday. Visitation will begin at noon on Thursday, July 5, 2012 with the family present from 5:00 p.m.- 7:00 p.m. A prayer service will begin at 7:00 p.m. at Kahler Funeral Home.

Henry “Hank” Norbert Bunkers was born on October 27, 1940 to Cleophas and Mary (Moes) Bunkers. He worked for Gil Haugen Construction, Quality Concrete and L. G. Everest Inc. where he was a front-end loader operator for 26 years. He retired in December of 2010.

Hank’s legacy of wood can be found in many area households. He enjoyed woodworking, fishing, riding his four wheeler and telling his many stories.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Cleophas and Mary, his brother, Donald, nephew, Ed and his niece, Janet Bunkers.

Hank is survived by his wife, Donna of Dell Rapids; his sons, Matthew (Ann) of Perry, GA, Michael (Diane) of Dell Rapids and Mark (Tracy) of Dell Rapids; twelve grandchildren and ten great grandchildren; his brother, Lee (Ethel) of Utah and his sister, Betty Kuper of Dell Rapids and many friends.

Shirley Jensen

Shirley Jensen, 83, went to heaven on Saturday, June 30, 2012. Funeral service will begin at 2:30pm on Tuesday, July 3, 2012, at George Boom Funeral Home with burial to follow at Hills of Rest Memorial Park.

Shirley was born February 12, 1929 in Arlington, SD to Harry and Dena (Gibson) Corey. She graduated from Windom High School in Windom, MN. She was united in marriage to John C. Jensen on July 15, 1950 in Worthington, MN. The couple moved to Sioux Falls in 1952 where they started their own trucking business in which Shirley kept the books. In 1980, they moved to their country home in Renner, SD which they both loved. Shirley belonged to the First United Methodist Church in Sioux Falls where she volunteered for many years. She spent her life loving her family.

In her free time, Shirley enjoyed traveling with John to Hawaii and Las Vegas, bowling with friends, taking care of her flowers and cooking for everyone. She especially loved to spend time with her grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband, John C. Jensen, Renner, SD; children, Roxie Blanchar, Dell Rapids, SD, Barry (Carla) Jensen, Sioux Falls, Becky Jensen, Vermillion, SD, and Jodi Loe, Renner, SD; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Lois Peterson and Bernie Hanson both of Minnesota.

Doris (Shefte) Matz

Doris Jean Matz, 83, of Belvidere passed away Wednesday, June 13, 2012, at her home.

Born September 7, 1928, in Dell Rapids, S.D., the daughter of Knute and Clara (Quissell) Shefte. She graduated from Dell Rapids High School. Married Arnold E. Matz on June 2, 1946, in Luverne, Minn.

Doris was a homemaker and a Belvidere resident for 55 years. Member of Zion Lutheran Church, Belvidere, and of the Sons of Norway, Loves Park. She loved to spend time with her grandchildren, enjoyed sewing, being outside and tending to her flower garden and feeding her birds.

Survived by daughters, Carol Ellingson of Rockton and Peggy (Ronald) Karlson of Belvidere; grandchildren, Todd S. Miller, Tracy Miller, Kristin Karlson, T.J. Matz and Toni (John Gillott) Matz; great-grandchildren, Brooke Van Briesen, Austin Miller, Emma Miller, Derek Gillott and Abigail Gillott; brothers, Kenneth (Delores) Shefte of Dell Rapids, S.D., and Howard Shefte of Sioux Falls, S.D.; and sister, Ruth Megard of Lincoln, Neb. Predeceased by her parents; husband; son, Thomas Matz; grandson, Mike Luxton; and sister, Bernice Gubbe. A special thank you to the nurses and staff of Heartland Hospice for their kind and compassionate care. Service at 11 a.m. Monday, June 18, in Zion Lutheran Church, with visitation from 10 a.m. to time of service; the Rev. Karl Otto will officiate. Interment in Belvidere Cemetery. Paul Torgusen

