Dominic “Nick” Salviola, 92, of Dell Rapids passed away on Wednesday, June 27, 2012 at the Dells Nursing and Rehab Center. His Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, June 30, 2012 at 10:30 a.m. in St. Mary Catholic Church, Dell Rapids. Nick Salviola was born November 14, 1919 to Joseph and Beatrice (Colangelo) Salviola in North Sioux City, SD. He graduated from Jefferson High School in Jefferson, SD in 1937. While a senior in high school he started working for the Milwaukee RailRoad. He enlisted in the Army during WWII and was a member of the 744th Railroad Operating Battalion from 1944-1946. He operated steam and diesel powered locomotives. The 744th served in the campaigns of Northern France, Ardennes, and Rhineland. After his discharge from the service Nick continued working for the Milwaukee Railroad until his retirement in 1980. He was married to Hilda Cox in Sioux Falls, who preceded him in death in 1976. He married Dolores (Geraets) Kroger on June 7, 1974 in Dell Rapids.
Nick was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Dell Rapids, the Dell Rapids Tree Board, the Dell Rapids American Legion Post, the Senior Citizen Center and the Garden Club.
He will be forever remembered for both his 25 year dedication to planting and maintaining trees in Dell Rapids as well as for inviting and cooking spaghetti for hundreds of friends and family members over the years. Nick was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters.
He is survived by his wife, De of Dell Rapids; his two sons, Joe of McCook Lake, SD and Mike (Connie) of Sioux City, IA; his five step-children, Dale Kroger of Sioux Falls, Sandra (Dean) Helton of Polo, IL, Linda (Glenn) Bryson of Paxson, AZ, Diane Kroger (Ross Goetz) of Dell Rapids and Debra (Mark) Duby of Peoria, AZ; his three granddaughters; his four step-grandchildren; his eight great-grandchildren; and his four step-great-grandchildren.
