Dell Rapids Chamber Holds Easter Egg Hunt

Despite having to postpone the event once and chilly temperatures during the hunt, the Dell Rapids Chamber of Commerce was able to held their annual Easter Egg hunt on Saturday, April 7th, at the Dell Rapids City Park. The event was originally scheduled for Saturday, March 31st, but a snow storm forced the event to be rescheduled a week later. The temperatures were chilly, but the sun was out and children of all ages were able to search for eggs before another snow storm hit the area the next day.

The event had three different age groups: three-years-old and under, ages four to six, and seven-years-old and older. The chamber filled nearly 6,500 eggs and placed them in three different areas of the park for the kids to find. This year the Chamber of Commerce had two “Golden Egg” winners per age group. The “Golden Eggs” were exchanged for prize packages including several prizes from local businesses throughout Dell Rapids.

The Easter Egg hunt started at 10:30 a.m., but the Easter Bunny made a visit to the park at 10:00 to take pictures with all of the kids.

Dell Rapids Native Jon Hansen to Run for State House

Dell Rapids, SD – Former State Representative Jon Hansen announced that he will run for a seat in the South Dakota House of Representatives for District 25. District 25 includes the towns and rural areas surrounding Baltic, Colton, Dell Rapids, Garretson, Rowena, Sherman, Valley Springs, and eastern Sioux Falls.

Hansen lives in Dell Rapids with his wife Sheila and their three children. “We’re so blessed to call this community our home, and if elected, I look forward to once again standing up for the people of our district so they know that someone out in Pierre has their back,” Hansen said.

Hansen previously served in the State House from 2010 to 2013. During that time Hansen served in leadership as a majority whip and as vice chairman of the House Judiciary Committee. Hansen holds a law degree from USD.

While in Pierre Hansen, a fiscal conservative, advocated for low taxes and fees, open and efficient government, protection of life, preservation of family farms, and quality education for South Dakota children.

Hansen will face a primary election on June 5th, 2018.

Highway 115 Project Set to Start in Dell Rapids

The South Dakota Department of Transportation says the Highway 115 project is set to continue in Dell Rapids as soon as the weather cooperates. That message came from Travis Dressen, Sioux Falls Area Engineer for the SDDOT, during a community forum meeting held at River Community Church on Monday, March 26th. T&R Contracting will be the company that will be doing the work on the project.

“I think that interstate route will be one of the better routes to take from a convenience standpoint,” said Dressen. This comment was made as Dressen was explaining that the SDDOT has plans of doing shoulder work from the Colton road into Sioux Falls on Highway 115 southward. That work cannot start until mid June in hopes that the concrete overlay of the Highway 115 project is complete or nearly complete.

The concrete overlay portion of the project will run from 472nd Ave, which is where the interchange project stopped, eastward to about 473rd Ave. Once T&R Contracting starts the overlay portion of the project, they have 21 calendar days to finish the work. During that time there will be 24/7 operation with a flaggers and a pilot car. The contractor is hoping to begin the overlay portion towards the beginning of May, or sooner, if the weather cooperates.

The next section of construction will be the grading section which will start at 473rd Ave eastward towards the four-way stop. The section of roadway will be completely removed. There will be storm sewers installed in some spots as well as roadway lighting and new concrete pavement. As the road gets closer to the city, it will be a three-lane road with two driving lanes and a center turning lane.

The project will also include replacing the current structure over Rocky Run Creek. While replacing this structure, there will be a traffic-diversion road placed to the north of Highway 115 that will cause a new temporary intersection to be placed just north of the four-way stop. As of now that intersection will be a one-way stop, but Dressen said that if during the construction they feel a three-way stop is needed, the SDDOT would consider doing that. The diversion road construction can begin on April 30th.

The City of Dell Rapids will also be doing some coordinating with T&R Contracting during this project. The city will be doing water main work which will result in a temporary closure of Third Street at Highway 115. During that time the truck route will be temporarily moved to Fourth Street. The SDDOT will communicate the timing of this closure through press releases when the time comes to shut down the intersection.

The city also secured a grant to have a shared-use path installed with this project. The path will be installed on the west side of the road of Highway 115 that runs south of Dell Rapids and will tie into the existing path that was installed in 2016. As the highway turns west at the four-way stop, the path will be on the north side of the road.

Dressen also commented on the state of the bridge work that is currently being done on Highway 115 over the Big Sioux River at the meeting. He said the footings of the bridge is complete as well as the pier walls. He said that most of the work in the water has been completed. The contractors expect to be setting bridge girders sometime around mid April with a deck pour anticipated around the June time frame.

The substantial completion date for this project is November of 2018.

The Highway 115 project is a continuation of the of the project from the 2017 I-29 interchange project. In 2016 Highway 115 was completed along with the south bridge from the Colton road to River Road. The Garfield Ave bridge reconstruction project was completed in 2015 in Dell Rapids.

St Mary Student Council Recognized as “Outstanding” by SDHSAA

The South Dakota High School Activities Association (SDHSAA) announced today that 38 South Dakota high school student councils have been recognized as being “Outstanding Student Councils” for the 2017-18 school year. This is the 28th year this statewide program has been sponsored by the SDHSAA to recognize those South Dakota high school student councils that meet or exceed the rigorous standards of excellence that are necessary to achieve the “Outstanding Student Council” designation. Student councils that achieve this recognition can best be described as being very active within their school and community throughout the school year. Outstanding Councils excel in having a well-rounded program of activities and projects which benefit both their school and their community throughout the school year.