Paul Lawrence Torgusen, the son of Lawrence and Jeannette (Beyer) Torgusen, was born March 28, 1958 in Wells. After completing his high school education, Paul earned two Associate in Arts degrees from South Central Technical College in Mankato. He was united in marriage to Diane Borson May 26, 1984 at Redeemer Lutheran Church in New Ulm. Paul worked for Phoenix Bio-Composite in Mankato. He began working for New Ulm Telecom in 2005, serving with Tech Team II and Internet Support. Paul enjoyed astronomy, photography, gardening, fishing and computers. He enjoyed spending time with his family, especially the little ones in his life, Courtney, Caitlin, Memphis and Mahlia. He was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church in New Ulm.

Survivors include his wife Diane of New Ulm; daughter Alise Torgusen and son Eric Torgusen both of New Ulm; mother Jeannette Torgusen of Mankato; brothers Peter Torgusen and his wife Nancy of Dell Rapids, SD, Mark Torgusen of Jackson Hole, WY; sisters Mary Torgusen of Mankato, Debra Clark and her husband Carl of Sioux Falls, SD; mother-in-law Deloris Borson of New Ulm; brother-in-law Duane Borson of New Ulm; sisters-in-law Deb Langholz and her husband Tom of New Ulm, Denise Borson of New Ulm; nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives.

Dominic “Nick” Salviola

Dominic “Nick” Salviola, 92, of Dell Rapids passed away on Wednesday, June 27, 2012 at the Dells Nursing and Rehab Center. His Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, June 30, 2012 at 10:30 a.m. in St. Mary Catholic Church, Dell Rapids. Nick Salviola was born November 14, 1919 to Joseph and Beatrice (Colangelo) Salviola in North Sioux City, SD. He graduated from Jefferson High School in Jefferson, SD in 1937. While a senior in high school he started working for the Milwaukee RailRoad. He enlisted in the Army during WWII and was a member of the 744th Railroad Operating Battalion from 1944-1946. He operated steam and diesel powered locomotives. The 744th served in the campaigns of Northern France, Ardennes, and Rhineland. After his discharge from the service Nick continued working for the Milwaukee Railroad until his retirement in 1980. He was married to Hilda Cox in Sioux Falls, who preceded him in death in 1976. He married Dolores (Geraets) Kroger on June 7, 1974 in Dell Rapids.

Nick was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Dell Rapids, the Dell Rapids Tree Board, the Dell Rapids American Legion Post, the Senior Citizen Center and the Garden Club.

He will be forever remembered for both his 25 year dedication to planting and maintaining trees in Dell Rapids as well as for inviting and cooking spaghetti for hundreds of friends and family members over the years. Nick was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters.

He is survived by his wife, De of Dell Rapids; his two sons, Joe of McCook Lake, SD and Mike (Connie) of Sioux City, IA; his five step-children, Dale Kroger of Sioux Falls, Sandra (Dean) Helton of Polo, IL, Linda (Glenn) Bryson of Paxson, AZ, Diane Kroger (Ross Goetz) of Dell Rapids and Debra (Mark) Duby of Peoria, AZ; his three granddaughters; his four step-grandchildren; his eight great-grandchildren; and his four step-great-grandchildren.

Al Grovenburg

Al Grovenburg, age 80, of Watertown, SD passed away on Saturday, June 23, 2012 at a care center in Dell Rapids, SD. Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, June 28, 2012 at the First United Methodist Church with Reverend Elmer Brinkman officiating. Don Seim will be the soloist accompanied by Blair Titze. Interment will be in the Thomas Oxford Cemetery, Thomas, SD. Military Honors will be conducted by the South Dakota State Patrol, Codington County Post 17 of the American Legion and Watertown Army National Guard Funeral Honors Team. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. on Wednesday at the Wight, Comes & Sogn Funeral Chapel and on Thursday for one hour prior to the service at the church.

Honorary Pallbearers will be Honorary Law Enforcement. Active Pallbearers will be Dustin, Steven, and Kenny Grovenburg, Bob Shultz, Arlin Schumacher and Lester Urban.

