Cardinal Volleyball Opens 2020 Season with Win

August 29, 2020 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal volleyball team opened the 2020 season with a road victory on Thursday, August 27th.  The Cardinals defeated the Alcester-Hudson Cubs in four sets by scores of 25-22, 25-17, 24-26, 25-21.

The entire match was very close in all four sets.  The first set was back and forth all set long.  The Cubs led 20-18, but the Cardinals were able to tie the set at 22-22 and then get the next three points for the 25-22 win.  St Mary was able to keep that momentum going in the second set as they led most of the way.  They took the second set 25-17.  In another close battle in the third set, the Cubs were able to extend the match with an extra-point victory of 26-24.  The Cardinals were able to bounce back in the fourth set and win yet another close battle.  St Mary took the set 25-21 to win the match.

St Mary (1-0) will have six straight matches at home starting on Saturday, August 29th against Great Plains Lutheran.

Cardinals Fall in 2020 Football Season Opener

August 23, 2020 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals kicked off their 2020 season on the road at Henry against the Florence/Henry Falcons on Friday, August 21st.  This was not the original opponent for the Cardinals.  St Mary was originally scheduled to play the Estelline/Hendricks Redhawks, but that game was cancelled due to Covid earlier in the week.  The Cardinals were able to find a replacement game with Florence/Henry less than 24 hours later.

With all the details finalized, St Mary made the trip to Henry on Friday afternoon.  Unfortunately, the Falcons were victorious by a score of a 18-6.

The Cardinals controlled the pace of the game in the first quarter.  Even though their opening drive didn’t result in a score, St Mary held the ball for over six minutes.  After holding the Falcons to just three plays on their first offensive possession, St Mary got the first score of the game on a 10-yard touchdown run by Connor Libis with 0:48 to play in the first quarter.  The two-point conversion was no good, and St Mary led 6-0.

Florence/Henry was able to get the offense going late in the second quarter and in the third quarter.  After a turnover by the Cardinals, the Falcons tied the game with 4:56 to play in the second quarter on a 10-yard run by Ashton Hanson.  Their two-point conversion failed, and the game was tied 6-6 at halftime.

The Falcons then used two big plays in the third quarter to take the victory from St Mary.  In the first possession of the second half, Mehki Keller scored on a 59-yard run with 10:15 to play to give Florence/Henry a 12-6 lead.  The Falcons struck again with 3:18 to go in the third quarter when Hanson scored on a 55-yard run to push the lead to 18-6.  That score was enough to give the Falcons the win.

St Mary finished the game with a total of 10 first downs compared to just four for the Falcons.  The Cardinals had 158 rushing yards and 37 passing yards.  Libis was 4-12 passing for 37 yards.  Ashaun Roach-Valandra had two catches for 28 yards.  Gabriel Lindeman led the team in rushing with 20 carries for 94 yards.  Libis had 21 carries for 60 yards.

The Cardinals (0-1) will travel to Castlewood on Friday, August 28th.  The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Cardinal Boys Lose Tough Battle to Howard

February 21, 2020 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

On Thursday, February 20th the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal and Howard Tigers found themselves locked in a close Region 4B game at Howard High School.

With the two teams evenly matched, the first quarter went just as expected.  The two teams traded baskets in a high-scoring, high-paced fashion as the two teams combined for 44 points.  Howard held a slim 23-21 lead after the first quarter.  The Tigers were able to push their lead to 33-27 in the second quarter only to see the Cardinals cut it back down to two points at 35-33.  Howard, however, ended the second quarter on a 6-3 run to push the lead back to five points by halftime at 41-36.