The “SDHSAA Outstanding Student Council” program requires each participating student council to complete a self-evaluation of their organizational structure and their successful completion of projects in a variety of areas. The evaluation also considers the involvement of the student council in their school and community. The High School Activities Association recognizes the student councils that have met the stringent standards and criteria demanded by this program. The 38 student councils that have been recognized this year are well organized, highly motivated and have met the rigorous standards necessary to be declared outstanding. The self-evaluation focuses on the structure of the student council as well as the positive involvement of the student council in the activities of their school and community.

To be recognized as an “Outstanding Student Council”, each council was involved in projects in the areas such as “Community and School Service”, “Health, Safety or Chemical Awareness”, “Education”, and “Leadership”. Completion of projects in a wide range of areas was necessary to fulfill a variety of goals for the student council. Each school receiving the “SDHSAA Outstanding Student Council” award has demonstrated a desire for self-improvement and individual growth by participating in leadership workshops and conventions, as well as other educational programs.

Annual 5th Grade Living History Fair Held

The Dell Rapids fifth graders held their annual Living History Fair on Friday, March 23rd, in the Dell Rapids Middle School commons area. This was the seventh year the fifth grade classes at Dell Rapids have held this event.

Students were given an historical figure to portray during the event. They spent the last few weeks researching their person, putting together a report, creating a costume, and putting together a visual board about their person. The students then held “performances” two different times during the day of their event. The first session was held from 9:00 – 10:00 a.m., and the second session was held from 3:30 – 4:30 p.m.

Students had coin cans at their station. When visitors put coins in the jar, the students “came to life” and acted out their report about the life of the person they were portraying. The students will be donating all the money raised during the event to a charity of their choosing.

Pinewood Derby Time Again in Dell Rapids

The Dell Rapids Boy Scouts Pack 53 held their annual Pinewood Derby race on Saturday, March 24th, at the Dell Rapids Elementary School. Den members from the Lions, Tigers, Wolves, Bears, and Webelos once again spent time creating their Pinewood Derby cards for the big race. Family members were also once again able to enter a race with the specially created cars in the open class division. The Boy Scouts again invited the Girl Scouts to build cars and race as part of the event on Saturday.

Four places were given to the Boy Scout division and three places were given to the Girl Scouts. Best of show awards were also given to a car from each den and the Girl Scout division. There was also an overall best of show winner.

The top three Boy Scout place winners advanced to race their cars at the Scout-O-Rama in Sioux Falls.

Behr Peckenpaugh placed first, Dylan Aker was second, Orran O’Meara placed third, and Liam Zellmer was fourth in the Boy Scout division.

Best of Show winners were Blake Lebahn for the Tigers, Dylan Berg for the Bears, Noah Hubers for the Wolves, Gavin Jones for the Lions, Zander Lacey for Weblos 1, and Noah Larson for Weblos 2. The overall Best of Show winner was Henry Anderson.

The Dell Rapids Lions Club officiated the event as well as voted for the Best of Show winners.

Help Improve the Lives of Patients, Give Blood

Dell Rapids, SD- Avera Dells Area Health Center and Community Blood Bank will join forces to host a community blood drive on Thursday, April 5 from 7:00 am to 11:00 am and 12:30 pm to 2:30 pm. All blood donations will directly benefit the local blood supply and patients in need at Avera Dells Area Health Center.

“Spring is the perfect time to provide a lifesaving gift and impact the community’s blood supply,” states Ken Versteeg, Executive Director, Community Blood Bank. “Your donation of blood with Community Blood Bank will save up to three patients, impacting a trauma, burn, surgery or cancer patient. School Board Finalizes Calendar and Sets Election Date

The Dell Rapids School Board held their latest regular meeting on Monday, March 12th. Among other items discussed, the board finalized the school calendar for the remainder of this year as well as set the date for the school board election.

The Dell Rapids school district has had only one full day of school missed due to the weather this year.

Superintendent Dr. Summer Schultz said, “You have two choices really…make up the day with staff and students, or make up the day with just staff.”

After discussion the board voted to leave the last day of school for students as Wednesday, May 23rd. The missed day will be made up by the staff on Friday, May 25th as an in-service day. This was also the recommendation from Dr. Schultz.

The school board also set the school board election for Tuesday, April 10th. All precincts will be voting at the Dell Rapids Lutheran Church. The public will be voting on two school board openings. The City of Dell Rapids did not have to hold an election this year as all open city council ward spots only had one candidate petition filed per ward.

Schumaker, Dells Grad, Only SD Student to Make List

Zane Schumaker, a Dell Rapids graduate and junior at Mount Marty, was one of 177 National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Division II men’s basketball student-athletes named to the 2018 Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athletes list for the 2017-2018 season.

Schumaker was one of two students from Mount Marty named to the list and the only student from South Dakota to make the list.

In order to be nominated by an institution’s head coach or sports information director, a student-athlete must maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale and must have achieved a junior academic status to qualify for this honor.

Schumaker led the Lancers in assists and steals during this past season.