Albert A. Grovenburg was born on February 14, 1932 to Ward and Pansy (Devor) Grovenburg at Seneca, Kansas. At the age of nine he moved with his family to South Dakota. Al graduated from Watertown High School in 1949. Al married Jean Hunter on May 28, 1953 at Thomas, SD. He joined the United States Army and served from 1955-1958. After his discharge from his military service, he became a partner in Wynn’s Potato Chips from 1958-1966. Al then began his law enforcement career serving at Armour, Milbank and Watertown.

Al and Jean owned Loken’s Tax Service from 1967-1995. Al was a charter bus driver for Roy & Wilma Tours of Mitchell, SD and Jackrabbit Lines of Sioux Falls. Al was a member of the First United Methodist Church, South Dakota Highway Patrol Retirees and a Life member of the American Legion. He was a avid bowler and was inducted into the Watertown Bowler’s Hall of Fame, was a Twins Fan, and enjoyed hunting, fishing and golfing.

Al is survived by his wife, Jean; his sons, Doug (Kathy) Grovenburg of Dell Rapids, Jeff (Wendy) Grovenburg and Mike Grovenburg of Sioux Falls; two sisters, Rudie Grovenburg of Watertown, and Ina (Marlin) Muehliason of Clark; four grandchildren, Dustin, Steven, Kenny and Katie; and four great grandchildren. Keith Myren

Keith R. Myren, 55, of Salem passed away on June 22, 2012. Funeral services will begin at 10:30 am on Monday, June 25 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, rural Canova. Visitation will begin at 4 pm on Sunday with family present at 6 pm and a 7 pm prayer service all at Kinzley Funeral Home in Salem.

Keith R. Myren was born on November 27, 1956 to Leonard and Elizabeth (Bauerle) Myren in Mitchell, SD. He was raised in the Salem/Canova area and graduated from Canova High School. He lived his whole life in the Salem area where he worked for Feterl Manufacturing and later Buehler.

Keith was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church where he was baptized and confirmed. His passion was riding his Honda Gold Wing and he loved spending time with friends, family, and especially his dogs, Snowball, Sammie, and Angel.

Shirley Osterday

Shirley Jorgenson Osterday, 90, of Rapid City, died on Sat., June 23, 2012 at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Shirley Irene Jorgenson was born on her family farm ten miles outside of Dell Rapids, SD on March 25, 1922 to Conrad and Nellie Marie (Norgaard) Jorgenson; she was the youngest of four children – Viola, Raymond, Norman and Shirley; she traveled back to the farm every August for a family reunion.

Shirley married Herbert “Herb” Osterday on January 3, 1945 at Dell Rapids after his service in World War II and they celebrated 59 glorious years of marriage; the couple moved to Rapid City in 1960 and opened Herb’s Bike Shop on the corner of 5th and St. Patrick Streets.

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two brothers and her sister. She was the wonderful and dedicated mother to three daughters: Shirleen (Mike) Fugitt of Pierre, SD, Jane (Bryan) Schulte of Burlington, Iowa and Pat (Mike Roberts) Peterson of Fort Collins, Colo.; the doting grandmother to Scott (Dawn) Kennedy, Ryan Kennedy, and Brooke (Kasey) VandeBerg and the great grandmother to Alison Kennedy and Thomas VandeBerg; she was anticipating the arrival of her third great grandchild soon. Her children and grandchildren knew her best for her infamous banana bread, which she dutifully baked for every family occasion.

Shirley was a dedicated employee of the Rapid City School District and worked as a matron at Central High School until her retirement. In retirement, Shirley enjoyed traveling with her husband to nearly all 50 states including Alaska and Hawaii, many by motor home; the couple also visited Germany, Holland, Austria and Switzerland.

Shirley was known to strike up a conversation with anyone and always enjoyed meeting new people; in her free time during retirement, she devoted nearly twenty years working at the Tilford Rest Area and Welcome Center along with Herb where they both loved greeting travelers and visitors to the state.