The third quarter saw each team go on spurts.  Howard struck first to go on an 8-4 run to push the lead to nine points at 49-40.  St Mary responded with the next five points to cut the lead down to four at 49-45.  The Tigers then scored seven in a row for the largest lead of the night at 56-45.  St Mary would get the lead down to seven by the end of the quarter at 58-51.  The Cardinals then went on an extended run in the fourth quarter.  They were able to get the game tied at 60-60, and then take their first lead at 62-60 at about the midway mark of the fourth quarter.  The lead for the Cardinals remained at two points at 64-62 with 3:00 to play.  Howard scored the next four points to regain the lead at 66-64 with just under 2:00 to go.  With the scored 66-65 in favor of Howard, the Cardinals got the ball and had a chance to take the lead with just seconds remaining, but were called for an offensive foul with :04.8 on the clock.  The Cardinals had to foul on the inbound.  Howard made one of two free throws, and St Mary was able to grab the rebound and call a timeout with :02.9 to go.  A last second three-point shot from half court for St Mary hit off the backboard and back of the rim before falling away no good as Howard hung on for the victory.

The Cardinals were 43% (26-61) from the field, 33% (6-18) from three-point area, and 58% (7-12) from the free-throw line.  Weston Geraets finished with 17 points, nine rebounds, three steals, and two assists.  Connor Libis had a team-high 21 points and five steals.  Max Herber added 10 points, three rebounds, and two assists.  Sam Palmer had six points and four rebounds, and Cole Welbig had five rebounds and four assists.

Senior Night Full of Excitement for Cardinal Girls

February 19, 2020 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

Photo taken and used with permission by Tammy Chamley, Dells City Journal

On a night for celebration, the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals got to celebrate twice when they hosted the Elkton-Lake Benton Elks on Tuesday, February 18th.

This was the final regular season home game for the Cardinals, which meant St Mary would celebrate their lone senior on the team, Tana Harrington.  Harrington was able to dress for the game and scored the game’s first two points in the opening seconds on an uncontested layup as a celebration for her career at Dell Rapids St Mary High School.  St Mary would also celebrate in the final seconds of the game.

After the Harrington scored her layup, St Mary allowed Elkton-Lake Benton to tie the game at 2-2 with an uncontested layup of their own.  The rest of the quarter remained close with the Elks having a slight 14-12 advantage.  St Mary opened the second quarter on a 7-0 run to lead 19-14, but Elkton-Lake Benton finished the quarter on a 7-2 run to tie the game at 21-21 entering halftime.

The Elks looked to take control of the game late in the third quarter.  They were able to pull away from St Mary just a bit as they lead 31-26 heading into the fourth quarter.  The lead extended to 33-26 early in the fourth quarter, but the Cardinals would not surrender.  They slowly chipped away at the lead and tied the game at 35-35 with 2:00 to go.  The Elks took a one point lead after a made free throw at 36-35.  Ella Heinitz was fouled on a three-point attempt and made all three free throws to give the Cardinals a 38-36 lead with about a minute to play.  The Elks pulled within a point after a one-for-two trip to the free-throw line.  They made a defensive stop and then earned another trip to the free-throw line with just seconds remaining.  The first free throw was made to tie the game at 38-38.  The second one was missed, and the Cardinals grabbed the rebound, got the ball to mid-court, and then called a timeout with just three seconds left.

After the timeout, St Mary was able to get the ball in-bounded to Brianna Griffin.  She spun at the top of the key and launched a three point shot at the buzzer that was no good.  However, officials called the Elks for a foul on Griffin as time expired, giving her three chances to win the game from the free-throw line with no time left on the clock and no around her.  The first free throw popped out of the rim, went off the backboard, and fell to the ground no good.  The second free throw went through the hoop with nothing but net, and Griffin gave the St Mary Cardinals a 39-38 win in dramatic fashion.

St Mary finished the night shooting 34% (14-41) from the field, 20% (3-15) from the free-throw line, and 57% (8-14) from the free-throw line.  Heinitz had a team-high 16 points along with five rebounds.  Courtney Brown had five points, three rebounds, and three steals.  Ella Griffin had four points, four assists, and three rebounds.  Sydney Klein had three points, eight rebounds, and four assists.  B. Griffin finished with three points.

The Cardinals (10-9) finish the regular season on Thursday, February 20th when they travel to Howard in a boys and girls double header.  The games can be seen on Big Sioux Media.