Shirley was an avid collector and looked all over the country for new additions to her shoe collection; after her husband, Herb passed away in 2004, she moved to Echo Ridge where she enjoyed playing cards every night and meeting many new friends.

Sam Kooiker, Mayor of Rapid City proclaimed Sunday, March 25, 2012 to be Shirley Osterday Day throughout the City of Rapid City in honor of her 90th birthday.

Visitation will be on Mon., June 25 from 5pm to 7pm at Kirk Funeral Home in Rapid City.

Private interment will be held at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, SD.

Memorial services are set for 11:00am Tues., June 26 at Parkview Ev. Free Church in Rapid City with the Rev. Mark Crossman officiating. A reception and luncheon will follow at the church.

Dennis Hegg

Dennis Hegg, 66, of Lake Madison died on Saturday, June 23, 2012 at Dougherty Hospice in Sioux Falls. His funeral service will be held on Wednesday, June 27, 2012 at 1:00 p.m. in the St. John Lutheran Church in Madison. Interment will precede the service at 10:00 a.m. in the Dell Rapids Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 26, 2012 at Kahler Funeral Home in Dell Rapids. The family will be present from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. and there will be a prayer service at 7:00 p.m.

Dennis James Hegg was born on January 12, 1946 in Dell Rapids, the son of Agnes and Leonard Hegg. He graduated from Dell Rapids High School in 1964, received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Augustana College in 1968, and his Master of Music Degree from the University of South Dakota in 1976.

Dennis married Barbara Johnson on August 19, 1967 at Waverly Lutheran Church of rural Trimont, MN. He was the director of bands at Dakota State University from 2001 until his retirement in 2009. Prior to that, he taught for 33 years in public schools at Baltic, Beresford, Dell Rapids, and Madison. His bands won numerous awards and his direction helped many students win awards and recognition. He instilled the love of music in thousands of high school students throughout his career.

Dennis was a former president and secretary-treasurer of the South Dakota Band Masters Association. In 2003, he was awarded the National Citation for Music by the National Federation of High Schools. In March of this year, he was inducted into the South Dakota Band Masters Hall of Fame.

Dennis was very active in the community, serving on the Madison School Board and president of the St. John Lutheran Church congregation in Madison. In 1995, he served as Master of Ceremonies for the Sioux Falls Municipal Band and became the director in 1996 and 1997. He directed church choirs, dozens of plays and musicals, and organized a gospel group in Beresford for which he sang, wrote songs, and played guitar. He was a charter member of the Optimist Club in Dell Rapids and held the office of District Lieutenant Gevernor.

Dennis is survived by his wife, Barbara of Lake Madison; his three sons, Jeremy, Jason (Shanna Apland), and Jonathon (Katie Ellwein), all of Sioux Falls; and one granddaughter, Allison of Sioux Falls. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Rhoda Peterson

Rhoda K. Peterson, 66, of Sioux Falls, passed away on Friday, June 22, 2012 at her residence. Her funeral service will begin at 2:00 p.m. at the Trent Baptist Church in Trent, SD. Visitation will be held two hours prior to the start of the funeral service in the church. Interment will be in the Dell Rapids Cemetery.

Rhoda Kay Peterson was born on November 25, 1945, the daughter of Lloyd and Virginia Peterson at the Chester Clinic, Chester, SD. She grew up and lived with her family in the Trent area until she was 17. She moved to Redfield, SD and enrolled in the Development Center. In September of 1982 Rhoda moved to Sioux Falls, SD and became a resident of Sioux Vocational (Achieve). She was a resident at Churchill for the past 18 years. She enjoyed her many friends both resident and staff while she lived there.

She will be remembered for her good sense of humor and quick wit. She was a member of Trent Baptist Church. Rhoda enjoyed embroidering, baton twirling and music. She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Andrea Cressman.

She is survived by her sisters, Ramona (Jim) Huppert of Amery, WI, Gwen Amen of Sioux Falls and Virginia “Ginger” Hill of Baltic; her many nieces and nephews and friends at Achieve.
